"Be common knowledge" nghĩa là gì?

Gia đình là nơi bão dừng sau cánh cửa! Photo by National Cancer Institute on Unsplash

"Be common/public knowledge" nghĩa là điều gì đó thường được biết đến rộng rãi (có thể đã hoặc chưa được công nhận).

Ví dụ
While it may be common knowledge that CISOs, CEOs, and even boards of directors are getting involved in cyber decisions, the security buyer has also moved laterally in the organization.

As we look ahead to a brand new decade of TV in 2020, it should be common knowledge by now that no matter what you're planning on watching, everything looks better in 4K ultra-high definition (độ phân giải cực cao).

Gucci and Harry Styles go way back. The musician’s love of eclectic fashion may be common knowledge these days, but Styles’s current wardrobe owes much to the aesthetic of the Italian house’s creative director, Alessandro Michele.

"It ought be common knowledge and universally known that the manner in which someone’s hair grows naturally from their scalp (da đầu) should not be deemed as ‘unprofessional’. It’s a shame it has to be written into law, but no one’s ability to progress in society should be contingent on how they choose to wear their hair."

"Knowledge is power" nghĩa là gì?

"Knowledge is power" = kiến thức là sức mạnh -> cụm từ này nghĩa là bạn càng biết nhiều thì quyền lực, quyền hạn của bạn càng lớn.

Ví dụ
Find out what’s required for you to follow through with your plans. Knowledge is power and will contribute to the confidence needed to reach your goal.

The aphorism (cách ngôn) “knowledge is power” holds a lot of truth, but it can be misleading (sai lạc). If information is to help rural populations thrive, the right conditions must be in place.

The new food guide provides simple and easy to understand advice that now, for the first time ever in Canada, outlines more than just the basics of foods. Similar to Brazil, the guide focuses on advice like cooking more meals at home, eating in a social setting, and being wary of food marketing. It also educates on using food labels. All of these things are to give Canadians more education on how food works, building on the trend that knowledge is power, or in this case, health.

"Go on the wagon" nghĩa là gì?

Tự hứa với lòng mình đây là ly cuối cùng trong đời. Photo by  Toa Heftiba

"Go on the wagon" = (thông tục) kiêng rượu, không uống rượu nữa, chống uống rượu.

Ví dụ
It started as a public health campaign by the British government five years ago, but now Dry January has morphed into a worldwide event, challenging people to go on the wagon for a month.

So where to start? I don’t normally drink much in the week, but I feel I have to make up for the excesses of my holiday, so I have decided to go on the wagon until the weekend. Admittedly, I kick-started this new regimen (chế độ ăn uống, dinh dưỡng) at a very jolly (ngà ngà say) 60th birthday party. At least I shed some of the alcohol-induced calories by gyrating around the dance floor.

Some of us struggle to prepare holiday meals that would make Martha Stewart proud, and find ourselves too tired to enjoy the celebration. Many of us rationalize (hợp lý hóa) holiday excess by convincing ourselves that come New Year’s Day, we will follow a more sensible diet, exercise more, pay off holiday debts by getting a second job, and cut back on alcohol and other drugs, or go on the wagon all together.

"Go in fear of your life" nghĩa là gì?

Sống không khác gì địa ngục. Photo by Daniel Monteiro

"Go in fear of (one's) life" = Lo sợ về tính mạng của mình -> Lúc nào cũng sợ hãi/lo lắng mình có khả năng bị tấn công hoặc bị giết.

Ví dụ
“I live in fear of my life. I am scared. We are being bombed. The area that I am in is being bombed by the Russian air force. The bombs are getting closer and closer and closer. I need your help. Please help me,” Mohamed says.

And in the Muslim world you already see cultural policy being dictated (ra lệnh, sai khiến) by fundamentalism (trào lưu chính thống (tin tuyệt đối vào (kinh thánh)) . You pretty much can't be a secular atheist (người vô thần trường kỳ) in the Muslim world and express that opinion. You go in fear of your life, basically.

