Nhà nước bao đồng quá

tìm cách hạn chế sóc sinh sản,

-> hẳn phải là những chiếc bao cao su rất nhỏ :D

Environment minister (bộ trưởng bộ môi trường) Lord Goldsmith says the damage (thiệt hại) they and other invasive (xâm chiếm, xâm lấn) species (loài) do to the UK's woodlands costs the UK economy £1.8 billion a year.

The bizarre-sounding plan is to lure grey squirrels into feeding boxes only they can access with little pots containing hazelnut spread.

These would be spiked with an oral contraceptive.

Hồi đó làm bằng tre đấy

tự nhiên tìm thấy... bao cao su 120 năm tuổi ở Nhật Bản :D
...The condom (bao cao su) was found by the owner (chủ nhà) of a kominka, or classical Japanese folk house, in the town of Shikamachi, Ishikawa Prefecture. The house has now been converted (chuyển đổi) into an inn (nhà trọ) for travelers, and the owner found the condom in the adjacent storehouse (nhà kho liền kề), which makes one wonder if the storehouse was used for amorous (đa tình, si tình, say đắm) rendezvous (nơi gặp gỡ) by its original owners.

Specifically, it was a Yamato Kinu-model condom that was found. One of the first mass-marketed condoms in Japan, the Yamato Kinu earned its popularity (được ưa thích, phổ biến) by being billed as a line of protection (bảo vệ) against infections (nhiễm trùng) of syphilis (giang mai), which saw major outbreaks (bùng phát) around the turn of the 20th century in Japan, where it’s known as baidoku (literally “plum poison” (chất độc từ quả mận)). This is believed to be the only Yamato Kinu condom still in existence, and while its exact age (niên đại chính xác) hasn’t been determined (chưa xác định), newspaper ads for the product from 1896 have survived, so it’s estimated that the condom was sold sometime around then.

Although Yamato Kinu translates as “Japanese clothing” or “Japanese silk,” the condom was actually made in France and imported (nhập khẩu từ pháp) to Japan by Morishita Jintan, as manufacturing technology at the time in Japan was insufficient to make them domestically.

"Be in for a surprise" nghĩa là gì?

"Be in for a surprise" = sẽ ngạc nhiên đấy -> nghĩa là chắc chắn sẽ chịu hậu quả không như mong muốn, không tốt đẹp.

Ví dụ
For those coming in and expecting Four Tet, you’ll be in for a surprise. You can definitely feel his influence on the music, but the reason for Madlib’s solo name on the album is clear as you listen top to tail. If you are short on time, our pick of the bunch has to be ‘Loose Goose’.

England batsman Jos Buttler on Saturday talked of how the Indian Premier League (IPL) has given him and some other England players some idea of how to face Jasprit Bumrah's unique action and the angles he bowls with, but the England wicketkeeper-batsman could be in for a surprise if Bumrah decides to bowl leg-spin in Anil Kumble's style which he seems to be working on.

I guess I'm a pessimist (bi quan) - and a very much hope that I am in for a surprise. But hoping something will be the case is not the same as believing it will be, and I'm afraid I just can't see how we can escape a recession, given that our economy does not operate in isolation, and the effects of Covid on the economies on our major trading partners.

"Be in another world" nghĩa là gì?

"Be in another world" = ở một thế giới khác -> nghĩa là chìm đắm trong suy tưởng hoặc mơ mộng vì thế không để ý đến xung quanh.

Ví dụ
I am not what I ought to be, I am not what I want to be, I am not what I hope to be in another world; but still I am not what I once used to be.

The Aquarians are regarded as the strangers of the zodiac (hoàng đạo), because they live in their own way and are often extravagant (vô lý, ngông cuồng). They seem to be in another world by being absent-minded (đãng trí), like when Forrest gives his speech and Abbie Hoffman does not realize that the microphone is disconnected.

