If the next six months of 2023 are anything like the first six, the ability of people to normalize global warming may be put to its most severe (gay gắt) test yet. The nation is only two months into the six-month period that the Union of Concerned Scientists calls “Danger Season,” for the likelihood of climate change-amplified heat waves (đợt nóng), severe storms, wildfires, and hurricanes from May through October.
“We are experiencing Danger Season for fully half of the year, when large portions (phần lớn) of the population are facing extreme (khắc nghiệt) weather events that have become more damaging with climate change,” said Senior Social Scientist for Climate Vulnerability Juan Declet-Barreto, who created the map.
After several years of dangerous and costly wildfires back-to-back here in the United States, the recent seasonal outlook for potential wildland fires this Danger Season finds that much of the western United States can expect normal or below-normal fire activity between May and August this year.
Those impacts do not affect everyone equally. In the United States, low-income (thu nhập thấp) communities, many of which are communities of color, already suffer disproportionately (không cân đối) from health and health care disparities and also bear the brunt of Danger Season weather events.
