The term "bamboo network" was coined to conceptualize (khái niệm hóa) connections between businesses operated (vận hành) overseas and ethnic Chinese people throughout the world. It does not have any formal membership or organization; instead, it refers to an informal system of family ties, personal relationships, and guanxi.

Since the turn of the 21st century, post-colonial Southeast Asia has become an important pillar (cột trụ) of the overseas Chinese economy, as the bamboo network represents (đại diện) an important symbol manifesting itself as an extended international economic outpost of China.

Businesses in the bamboo network are primarily small or mid-sized, but some have amassed (chất đống) billionaire fortunes. The leadership style of these businesses tends to be authoritarian (độc tài), with the founder heading up the chain. The leader generally has a moral authority, so there are usually very few issues from those who are subordinate.

This study finds that Chinese OFDI in general and specifically the reversal of the Bamboo Network, or the flowing back of Chinese capital into Southeast Asian economies that initially invested in China’s rise and integration (tích hợp) into the global economy, are conditioned upon geopolitical tensions and convergence in terms of institutional configuration but not institutional distance.
