Many economists roll their eyes at the popular title (danh hiệu) we've given this period of time. To them, the Great Resignation doesn't describe what's going on at all. "A lot of the trends (xu hướng) we've seen were happening before," said Julia Pollak, chief economist at employment marketplace ZipRecruiter. Those trends include retiring baby boomers, low birth rates and the shift to remote work, she said. "The pandemic accelerated them at least 20 to 30 years."

This has all culminated (đạt cực điểm) in the “great resignation” — a phenomenon (hiện tượng) of mass employee exodus sending shockwaves throughout the economy. Many have discussed the great resignation in a largely negative light: employers are forced to allot (phân công) excessive resources to retention and recruitment efforts, with higher wages either eating into corporate profits or cascading to the consumer in the form of higher prices.

The stories of what many are calling “The Great Resignation” aren’t hard to find, especially in the Bay Area. In October, 4.2 million Americans quit their jobs, down 2.8% from a record high of 4.4 million in September.
