Yes, yes, I know she is only running the interviewing process, but that is how Dick Cheney ended up as vice President. Here is one excerpt from my Bloomberg column:

You might argue that Ivanka is not qualified to run the World Bank, and I might agree with you. (She would not be my personal pick; how about Carly Fiorina, Kristin J. Forbes or Arthur Brooks?) Yet consider that the previous president, Jim Yong Kim, was highly qualified on paper. He co-founded a famous foreign-aid public health group, has a Ph.D. in anthropology (nhân loại học), was a professor at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health and then president of Dartmouth. As an Asian-American, he had the potential to be a powerful symbol of multicultural governance.

Yet by most accounts his tenure at the bank was a failure (thất bại). He alienated (gây xa lánh) much of the staff, and his organizational changes (after first creating chaos (hỗn loạn) and bad morale (tinh thần xuống)) were largely reversed.

Now he is leaving suddenly, years before his term is up, allowing Trump to appoint his replacement. Not only that, Kim is moving to a for-profit infrastructure firm (công ty xây dựng vì lợi nhuận), hardly the best symbolism for the leader of an institution that is supposed to be about helping the global poor.

The sad reality is this: If Ivanka took over the reins of the bank, she probably would be an improvement.

And she might not even use the word "and" so much.

China đã thua chiến tranh thương mại

Exports to the U.S. fell 3.7%, the first nonseasonal decline since October 2016. That would indicate an end to the pre-tariff purchasing rush by U.S. companies in the third quarter and into the fourth. Exports to the U.S. had previously climbed over 12% for three consecutive months.

"The Chinese trade numbers released today got all the alarm bells ringing," says Naeem Aslam, chief market strategist for Think Markets in London and a Forbes contributor. "If you need any evidence how the trade spat (vụ cãi nhau vặt, vụ cãi nhau không quan trọng, vụ cãi nhau nhỏ) is impacting  (ảnh hưởng, tác động) a country's economic health then look no further than China trade. The lower export number means lower jobs, which means another direct impact on the (Chinese) economy. Donald Trump can be pleased. His policies have brought China to its knees (quỳ dưới  chân)."

A meal naturally brings people together, but does the way a meal is served and consumed further matter for cooperation between people? This research (n = 1476) yielded evidence that it does. People eating from shared plates (i.e., Chinese style meal) cooperated (hợp tác) more in social dilemmas (vấn đề xã hội) and negotiations (thương lượng) than those eating from separate plates. Specifically, sharing food from a single plate increased perceived coordination among diners, which in turn led them to behave more cooperatively and less competitively (ít cạnh tranh/bất đồng) toward each other compared with individuals eating the same food from separate plates. The effect of sharing a plate on cooperation occurred among strangers, which suggests that sharing plates can bring together not only allies, but strangers as well.

In a nation where people lead ever more busy lives and increasingly view their dogs as family members, professional dog walking is flourishing. And along with it is what might be viewed as the unusual art of dog walker communication. Many of today's walkers do not simply stroll — not if they want to be rehired, anyway. Over text and email, they craft fine-grained, delightful narratives tracing the journey from arrival at the residence to drop-off. They report the number of bathroom stops. They take artistic photos, and lots of them.

"For an hour-long walk, I send six or eight, depending," said Griffin, 44, who holds a treat in her hand when shooting to ensure her charge is looking at the camera. "Then I give a full report that includes not only peeing and pooping but also kind of general well-being, and if the dog socialized with other dogs."

After walking a dog named Stevie Nicks earlier this year, Griffin's blow-by-blow mentioned that the dog had collected a chicken bone from under a bush, then "crunched down on it and broke into 3 pieces." At the end of another walk, Griffin related that she "picked the foxtails out of her little beard and mustache," and explained precisely where the foxtails had come from — "the fence around the yard at the corner."

Dog walkers' notes are often more exhaustive than those parents get from the caregivers of their human children.

The article is interesting throughout:

"Ongoing, two-way communication is actually one of the most important components to a successful walk," White said. "What we've heard from owners is the more details, the better. You can't have too many details."…

"All of our dog walkers have been really good communicators, but Perry wins the prize," said Tucci, a nonprofit executive. His texts "are really are more logistical and poop-oriented than anything else. But they're always so enthusiastic."

