"Passive vocabulary" = vốn từ bị động -> nghĩa là những từ ngữ người học hiểu nhưng chưa sẵn sàng dùng.
Ví dụ
A learner's passive vocabulary is the words that they understand but don't use yet. This can be compared with active vocabulary, which are words that learners understand and use in speaking or writing. The active and passive vocabulary of a learner changes constantly (liên tục). They start using words, try new meanings, forget words, abandon (từ bỏ) words that have no use, revise words, etc.
A lack of active vocabulary hinders (cản trở) learners from expressing (bày tỏ) their ideas clearly and fluently in their target language. This is what makes the right words take forever to come from your brain to your mouth. Passive vocabulary might help you understand the overall idea of a writing, a talk, or a conversation, but it is active vocabulary that helps you to actually communicate with others.
Read books and articles, watch videos and listen to podcasts to observe (quan sát) how your passive vocabulary is used in context. Then, to increase your active vocabulary you can journal or write about those topics, practise teaching, or participate in tandem (song song với nhau) or conversation classes, for example Learning how your active and passive vocabulary work together is key to achieving fluency and start feeling confident teaching in the language you’re learning
