"Hold a gun to head" nghĩa là gì?

'Hold a gun to (someone's) head' = put a gun to (someone's) head = dí súng vào đầu -> nghĩa là hối thúc/ ép buộc ai đó làm gì, bằng cách đe dọa sẽ có hậu quả xấu nếu bạn không làm.

Ví dụ
Maria, you don't have to move if you don't want to—no one's holding a gun to your head.

Not a man to have a gun put to his head, Mr Riordan was soon tearing up (từ bỏ) the offer (đề nghị) and cancelling future meetings with the union.

The union (liên hiệp, hiệp hội) should follow the established (đã được thiết lập/xác lập) procedures (quy trình) and should not try to hold a gun to the heads of the industry (nền công nghiệp) and passengers (hành khách).

In late 2018, the US stock market (thị trường chứng khoán) tanked (lao dốc), in effect holding a gun to its own head and threatening (đe dọa) to pull the trigger (bóp cò) unless the Fed stopped raising interest rates (nâng lãi suất). The Fed, painfully (đau đớn) aware that an equities bull market (thị trường giá lên) is an existential (tồn tại) threat in today's hyper-leveraged world, quickly caved (rút lui), promising no more rate increases if the market would just put down the gun.

"All in good time" nghĩa là gì?

tương lai tươi đẹp đang rộng mở chào đón. Photo by Simon Maage on Unsplash.
'All in good time' nói đến một thời điểm thuận lợi/ tốt đẹp trong tương lai gần, thời điểm thích hợp sẽ sớm xảy ra. Cụm từ này khuyến khích mọi người hãy biết kiên nhẫn và lặng lẽ, chờ đợi những điều tốt đẹp sẽ tới.

Ví dụ
John: "I'm starved (đói)! When will May get here with the pizza?"
Chris: "All in good time, John, all in good time."

I know you wish your house had sold already, but all in good time.

I recall (nhớ lại) as a child my parents saying the phrase: ALL IN GOOD TIME. It never meant much to an impatient (thiếu kiên nhẫn), gotta-have-it-all-right-now teenager. But now, years ... uh, let's make that decades (hàng thập kỷ) later, it means a great deal (có ý nghĩa rất lớn). If you will relax (thư giãn) and begin saying, Everything in perfect time. And if you'll ENJOY (hưởng thụ) where you are now. And, if you'll be CONTENT (bằng lòng) where you are, THEN you'll find what you're searching for.

"Pay top dollar" nghĩa là gì?

Nhìn là biết tiền Việt mình rồi nhé Photo by Niels Steeman on Unsplash
'Pay top dollar' là trả rất nhiều tiền, đôi khi là trả với mức giá cao nhất.

Ví dụ
“It’s a competitive (cạnh tranh) environment,” Frederickson says. “CEOs (tổng giám đốc) are realizing (nhận ra rằng) that they really have to pay to play (trả tiền để chơi, "xuống tiền"). They have to pay top dollar to get the people they want.”

The rise of Tesla did not only prove that (chứng tỏ rằng) electric cars (xe điện) need not be boring (nhàm chán), glorified (được tôn vinh) golf carts. The rise of Tesla also showed that consumers (khách hàng) from various walks of life (từ mọi tầng lớp xã hội) are willing to pay top dollar for well-designed electric vehicles, simply because they are superior to internal combustion (động cơ đốt trong) cars.

There is a common sentiment (cảm tính) that more data is good. But the reality is that for the vast majority of businesses, you don’t need to collect detailed personal data about customers, because you probably won’t use it. Unless you have a large technical team with security experts (chuyên gia về an ninh) or can pay top dollar for top solutions, the easiest way to prevent a painful hack is to limit the data you collect. – Aaron Schwartz, Passport.