Wooten emphasized that short stories and longer works by King provided both escape and brain food. But while he enjoys audiobooks from King and others, particularly for a boring commute, he said it doesn't provide the same benefits. "Your concentration when you read, having to interpret the words, that's what puts you in the state of mind where you can forget your stress and be in another world," Wooten explained. "Audio, not so much. Listening to a book allows you to concentrate on something else, like driving, and you're just engaging with the book as the secondary function. You don't lose yourself."

"Bottom of the bag” nghĩa là gì?

"Bottom of the bag” = dưới đáy túi (ảo thuật) -> nghĩa là mưu mẹo cuối để đối phó với (ai).

Ví dụ
I'm at the bottom of the bag—do you have any suggestions for how to get out of this situation?

"Honestly, Jess is at the bottom of the bag, she would do anything to get that position." Tom said.

Alex: Did you see John get some hand-sanitizer and use it style his hair?
Jerry: Yeah, that was kind of bottom of the bag for him to do that.

"Honey trap" nghĩa là gì?

Thảo nào nhiều anh sa bẫy quá!! Photo by Junior Moran on Unsplash

"Honey trap" = bẫy mật ong -> nghĩa là mỹ nhân kế; nghĩa khác là địa điểm hút khách du lịch, thường là để moi tiền du khách.

Ví dụ
In another honey trap incident, the city police on Friday arrested (bắt giữ) two persons who allegedly extorted (moi) money from a businessman after taking his photographs with a woman in his moving car.

A 33-year-old man was lured (dụ dỗ) into a ‘honey trap’ attack by his partner and then severely (gay gắt) beaten with a baseball bat in Dovedale Close, Harefield, in Uxbridge on August 18, 2019.

A woman has revealed how she asked her best friend to honey trap her boyfriend after she became suspicious (tình nghi). TikTok user Lottie Passco revealed how she asked her friend Meg to message her now ex from a fake Instagram account to see if he would respond to her.

The number of honey trap cases has increased exponentially (theo hàm mũ) since the pandemic broke out, he says. Akancha Srivastava, founder of Akancha Against Harassment, says that this increase can simply be attributed to an increase in reporting.

"Be off your food" nghĩa là gì?

"Be off one's food" -> nghĩa là không muốn ăn, không đói do đau ốm.

Ví dụ
‘Ah well,’ observed the mate laconically (ngắn gọn, vắn tắt) as he poured himself another tumbler of rum. ‘It isn’t a dead loss. As the doctor said, if we keep taking our medicine and the wind ever drops, you won’t be off your food and the island girls better watch out when me and the boys get ashore (trên bờ, vào bờ).’

I ‘celebrated’ my diagnosis (chẩn đoán) with Prosecco but regretted that the next day. (In case my doctor reads this, I did not take any Valium that day!) Water is just fine. I am off my food, so it is little and often. One chunk of chocolate every two or three hours! Although, the lemon cake Pascoe has just wafted under my nose looks very tempting.

Siân said she felt "generally run down", had constant headaches and was off her food when she first started to become unwell in May 2020. "I just thought I was busy with work. It wasn't the classic symptoms of Covid so at first I didn't do anything about it," she recalled. "Then the week after I was in work again and I had a dry cough and my temperature was going up and down. I was told to go home and get a test.

"Be off your chump" nghĩa là gì?

"Be off one's chump" có chump là cái đầu, người ngu đần, ngốc nghếch -> cụm từ này nghĩa (lóng) là phát điên, phát cuồng lên, mất trí.

Ví dụ
“He must be off his chump!” (Such a Faragey way to put it; it does sometimes feel as if his entire vocabulary was cribbed from a 1950s issue.

His first reaction was to tell me: “You must be off your chump,” a view also held, it has to be said, by the majority of his colleagues, but at least he and few others did me the honour of administering a skinful of the aforementioned medicine in the hotel bar the night before and into the small hours.