Những khó khăn trong các chuỗi cung ứng ở châu Phi

Supply chain (chuỗi cung ứng) problems (vấn đề) in Africa are quite complex (phức tạp), with most of them stemming from (bắt nguồn từ) the sheer size of the continent (lục địa). Africa’s land mass is greater than the USA, Europe, and China combined. Within this huge space there are 54 unique markets, few of which provide scale or adequate distribution infrastructure (cơ sở hạ tầng phân phối). Further complicating matters (làm phức tạp thêm tình hình), there are over 2,000 languages spoken and very diverse cultural (văn hóa đa dạng) dynamics from one market to the next.

Facebook, the online social network, has more than 2 billion global users. Because those users do not pay for the service, its benefits are hard to measure. We report the results of a series of three non-hypothetical auction experiments where winners are paid to deactivate their Facebook accounts for up to one year. Though the populations sampled and the auction design differ across the experiments, we consistently find the average Facebook user would require more than $1000 to deactivate their account for one year. While the measurable impact Facebook and other free online services have on the economy may be small, our results show that the benefits these services provide for their users are large.

Tương lai giáo dục đại học ở đâu?

In my fantasy (hình ảnh tưởng tượng), the [Western] schools that are open to expanding (mở rộng) their India operations (hoạt động ở ấn độ) will rise considerably in reputation (gia tăng đáng kể về danh tiếng). India, and South Asia more generally, is in the midst of a phenomenal explosion (bùng nổ mang tính hiện tượng) of talent (tài năng) in diverse fields (nhiều/đa dạng các lĩnh vực/môn học)…

You might wonder whether India actually needs all of these foreign branches (chi nhánh đại học nước ngoài), when it has some superb schools of its own, for instance the various Indian Institutes of Technology. In my fantasy, some Indian institutions of higher education will improve and force some competitors — shall we say UC Berkeley? — to leave the country. Yet many talented Indians will find attending a branch of Harvard or Yale to be an appealing option (lựa chọn hấp dẫn). Furthermore, the top foreign schools may form alliances (hình thành liên minh/liên kết) with Indian institutions (as Yale has done in Singapore), giving students the best of both worlds.

This future gets better yet. Over time, the population of Indian alumni of prestigious (danh tiếng, uy tín) U.S. universities will increase, relative to those who studied and graduated in America. America’s top schools thus will become engines of opportunity. It might also become obvious that the students attending in the U.S. are underperforming their Indian counterparts. What better way to light a competitive fire under the current dominant institutions?

And maybe some of the keenest (sắc sảo; sắc, bén, tinh, thính) and most ambitious (tham vọng) American students will prefer to study in India rather than in America. (Perhaps a “canceled” American student could be sent to Brown Uttar Pradesh?) Wouldn’t you want to study with the very best of your peers, knowing you might be sitting next to the next generation’s Einstein, von Neumann or, of course Ramanujan?

"Could sell ice to Eskimos" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Martin Robles on Unsplash

"Could sell ice to Eskimos" = bán được cả đá cho người Eskimo -> nghĩa là người bán hàng khéo léo, thuyết phục đến mức bán được cả hàng cho người không dùng đến nó; "bán lược cho sư".

Ví dụ
The sales gene is what makes for that, “natural-born salesperson (người bán hàng)” comment you hear every once in a while, the “He could sell ice to Eskimos” thing.

Say what you will about Kim Kardashian West, but there’s no denying (từ chối) she could sell ice to Eskimos.

The man could “sell ice to eskimos”, as he might say. Mr. Trammell was an avid (khao khát) sports fan, and enjoyed watching the Georgia Bulldogs, the Atlanta Braves, and most of all, the Mary Persons Bulldogs high school football team.

"Ice the kicker" -> nghĩa là chiến thuật trong bóng bầu dục Mỹ, thổi còi hết giờ ngay trước khi cầu thủ đối phương sắp ghi bàn, khiến anh ta hụt chí hoặc mất tập trung, gần như chỉ thực hiện ở cuối trận khi mục tiêu là thắng hoặc hòa.

