"Nasty, brutish and short" nghĩa là gì?

"Nasty, brutish and short" = ghê gớm, hung ác và thiếu thốn -> nghĩa là tình hình cuộc sống trong thời chiến, nghĩa khác là tình huống tồi tệ, kinh khủng.

Women understandably want to be free from the threat (mối đe dọa) of violence. The sad truth is that they are asking for the impossible. Many years ago, a British philosopher (triết gia) summed up life as ‘solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short’.
But many of our lawmakers have apparently decided that such efforts are beyond their abilities, or outside their jurisdiction (thẩm quyền), and, being the good originalists that they are, have decided that we should go back to the beginning. To the Law of the Jungle. To a state of nature, everyone for themselves, where life is, as Thomas Hobbes said, “nasty, brutish and short.”
Reminiscing (nhớ lại) over recent happenings, my mind went back to Hobbes' original postulate (yêu cầu) about man. Probably agreeing with Genesis 6: 5-13 in which man's heart was described by God as wicked, evil, corrupt and violent, Hobbes described humans as being in a ‘state of nature' of the jungle. There, it was free-for-all survival of the fittest, reducing man's life to being “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short”.
Humanity will not go back to its premodern (cổ đại) existence, where life was nasty, brutish and short for almost all. But, given where we are now, in terms of our impact on the biosphere (sinh quyển), we will also have to change our behaviour, at least over the short to medium run.
