"Look to laurels" nghĩa là gì?

"Look to (one's) laurels" = Chỉ ngắm nhìn vòng nguyệt quế của mình -> lưu tâm bảo vệ vinh dự đã đạt được; phòng ngừa kẻ địch.

Ví dụ
The basic take-away from this new research is that incumbent equipment providers are going to have to look to their laurels and lower prices if thay want to retain market share.

She recently appeared in a bizarre (kỳ quái, kỳ dị) YouTube video with the New York skyline in the background. It looked as if she was auditioning for the old David Letterman show. The current king of late-night TV in America, Britain’s James Corden, might have to look to his laurels.

Indeed, the publication seemed more interested in domestic rivalries (sự cạnh tranh, đua tài) than competition from abroad. “Other features which stood out very markedly were the prominence of Yorkshire tool makers and the paucity of exhibits from the neighbouring county, Lancashire,” it remarked. “A pronounced change has come over the comparative positions in the machine tool industry of these two counties during the last few years, and it is high time that Lancashire began to look to her laurels.”

"Juice joint" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Sérgio Alves Santos on Unsplash

"Juice joint" nghĩa là một cơ sở bán rượu lậu.

Ví dụ
Attendees assumed the roles of party goers at a swanky speakeasy called The Juice Joint. After the murder of mob boss Notorious Nick, guests pieced together clues they got from interacting with the other characters.

You’ll have to use the Tompkins County Public Library’s “secret door” for entrance to this juice joint. For one night in October, the library will transform into a 1920s speakeasy with music, craft cocktails, treats and games from the era.

Jan. 31, 7-9 p.m., the Indiana History Center at 450 W. Ohio St. is hosting Moonshine Mayhem: A Prohibition Party. “Bust out your best duds for an evening of fancy flappers for the 100th anniversary of prohibition,” reads the notice. “Join the spirited debate to avoid a drunkard’s (sâu rượu) fate or dodge the fuzz to find our juice joint.”

"Look its best" nghĩa là gì?

"Look its/(one's) best" = Vẻ bề ngoài tuyệt nhất có thể, như được chỉn chu thật đẹp (làm cô dâu, chú rể), ăn mặc thật đẹp.

Ví dụ
Note for grooms-to-be: Take it from a man who's been through it before. Your lady deserves to look her best, so as budget as we're trying to be here, you should at least give her this.

“We make every effort to achieve each bride’s unique vision, no matter what that is,” she said. Her Littleton spa has a crack team of estheticians (chuyên gia thẩm mỹ) and stylists who can recreate the newest, the hottest, or the most classic bridal styles so you can look your best on your wedding day.

We want you to have a good hair day. Nay, a good hair year. And to do that, you’ve got to think about making some changes. We’re not suggesting that your current hairstyle needs an edit, but in order to get the most out of it — or rather, in order for it to look its best every single day — you might benefit from a resolution or two.

"Make look ridiculous" nghĩa là gì?

"Make (one) look ridiculous" = Làm cho ai trở nên ngớ ngẩn, lố bịch và ngu ngốc.

Ví dụ
To the Right, it is a given that we are funded by Bloomberg himself, or trained by shadowy forces to make them look ridiculous or violent.

But he wasn’t much good on the field. Tannehill had an often hilarious capacity for confusion. Quarterback (tiền vệ) may be the hardest position to play in sports because, more than any other, it can make elite athletes look ridiculous. Tannehill, 31, made it look harder and more ridiculous than just about anyone else.

However, Sheamus recently revealed that's not what WWE's creative team had in mind for him when he came back. The former WWE Champion told talkSPORT that the plan was to make him look even more ridiculous this time around. "A small mustache (râu mép, ria), and suspenders and my hair go over to the side…it looked almost exactly like Jack Gallagher from 205 Live," Sheamus revealed were some of the notes he received about a potential new look.

"Juice them up" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Riccardo Annandale on Unsplash

"Juice something up" nghĩa là bật điện của thiết bị, vật dụng nào đó; làm hoạt động lên, làm hăng hái lên, làm hứng khởi lên.

