'Price gouging' có từ gouge là khoét ra, moi ra, móc ra, lừa đảo, lừa gạt -> từ này nghĩa là tăng giá quá đáng khi nhu cầu (về hàng) tăng cao; nâng giá cơ hội.

Ví dụ
First it was price gouging with hand sanitizer (sát khuẩn tay) and toilet paper. Now the issue is coming up with rental housing (nhà cho thuê).

A San Francisco woman is suing Safeway's parent company in a California district court alleging price gouging on items including toilet paper in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill Saturday that expands New York’s price gouging statute after complaints of jacked-up prices during the COVID-19 pandemic. The measure broadens the state’s price gouging law to include “essential medical supplies (thiết bị y tế) and services,” along with “any other essential goods and services used to promote the health or welfare of the public.”

Cuomo says the legislation will ban price gouging on personal protective equipment (thiết bị bảo vệ cá nhân), in turn helping the public and health care workers have access to the items. The third-term governor said in a statement that there have been too many examples of retailers charging exorbitant prices (giá cao quá đáng, cắt cổ) when it comes to critical (quan trọng, thiết yếu) medical supplies.