Rooted to the ground, meanwhile, and never close to take-off velocity (tốc độ, nhanh nhẹn), is Sparrow. When we meet him on the island of St Martin he is off his chump on rum and so down on his luck that he pawns the magic compass that guides the bearer to wherever they most wish to be. Clearly it doesn’t work in real life, or Depp would have been somewhere else. Anywhere else.

"Be not up to much" nghĩa là gì?

"Be not up to much" = không đáng gì nhiều -> nghĩa là đáng thất vọng hoặc kém chất lượng.

Ví dụ
On the road, the engine is still driving all four wheels and what with the weight of the heavier drivetrain and a shape rather less aerodynamic (khí động lực) than a small barn, performance is not up to much and neither is economy for such a small vehicle.

The crisis has also deepened concerns among Tories about the quality of the ministers in the cabinet. One former minister said that what was needed now was “the A team”, but that this was not what Johnson had appointed. “We have got a very inexperienced cabinet dealing with problems the like of which nobody has ever seen before,” he said. “A lot of them are not up to much and none of them are fantastic, not any of them. When Johnson came in, they put the A team on the backbenches.”

“We are owed a refund because the product is not up to scratch. Clearly, virtual teaching is not up to much otherwise surely it would have been instituted years ago,” said Samuel Hall, a third-year history and politics student at Aberystwyth University. “Refunds would help poorer students with the tech support that's needed. I'm financially fine but if, worst case scenario, my phone and laptop gave up in the same week, I would effectively be excluded from my learning.”

“Be no respecter of persons” nghĩa là gì?

“Be no respecter of persons” -> nghĩa là đối xử với mọi người như nhau (không phân biệt địa vị, giàu nghèo...)

Ví dụ
Sullivan brags, "I am no respecter of persons in this case. I wish the newspapers would call these people by their right name.

In recent times, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) says there has been a sharp increase in the prevalence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) among people between 50 and 60 in the country. The diseases, which have been described to be no respecter of persons, have been reported among very young person who are 27 and below.

In 2004, I had the privilege of giving Martin’s eulogy (lời ca, tán dương) before a packed crowd. The diversity (tính đa dạng) of faces and their stories reminded me that his maxims are based on biblical principles, not personalities. He often called the Bible “God’s word in verbal propositional form,” for all people regardless of their heritage (nhà thờ, giáo hội, tài sản) or position. “God is no respecter of persons.”

“Be near to impossible” nghĩa là gì?

“Be near to impossible” -> nghĩa là khó khăn đến nỗi gần như không thể giải quyết.

Ví dụ
According to the Firo team, the attack would be near to impossible had they already deployed Chainlocks, a secondary validation layer aimed at mitigating this type of attacks.

VC-backed founders not only end up having less and less shares in their company, but they usually also experience a lot more pressure than founders who are bootstrapping (tự bản thân cố gắng vươn lên). The reason for this is that you usually have to set very ambitious growth targets, which are near to impossible to achieve.

The running joke on the internet this week is that Dry January is over. We get it. Staying away from booze when the news cycle just won’t let up is near to impossible. But there’s still that small sliver of you that won’t quit. For the few of you still hanging on, we’ve rounded up a list of tasty, non-alcoholic beverages (đồ uống không cồn) to enjoy on your next visit to the bar. These mocktails are complicated, well-balanced and contain everything you expect from a solid cocktail, minus the booze. Drink to your health, folks!

“Be laughing out of the other side of your mouth” nghĩa là gì?

“Be laughing out of the other side of one’s mouth” = cười ở phía bên kia cái miệng -> nghĩa là mếu máo cười vì thật ra chuyện đó không đáng cười; dù hiện tại vui vẻ, thành công nhưng sau này rắc rối cũng có thể xảy ra với mình.

Ví dụ
This would be a little disconcerting (làm rối, đảo lộn) to witness. The phrase comes from a person making money in a way that others doubted would succeed. This made me think of the inventor of Chia Pets. She'll be laughing out of the other side of her mouth. This means that she'll humbly learn her view was wrong. I can't be sure which is the humble side of the mouth. This report card is no laughing matter.