Heather had ‘married a man old enough to be her father’. June had ‘married a man old enough to be her son, and had a child out of wedlock (tình trạng đã kết hôn)’. Anthony ‘was to have inherited, but not now he’s seeing Heather’. Clarissa ‘was an afterthought who has twice caused me grievous bodily harm and of whom I go in fear of my life’.

"Have a working knowledge of (something)" nghĩa là biết một cái gì đó đủ giỏi để có thể sử dụng nó.

Ví dụ
Have a working knowledge of social and community psychosocial and rehabilitation (sự phục hồi) approaches to assist in building up community and home-based care support

The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of a membership organization and be comfortable with public speaking and sales. Attractive benefit package includes a company vehicle.

The older folks still have a working knowledge of ancient pop lore, and can tell you why it’s such a big deal that the Bee, last season, turned out to be none other than the great Gladys Knight.

That’s why professionals across organisations, independent of their job roles, are expected to have a working knowledge of AI and how they can effectively use these disruptive (đánh thủng) technologies in their area of work.

"Be raring to go" nghĩa là gì?

"Be raring to go" = Dám đi -> Rất háo hức và sẵn sàng hành động.

Ví dụ
Jonathan Dibben is raring to go as he prepares for a second chance at WorldTour level with Lotto Soudal in 2020.

“I am raring to go now. I have recovered completely and will play in the ranking series event in Rome in January. I am also planning to play in the Asian Championships in February.”

There are stark (lộ hẳn ra, lộ rõ ràng) differences in terms of experience between South Africa’s men’s and women’s Cape Town Sevens squads, but both groups of players are raring to go. The two sides will be in action concurrently from 13-15 December.

"Go in search of the golden fleece" = Đi tìm huân chương hiệp sĩ -> Lao vào/dấn mình vào một cuộc thám hiểm, hoặc sự gian lao và đầy thử thách.

Ví dụ
Participants have the opportunity to share their stories on a national platform and go in search of the golden fleece surrounded by peers "from across the disability community."

Frozen II breaks many gender stereotypes (đặc trưng giới tính). The story is centered around Elsa and Anna, sisters who go in search of the golden fleece to find the truth about their pasts and fix humanity’s relationship with nature.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Mr Rees-Mogg said: 'Like Jason in search of the golden fleece, the Prime Minister has overcome the mightiest of obstacles (sự thách thức) to return with a deal that fulfils the mandate (lệnh trát, ủy nhiệm) of the referendum (cuộc trưng cầu ý dân) vote.

"Go from one extreme to another" nghĩa là gì?

"Go from one extreme to another" = Từ cực độ biến thành cái khác, từ cực này đến cực khác -> Thay đổi bản chất giữa hai điều hoặc hai sự khẳng định rất khác nhau.

Ví dụ
Other than the strong winds, temperatures Saturday are almost 10-degrees warmer than what we had for Friday, and are right around the norm for early June, but we're going to go from one extreme to another in the coming days.

German philosopher Georg Hegel wrote about how the “dialectic” (biện chứng) drives history. He famously described it as the dynamic of “thesis (luận đề, luận điểm), antithesis (phản đề), synthesis (sự tổng hợp).” Put simply, ideas go from one extreme to another and eventually end up in the middle.

Successfully bowhunting trophy whitetails takes extraordinary patience. When you compound (pha trộn, kết hợp) the difficulty of short-range hunting tools and self-imposed restrictions (sự nghiêm cấm), you’ve shifted (thay đổi) the odds heavily in favor of the deer. You really have to love the hunt to maintain any semblance (giống với) of sanity throughout the ups and downs of bow season. On any given day, at any given minute, the emotions of hunting can go from one extreme to another.

"Go from zero to hero" nghĩa là gì?

"Go from zero to hero" = Đi lên từ con số không thành anh hùng/vươn lên từ hèn khó và trở thành sao sáng. -> Thay đổi tình thế từ thất bại, khó khăn, tiêu cực hoặc không may mắn thành thành công, tích cực và tỏa sáng.

