Imagine if banks had to take $1 in deposits (tiền cọc) for every $1 they lent out (which isn’t true, but just suppose). Even in this world, they would still not be able to pay out all their depositors at once, if they all came running. Because most of the money is locked up in illiquid (kém thanh khoản) assets. Therefore, banks are inherently (vốn đã) fragile (dễ đổ vỡ) creatures — if a bunch of people suddenly get scared that they won’t be able to get their money back, all at the same time, that fear becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and the bank collapses (sụp đổ).
Whatever the reasoning, your experiences make you feel a sense of impending (sắp xảy ra) doom that the rest of the week is going to be just as bad as today. Before you know it, you’re caught up in a self-fulfilling prophecy, where bad things continue to happen to you because you’re only focusing on the negative (tiêu cực) things that are happening.
At the Ladies European Masters in 2016, all Brewerton’s anxieties cruelly manifested (chứng tỏ) themselves. Having obsessed for weeks about shooting an embarrassing score, a self-fulfilling prophecy saw her told by officials that she could not return for the second round after shooting 88 on the opening day.
These social movements depend on numbers, and sympathetic (đồng cảm) people being there. So if folks who are more progressive, more interested in authentic deliberation (thận trọng) are more supportive of racial and gender justice causes—if they think that something bad is going to happen and they leave, then it becomes this self-fulfilling prophecy.