Ví dụ
If you watch enough NFL games, you’ll see how coaches (huấn luyện viên) will ice the kicker. They’ll be in a close game situation with little time on the clock. The time may even run out on a winning extra point or field goal. Basically, the opponent is looking to get the win late and give no chance for the other team.

McManus explained that he, long-snapper Casey Kreiter and holder Colby Wadman have worked all season on going through with kicks when whistles are blown at the last split-second like Sunday so the ice-the-kicker strategy (chiến thuật) actually allows him to see what the conditions are like.

After Seattle burned a timeout to “ice” the kicker, McLaughlin’s ensuing 47-yard attempt sliced wide left, giving Seattle renewed life once again.

"Lead (someone) to the altar" nghĩa là cưới ai.

Ví dụ
Was she different from how we saw her? “Completely,” he says. “Very down to earth, and very very funny. A hoot.” What made him laugh most? “When she did her Gracie Fields impression in her dressing gown, haha! She’d stand there with a mug of tea and a piece of toast on top, ‘Here y’are Paul,’ and she’d start ‘Walter, Walter, lead me to the altar’.

Despite all the odds (sự khác nhau), my husband managed to lead me to the altar, with both our families participating equally in the wedding. There were times when we got weak in the face of all the difficulties surrounding us. But the one aspect that remained constant in all this was our resilience. Whenever one of us went weak, the other stayed rock-solid, and was a strong support.

When I was 18, I bumped into a man on my way home. We got chatting and he asked me out. Wes was smart, funny and kind. It was like we'd known each other for years. He could sense I was troubled and told me I didn't have to go home if I didn't want to. "I want to marry you," he told me earnestly. Perhaps another person would've been wary, but this was the first time in years that anyone had shown me warmth. So, I agreed. He helped me tell my mum and Bennie. We planned the wedding for three weeks' time. But I wasn't rid of Bennie yet. He insisted on walking me down the aisle. It was the last thing I wanted, but I knew I didn't have a say in the matter. Weeks later, I felt sick as my rapist lead me to the altar. But soon, I was a married woman and able to distance myself from Bennie. After a while, my family and I drifted apart.

"Be sacrificed on the altar of (something)" nghĩa là bị bỏ rơi để đổi lấy điều mà được cho rằng thấp kém hơn.

Ví dụ
“We believe that our nation is most secure when the president and the administration prioritize readiness, recruitment, and retention rather than using the military to advance a social or political agenda. Military readiness should not be sacrificed on the altar of political correctness.”

There have, however, been enough signals from governments and other organisations to suggest the need to address climate change is not being forgotten. There are instead hopes that the global fragility exposed by the pandemic could mean a world in which concerns about climate change hold more sway not less and that CO2 reduction strategies will not be sacrificed on the altar of economic necessity.

Green is always full of brilliant surprises, so viewers probably weren’t ready to see George die in the second episode, but Vance knew this was coming. “I knew I would be saying goodbye in the second episode. It was one of those scriptural (dựa trên kinh thánh), structural things that somebody’s death propels the series and someone has to be sacrificed on the altar of structure, and that was me. But this is a monster movie, and no telling what can happen [laughs]. So, I’ll just leave it there. It was disappointing but what an episode, what a ride,” he said about his character’s death.

"Cupboard is bare" nghĩa là gì?

Đau đầu vì tiền. Photo by Travis Essinger on Unsplash

"Cupboard is bare" = tủ để trống -> nghĩa là trong nhà không có đồ ăn hoặc ít thức ăn, hoặc eo hẹp tài nguyên, tiền bạc.

Ví dụ
They want to be controlled because they are terrified of examining their lives and finding that the cupboard is bare.

There are several scenarios (viễn cảnh) in which a decent business with decent earning scan discover the money cupboard is bare.

'We have no money, the cupboard is bare,' he said in an interview in the Mail on 5 November. 'We can't afford to buy unless we get some money from somewhere, unless a fairy godmother (bà tiên đỡ đầu) appears.'

