"Walk off the job" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Romain V on Unsplash

"Walk off the job" -> nghĩa là ngừng làm việc, bỏ việc để đình công.

Ví dụ
Nearly 700 mostly Chicago-area nurses (y tá) walk off the job. Workers are demanding (yêu cầu) at least $15 an hour, hazard pay for all employees and a sufficient supply of PPE.

Scores of Angostura workers walk off the job. Reports say over 200 employees abandoned (từ bỏ) their duties yesterday in protest, after they were told they would not be receiving their annual bonus.

More than 7,000 British Gas workers will be called on to walk off the job between January 7th and 11th after GMB members voted overwhelmingly (choáng ngợp) in favour of strike action in response to the company’s fire and rehire proposals.

The day he and his coworkers decided to walk off the job, management had told them there was a COVID-19 exposure at the store and that the location would close, only to abruptly (đột ngột) reverse the decision less than an hour later. When the workers heard the store would remain open, they decided to shut it down themselves.

"A carefully worded reminder" nghĩa là gì?

"A carefully worded reminder" -> nghĩa là lời nhắc khéo.

Ví dụ
I demurred with a carefully worded reminder that I had been too busy to help out when she asked.

ICASA’s press release (thông cáo báo chí) from last week already hints at tensions over its status and role. ICASA notes it is “considering the policy direction” before finalising its own “position” – a carefully-worded reminder of how the independence provisions in the Electronic Communications Act are specified.

In a carefully worded reminder to asset managers of their duties (nghĩa vụ) under the law, the SFC pointed out that the law requires then to notify the SFC if they suspect “any material breach (vi phạm nghiêm trọng), infringement (xâm phạm) or non-compliance (không phù hợp) with the market misconduct provisions of the Securities and Futures Ordinance” that has been committed by their clients.

"A word in season" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Sam Balye on Unsplash

"A word in (out of) season" -> nghĩa là lời nói đúng (không đúng) lúc.

Ví dụ
A word out of season is not at the right time, at the right place can easily cause you trouble.

Thankfully, the Lord can give us wisdom to know how to speak a word in season to those who are ready to listen.

A nation can survive without remembering eternal (vĩnh hằng) things. But the need for humility (khiêm tốn), repentance (ăn năn), forgiveness (tha thứ), and faith (niềm tin) in the future is always a word in season.

At this crucial (quyết định) juncture (thời điểm) in the history of our nation, I bring to you a word in season which, in time to come, may turn out to have been a final warning regarding the imminent storms threatening to hit our nation.

I did not participate in his wild and whirling word; I merely enjoyed the show.

I couldn't bear it, I had to leave the party because of his 'wild and whirling word'.

She was always happy, she was a person that would make a home brighten with her wild and whirling word. She was always making us laugh.

We miss Pa dearly. We miss his smile, his laugh, his 'wild and whirling word'. But most of all during Christmas, we miss him playing the guitar and singing our favourite songs. And he's also missed out on so much that has happened since he left.

Nhìn lại vai trò của McNamara trong Chiến tranh Việt Nam

Ngay từ tháng 10 năm 1963, McNamara đã nói, “chúng ta cần một cách để thoát khỏi Việt Nam.”
...Already in October 1963, McNamara can be heard on the Kennedy White House tapes (băng ghi âm) saying that “we need a way to get out of Vietnam.” Early the next year, he expressed concerns to an impatient  (thiếu kiên nhẫn) Lyndon Johnson about the situation on the ground and future prospects; in these taped conversations, it is Johnson who seems more intent on staying the course (notwithstanding his own fears and frustrations about the conflict), through escalation if necessary. In fact, the deeper one digs into the vast internal record of American decision-making, the clearer a very different McNamara emerges: a defense secretary who by late 1963 had ceased to be — if he ever was — a true believer on Vietnam.

...“The picture of the world’s greatest superpower killing or seriously injuring 1,000 non-combatants a week, while trying to pound a tiny, backward nation into submission on an issue whose merits are hotly disputed, is not a pretty one,” he wrote Johnson in May 1967.

...The ultimate judgment (phán quyết cuối cùng) of McNamara’s role in the Vietnam War must be a harsh (khắc nghiệt) one, less because he presided over the early stages of America’s military involvement than because he did not act more forcefully on his subsequent apprehensions. One could credit him, as Daniel Ellsberg has done, for working from the inside to limit the scope of the bombings and encourage negotiations, and still argue, as Mr. Ellsberg also does, that he should have aired his misgivings publicly — not in his 1995 memoir, or in a brilliant documentary film (Errol Morris’s “The Fog of War”) in 2003, but in 1965, or after departing the administration in 1968. Instead, McNamara was content to be two-faced (kẻ hai mặt), preaching (rao giảng) optimism (lạc quan) and steadfastness (kiên định) in public (and occasionally in internal policy discussions) even as he brooded  (suy nghĩ ủ ê) privately.

