The cabaret tax undoubtedly dealt a major blow to the economic viability (khả năng) of live big band music. But other social and historical factors contributed (đóng góp) to the decline (giảm sút) of big bands and the rise of small groups as well.

Clubs that provided strictly instrumental music to which no one danced were exempt from the cabaret tax. It is no coincidence (trùng hợp) that in the back half of the 1940s, a new and undanceable jazz performed primarily by small instrumental groups — bebop — emerged as the music of the moment.

It was a huge jump for the largely underground, still-nebulous (vẫn còn mơ hồ) bebop revolution to become the fashionable aesthetic of its era. But historical incidents other than the cabaret tax set it in motion, too.

The cabaret tax dropped to 10% in 1960 and was finally eliminated in 1965. By then, the Swing Era ballrooms and other “terperies” were long gone, and public dancing was done in front of stages where young men wielded electric guitars.