That is a fresh debate in the ongoing "Paul Henry: Racist or Victim?" series in New Zealand, India and across the Internet. Paul Henry, for those who came in late, is the New Zealand anchor who infamously giggled on TV about Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit's name and then had to laugh out of the other side of his mouth when he lost his job. (Read: New Zealand TV anchor quits amid uproar (ồn ào, náo động) over Sheila remark)

In keeping with Fate’s perverse nature, the boot is now firmly on the other foot. Thanks to untrammelled (không bị ngăn trở, hạn chế) property development, chaotic state of the city’s creaking infrastructure (cơ sở hạ tầng kêu cọt kẹt) and general apathy (thờ ơ, ảm đạm) of the ministerial powers that be, Bangalore’s roads are in a parlous (bấp bênh, nguy hiểm) state. To add insult to injury, on a recent visit to Calcutta, I found the roads there eminently motorable, and driving through the old city’s streets posed no immediate threat to my spinal column. My pals could barely hide their sly grins at my having ‘deserted’ the City of Joy, and I was laughing out of the other side of my mouth.

“Be just before you're generous” nghĩa là gì?

“Be just before you're generous” = (hãy) đúng/đủ trước khi (muốn) hào phóng -> nghĩa là cần làm điều phải làm trước khi (có thể) làm điều mình muốn; (phải) trả nợ trước khi (có thể) cho tiền/từ thiện...

Ví dụ
Just before you're generous! You haven't paid your debts since 2 years.

She always tries to look as a rich kid to be more respectful but she's actually poor and lazy. Why not be just before you're generous?

Giving away is good but you should consider about your monthly salary, if you don't have a lot money to give. I think you should do more jobs for extra money. Then, you can be just before you're generous.

“Be in your dotage” nghĩa là gì?

“Be in one’s dotage” -> nghĩa là lẩm cẩm, lú lẫn do già cả.

Ví dụ
She added, “I think it’s sad they don’t want to be part of the family gathering, particularly now that the queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are in their dotage. The queen might be a little hurt but she’s far too gracious (hòa nhã, lịch thiệp, tốt bụng) to ever let it show or be known.”

Although he is in his dotage and there’s no world title around his waist, Mike Tyson is still a champion by heart, as he is ready to take on the former four-division champion Roy Jones Jr. on November 28. However, Tyson is not returning for money or fame. Instead, his return will stage a charitable venture to help people all over the world.

You don’t have to be in your dotage to recall the flaxen flanker’s (người tấn công bên sườn bằng lanh) mischievous habits (thói quen tác hại, ranh ma), whether by way of a piratical (có tính chất cướp bóc) playing style that suggested he thought the offside line was something for others to worry about or his infamous reshaping of the Calcutta Cup on a nocturnal rampage (hành vi bạo lực hoành hành về đêm) around the streets of Edinburgh.

"Snap it up" nghĩa là gì?

"Snap it up" -> nghĩa là nhanh tay mua món đồ gì trước khi hết hàng; nhanh tay hốt lẹ.

Ví dụ
At least not until last Sunday, when Hauck, on a whim, decided to go looking once again on Etsy. This time she hit the jackpot because lo and behold, there was the painting (bức họa) once again. With the help of her friend, Kasie Baker, she was able to snap it up and by Thursday, it was in her possession.

With 13 products from brands (nhãn hiệu) such as ELF, L’Occitane, Kiehl’s Since 1851 and Bare Minerals worth over £125, our 2021 collection can be yours for just £32. Snap it up now!

The building went up for auction (đấu giá) in the fall and the county stepped in, using its coronavirus relief CARES Act money to snap it up for $19.5 million on Dec. 1.

And if you were to dig deep into your pockets to snap it up, your new neighbours would include former British Lions and Wales rugby captain Sam Warburton.