The cupboard was bare. Two months after we buried Mom, I married a young girl I hardly knew. We both quickly realized our mistake. I could cope with my own demons (con quỷ), but I was totally unprepared to share them with another person.

Đuổi thì kiếm việc mới. Photo by Ketut Subiyanto from Pexels

"Get/be kicked to the curb" hoặc "kick (someone or something) to the curb" = đá vào lề đường -> nghĩa là sa thải, từ bỏ hoặc loại bỏ.

Ví dụ
Afraid of being kicked to the curb, he just hung up the receiver and went to sleep crying.

"It looks like I've been kicked to the curb." I said trying to regain her attention.
She looked up and then down again into her file. "Yeah, but don't feel too bad, whenever Jacob comes around I get kicked to the curb too. It's nothing personal."

I would urge anyone reading this book to develop a plan as well, as there is a very high probability that you will ultimately be kicked to the curb. Once the day arrives, have it planned out down to the time you are getting up in the morning to the calls you are going to make.

Don't be afraid to fall when you miss the curb or even get kicked to the curb. Sometimes our own experience will put fear and doubt in us and may make us want to fall or fail, but we are part of something bigger and we must rise and get back up from our fall, turn our failure into a successful attitude comeback and do something everyone thought we were able to do.

"Walk out on you" nghĩa là gì?

"Walk out on somebody" nghĩa là rời bỏ và chấm dứt mối quan hệ một cách phũ phàng với ai đó.

Ví dụ
Seeing your GM walk out on you just before playing an important post-season series against a team that was seeded five places ahead of you, is bound to have made some players raise questions, or even make them feel somewhat despondent.

Somebody is either going to tell you, or she will get tired of you and walk out on you. I suggest, however, that you try your best and save as much as you can because you are going to need money to support yourself. This is just in case your wife walks out on you.

Because while Brady didn't walk out on you (he simply signed with one of the two teams interested in him), Gronk sure as hell did, and now they're set to have a time that falls more in line with Johnson's thinking than Belichick's. And if it works? Hoo baby. If the freaking Bucs go on and win a title while doing root beer floats during games? It would be against everything Patriots fans have shoved in everyone else's faces. "We're smarter and work harder than everyone else" is an energy that has propelled (đẩy) Patriots fans for 20 years now.

"Don't kill/shoot the messenger" = đừng giết người đưa tin -> nghĩa là đừng giận cá chém thớt, đừng đổ lỗi lên người đưa ra thông tin (thường là tin xấu).

Ví dụ
If the media is reporting what is happening it is not the fault of the media. Don't kill the messenger.

Look, don't kill the messenger, but here's what it is. There's a guy, a Saudi prince, and he wants to give you backing if you're still looking to do this Brenda Starr movie.

They are quoting the president’s chief of staff (tham mưu trưởng). They are covering the news, reporting on what the administration says. That’s the job of a free press. Don’t kill the messenger.

As true as that maybe, I have a feeling that a wave of police reform (cải cách) is coming and training practices in hostile (thù địch) situations will likely be the first thing to be addressed. Don’t kill the messenger.

"Make eyes at somebody" nghĩa là tán tỉnh (bằng mắt); liếc mắt đưa tình.

Ví dụ
Let's set the scene. You are having a romantic night in with your partner. You've just finished watching a movie after eating a delicious meal. Then your partner starts to make eyes at you. You realise what's up, so you say the words that you know your loved one has been waiting to hear: Let's sweep the special chimney.

The report detailing the arrests was heavily redacted, but residents say seeing prostitutes (gái điếm) in this area is nothing new. “They just be looking at you, smiling at you, you can tell that’s how they try to make eyes at you,” said Timothy Higgins of Ft. If you let an Italian man come onto you, you will soon feel like you are the only woman in the world. He will take you for romantic walks, make eyes at you all evening, call you pet names within minutes of meeting you, and sometimes, he'll profess his love to you before you even know his last name. He will buy you flowers, take you for a candlelit dinner and then for a moonlit walk around the piazza. He'll insist that he never truly experienced life until he met you. You won't believe a word of it, but he will (at least for the evening). Italian men are intoxicating.