Ví dụ
If someone wants to give the stock a price target of zero, that's fine with me; I'll stick to my thesis that the stock will, in time, go from zero to hero.

And that is why it is so hard for Ben to take credit for the extraordinary (phi thường, diệu kỳ) performances that saw him go from zero to hero – a phrase he hates.

Great Stan Lee's ghost! If you would have told me a year ago that Nanjiani would one day post what can only be described as "thirst trap" photos for his Marvel transformation, I would not have believed you. It just goes to show that with the right diet, a quality training program, and some good old fashioned sticktoitiveness (tính ương ngạnh), that just about anyone can go from zero to hero. That's not to say that Nanjiani was a zero before signing onto THE ETERNALS, mind you. Far from it. I'm actually rather fond of his snappy comedic style and smartly-written scripts (kịch bản). In fact, the only that's changed is that I now know for certain that he can kick my ass any day of the week.

"Go down the chute" nghĩa là gì?

Cũng không đau lắm, nằm tí thôi mà. Photo by nrd

"Go down the chute" = Lao dốc, xuống dốc -> Bị thất bại; bị phá hoại; bị vứt đi.

Ví dụ
"It was a big deal when we watched the letter go down the chute last July and a strange little heartbreak when it never came," said MacVeagh.

Without a fair price for the produce and meaningful mechanisation (cơ giới hóa), agriculture will go down the chute and increasing farm incomes will remain a pipe dream.

You have to go down the chute.” – Tina Fey. 56. “If something is important enough, even if the odds (sự khó khăn, thách thức) are against you, you should still do it.

"Go down in defeat" nghĩa là gì?

"Go down in defeat" = Bị hạ gục -> Bị thua cuộc, bị đối thủ đánh bại.

Ví dụ
The Patriots enjoyed the bye week more than most as they got to sit at home and watch some of their top competitors in the AFC go down in defeat. At the top of that list was the Buffalo Bills, who dropped a gut-wrenching 19-16 decision in Cleveland to drop to 6-3, a full two games behind New England in the AFC East.

The cliche (lời nói sáo, rập khuôn) of “any given Sunday” certainly applies in a league where anything can, and often does, happen. It’s not uncommon to see a team inexplicably (không giải thích được) go down in defeat — the Philadelphia Eagles’ loss to the Miami Dolphins last weekend is another example — in a games it shouldn’t lose.

For center-left Democrats, that’s exactly their hope — that the two senators (thượng nghị sĩ) divide votes in so many contests that neither is able to capture the nomination (sự đề cử). Moderates in the party fear that if Ms. Warren or Mr. Sanders pull away — or if they ultimately join forces (tham gia vào lực lượng quân đội) — the ticket would unnerve independent voters and go down in defeat against President Trump.

"Go commando" nghĩa là gì?

"Go commando" = Đi biệt kích, đặc công -> (thông tục) không mặc quần lót bên trong.

Ví dụ
See-through swimwear (đồ bơi), boobs covered in glitter (lấp lánh, long lanh) and clothing that FORCES you to go commando: The raciest fashion trends of 2019 revealed.

Plenty of people go commando every day and don't experience any negative side effects (tác dụng phụ, mặt xấu). But in general, there are some reasons why health experts recommend throwing on a pair, particularly the kind that's breathable.

What about striking a pose in the gondola (giỏ khí cầu) of a hot air balloon? Like the way Vidya Balan and Farhan Akhtar promoted their Shaadi Ke Side Effects in 2014. Or, go commando in a done-up room for the latest in pre- or post-wedding photography: boudoir (phòng khuê). Risque? (táo bạo) People are willing to take risks—in the air, underwater, hanging by a rope from a cliff (vách đá) face, posing (tạo dáng) on airport runways, or on a sultry (nóng oi bức, nhục cảm) couch.

"Go climb a tree" nghĩa là gì?

