"A cock-and-bull story" nghĩa là gì?

"A cock-and-bull story" = chuyện gà bò -> câu chuyện hoặc lời giải thích rõ ràng là không thật, quá cường điệu, nhất là khi ai đó dùng làm cái cớ.
Ví dụ
Cops said he had tried his best to feed a cock-and-bull story to the cops to explain his missing slipper (cái dép), but soon gave in to their interrogation (cuộc thẩm vấn).
She said, however, that in terms of remorse he had not immediately acknowledged (thừa nhận) his guilt, and had concocted (bịa ra) a “cock and bull story” for gardaí, indicating that he was more concerned regarding the consequences (hậu quả) for himself of his actions than those of his victim (nạn nhân).
He'd always come in and share a bit of a cock-and- bull story, sometimes it would be the same story, but ever so slightly adapted, depending on (phụ thuộc vào) who he was telling it to!
