"Eyes on stalks" nghĩa là gì?

Eric Ward on Unsplash

"Eyes on stalks" -> nghĩa là trố mắt lên vì bất ngờ, kinh ngạc.

Ví dụ
When you are in a cop drama (kịch tính) you have to say this speech about dead bodies and so on like you say this every day of the week, when you run sex parties, you have to walk around without your eyes on stalks going ‘aaaaaah’, so that was a challenge, but I think I did it.

The footage (đoạn băng) focused on the TV screen showing the squirrel before panning around to show Stella’s eyes on stalks as she watched the television in apparent disbelief.

And Hatari’s show, a magnificent C21st stew of New Beat, ramped up, Virgin Prunes aggression, Industrial noise and Attic Greek Tragedy has the crowd’s eyes on stalks.

I spent several days recently up beyond Inverness, and I’m not trying to suck up to the Scots, but it really is absolutely eyes-on-stalks beautiful. We often talk about breathtaking views, but in the Highlands they literally do that.

"In a quandary" nghĩa là gì?

"In a quandary" -> nghĩa là trong tình huống khó xử, lúng túng, không biết phải làm gì.

Ví dụ
An incident (trường hợp) in which four children tested positive for COVID-19 at a government school in the city has put the parents in a quandary on sending their children to school. This is despite the fact that most schools are following all the COVID-19 protocols.

The rapid (nhanh chóng) pace at which special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) are raising money is putting regulators across the region in a quandary: either further accommodate an unproven investment structure or risk being left behind.

Due to a lack of coordination at the federal level, the MBS management remained in a quandary over the complete closure of the service after the Punjab government announced its closure (đóng cửa) on Monday. The measure was taken after a high Covid-positivity rate was recorded in nine districts of Punjab, including Rawalpindi.

The partial (từng phần) acquisition (kiếm được) of buildings like shops and houses by the NHAI for construction of the proposed Pathankot- Mandi four lane project has left the affected people in Nurpur section from Kandwal to Bhedkhud in a quandary.

"Teeth chattering" nghĩa là gì?

Spencer Backman on Unsplash

"Teeth chattering" = răng lập cập -> nghĩa là lạnh, run lập cập.

Ví dụ
"In a world and in a life where we are surrounded by a lot of rules and technology and problems, the act of swimming in a pond (cái ao), especially cold water, is very raw and very pure," he added, his teeth chattering slightly.

Priests (thầy tu) and the Bishop of Paisley have been secretly shivering as the thermometer (nhiệt kế) plunged as low as MINUS SEVEN inside their cathedral. The teeth-chattering temperatures have also been endured by funeral mourners (người khóc thương) . . . as nobody else had been allowed through the door all winter.

Natwest, Barclays and Virgin Money were positively heaving, with queues stretching from each premises. Most of the clientele (khách hàng) were middle-aged - their teeth chattering in the cold as they waited to be ushered in to conduct their ‘essential banking’.

According to the long-term weather forecast from Accuweather, temperatures on Easter are only just predicted (dự đoán) to touch 10 degrees at the warmest part of the day - while the low temperature is set to be a teeth-chattering one degree above zero.

"Ego trip" nghĩa là gì?

Clay Banks on Unsplash

"Ego trip" -> nghĩa là làm việc để khẳng định cái tôi, khẳng định tầm quan trọng của bản thân.

Ví dụ
I do wish the Nicola loyalists who have filled the letters pages for days would pause (tạm dừng) for a moment and ask why this is happening. It is far too simplistic to try to portray (miêu tả) it as an ego trip.

The SNP has immediately slammed Alex Salmond’s launch of a political party as an ego trip that shows “no sign of reflecting on serious concerns about his own conduct (đạo đức)” or the covid pandemic recovery that ought to be the focus of the election.

Many people who think they have achieved this kind of enlightenment (khai sáng), turn that into an ego trip again, feeling elevated above everyone else.

It could have been a very expensive ego trip, but the reviews (phê bình) of the first album, Too Many Gods, made us realise that we were on to something.

"Drag your feet" nghĩa là gì?

Matheus Vinicius on Unsplash

"Drag your feet" = kéo lê chân -> nghĩa là làm việc với thái độ chậm chạp, uể oải vì không muốn làm chút nào.

Ví dụ
If Amazon were to drag its feet on an initial (ban đầu) contract, the union could call on the NLRB to order management to bargain with the workers. However, that legal process can span (kéo dài) months, even years, especially if the company were to appeal any enforcement moves from the labor board.

"I like making people happy and hooking them up with the right bike," Bond said. "But right now, given the current climate (hoàn cảnh), it's not the time to drag your feet."

Still, the price tag might make you drag your feet, so here are some reasons why you should take that plunge.

Doctors say it’s best to wait until September or October, since the effectiveness (hiệu quả) of the flu shot decreases over time. But it takes about two weeks for the vaccination to fully kick in, which means you don’t want to drag your feet until November.
