"Out-Herod Herod" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Artem Maltsev on Unsplash

"Out-Herod Herod" -> nghĩa là rất độc ác, nhẫn tâm. Herod là vua của xứ Judea, ông đã ra lệnh thảm sát hàng loạt em bé trai theo như Kinh thánh để giết chúa Jesus.

Ví dụ
It is useless for us to repeat our praises (lời khen, ca ngợi) of Johnny Thompson, Billy Reeves, and others of the company, as negro (nguời da đen) delineators; they ‘out Herod Herod’ and put the darkies in the ‘peanut gallery’ fairly to the blush.

“They are humble, taking with huge respect every work they stage,” he said. “They do not want to out-Herod Herod, but rather follow what is done in the world and try to absorb (tiếp nhận) the best.”

Nothing can stop the Democrat desire (tham vọng) to MURDER babies. It out-Herod's Herod. Let us hope a RUTHLESS Supreme Court soon protects LIFE.

"Who died and left you in charge" nghĩa là gì?

"Who died and left you in charge?"

He said (in so many words), “Who died and left you in charge? What makes you think you're the ruler and judge over us? Your record ain't squeaky clean (sạch bong).

'Why don't you just tell us next time, Jane, instead of making us guess?' Mary said, looking angrily at her sister.
'Fine, I will, and anyway, who died and left you in charge?'

"It would be a huge help," she said. “So, you'll start with the attic (gác mái)?”
“Sure. Just tell me one thing: Who died and left you in charge?”
She froze, and then, catching my smile, shook her head. “You know, you're an asshole.”

A: "I'm hungry." My stomach is killing me.
B: "No food until we get there."
A: “Who died and left you in charge?”
He smiles for the first time since this morning. “If you were in charge, we'd be headed for Lake Okeechobee.” We slog on without talking. The sound of our splashing (tiếng sóng vỗ) is comforting in a way.

"Be in the charge of" nghĩa là gì?

"Be in the charge of (someone)" nghĩa là phụ trách, giám sát hoặc trông nom ai.

Ví dụ
God says, "Tell you what. You're in charge of three million people.” God told him to go, taking Aaron to speak for him and the staff to perform miracles.

It is also required, when you put Jesus in charge of your life. Make the right choice to deal with your anger, and both you and the people that love you, will be much happier. You can count on that.

“Bryan Cordell is in charge of the micro lab in Madison,” Raoul said, brushing past her attempt to be civil. “You can talk to him directly, I've already paved the way (mở đường) for you since he owes me a favor."

Dr. Jacobs has constructed a complete self-help package for dealing with the nasty, self-immobilizing, behavioral/emotional complex of relegating who is in charge of oneself to something or someone outside our persona.

"Slip a Mickey" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Misunderstood Whiskey on Unsplash

"Slip a Mickey" -> nghĩa là bí mật cho thuốc vào đồ uống của ai đó để khiến họ trở nên bất lực, mất khả năng hành động; đánh thuốc mê.

Ví dụ
She connived (đồng lõa) with George to slip a mickey in Rick Levitan's drink. She was just looking for some fun. Elaine confessed to making out in her office. Elaine is quite a girl. We absolutely adore her for what she is.

This stuff might actually come in handy (có lợi) as there are some of my relatives that I would just love to change their damn attitude (thái độ) when they visit! YEAH...let's slip a mickey to uncle Mickey to mellow (làm cho say) the old bastard out! The only thing is, will this make your "guests" even MORE HUNGRY like what I hear the brownies do??

Wait till Brown runs afoul (húc vào) of the city hall crooks by arresting the wrong criminals. They'll slip him a mickey and then arrest him for drunk (say sỉn) and disorderly.

-----
When no one can see our countenances (tán thành, đồng tình, ủng hộ, khuyến khích), we may behave differently. One study found that children wearing Halloween masks (mặt nạ) were more likely to break the rules (quấy phá) and take more candy (kẹo). The anonymity (tình trạng giấu tên, nặc danh) conferred (trao hoặc tặng (văn bằng hay tước vị)) by masks may be making it easier for protestors (biểu tình) to knock down (hạ xuống) so many statues (tượng).