Ví dụ
It is said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. However, considering inflation (lạm phát) and the cost-of-living (sinh hoạt phí) index, what is an ounce of prevention really worth today?

The conventional wisdom in health care is that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure: preventing illness or injury not only avoids pain and suffering, it is also cheaper than treating those ill or hurt.

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” In healthcare, this well-known proverb has many implications (hàm ý). For several of the most common cancers, the identification of individuals who have early-stage disease enables early and more effective treatment.

We have all heard the old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. When it comes to data management, that pound of cure may not be available, so the new adage might be that an ounce of prevention is worth preventing the total destruction of your business. The ounce of prevention is information governance (quản lý thông tin), and-if you are like most people-you have no idea what that is or how to take advantage of it.

"Kill or cure" = chết hoặc cứu -> nghĩa là nói về tính huống chỉ có thể có một trong hai chết quả: rất tiêu cực (kill) hoặc rất tích cực (cure).

Ví dụ
I had more style than that on kill or cure, but no luckily I have some good staff.

First time trying it mate, between the football and the boxing then UFC I was ruined so I thought fuck it, it will either kill me or cure me...think the red K should have told me it would kill me lol it's not nice, il finish it but not enjoyably.

A: "Do you think if a bloke (gã) (any bloke even) could create a new Twit-ID under a female guise (vỏ bọc) and go undetected as such? Do you think their mansplaining (dạy đời phụ nữ) tendencies would betray their true nature? I will not be attempting this of course."
B: "I don't know. It might be a bit of a kill or cure situation."

Tommy: "My local Pizza place makes one that’s got the perfect variety of meats cheeses and peppers. However, three or four pieces of that would be my calories for the entire day. Not to mention the carbs."
Kate: "Yup. I'm having a day off from being sensible. I've had a bad stomach for the past few days so this is kill or cure."

"What can't be cured must be endured" nghĩa là gì?

Nóng thì bật quạt, lạnh thì đắp chăn, đừng mong biến hạ thành đông. :D Photo by Emily Hopper from Pexels

"What can't be cured must be endured" = không chữa được thì phải chịu -> nghĩa là chúng ta phải học cách sống chung với lũ, chấp nhận với những điều không thể thay đổi được.

Ví dụ
There's no summer without winter. What can't be cured must be endured. We must work in the heat or starve (chết đói) in the cold. Nobody is born smart. Do your best and leave the rest.

Well, as Pa says, “What can't be cured must be endured,” and when my cold is better I'll come over to the Dovecote to see what we can do with the clothes you already have for the season.

It's no part of the business of the superior classes to interfere with the laws of supply and demand (cung cầu); poor people must be miserable (chịu khổ). What can't be cured must be endured.

Mr Willet takes it all very philosophically (triết lý) and quotes irritatingly (khó chịu) 'that what can't be cured must be endured'. The wind had been in the north-east, and I was in a more militant mood. If I have complained once about the skylight, during my term of office, I must have complained twenty times.

"To crown it all" = lại thêm nữa là -> nghĩa là thông tin sắp tới còn tệ hơn cả đống tin xấu vừa nhắc tới.

Ví dụ
On the other hand, the backlash (giật lùi) of ill and unbalanced distribution (phân phối) of food and social benefits or any form of incentive is disturbing. To crown it all, there is no gauging (đo đạc) tool to measure the psychological damage that has been caused and mental pressure that we have been engulfed with. In a nutshell, the adverse effect from Covid -19 is painfully huge.

“I’m spiritual (tâm hồn), not religious but at the same time I’m an Omnist.. I’m hungry for ancient knowledge so I’m still searching for the truth”, he noted, the fast rising artist who won the award for best African Act, Bali Island. He is a prolific basketball player and to crown it all He’s a Karate Black belter (đai), Armed and unarmed combat instructor.

A shock such as the insolvency (không trả được nợ) of a supplier spreads vertically (theo chiều dọc) and then horizontally (theo chiều ngang) as it destabilizes competitors. To crown it all, supply chains are all the more fragile as they depend on the good health of the financial system that provides the credit lines necessary to any economic activity.
