With the overwhelming (to lớn) support I received to make the potter's field monument and memorial (đài tưởng niệm) bench, I am again asking for donations (đóng góp) to help finish raising the remaining funds needed to make the Lewiston Cemetery historical plaque (tấm, bảng) to be placed in the Oakwood section of the cemetery near the oak trees that line the perimeter (vành đai) of the newer section. With the assistance of Mayor Welch and Tom Collister of HAL, we are working together on the final draft outlining its history from 1812 to the present. It will be of cast bronze mounted onto a boulder provided by the Village DPW.
Another local research project recently found that three lynching (bị hành hình) victims, Pete Vinegar, George Robertson and Isaac King, were likely buried in the potter’s field after their murder in 1882. One goal is to identify their remains’ exact location to mark those spots properly.
A joint project of the Kansas Geological Survey, Douglas County Historical Society’s Oak Hill Cemetery Program Committee and Watkins Museum of History aims to uncover and memorialize (tưởng nhớ) the stories of hundreds of people interred (chôn cất) in Oak Hill Cemetery’s potter’s field from the 1860s through the 1910s.
