"So's your old man" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Mehmet Turgut Kirkgoz on Unsplash

"So's your old man" = thằng cha/ông bô mày cũng thế -> nghĩa là câu đáp hờn dỗi, nhỏ mọn khi bị xúc phạm, ý nói 'mày cũng thế'.

Ví dụ
"Could I have my apple pie á la mode?" "Oh, fiddlesticks (vớ vẩn)!" "I never joke. I always tell the truth." "So's your old man!" "Now let me say just one more thing, and then I'll shut up about this."

As the alleged (khẳng định không có chứng minh) sexual adventures of Donald Trump and Roy Moore gained attention in 2016 and 2017, renewed attention to Bill’s admitted and alleged behavior toward women popped up among liberals reconsidering the impeachment saga of the late 1990s and conservatives playing “so’s your old man.”

Ford, who acknowledged (nhận biết) the situation was not swell (tốt), begged the board (ủy ban) for mercy and denied his client was saying "so's your old man" to the detectives when he re-opened last week with just billiards on offer even though the detectives had told him to close altogether last month.

"Get in sync" nghĩa là gì?

Đồng đội mới cần chút thời gian để bắt nhịp với team chứ Photo by fauxels from Pexels

"Get in sync with someone or something" nghĩa là đồng bộ, đồng thời; cùng chung quan điểm, mục tiêu, ý kiến... với ai.

Ví dụ
“I played in more minutes in the G League, so I had more chances to get in sync with my teammates. While our guards players drove in, I found space to make shots,” he said of his 3-point shooting.

“She sees the court fairly well. I’m looking forward to seeing her growth. Ashley Monroe was our setter last year, and you can see the link that Rylee and Ashley have. But Gabby was away a good part of the summer and is working double-time to get in sync with Rylee.

“The first few days of school are always a little awkward (lúng túng) and challenging because we are setting expectations (kỳ vọng, mong đợi) for a new school year,” Stephen Hall from Springfield Public Schools says. “And this year, in particular, we are setting up expectations for a new way of learning. And if that’s a new opportunity for a staff person or a student, that can take a few days to get in sync and figure things out.”

"The old switcheroo" nghĩa là gì?

Đổi lái thôi!!! Photo by: Alexander Hough on Unsplash

"The old switcheroo" -> nghĩa là thay đổi/biến đổi bất ngờ/không ngờ tới, có tính chất lừa đảo.

Ví dụ
The old switcheroo didn’t fool an OPP officer who ended up charging (kết án) a driver July 18 for operating a vehicle while impaired (sức khỏe yếu, ở đây là say rượu).

Did you say the Washington Redskins? Wrong. I was talking about the New York Giants (If you said the Giants, then I was talking about the Redskins. That’s what we call the old switcheroo).

The Old Switcheroo – When an old rival turns up selling antiquities (đồ cổ), Frankie’s convinced it’s all a scam (mưu đồ xấu). She’s also believes a break-in at the museum is connected. Can the team prove it before she takes the money and runs?

"Rake over old coals" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: T. Q. on Unsplash

"Rake over old coals" = cào xới đống than cũ -> nghĩa là nhắc lại/gợi lại chuyện cũ đã qua, thường là những chuyện không vui.

Ví dụ
This isn't the time to rake over old coals, but I can't resist (từ chối) a dig at the Scottish Labour hierarchy (hệ thống cấp bậc) who championed devolution as the best way of finishing off the SNP.

This is not to rake over old coals, but simply to say that in the period (giai đoạn) 1995-2019 we could have done so much more, if only national economic growth and the prosperity of the people – and not a political calculus – had been the central driver of our governance actions.

I don’t want to rake over old coals but that regime (chế độ) had a different way of doing things and created a different  atmosphere.

One way to avoid combat (tránh không phải đánh trận)  was to be selected for training as an army doctor (bác sĩ quân y). Kissinger applied (đăng ký), not because he had much interest in medicine, but because he had even less interest in being a combat infantryman (lính bộ binh). By then, Kissinger knew how to blitz the standardized tests so valued by the army. He easily did well enough to be chosen as one of the twenty-five finalists at Lafayette for medical school.

Among the other finalists was Leonard Weiss, known as Larry. He and Kissinger used to hitchhike to New York on weekends and double-date. Once, Weiss and his girlfriend went with Kissinger and Ann Fleischer to see The Marriage of Figaro at the Metropolitan Opera. The two soldiers were at the top of the program at Lafayette, but Weiss considered Kissinger to be the smarter.

"Turn the other cheek" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Brandi Redd on Unsplash

My feelings don't get hurt when it is said because I just turn the other cheek.

There was this mantra (thần chú) that somehow as China became richer, as we turned a blind eye to Chinese malign (độc ác) activity with they stealing our IP or engaging in unfair trade practices or bullying its neighbours, bullying its own people at Tiananmen Square, if we would turn the other cheek, turn a blind eye that China would become richer. As it became richer and the middle class in China grew, they''d become more like us,

To kick off the start of spring, we wanted to remind all Sunshine Coast revellers (người tham dự) to enjoy your night out as the weather warms, but be respectful, be kind, turn the other cheek, and be sure to go home to your families and loved ones in one piece (lành lặn).

