Once women students started enrolling (thi tuyển), one faculty member was quoted as referring to them as a monstrous regiment of women. They really didn’t think they could keep up with the male students academically (theo lý thuyết) and would be frivolous (lông bông) and distracting for the male students.

Within the quadrangle (sân trong) of New College stands the statue of John Knox, who famously attacked the “monstrous regiment of women”, arguing that female dominion over men was against God and nature.

Besides bearing two female heads of state at a time that was vanishingly rare (John Knox railed against the "monstrous regiment of women"), this story carries something tragic (bi đát) about a queen of the old stamp learning divine right is no match for modern politics.