"Upon my word" nghĩa là gì?

"Upon my word" -> nghĩa là "có thật không?", "thật chứ?". Thán từ thể hiện sự ngạc nhiên, nghi ngờ.

Ví dụ
"Your two great eyes will slay me suddenly. Their beauty shakes me who was once serene. Upon my word, I tell you faithfully".

My grandmother had a neighbor who made it her business to find out and pass on the town's gossip (lời đàm tiếu). She would arrive unannounced and out of breath. She prefaced (mở đầu) each juicy tidbit (mẩu tin ngon lành) with, "Upon my word and honor...."

Upon my word, not every day does a 102-year-old Mountaineer Momma exclaim to me, “You will be my friend for life!” So thank you, Hazel Haymond Davidson, for making my day. Of course, there is a story behind Mrs. Davidson’s expression of gratitude (lòng biết ơn).

"True to his word" -> nghĩa là như đã hứa.

Ví dụ
Staying true to his word, Gyles has since cooked Michele a slap-up meal...of beans on toast.

True to his word, he has continued to this day to answer calls and texts for support from me and his former students.

My father must have been true to his word because each Christmas morning – probably around 5 a.m. – we would rush downstairs to find our stockings bulging with the small gifts from Santa.

Lakers head coach (huấn luyện viên trưởng) Frank Vogel said he would play James similar minutes to what he would do in a regular season game and he stayed true to his word. James finished with 22 points, five rebound (hồi phục) and five assists (kiến tạo) in 28 minutes of work.

"Suit actions to words" nghĩa là gì?

"Suit actions to words" = hành động phù hợp với lời nói -> nghĩa là thực hiện ngay lời doạ dẫm; thực hiện ngay lời hứa.

Ví dụ
My sister always told us to respect each other and not to bicker (cải vã), but she rarely suited her actions to her words.

If you're going to tell your partners not to incur (gánh vác) excessive (quá mức), unnecessary costs, then you had better be prepared to suit your actions to your words.

We are so happy to see the rise of makers (người sáng tạo) and designers putting their skills to use in response to (ứng phó) coronavirus. To encourage more people to follow the vital steps needed to slow the spread of COVID-19 and suit actions to words, DDMP NL is allying with FROLIC Studio, an Amsterdam-based product design and development studio, who is also not gonna sit back and watch without lending a hand.

Ví dụ
Mark my words, you're in for a rib-splitting (nứt xương sườn) time!

Mark my words, Cesar Chávez will have a very significant presence, no doubt.

He launched into a tirade (đả kích), claiming that psychological reports had not been completed on him and warning the judge that the High Court had "got involved". He said: "Mark my words, this isn’t finished."

God is great . Mark my words when I say evil never win.Only 2 years ago I was in Wisconsin waiting for my husband to serve (thụ án) a sentence (bản án) he didn’t deserve. Last year I was serving with him his community service . We have been antagonized (chống đối) and isolated (cô lập) by “many”. Now we won justice (công lý).

Students at NSW Education language schools obviously have a way with words in whatever dialect they speak with 28 awards at today’s HSC First in Course announcement.

Josuke also lets his fists do the talking since he doesn't really have a way with words. His charisma (sức hút) comes from his actions and his spirits, not flowery speeches (phát biểu hoa mỹ).

Fans remembered this giant pop oh so fondly. One wrote: "Unforgettable." Another added, "Amazingly disgusting but in a good way." Ah, Dr. Pimple Popper has a way with pops and her fans have a way with words.

"That's a fine how-do-you-do" nghĩa là gì?

"That's a fine how-do-you-do" -> nghĩa là tình huống/kết quả không may, tồi tệ; lời nhận xét thô lỗ.

Ví dụ
The hotel’s famous Mizner Fountain was bathed in dramatic (ấn tượng) red lighting, which extended to the elaborate porte cochere and entrance doors. Well now, that’s a fine how-do-you-do, indeed.

It’s okay because you know you’re there for the Margarita pizza and besides, the waitress (nữ bồi bàn) asks if you’d like her to read the menu. “That’s a fine how do you do,” you, laugh. “I have a Master’s degree and can’t read a menu.

That's a fine how do you do from Frank, we just had a drink together! Did I not drink right? I looked at Frank, and I said, 'You hit me! Why the F did you hit me?' And he said the wrong thing to me. He said, 'What are you going to do about it?' And I just reacted since my old street kicked in.

"That's a fine how do you do," Palin said, after a round of "oh-no-you-didn't" yells (la hét) from the crew of Curry, Al Roker and Monday's guest co-host, Meredith Viera.

"Word of mouse" nghĩa là gì?