Ví dụ
Subsequently, Xiaomi and rivals (đối thủ) Realme, Vivo, Oppo, and Samsung not only launched cheaper phones with fast charging, but also amped up the charging wattage (điện năng) to juice them up even quicker.

The company is focused specifically on level 4-5 autonomy, meaning their radar isn’t intended for basic features like intelligent cruise control or collision (va chạm) detection. But radar units on cars today are intended for that, and efforts to juice them up into more serious sensors are dubious, Frankenberg said.

The vacuums (máy hút bụi) quietly clean for 100 minutes per charge, and self-charge when the battery gets low so you don’t have to worry about remembering to juice them up. The machine can easily maneuver (chuyển động khéo léo) from hardwood to carpet, making sure your whole house is clean no matter the surface.

Mình ăn Tết, hay Tết ăn mình?

shared from fb nguyễn việt hà,

——

"A kick in the shins" nghĩa là gì?

"A kick in the shins" = đá vào cẳng chân -> nghĩa là thất bại hoàn toàn (đáng thất vọng); hoặc (nghĩa khác là) hình phạt nghiêm khắc đối với hành động/cư xử ngu ngốc.

Ví dụ
Reactions to the Liberal win in Alberta were glum (buồn bã), with local media opining that the oil industry had “a lot on the line,” and calling the result a “kick in the shins” for the province (tỉnh).

The Black Shark 2 was only just released (trình làng) in March, so this is something a kick in the shins of those who bought it. The Black Shark 2 Pro isn't really a big upgrade, truth be told, but it does bring a few improvements (cải tiến).

Even the Liberal’s new plan to fund green solutions from the operations of the Trans Mountain Pipeline feels like a kick in the shins.

"Not know which way to look" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng làm cô ấy ngại. Photo by Larm Rmah

"Not know which way to look" = Không biết nhìn hướng nào -> Không biết cách ứng xử hoặc phản ứng như thế nào khi đang trong tình huống khó xử hoặc ngại ngùng.

Ví dụ
She doesn't know which way to look: The embarrassed starlet (ngôi sao nhỏ, diễn viên đang lên) seemed in a hurry. All smiles: The reality of her epic tanning fail had clearly not yet filtered through as she posed on the red carpet.

If ever an issue was designed to drive a wedge between (chia rẽ) the Great British public (washed and unwashed), this is it. Parents are rebelling and staff don't know which way to look, but a certain headteacher in Darlington is standing her ground. "Get dressed for school," she says, and she's not talking to her pupils.

"The community is saying that Dr. Patton was being used to do somebody else's dirty work," Lucas-Burke said. "I don't know which way to look, and it makes me nervous because I'm probably dealing with some of these same people. … I've had an upset stomach for the past week trying to digest (tiêu hóa, nuốt) all of this and not having any answers. People are calling me and saying, 'What the hell is going on?' I don't know what to tell them."

"My future looks bright" nghĩa là gì?

Đời đẹp như hoa. Photo by Rodion Kutsaev

"(One's) future looks bright" = Tương lai trông có vẻ sáng sủa -> Ý là sau này mình có tương lai tốt đẹp, thành công và đầy triển vọng.

Ví dụ
Emy Flor likes to say one thing to people who ask for her help in borrowing money so they can purchase a home. “Not everyone needs to buy a home to prove that you have a direction in life or that your future looks bright,” Flor told the Georgia Straight in a phone interview.

They want to impress me, take their own confidence and say ‘Oh yeah, I was in camp with Whyte and I did alright against him, my future looks bright’. They’re bringing it to me hard, no question. They’re making me alert and breathing new life into me, forcing me to work harder but train smarter, too. It’s hard but a good kind of hard – these guys don’t play no games!

Emilia Clarke played the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen for eight glorious seasons on Game of Thrones. Many people can’t imagine her in any other role and will always know her as Khaleesi. Clarke is a household name now and her future looks bright. In a recent interview, she revealed what she learned from playing the very formidable (ghê gớm, kinh khủng) and strong Daenerys Targaryen.

"Not in Kansas anymore" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: madeleine ragsdale on Unsplash

"Not in Kansas anymore" = không còn ở Kansas nữa đâu -> nghĩa là ở trong môi trường hoàn toàn xa lạ, không thoải mái.