"Get out of sync" nghĩa là gì?

Hòa chung không khí chống dịch Photo by Yaroslav Danylchenko from Pexels

"Get out of sync (with someone or something)" có 'sync' là đồng bộ hóa -> cụm từ này nghĩa là dừng hoạt động hoặc di chuyển cùng lúc, cùng tốc độ (với ai hay cái gì); không đồng bộ.

Ví dụ
What we sometimes forget is that our feelings don't always tell the entire (toàn bộ) truth. Sometimes our emotions (cảm xúc) get out of sync with reality.

I've come across two potential drawbacks (hạn chế). If you do use Google's Messages app, any archived (lưu trữ) conversations still show up in the Your Phone app as an active conversation. And, randomly, my phone and PC will get out of sync, causing messages not to show up on my computer.

There’s a lack of understanding that breathing more actually increases oxygen levels. That’s completely false (sai). Less oxygen actually gets into your system, and when you breathe more, you lose control. If you are breathing more, you actually get out of breath, and you get out of sync with your breathing, and you have to stop and have to recover, or else you get into this panic (hoảng loạn) stage quite often.

thủ tướng đức merkel chịu sức ép phải dừng đường ống khí đốt North Stream 2 hợp tác với Nga sau vụ chính trị gia đối lập Navalny bị đầu độc,
-----
Angela Merkel is under growing domestic pressure (sức ép trong nước ngày càng tăng) to end her support for the joint German-Russian Nord Stream 2 pipeline project (dự án đường ống dẫn khí) over the confirmed poisoning of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

The German Green party called on the chancellor (thủ tướng) to use the nearly completed infrastructure project to press the Kremlin into answering allegations (cáo buộc, kết tội) over what Merkel called the “silencing” (im lặng) of Navalny with a novichok nerve agent (chất độc thần kinh).

“This openly attempted murder (ám sát, giết hại) through the Kremlin’s mafia-like structures should not just worry us but needs to have real consequences,” said Katrin Göring-Eckardt, the co-chair of the Greens in the Bundestag.

“Nord Stream 2 is no longer something we can jointly pursue with Russia,” said the politician for the ecological party, currently second in polls to Merkel’s CDU and a likely contender for the next coalition government (chính phủ liên minh).

Trump says that American soldiers killed in WWII were losers (kẻ thất bại) and suckers (gã khờ, kẻ dễ bị lừa):

When President Donald Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery (nghĩa trang) near Paris in 2018, he blamed rain for the last-minute decision, saying that “the helicopter couldn’t fly” and that the Secret Service wouldn’t drive him there. Neither claim was true.

Trump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled (tóc rối bời, xõa ra) in the rain, and because he did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 marines (thủy quân lục chiến, lính thủy đánh bộ) who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed.

No surprise there; recall what he said about John McCain’s service.

thu nhập bình quân một hộ gia đình nông dân ở Mỹ đã tăng 24% từ năm 2018 (lên tới gần 90k usd), gấp rưỡi thu nhập bình quân của toàn nước Mỹ.

-----
I did a recent post discussing Trump’s payroll tax cut (not authorized by Congress), which begins two months before the election. Yesterday, the CDC said we should prepare for a vaccine rollout two days before the election. (Perhaps justified, but the timing is suspicious (đáng nghi).) Meanwhile Trump is splashing money (vung tiền) on farmers who don’t need it:

Farmers in the US are in line for record handouts (trợ cấp kỷ lục) from Washington this year, sparking (gợi lên, làm nhen nhóm lên, lóe lên) accusations (buộc tội, kết án) that Donald Trump is trying to buy the agricultural vote ahead of the November election. . . .

The surge (sự tăng mạnh) in government support for farmers comes as Mr Trump’s presidential campaign attempts to pull off a string of victories in November in farm states such as Iowa, Ohio and Wisconsin, which helped propel him to the White House in 2016.

Neil Hamilton, a professor specialising in agricultural law at Drake University in Iowa, said: “It’s an amazingly egregious (quá xá, đại, chí) example of vote-buying.” . . .

Median income for farm households has increased by 24 per cent since 2018 to $89,674, reversing a trend of declining income, “largely because of increases in government payments to farm operations”, the ERS said.

Ahead of the second summit (họp thượng đỉnh) in Hanoi, North Korean dictator (nhà độc tài) Kim Jong Un requested (yêu cầu) as part of the agreement between the countries moving forward that the U.S. send “famous basketball players” to normalize relations (bình thường hóa quan hệ) between the two countries, according to two U.S. officials.

The request was made in writing, officials said, as part of the cultural exchange between the two countries, and at one point the North Koreans insisted that it be included in the joint statement on denuclearization (phi hạt nhân hóa). The North Koreans also made a request for the exchange of orchestras (dàn nhạc giao hưởng) between the two countries.

...Kim Jong Un's father Kim Jong Il was also a fan of basketball and requested that the U.S. send Michael Jordan to North Korea.

Jordan declined the request. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright instead gifted the North Koreans with a basketball signed by Jordan in 2000.
