"The pink dollar" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Jasmin Sessler on Unsplash

"The pink dollar" = đồng dollar hồng -> nghĩa là chi tiêu tập thể hoặc sức mua bán của cộng đồng LGBT.

Ví dụ
Taiwan is one of the friendliest countries in Asia toward the gay community and the government hopes to cash in on the pink dollar by making a feature of this fact.

But queer people can also smell the bullshit (vớ vẩn). Take Rita Ora’s shameless single ‘Pride’ from last year (produced in partnership with Absolut vodka), or Iggy Azeala’s reliance on Drag Race cameos in her recent comeback singles — it’s obvious they’re chasing the pink dollar, because the pink dollar is reliable (đáng tin cậy). It’s up to the individual whether they take the bait; a bop’s a bop, and some are happy with the transaction.

Australia’s historic move toward legalizing (hợp pháp hóa) same-sex marriage could bring businesses a massive windfall (của trời cho) of “pink dollars” as tens of thousands of gay couples tie the knot, economists said on Nov. 15.

"The gray dollar" nghĩa là gì?

"The gray dollar" = đồng dollar màu ghi -> nghĩa là sức mua bán kinh tế của nhóm người cao tuổi.

Ví dụ
As hits like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel have demonstrated (chứng minh), the gray dollar is a mighty force, and there’s no reason that market couldn’t also be tapped by a foreign-language film from outside the usual travel-friendly territories (địa bàn).

I do worry though that in our capitalist (tư bản) world, “inclusive” can become shorthand for expanding the market reach, for example getting more of the “gray” dollar (retired people) or the “pink” peso (lesbian and gay travelers).

The European Aging Economy was sized at $4 Trillion, by Oxford Economics on behalf of the European Union, roughly 20% of European GDP. Regardless of what ratio we pick, there is growing awareness of the sheer magnitude (tầm rộng lớn) of the “gray dollar” and the fact that with today’s demographic (nhân khẩu học) trends it will be growing faster than the overall economy.

"Ply for hire" nghĩa là gì?

"Ply for trade/hire/business" có ply là đón khách -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đợi một chỗ, chạy loanh quanh để đón khách ( người lái taxi, người chèo thuyền,...).

Ví dụ
A former hackney carriage (xe cho thuê) taxi driver from East Lancashire has been fined (phạt tiền) £420 for continuing to ply for hire after having his licence revoked (thu hồi).

The law allows the number of hackney carriages – taxis, which are licensed to ply for hire, as opposed to private hire vehicles – to be capped if councillors are sure there is no significant unmet demand.

PRIVATE HIRE vehicles (or minicabs (xe ô tô cho thuê)) are public transport vehicles. However, a private hire vehicle cannot ply for hire or stand in a rank. It must be pre-booked with a private hire operator e.g. through the operator usually by telephone.

"Put (someone) out of (something/some place)" nghĩa là bắt buộc ai rời khỏi hoặc ra ngoài cái gì hoặc nơi nào đó.

Ví dụ
They’ve gotten “displaced (di chuyển, đổi chỗ ở) twice,” she said. They’re “already homeless, living in a homeless park. And then they put you out of the homeless park. It’s the lowest of the low. We need someone to care.”

Even though today's job market (thị trường việc làm) is strong, the competition is still fierce (khốc liệt). These follow-up tips may put you out of your comfort zone, but think of how uncomfortable will you feel being declined for the position you were so excited about.

“I guess the neck sounds a bit more serious, but knees, ankles (mắt cá chân), shoulders, you know, anything can put you out of the game at any time, so we’re always living on the edge as players and the staff, the coaching staff, the medical staff … I’m obviously so grateful for their loyalty and the work they have put in to help me get fit.”

"Put (someone) onto (someone/something)" nghĩa là cảnh báo ai về sự tồn tại của người nào đó hoặc của điều gì; đưa ai đến gặp người nào đó, đặt lên cái gì hoặc xem điều gì.

Ví dụ
“My mother and my grandmother had to lift me off the wheelchair and put me onto the toilet seat,” she tells us. The indignity (sự nhục nhã) of it all sent her spiralling into a deep depression and she counted her lucky stars when her body finally healed, and she was able to walk again.

“Amy Settles, she was so nice. She took care of everything that I needed and she even put me onto a grant (tài trợ, trợ cấp) to where they would pay me to go to school as well," said Miller. "I got paid to go to school and they paid for the schooling. I don’t see how you can go wrong with that.”

Sadia is a certified (được chứng nhận) nutritionist (chuyên gia dinh dưỡng) before she started PUL and when the channel took off, she started to work on it full time. She makes some A-M-A-Z-I-N-Gc recipes that are easy to make but nutritious and healthy at the same time. Her vlogs are fun to watch when she travels with her partner. I also love her mindfulness tips and tricks because it helps me feel better and more productive on a slow day. BTW, she put me onto almond butter, I know I’m late to the party but it’s actually really yummy.

"Take care of business" nghĩa là làm bất cứ điều gì cần thiết để giải quyết một việc gì đó, phát triển, xoay sở, đương đầu với một tình huống nào đó; lo liệu công việc.

Ví dụ
Wouldn't you love to know what things are going to be like in 20-years? Add to that the knowledge that there are bad guys out there who wish you harm. Then there is the fact you have to take care of business today.

"It's a hard one since we're the only undefeated (chưa bị đánh bại) team this season," Bentley said of the NCAA's decision. "We can't dwell in the past. It's just one more game to play and, hopefully, we can take care of business."

To get there, the Bombers (10-7) first need to take care of business against the Calgary Stampeders Friday night at IG Field. A win would not only keep their dream of second place in the CFL's West Division alive, it would also avenge (trả thù) last week's 37-33 road loss to the Stampeders.