"Word of mouse" -> nghĩa là chia sẻ, lan truyền thông tin qua mạng; chơi chữ của cụm từ "word of mouth" (truyền miệng) và mouse (chuột máy tính).

Ví dụ
So, while “word of mouth" was always strong, it is the “word of mouse" that has become increasingly important in mobilizing public discourse (thảo luận).

Ever since word of mouth turned to word of mouse, creating an audience of your own has become quite easy. Not to say getting attention is easy, but businesses that sell attention are currently leading the pack.

The second effect has been in terms of a social proof (bằng chứng) quality buffer. In the old days you’d buy a widget from someone, find out it wasn’t very good, resign (từ bỏ) yourself to never buying from that place again, and move on. Today word of mouse – social media, online reviews, etc. – means poor quality has fewer places to hide.

"Words fail me" nghĩa là gì?

"Words fail me" -> nghĩa là không biết nói sao, không nói nên lời vì quá ngạc nhiên, buồn bực hay xúc động.

Ví dụ
Pardon me? So we didn’t see enough in one game against a newly promoted team, only to turn out the next game and STILL not see enough, the latter with half an hour and an extra man against another newly promoted team? Words fail me, I didn’t realise we were THAT bad.

I’ve borrowed from the language of that first coming out to convey my current experiences in whatever small ways I can to those outside my immediate community. But beyond the camaraderie of my group, I still feel like the words fail me, or others are still not quite ready to receive them.

The chief executive of Liverpool Football Club today spoke out about scenes that followed the Reds' title win last week - and said: "Words fail me." The club gave their first boardroom-level interview since the jubilant (hân hoan) moment when Jurgen Klopp and his team secured their first-ever Premier League crown (vô địch), their first for title for 30 years.

"Pause for effect" nghĩa là gì?

"Pause for effect" -> nghĩa là dừng một lúc khi phát biểu để tăng cảm xúc hay có hiệu ứng lớn hơn.

Ví dụ
Kidd amusing and engrossing (làm mê mải, thu hút sự chú ý) his rapt listeners, we sense a stealthily shrewd showman who knows precisely how to dress to project courtly authority, and when to pause for effect or emphasize for impact.

Jeffrey served as chief soil (đất) whisperer for eight years and (pause for effect) was not paid a single cent by taxpayers. It was top mandarin Phil Gaetjens (ScoMo’s former chief of staff and now secretary of the department of prime minister and cabinet) who wrote to the Remittance Tribunal on August 18, on behalf of Scott Morrison, requesting the soil salary.

After a pause for effect, Durbin continued by saying, “I can’t understand why this has become such a novelty (mới lạ) in Washington under the Trump administration, but it has. This attorney general, time and again, has been willing to say whatever this president wanted him to say. Today, he spoke the truth and it made the news.”

In just one generation, we went from being plastic-free — pause for effect — to a level of reliance (phụ thuộc) on plastic that results in 12 million tonnes of plastic entering our oceans every year. That’s a full rubbish (rác thải) truck every minute.

"All gas and gaiters" nghĩa là gì?

Thoải mái được rồi. Photo by Official on Unsplash

"All gas and gaiters" -> nghĩa là tâm trạng thoải mái, dễ chịu.

Ví dụ
They got on well these days, so is all gas and gaiters.

Though there are certain pitfalls (cạm bẫy) such as the manic (thất thường) defending in the box during the opposition press, Lopetegui’s side currently imbues (nhuộm) a great deal of confidence and vigour (hăng hái) that was missing for quite some time in the league games. It’s all gas and gaiters as we head into the season’s first international break. But here’s what Twitterati made of the thumping win.

This ‘special clip’ gives another sneak peek into their rekindled relationship as Cap and Stark could not only be seen strutting the stuff together on the battlefield, but also shaking hands, suggesting it’s all gas and gaiters between them again! Fans had been waiting for this moment in Infinity War, albeit it never happened.

"Damned if you do and damned if you don't" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Andrew Neel on Unsplash

"Damned if you do and damned if you don't" -> nghĩa là làm cũng chết, không làm cũng chết.
Ví dụ
My personal thoughts on Welsh Governments announcement over the weekend. Firstly I would like to ask, would anyone like to be in the politicians shoes (vào tình cảnh)? It’s a damned if you do and damned if you don’t scenario (viễn cảnh).

So, it's almost the damned if you do, and damned if you don't. Because if you go quickly, and if you do it superficially (hời hợt), people are not going to want to get vaccinated.

In a strange case of damned if you do and damned if you don't, Bathurst Regional Council's last meeting of the year will be remembered as much for muddying (làm vấy bẩn) the rules of engagement for local developers as for upholding the rules as set out in the region's Local Environment Plan.

