When linguists (nhà ngôn ngữ học) think about complicated words, we don’t think about rare, two-dollar words like “defenestration”. Instead, we think about the kinds of words that you use all the time without even thinking about it, like “the”. You might not already know that defenestration refers to throwing something out of a window, but once you find out, it’s easy to explain. But what does “the” mean? And, for that matter, what kind of a word even is “the”?
Always listen, especially when someone is bloviating. Few things are better than sitting through an extemporaneous (tùy ứng) ex cathedra discourse. You’ll benefit in one of two ways. If the speaker’s a liar and a fool attempting to impress you with a bunch of two-dollar words and three-dollar claims, consider this useful information about their character and file it away.
In general fiction writing, you can probably get away from scattering (rải rác) a few two-dollar words around, as long as it’s clear from the context what you are trying to convey. Don’t overdo (làm quá) it, though, or your readership will be limited to English teachers and their victims.
