"Talk up" nghĩa là gì?

'Talk sb/sth up' nghĩa là nói để ủng hộ ai/cái gì (to discuss favorably: advocate, promote).

Ví dụ
Republican 2016 contenders invade Iowa to talk up ethanol and court rich donors.

Why software companies like Salesforce, Hortonworks can talk up future results.

And now Boko Haram has joined, IS has even more of a platform from which it can talk up its global mission. This is exactly the sort of propaganda that the group thrives upon.

Google, Apple Talk Up Jobs, Investment in Europe: US tech giants Google and Apple both played up their respective companies’ job creation achievements in Europe this week, as pressure to curtail (tước đi) their dominance (địa vị thống trị) on the Continent mounts from legislators and competitors. Google will train one million Europeans in digital skills by 2016 and set up a digital training hub on the continent... Apple, facing its own European headwinds (gió ngược) in the form of an EU investigation into how much tax it pays in Ireland, this week announced it would spend nearly $2 billion to build its first two data centers in Europe.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic xăm 50 tên người đói nghèo

On 14 February 2015, Paris Saint-German played against Caen at Parc des Princes. For most players this game was just another day on the job. For Zlatan Ibrahimović this was his most important game to date. Underneath his sweater he had 50 new names tattooed (temporary, not permanent). Names of people he'd never met, but still wanted to keep close. Names of some of the 805 million people suffering from hunger today. Two minutes into the match Ibrahimovic scored and took off (cởi) his jersey (áo đấu) to reveal (để lộ) the names. He received a yellow card for the gesture (hành vi).

The campaign was funded by the United Nations World Food Programme, the world's largest humanitarian (nhân đạo) agency fighting hunger worldwide. WFP reaches more than 80 million people with food assistance in 75 countries each year. The WFP adds:
"People suffering from hunger don't often make the front page, yet hunger and malnutrition (kém dinh dưỡng, thiếu ăn) are the number one risk to health worldwide — greater than AIDS, malaria (sốt rét) and tuberculosis (bệnh lao) combined. Today there are 805 million undernourished (không được ăn/chăm nuôi đầy đủ) people in the world. That means one in nine people do not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life."

Câu hỏi chưa được trả lời về Chúa Giêsu

No one has had their life story as thoroughly analyzed as Jesus's. Nearly every moment of Christ's existence has been poured over by scholars and interpreted and re-interpreted. Yet there still remain some gigantic gaps in our knowledge, such as what Jesus did between the ages of 12 and 30.

Following the story of Jesus's birth and early years, the Gospels go strangely silent on their main character for this huge chunk of His life. We've got no idea what Jesus did during adolescence (thời thanh niên) and young adulthood. This gap of information is so glaring that hundreds of books have been written on the subject, all advancing their own pet theories. There's speculation that He visited England, spent time in the desert, or even took the ancient equivalent of a gap year and vanished off to India. On the other hand, He may have simply bummed around Galilee, working as a carpenter.

Ăn để sống hay sống để ăn?

from the Economist, by Giang Le.
-----
"Mr Rhinehart himself uses Soylent for about 80% of his dietary needs. As a result he has not made a trip to the grocery store in years. He owns neither a fridge nor dishes. And he has turned his kitchen into a library."

"A brave new world" nghĩa là gì?

"Woolworth's Sit-In" No.1 -- A Plaque in Downtown Jackson (MS) May 2013. Photo courtesy Ron Cogswell.

'A brave new world' nghĩa là một thời kỳ mới do những sự kiện chính trị quan trọng.

Ví dụ
Mobile World Congress in Barcelona ended with a glimpse (cái nhìn thoáng qua) to a brave new world of mobile technology. The technology experts said, the exhibition also unveiled (tiết lộ) numerous new phones and technologies to the delegates.

American rapper Angel Haze, who has dated model Ireland Baldwin (daughter of Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger), has said, for her, “love is boundary-less. If you can make me feel, if you can make me laugh… then I can be with you. I don’t care if you’re a hermaphrodite (người có cả cơ quan sinh dục đực lẫn cái) or whatever.” Interesting words, and ones that usher in a brave new world of pansexuality.

It's politic in many ways for Woolworths and Coles to talk up (nói để ủng hộ) competition in the grocery industry given the power the duopoly (thị trường do hai công ty độc quyền lũng đoạn) has wielded for so long. If Aldi, Costco or others gain critical mass there could be more price cutting, earnings and share-price falls for the incumbents. That is certainly the experience overseas. It could be a brave new world for the big chains.

Don't spend time with people who don't treat you well

“Learn how to say “no” to people, activities and obligations that don’t bring value to your life.”
Gently let go of those who are not making your life better.

“Don’t tolerate people who don’t treat you well. Period. Don’t tolerate them for financial reasons. Don’t tolerate them for emotional reasons. Don’t tolerate them for the children’s sake or for convenience sake.”

“Don’t settle for mediocre friends, jobs, love, relationships and life.”

Stay away from miserable people… they will consume you, drain you.”

“Surround yourself and only date people that make you a better version of yourself, that bring out your best parts, love and accept you.”
