"Drive a coach and horses through" = ngang nhiên dắt cả xe ngựa đi qua -> nghĩa là xem thường điều gì mà không hề bị trừng phạt; phơi bày/bóc trần sai sót hoặc lỗ hổng của cái gì; khiến điều gì trở nên vô ích và không hiệu quả.

Ví dụ
“If he presses ahead he will drive a coach and horses through the very idea that is supposed to underpin (củng cố) the UK – the idea that this union is a partnership of equal nations.”

The defeat at Watford was the worst in a year where they have been some absolute stinkers (người hôi, chướng tai gai mắt). De Gea – for so long United’s saviour when you could drive a coach and horses through the midfield and the defence – is now making too many errors.

Northern Ireland isn’t a colony (nước thuộc địa), but it is in danger of being treated as such if a policy opposed by a clear majority is imposed against its will – a policy which will drive a coach and horses through the two core principles of the agreement: the principle that Northern Ireland’s future will be decided by consent (sự thỏa thuận), not force or might; and the acceptance of difference, the right to be British, or Irish, or both. Democracy and pluralism (tính đa nguyên) in tandem (người nọ ngồi sau người kia).