Ví dụ
We're definitely not in Kansas anymore, as the halls (sảnh) of the Las Vegas Convention Center pulsed with all stripes of futuristic (tương lai) tech.

You’re not in Kansas anymore, so please, make an effort. Most clubs ask that you come dressed smart casual, or upscale chic. That means NO JEANS or rips (quần rách), leave your sandals and flip flops at home and don’t wear hats or excessive jewellery (trang sức). Goes without saying, but wife-beater shirts on men will not be welcomed.

“We're not in Kansas anymore Toto!!” the Crescent City CHP office stated on social media. “Do not underestimate (coi thường) the power of this storm!

"Stare in the face" nghĩa là gì?

Mẹ ơi, ai kia ak? Photo by  Zach Vessels

"Stare (someone or something) in the face" = Nhìn thẳng/trực tiếp vào mặt ai mà không chớp mắt; đương đầu hoặc đối mặt với một vấn đề một cách trực tiếp.

Ví dụ
As the Proteas stare a massive defeat in the face, their coach takes responsibility and says his skipper isn’t retiring anytime soon.

If they lived amongst constituents, experienced more or less the same services day in day out, had the poor state of infrastructure (cơ sở hạ tầng) stare them in the face every day, would they require to be roused (khích động) into action by protests?

But any time I wear a smartwatch, I feel completely trapped. It's easy enough for me to just ignore my phone when it buzzes in my pocket and check back later, but when the notification is staring me in the face from right on my wrist (cổ tay), it's harder to ignore. It's right there. And on especially busy days where I'm constantly getting notifications from emails, texts, social media, and so on (usually during trade shows like CES), I catch myself staring at my wrist more than I ever stare at my phone.

"Steal a look" nghĩa là gì?

"Steal a look (at someone or something)" = Trộm ánh mắt -> Nhìn ai/cái gì một cách nhanh chóng, dè dặt và lén lút.

Ví dụ
With extravagant gowns (áo dài quá cao) (looking at you, JLo!) and sleek, sharp suits, these couples know how to steal a look or two when it comes to dressing up. Whether they’re at a red carpet event, an awards ceremony or an after party, these Latinx celebrity couples (các cặp đôi người nổi tiếng) sure know how to be the best-dressed in every occasion.

Imagine this–you just dropped the top back, you’re driving through the city and you quickly steal a look at your sweetheart in the passenger seat. Crystallized sun-droplets dance across your faces, while the sweet Los Angeles air billows against your two-piece silk garb (quần áo, cách ăn mặc). You just pulled up to the cookout, and are greeted by the sublime (tuyệt vời) scent of barbecue, and Arin Ray’s Phases II reverberating (vang dội, lẫy lừng) from the backyard speakers.

If true, there are some interesting implications for Hygiea itself. The asteroid (hành tinh nhỏ) would have a notably different composition than Vesta or Ceres and might resemble a rubble pile covered with a layer of regolith (tầng phong hóa) rather than a true asteroid. It’s not clear if these findings will persuade NASA to devote more resources to puzzling out this mystery; a dwarf planet (hành tinh người lùn) designation would definitely be a bump for Hygiea’s overall profile. NASA has an upcoming mission to 15 Psyche planned, so it’s possible that we might be able to steal a look at Hygiea depending on their respective orbital positions (vị trí quỹ đạo) when the Psyche mission deploys.

"Take a long hard look at" nghĩa là gì?

Test ly cafe đầu tay. Photo by  Battlecreek Coffee Roasters

"Take a long hard look at" = Kiểm tra/xem/suy nghĩ thật kỹ, thật lâu và cẩn thận.

Ví dụ
I seriously think #ThisMorning needs to take a long hard look at yourselves!! Samantha Markle slagging off her sister today for your ratings!

It makes no difference, though. Even if they win on Sunday, it doesn't detract (lấy đi, gièm pha) from the fact that United are such a distance off, they need to take a long, hard look at what's going on at that club.

