"A force to reckon with" nghĩa là gì?

'A force to reckon with' nghĩa là người/vật/điều gì được coi là mạnh mẽ, quyền lực, khó bị đánh bại.

Ví dụ
I'm very happy there are no injury concerns and the blend of potential on the part of the young lads with experience on the part of the seniors – it will make us a force to reckon with in this tournament.

Tagged, ‘Projecting the Nigerian Narrative: The role of the media, PR & Politicians,’ the event scheduled to hold at Sheraton Hotels, is expected to feature seasoned (nhiều kinh nghiệm, kỳ cựu, 'dạn dày sương gió') achievers (người thành đạt) and influential figures (nhân vật có ảnh hưởng) who are a force to reckon with in their respective fields.

A call has been made to the newly constituted Board and Management of the Ghana National Procurement Company Limited (GNPCL) to revamp the activities of the company and properly position it as a force to reckon with within the framework of the Government’s Industrial transformation agenda.

Microsoft are leaders in the designing of software for home computers, with its most prominent products being Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office. It is also a force to reckon with in the cloud storage business (mảng kinh doanh lưu trữ đám mây). Its cloud storage platform (nền tảng), Azure, lets developers connect and integrate a wide range of tools and services at one place.

"The only game in town" nghĩa là gì?

riêng mình em thôi. Photo courtesy spoilt.exile.

'The only game in town' nghĩa là điều, sự việc, doanh nghiệp duy nhất tại một nơi, hoặc trong một ngành.

Ví dụ
The only game in town if you oppose Brexit is to support a Remain party that stands a fair chance of getting an MEP elected (eg supporting Change UK in Scotland is a wasted vote).

The main event for the dollar this week will be the US retail sales for April, due on Wednesday at 12:30 GMT. Amidst an escalating trade conflict, markets have fully priced in a Fed rate cut by December, yet the dollar has barely retreated. This highlights that the greenback is still the ‘only game in town’, with a rebound in European growth needed to change that.

While Amazon came in at number one, a release from WPP and Kantar emphasized that “Amazon is not the only game in town.” “Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, the world’s largest online and mobile commerce business, arguably has more innovations than Amazon such as partnering with Starbucks (no.7) to have Starbucks in all Alibaba properties, and disrupting its logistics model to better facilitate super-fast delivery,”

the case for fluoridation is also weak by modern standards–questioning fluoridation has been a taboo (điều cấm kỵ) in American society since anti-fluoridation activists were branded as far-right conspiracy theorists (người tin vào thuyết âm mưu) in the 1950s.

The Cochrane organization, a highly respected arbiter of evidence-based medicine, has conducted systematic reviews of oral-health studies since 1999….most of the Cochrane reviews reach one of two disheartening conclusions: Either the available evidence fails to confirm the purported benefits of a given dental intervention, or there is simply not enough research to say anything substantive one way or another.

Fluoridation of drinking water seems to help reduce tooth decay (sâu răng) in children, but there is insufficient evidence that it does the same for adults. Some data suggest that regular flossing, in addition to brushing, mitigates (giảm thiểu) gum disease, but there is only “weak, very unreliable” evidence that it combats plaque. As for common but invasive dental procedures, an increasing number of dentists question the tradition of prophylactic wisdom-teeth (răng khôn) removal; often, the safer choice is to monitor unproblematic teeth for any worrying developments. Little medical evidence justifies the substitution of tooth-colored resins for typical metal amalgams to fill cavities. And what limited data we have don’t clearly indicate whether it’s better to repair a root-canaled tooth with a crown or a filling. When Cochrane researchers tried to determine whether faulty metal fillings should be repaired or replaced, they could not find a single study that met their standards.

Common dental procedures are not always as safe, effective, or durable as we are meant to believe. As a profession, dentistry has not yet applied the same level of self-scrutiny as medicine, or embraced as sweeping an emphasis on scientific evidence.

…Consider the maxim that everyone should visit the dentist twice a year for cleanings. We hear it so often, and from such a young age, that we’ve internalized it as truth. But this supposed commandment of oral health has no scientific grounding. Scholars have traced its origins to a few potential sources, including a toothpaste advertisement from the 1930s and an illustrated pamphlet (cuốn sách nhỏ) from 1849 that follows the travails (công việc cực khổ, khó nhọc) of a man with a severe (nghiêm trọng, trầm trọng, khắc nghiệt) toothache (đau răng). Today, an increasing number of dentists acknowledge that adults with good oral hygiene need to see a dentist only once every 12 to 16 months.

The joke, of course, is that there’s no evidence for the 12 to 16 month rule either.

The full horror of the Aztec 'skull tower' revealed: Archaeologists (nhà khảo cổ) say THOUSANDS of human sacrifices had their still-beating hearts (tim vẫn đập) cut out before their heads were severed (chặt đứt) and added to a monument the size of a basketball court

...The new research is slowly uncovering the vast scale of the human sacrifices, performed to honor (tôn vinh) the gods (các vị thần).

captives (tù nhân) were first taken to the city's Templo Mayor, or great temple, where priests (thầy tế, thầy cúng) removed their still-beating hearts.

The bodies were then decapitated (chặt đầu) and priests removed the skin (da) and muscle (cơ) from the corpses (xác chết)' heads.

Large holes were carved into the sides of the skulls (hộp sọ), allowing them to be placed onto a large wooden pole.

They were then placed in Tenochtitlan's tzompantli, an enormous rack of skulls built in front of the Templo Mayor, a pyramid with two temples on top.