"So clearly what they're planning to do is just say that they're making offers to consult (bàn bạc) with no real content (bằng lòng) to it," Kempton said. "They try to trap the First Nations into a damned-if-you-do-and- damned-if-you-don't scenario. So if they say, 'No I don't want to talk to you on that basis,' Crown governments in the past have turned around and said, 'Oh well you had the chance, and you didn't take it.'

"In full flood" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Jéan Béller on Unsplash

"In full flood" nghĩa là ngập hoàn toàn. Nghĩa bóng là điều gì đang được thực hiện với tốc độ nhanh chóng, nhiệt huyết/ nói dài dòng.

Ví dụ
Project placed in full flood control operation Operations and results during fiscal year.

During my twenty years in Mitchell, I can recall a couple of times when the river was in full flood, and it was said to be the fastest flowing river in Queensland.

According to the statement in Nowairi , the damming up (đắp đập) of the Jordan took place at a time when it was in full flood, just as at the time of the passage of the Israelites it was also in full flood .

If one should see an orator (nhà hùng biện) making a speech at some trial where he was advocate (người biên hộ), a speech in which his eloquence (hùng biện) in full flood was advancing to the succour (trợ lực) of someone in jeopardy (gặp nguy hiểm) or to the conviction or denunciation of rash acts or defaults....

"Verve and élan" nghĩa là gì?

Tràn đầy sức sống. Photo by Alekzan Powell on Unsplash

"Verve and élan" nghĩa là hăng hái và mạnh mẽ.

Ví dụ
Not sure I agree 100% but argued with great verve and elan. "We don’t go out to see you. We go out to see us" is an excellent point - for most restaurants, not all.

MONDAY NIGHT MOVIE - the remake of the 1920 silent film brought a new generation of movie-going viewers. 20th Century Fox matinee-idol (thần tượng) Power’s shining hour in the title role, bringing verve and elan to a character embodying (hiện thân) a hybrid (lai) of Robin Hood.

He flew the thing with great verve and élan, if such was possible. Strangely enough he never crashed it, despite the fact that it took the entire length of the airfield to get airborne (bay lên), seldom rose above twenty feet, and was about manoeuverable (linh động) as a flying dishcloth.

Yo everyone. I started a brewery (nhà máy bia). It's just me and I'm about to become even more poor and tired. Give "us" a follow and retweet @TheFreshStanda1 and I will try to document my decline into bankruptcy (phá sản) with verve and elan. I promise the beer will be passable (khá ổn) (my highest praise.)

"Fill in the blanks" nghĩa là gì?

Điền những gì bạn muốn. Photo by fotografierende from Pexels

"Fill in the blanks" nghĩa là điền vào chỗ trống, tìm các phần còn lại, tự rút ra kết luận.

Ví dụ
One of the simplest and most meaningful gifts to give is a tree ornament (trang trí). Print and fill in the blanks in this template and draw a self-portrait.

Speaking about the iconic role in a recent interview with Esquire, Esposito opened up about his idea for a prequel (phần tiền truyện) called The Rise of Gus that would fill in the blanks of the character's mysterious backstory.

The 2020 NASCAR season is officially in the books, Chase Elliott is the champion, it’s Thanksgiving week, and, well, we’ve decided to sort of phone it in for now. Won’t you help us write an end-of-year recap? Simply fill in the blanks and let your imagination run wild. Just, please, don’t do too good of a job so our editors won’t replace us.

Well, that’s one way to forecast the 2020-21 season, which starts Tuesday night, ends in July, runs 72 games, and because of a global pandemic will be played out on television, but inside near-empty arenas. But the word blank brings a different meaning too, because not only are we in the dark about what’s coming, we’re also left scrambling to fill in the blanks to make any sense of it.

"Clustering illusion" nghĩa là gì?

lính cứu hỏa đến đâu là cháy nhà đến đấy... Photo by Daniel Tausis on Unsplash.

"Clustering illusion" = ảo giác đồng nhất -> nghĩa là nhận ra điểm giống nhau trong một chuỗi sự kiện hoàn toàn ngẫu nhiên; tư duy “đồng nhất tất cả”.

Ví dụ
The Texas Sharpshooter fallacy, also called as a clustering illusion, talks about how the human mind forces itself to find similarities that can be attributed to a common cause, while completely ignoring the differences and turning a blind eye to the probability of randomness.

A great example is that a large cluster of firemen correlates with higher property damage. Obviously these firemen are causing property damage. Or, do more damaging fires need more firemen? A similar one to avoid is the clustering illusion--sometimes random things cluster.

This tendency to see false patterns in randomness is called the Clustering Illusion. In business, you never have the complete information, yet leaders still have to make decisions. So they start seeing patterns where none exist. And all of the sudden, some completely unrelated market analysis, a few competitor press releases, and some customer feedback combine to justify a new strategic direction for your company.