Under former general manager John Dorsey, while several splashy moves were made to improve the Browns, the hijacking (vụ không tặc) of the teams future in terms of draft picks and depth were an expense too great. As Stefanski comes in and looks to right the ship, you can fully expect him to take a long hard look at every option, whether that be moving on from players currently on the roster, or acquiring players he's familiar with.

"Take one look at" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by  Markus Spiske

"Take one look at (someone or something)" = Kiểm tra kỹ lưỡng ai/cái gì một cách nhanh chóng và như thám tử/phong cách kỵ sĩ.

Ví dụ
As early as the 1770s, Abigail Adams was urging her husband to “remember the ladies.” Take one look at the Constitution, and it’s pretty easy to see he did not. A century later, in 1872, Victoria Woodhull ran for president of the United States. Did you know that? Probably not, because our culture still struggles to remember the ladies.

All you have to do is take one look at the Galaxy Fold to know that, as a consumer product, foldables (có thể gấp lại) aren't quite there yet. We've seen plenty of concepts from companies like TCL, too, but even those are far off from being in our hands. The good news is we know that a handful of foldables will come out in 2020 and some of them look pretty neat.

You would like to think that even if the president of the United States decided to go through with a back-channel inquiry (sự điều tra, thẩm vấn) to the Ukrainian government to see if he could get them to investigate the Bidens, he would take one look at Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman and say, “Whoa, whoa, whoa. These guys look like the most oafish henchmen (tay sai/người hậu cần ngu ngốc, đần độn) since Jeff Gillooly and Shawn Eckardt went after Nancy Kerrigan. You wouldn’t trust these guys to pick up a take-out lunch order, much less use them to execute a secret and politically sensitive request of a foreign government.”

"Things are looking up" nghĩa là gì?

Coffee time. Photo by  Jason Blackeye

"Things are looking up" = Mọi điều đang trở nên khả thi, đang cải thiện và có thêm hy vọng.

Ví dụ
But things are looking up. In 2018, 1,183 US companies in business for at least two years and with at least 10 employees installed new CEOs, according to the annual Women CEO Report. Of those, 264, or 22.3 percent, were women, up from 18 percent in 2017.

Already, things are looking up. In the southern most town of Kawthaung, which borders Thailand, there are plans to open an international airport, which would improve air connectivity to the region. Memories Group, one of the most established high-end tourism companies in Myanmar, backs this plan. Its CEO Cyrus Pun has set his sights on the Mergui Archipelago.

Those that have been following Arrow over the last two seasons know that Mia Smoak (Katherine McNamara) has lived a tough life full of hardship. She never knew her father, was estranged (bị xa lánh, ly thân) from her mother and was separated from her brother at birth. However, now that "Crisis on Infinite Earths" has restarted the Arrowverse, things are looking up for Blackstar.

"You look a little peaked" nghĩa là gì?

Back to the past. Photo by The New York Public Library

"You look a little peaked" = Trông bạn hơi héo hon, tiều tụy.

Ví dụ
'It was such a sweet shift in our relationships because originally, it was all pranks and teasing each other. And here I am pregnant (có thai), so it’s like pulling out my chair and just making sure I have enough water and, "Are you feeling okay? You look a little peaked." "I’m fine.”'

The sponsor of the legislation, Kathy Tran, was asked if her bill could permit a woman to receive an abortion (phá thai) even during labor, provided a doctor would certify her mental health was “impaired (suy yếu, khiếm khuyết).” The answer was “yes.” Furthermore, Ms. Tran’s bill proposed to lower the number of certifying doctors from three to one and the standard from “substantially and irredeemably (tuyệt vọng, không thể cứu vãn) impair” to “impair.” Call it the “you look a little peaked to me” standard.

My name is Kate, and I'm a germaphobe. I won't shake your hand if you look a little peaked, and I'll discreetly move away if you cough on the subway. I'm an expert at elbowing open a swinging door, as well as knuckling my way through an ATM transaction. The arrival of my daughter four years ago seems to have shifted my functional phobia (ám ảnh, sợ hãi) into overdrive. One afternoon, as I sanitized (làm vệ sinh, sát trùng) every page of a children's board book from the library, I began to worry that I'd crossed a line.
