"Fans are slans" nghĩa là gì?

"Fans are slans" -> câu nói cho rằng cộng đồng người đam mê phim viễn tưởng có trí tuệ và trí tưởng tượng tốt hơn các cộng đồng khác, mặc dù họ thường bị các cộng đồng khác cho ra rìa, quấy rối. Câu này có liên hệ tới tiểu thuyết viễn tưởng Slan của A. E. van Vogt, trong đó, chủng tộc Slan bị hành hạ, ngược đãi vì có trí thông minh vượt trội hơn người thường.

Pilsch writes that science fiction experienced a “superman boom” starting around 1939. This was driven largely by John W. Campbell Jr., editor of Astounding Stories. Have you ever read the talkbacks whenever race comes up in geek culture? You know, we don’t want to tar all nerds (mọt sách) and all geeks with the same brush, because that’s not the reality of it, but I do think that we’re not a special category, we’re not “fans are slans.” We are human, and we have a lot of weird stuff afoot.
That wasn’t just Asimov exercising his unusually well-developed ego, either; SF fans, droves of them, shared his opinion (quan điểm). "Fans are Slans," the saying went—I wonder how many people these days even remember A.E. Van Vogt’s novel Slan, much less the race of superhuman mutants that gave it its title; a great many fans saw themselves in that overly roseate (lạc quan) light.
Brin’s depiction (miêu tả) of the iconic individual vs. idiotic masses characterizes every Heinlein novel ever written. It’s not that far of a stretch from “fans are slans,” in fact.
