"Strike a chord" nghĩa là gì?

'Strike a chord with someone' = đánh đúng hợp âm -> đánh đúng tâm lý của ai; làm cho mọi người đồng ý hoặc chấp nhận điều gì đó; làm ai nhớ về thứ gì, gợi lên một cảm giác hay cảm xúc thân thuộc nào đó.

Ví dụ
Family Guy is one of those shows we have all seen and probably chuckled (cười thầm) at once upon a time. The type of edgy (dễ phật ý, hay bực mình), purposely offensive humor this cartoon was built upon doesn't always strike a chord today, however.

“We are seeing real success by featuring Product of USA/Alaska-themed promotions incorporating all species and forms from Alaska,” Salle says. “Alaska resonates (cộng hưởng; tạo ra tiếng vang) extremely well with consumers and stands for wild, sustainable and natural — all key attributes that strike a chord with consumers.”

But that doesn’t deter (ngăn cản) the 28-year-old, who is confident that the relatability of his material (he is hesitant to reveal the content of his new set) will strike a chord with audiences. That his earlier videos have clocked in millions of views on YouTube only adds to the assurance. “I will get to a point where I want the audience to take away something from my set, but for now I want them to have a blast,” says Dua, who thinks of himself not as a comic on stage but as a friend in the drawing room, there to share a story.

...Nearly two-fifths of Americans who described themselves as carnivores (động vật ăn thịt, cây ăn sâu bọ) told a survey by Mintel in February that they wanted to add more plant-based foods to their diet. Some call themselves “flexitarians”: not wholly vegetarian or vegan, but anxious to reduce their meat consumption nonetheless. Young people are the most fervently flexible.

...Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods, another plant-based food company in Silicon Valley, have entered the market. Impossible has raised $700m in private funds; its backers include Bill Gates. Since Beyond Meat went public in May its valuation has more than quintupled, to $8.4bn.

...(Children of the Quorn) Meatless meat has been around for a while. In 1901 John Harvey Kellogg, the inventor of the cornflake (which he hoped would make people less keen on sex), was granted a patent for protose, a “vegetable substitute for meat” made of wheat gluten and peanuts. For a long time, however, the market for pseudomeat was small, and the incentive for making it tasty was accordingly modest. This is perhaps why so many early veggie burgers had the taste and the texture of heavily salted woodchips.

"Draw them together" nghĩa là gì?

Mình đang ở đâu vậy mấy đứa? Photo by Yuriy Rzhemovskiy on Unsplash

"Draw someone or something together" nghĩa là kéo ai hoặc cái gì lại gần nhau; khiến mọi người xích lại gần nhau để che chở, ủng hộ về tinh thần.

Ví dụ
Using a sizeable (khá lớn) U-shaped barrier (hàng rào) with a net that drags beneath it, the system can grab plastics of all sizes and draw them together while fish swim away.

Each survivor's story was different, but there were enough points in common to draw them together in a common identity, joined together by empathy (sự thông cảm) and mutual (lẫn nhau) understanding.

If there is a better pairing then the cartoonish psychedelia (thế giới hư ảo) of the B-52s and the literal cartoons of the Archies I don’t know what it is. And getting to watch Dan Parent draw them together is an opportunity I obviously couldn’t pass up.

"Draw lots" nghĩa là gì?

"Draw/Cast lots" nghĩa là bốc thăm, rút thăm.

Ví dụ
Now the three Hundred franchises (đại lý) who do not have Test players on their books will draw lots to determine who gets first choice of the trio (bộ ba).

"We were going to just draw lots," said Ducati boss Claudio Domenicali. "But more than one rider said: 'How will I be able to win if I’m drawn in last place?'"

According to the Hickory Daily Record, the Board of Elections plans to hold a recount before canvassing (đi vận động) in order to sort out the tie. If that doesn’t work, Board Chair Barry Cheney told the paper, "We'll either have to flip a coin or draw lots or some other method to determine the winner."

Kissinger and Nixon both claim that the U.S. was initially stingy in its support  for  Lon  Nol  because  it did not  want to prejudge (vội đánh giá)  the situation (tình hình)  or compromise (làm tổn hại) Cambodia's neutrality (tính trung lập). But there  was really no question  that  Nixon would cast his lot with the new military ruler.

"Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed" = tinh mắt và đuôi nhiều lông. Từ bushy-tailed chỉ cho đuôi của con mèo, thường ve vẩy xù lông lên khi hào hứng điều gì. Cụm từ này nghĩa là nhiệt tình, tràn đầy nhiệt huyết và nghị lực.

Ví dụ
The Government promised, when they arrived in office all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, to have all government cars emissions-free (eg electric) by 2025.

He has appeared on camera at many a godforsaken (ảm đạm) by-election (cuộc bầu cử bổ sung), remaining bright-eyed and bushy-tailed throughout the nocturnal weighing of the Labour vote in one of its rotten (mục nát) boroughs (khu).

The Merritt Herald gave me my start as a newsroom (phòng biên tập tin tức) reporter in the spring of 2018. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, I dove head-first into reporting on city business, police files, school district policies and countless community events.

"Bright-line rule" = quy tắc vạch sáng -> cụm từ này nghĩa là quy tắc định nghĩa chuẩn. Các quy tắc này được thiết kế với cách hiểu rõ ràng, một khi đã áp dụng thì không thể lách luật.

Ví dụ
What do you need to achieve a goal (đạt được mục tiêu)? You need bright-line rules.

“What you’re saying to the cops is you have discretion (sự thận trọng, sự suy xét chín chắn) but you can no longer use the bright line rule,” the sheriff (quận trưởng cảnh sát) said, referring to a clearly defined standard.

