"Childbed fever" -> nghĩa là các căn bệnh nhiễm trùng sau sinh ở phụ nữ.

Semmelweis wanted to figure out why so many women in maternity (làm mẹ) wards were dying from puerperal (sinh sản) fever — commonly known as childbed fever.
Then Semmelweis noticed that whenever someone on the ward died of childbed fever, a priest would walk slowly through the doctors' clinic, past the women's beds with an attendant (người hầu) ringing a bell.
If Semmelweis' hypothesis was correct, getting rid of those cadaverous (tái nhợt) particles should cut down on the death rate from childbed fever.
The dominant theory at the time was that miasmas (ám khí), or toxic odors, were responsible for causing diseases in people. Semmelweis believed that childbed fever was spread to women in his maternity ward from the hands of doctors who had also performed autopsies.