And indeed, people have long used masks to achieve a kind of plausible (miệng lưỡi khéo léo; hợp lý, đáng tin cậy) deniability (có thể từ chối/khước từ/không nhận). At Carnival festivities (lễ hội) around the world people wear masks, and this seems to encourage greater revelry (cuộc chè chén say sưa; cuộc ăn uống ồn ào), drunkenness (say khướt, say bí tỉ), and lewd behavior (hành vi dâm dật), traits also associated with masked balls. The mask creates another persona. You can act a little more outrageously, knowing that your town or village, a few days later, will regard that as “a different you.”

If we look to popular culture, mask-wearing is again associated with a kind of transgression (sự vượt qua (giới hạn); sự vi phạm (pháp luật...); sự phạm quy, sự phạm tội; hiện tượng biển tiến, hiện tượng biển lấn (vào đất liền)). Batman, Robin and the Lone Ranger wear masks, not just to keep their true identities a secret, but to enable their “ordinary selves” to step into these larger-than-life roles.

And:

The tension of current mask policy is that it reflects a desire for a more obedient (biết nghe lời, biết vâng lời, dễ bảo, ngoan ngoãn), ordered society, for public health purposes above all, but at the same time it creates incentives and inclinations for non-conformity. That is true at least within the context of American culture, admittedly an outlier, both for its paranoia and for its infatuation with popular culture. As a society, our public mask-wearing is thus at war with its own emotional leanings, because it is packaging together a message based on both discipline and deviance.

What can we do to convince people that a mask-laden society, while it will feel weird and indeed be weird, can be made stable and beneficial through our own self-awareness?

"Slip of the lip" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Alireza Dolati on Unsplash

"Slip of the lip" = trượt môi -> nghĩa là lỡ lời, phát âm sai hoặc dùng sai từ.

Ví dụ
With an IQ of 139, I don’t miss too many details regardless of how small and for me it took the slip-of-the-lip with only ONE WORD for the Commissioner to send himself, the Governor and the GOP Party down the drain and that word was LOYALTY (lòng trung thành)!!!

Whether that last sentence was a slip of the lip or not, who knows. But one thing is certain (chắc chắn). “He’s frustrated (nản lòng),” Zimmer said.

Imagine a racing program kept so silent that not even motorsport’s most inquiring (tò mò) minds would be able to figure it out. No leaked (rò gỉ) information, no teasers, no slip-of-the-lip. Dead silence until one month before the biggest racing event of the year.

"Cite chapter and verse" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Dzenina Lukac from Pexels

"Cite/give/have (something) chapter and verse" nghĩa là đưa ra thông tin cụ thể, chi tiết, nói có sách, mách có chứng. "Chapter and verse" ban đầu được sử dụng để chỉ việc đánh số các đoạn trong Kinh thánh, sau này được dùng phổ biến hơn trong các loại văn bản khác.

Ví dụ
But in fact, at the most literal of levels, Askew does not cite “chapter and verse.” Nor could she if she wanted to, for the simple reason that the bible she used had no verse numbers.

The respondent says, “When my opponent gives me chapter and verse for the institution of sacrifice (hiến tế), then it will be time enough for me to give chapter and verse for the origin and authority of the Jewish State Church.”

We can give chapter and verse where God commanded the sprinkling (rảy, rải rác) of pure water as a religious rite (lễ nghi), ceremony or sacrament (lễ ban thánh thể)—where He commanded one man to sprinkle another with water.

The reader will have to learn to find some things on their own if they feel need to confirm such statements at this juncture (trong tình hình này). I have provided many citations and references in the book; however, most often the deeper revelations of biblical study unfortunately are not as simple as citing chapter and verse.

"Blacken my character" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by 任力 from Pexels

"Blacken one's character" nghĩa là nói xấu, bôi nhọ tên tuổi của ai.

Ví dụ
Hunt complains that the True Sun tried to blacken his character. He makes a mistake, it tried to throw a light upon it, as a True Sun should do.

There are occasions when it is justifiable (hợp lý) and proper for a man to make statements, either verbally, or in writing, or by printing, concerning another, which may tend to blacken his character or to defame (phỉ báng) him.

These enemies have combined to blacken my character throughout the country, by means of the telegraph and the Press of the Colony, and have compelled (ép buộc) me to appeal to this House to examine into the charges made against my honor.