The SEC declined to adopt a bright line rule, and instead took the position that whether a TTW communication would constitute (cấu thành) general solicitation (sự nài xin; sự xúi giục) depends on the facts and circumstances regarding the manner in which the communication is conducted.

"Bright young thing" nghĩa là gì?

"Bright young thing" = người trẻ sáng láng -> cụm từ này nghĩa là một nhân vật trẻ tuổi, giàu có, sành điệu, đầy tham vọng và có vẻ đẹp mê hoặc lòng người.

Ví dụ
Pougatch said: “If you’re [Jesse]Lingard or Dele Alli, interesting Dele Alli this week, getting rid of all of his commercial activities (hoạt động thương mại), realising that maybe he’s at a bit of a tipping point of his career: ‘hang on a second, I was the bright young thing at Tottenham and England and that’s not the case any longer’.”

In early 1980s London, Julie (Swinton Byrne) is the kind of bright young thing that would, in later years and lighter circumstances, be inseparable (không thể tách rời) BFFs with Emma Thompson's terribly chummy Maggie from 1992 university reunion comedy Peter's Friends (a sort of Return of the Secaucus Seven for wealthy Cambridge grads).

So it's interesting. There was huge competition to get these jobs. Because they were the single easiest way of enriching yourself in 18th century Britain. And so it was the equivalent (thứ tương đương) of joining Goldman Sachs, or McKinsey or something. If you were a bright young thing with good prospects (triển vọng) who needed money, this was the first port of call.

"Bright spark" = tia sáng -> cụm từ này nghĩa là kẻ tài trí, thông minh hơn người. Đôi khi cụm từ này còn được dùng để châm biếm, đùa cợt những người không có khả năng nhưng luôn cho mình là tài giỏi.

Ví dụ
The 21-year-old has been a rare bright spark in what has been a dismal (ảm đạm) campaign for the Premier League giants to date (đến bây giờ).

And none of us would be madly surprised if some bright spark in a Corbyn government were to suggest a pension-specific wealth tax for anyone with pension assets over, say, £500,000 — although, were that to be extended to those in the public sector, that would be financially unpleasant for people such as Mr Corbyn.

United have claimed just nine points from their opening eight games in the Premier League and are 12th in the table, 15 points behind leaders Liverpool. However, one bright spark to come out of the season so far is the integration (sự hòa nhập) of youth into Solskjaer’s squad, including the likes of Mason Greenwood, Scott McTominay, Axel Tuanzebe, Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes.

"Bright and early" nghĩa là sớm tinh mơ.

Ví dụ
Enjoy the long weekend — we’ll see you bright and early on Tuesday to talk about the crazy weeks ahead!

The Guardian morning briefing (tin chính) is delivered to thousands of inboxes bright and early every weekday.

The relatable post perfectly captures how difficult it is to leave a loved one warm and cosy (ấm cúng, thoải mái) in bed in the morning when you head off to work, but it's also clear that Dianne, 30, heads off to the rehearsal studio before Joe, 28, has even woken up! Dianne is known for arriving at the rehearsal studio bright and early.

"Bright spot" = chấm sáng -> một người, sự kiện, một phần gì đó lóe sáng, khả quan, tích cực trong toàn bộ chuỗi sự kiện hoặc tình huống tiêu cực, tồi tệ, không được như ý muốn.

Ví dụ
The New Jersey Devils got off to a poor start in the 2019-20 season, but Blake Coleman was a bright spot in an annoying game.

Even though services like call centers or software programming remain a hazy (mơ hồ) component in global trade data, services exports are a bright spot for the Guatemalan economy.

The increase was a rare bright spot for Latin America’s second-biggest economy, which has struggled to gain traction (sực kéo, lực kéo) under President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and narrowly avoided a recession (tình trạng suy thoái) in the first half of 2019.

Đen chút cho đặc biệt! Photo by Garett Mizunaka on Unsplash

"Buck the trend" = đánh bật xu hướng -> cụm từ này nghĩa là phát triển một cách bất ngờ, đáng ngạc nhiên, đặc biệt là đi ngược lại với lịch sử phát triển gần đây.

Ví dụ
The downhill trend in voter engagement is likely to be reflected in the total number of votes returned by deadline on October 12. Crucially, though, residents still have the chance to buck the trend.

The only company to buck the trend in the month was Renault, which posted a 29 percent growth but that was on a small base and on the back of an entirely refreshed line up of cars including new Duster, Triber and the new Kwid.

New product launches (ra mắt), particularly of wines that are clearly trying to buck the trend, are often disastrous (thảm họa), but this sparkling (sủi tăm) wine shows that it is possible to upset convention and yet still produce an entirely unexpected but epic and joyous (tràn ngập niềm vui) product.

"Cowards die many times before their death" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Fey Marin on Unsplash

"Cowards die many times before their death" -> những ai luôn lo lắng nghĩ về cái chết thì đã chịu căng thẳng / lo âu về nó nhiều lần rồi, trước khi thật sự lìa cõi đời.

Ví dụ
This problem is not as complex (phức tạp) as fighting a war for example. It is an issue of intelligence. We just need to know who did what. Once we know, these thugs (bọn côn đồ) cannot resist us. The game will be finished. Cowards die many times before their death.

Death is a necessary end, yes, but I do believe after all said and done that suicide (tự sát) is a cowardly end, it is living in the face of vicissitude (thăng trầm) and so much aridity (khô khan) that takes courage and as Shakespeare put it in Julius Caesar, “cowards die many times before their death, but the valiant never taste of death but once”. In my book a suicide is not a valiant.

The comrades will always be remembered for their bravery, commitment (tận tâm) and leadership roles during the liberation struggle and in the Community. Cowards die many times before their death but true heroes and heroines never taste of death but once.