I have reason to believe that the attempt is not for the purpose of throwing any light on the subject before you, but to blacken my character by innuendo (ám chỉ); and I desire, if the committee sees fit to go outside of my character for veracity (chân thực), to be allowed to summon (triệu tập) witness touching the moral character of all the parties who are engaged, as I am informed, in the effort to blacken my character.

"Stay in character" nghĩa là gì?

Khó thoát vai chứng tỏ diễn viên quá nhập tâm. Photo by Luis Quintero from Pexels

"Stay in character" = gắn liền với nhân vật -> nghĩa là luôn bám sát vào đặc điểm, tính cách của nhân vật mà diễn viên vào vai.

Ví dụ
That state of mind brought mounting anxiety and panic which he sought to quell (chế ngự) by forcing himself to relax, stay in character and think like, act like, and be Glenn.

It is important that both of you have well defined personalities and that you stay in character as you perform. No matter how funny a joke is, don't use it unless it fits your personality.

What do we learn about a character then? What does that character learn about himself? How does he change because of it? Characters change each other. Does your character always stay in character, acting and reacting in ways that only he would do?

The rest of the class may ask the crimebusters (người ngăn chặn tội phạm) about their cases, their attitudes toward crime, and so on. Crimebusters should “stay in character.” You've probably seen it in movies. The police arrive, but. Think about the stories in Crimebusters.

"High opinion" nghĩa là gì?

dù được đánh giá cao nhưng vẫn sẽ bị dỡ bỏ thôi...* Photo courtesy: Mobilus In Mobili.

'High opinion' nghĩa là đánh giá cao, cho là tốt, là đúng.

Ví dụ
Swift's friend, Ed Sheeran, also has a very high opinion of Alwyn. "He's really nice," Sheeran said on Capital London's Breakfast Show (via the Daily Mail) when asked about Swfit's boyfriend. "Really, really friendly, really good dude."

I have a very high opinion of Robert E. Lee as a man and as a general. But I fully acknowledge those who consider him a traitor (phản quốc) who caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands in the defense of slavery (chế độ nô lệ).

While Mourinho, now manager of Tottenham Hotspur, is unlikely to go in for Henderson despite his high opinion of the 23-year-old, it does suggest that Henderson is ready to challenge De Gea for a place between the sticks.

I gave a partial answer, which was both true and important: I said Mattis was “good at not doing what he didn’t want to do” and that he had “a high opinion of his own opinion.” With that, Trump was off, explaining that he didn’t trust Mattis and how tired he was of constant press stories about Mattis’s outwitting (khôn hơn, mưu mẹo hơn, láu hơn; đánh lừa) Trump.

* BLM Statue, RVA. Robert E. Lee was a U.S. Army Colonel who turned against his oath and served as a leader in the Confederate Army, which waged war against the United States during the Civil War. This statue in Richmond, Va, which honors him, is part of a series of Confederates who are memorialized along Monument Boulevard in Richmond, VA. In June 2020 the Governor of Virginia announced it would be removed. Although the Confederacy fought to defend the institution of slavery and lost the Civil War, Lee, along with 10 other Confederate generals, still have active U.S. Army forts named after them as of 2020.

"Tall order" nghĩa là gì?

tự nguyện thì dễ hơn là ép buộc, khó cho cảnh sát... Photo by Arturo Rey on Unsplash

'Tall order' = mệnh lệnh cao -> nghĩa là điều gì đó rất khó làm, khó thực hiện.

Ví dụ
Tiger Woods' form is improving but a Major bid is a tall order.

Stothert said her main concern is enforcement (ép thực thi). If it’s a mandate (mệnh lệnh hành chính), people will face consequences (gánh chịu hậu quả) for not following the law — a tall order for police.

Tall order for new Petronas CEO: INCOMING Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) president and group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz (picture) is widely expected to defuse tensions (giải tỏa căng thẳng) between the national oil giant and the Sarawak state government, as lengthy disputes (tranh cãi lê thê) will only add further uncertainty that would upset investors.

“The biggest challenge for Model Y continues to be attracting new consumers, which is a tall order in the short term due to financial uncertainties faced by many Americans and consumers around the world."

Since my days in George W. Bush’s Administration, I had wanted to extricate the United States from the INF (Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces) Treaty. This may seem like a tall order, but I had been there before.