Anh chàng thích leo trèo. Photo by Marvin Meyer

"Go climb a tree" = Đi leo cây đi -> (thông tục) Cút đi/đi đi, để tôi yên một mình!

Ví dụ
“Telling someone go climb a tree or to go to the playground and have fun and unleash (tháo gỡ, giải phóng) your potential isn't going to work,” Le Corre said.

I think the Prophet Mohammed is a silly goose (kẻ ngốc), and I don't particularly care for him. He's a jerk. For all I care, he can go climb a tree. There. I said it and I'm not sorry. Come and get me, coppers!

Second, I don’t need a man to protect me and watch out for me. At 5’2”, I do need a man to reach stuff on the high shelf, but that’s about it. So, Tim Kennedy, we are letting boys be boys, but we’re also letting all kids embrace who they are and treating them with the same expectations (sự kỳ vọng). The problem is the easy accessibility to guns in this country, but whatever, go climb a tree or some sh*t.

"Ways and means" nghĩa là gì?

Peace! Photo by Mike from Pexels

"Ways and means" = cách thức và phương thức làm điều gì. "Committee of Ways and Means" là ủy ban tài chính hạ viện, theo đó "ways and means" là cách thức gia tăng quốc khố.

Ví dụ
All around Dharamshala are posters and flyers offering ways and means to find inner peace (tâm bình an).

Senator Humason represented the interests of more than 11 western Massachusetts communities (cộng đồng), earning himself a spot on the ethics committee (ủy ban), the ways and means committee and the public health committee to name a few.

There has to be a coordination (phối hợp) between the Kashmiri leadership on the ground and the Kashmiri diaspora (cộng đồng người Do Thái). Yes, indeed, we cannot talk to them directly because of the internet blockade (phong tỏa), but there are ways and means to remain in constant communication with them.

“This is a transformative agreement (thỏa thuận thay đổi),” said Richard Neal, the chairman (chủ tịch) of the ways and means committee in congress which has authority over trade policy (chính sách thương mại), noting that Democrats (Đảng Dân chủ) had substantially changed the agreement since it passed from the White House to Congress earlier this year.

"Truth, justice, and the American Way" nghĩa là gì?

"Truth, justice, and the American Way" (TJATAW) = sự thật, công lý và con đường Mỹ -> là châm ngôn của mọi "Superman".

It’s the real world Hydra taken to a nightmarish (ác mộng) degree. Only by dragging it into the daylight and exposing it for what it is can we even dare come close to anything resembling (tương tự) “truth, justice, and the American Way” we dream about.

Will the Republicans (Đảng Cộng hòa) continue to hold their collective noses, so they can’t smell the stench (mùi hôi thối) sweeping down from Pennsylvania Avenue, or will they begin to return, teary eyed, to their former, pre-Trumpian ideals, of truth, justice and the American way?

Breaking News: Anybody can say anything about anybody else. And in the age of social media, they probably will. Time was when all professional journalists (nhà báo) understood that. Not that there was ever a Golden Age of what Superman called “Truth, Justice and the American Way.”

"Drop some knowledge on" nghĩa là gì?

Mới được chỉ vài đường cơ bản! Photo by Tim Arterbury on Unsplash

"Drop some knowledge on (someone)" nghĩa là cung cấp thông tin gì cho ai; thông báo hoặc dạy ai điều gì.

Ví dụ
Noting that it only took her a few minutes to drop some knowledge on the "Banger" beat, Pretty Savage told us that she caught a vibe and went off how she felt upon hearing the instrumental.

Black-ish (hơi đen, đen đen) star Tracee Ellis Ross just shared a no-makeup selfie video—in which she looked radiant (rạng rỡ), natch—and kindly decided to drop some knowledge on her followers, too.

Elf is one of the few Christmas movies I can stand, sitting alongside The Nightmare Before Christmas, Die Hard, and Gremlins. It’s been a holiday staple with our kid since she was old enough to look at the television screen to watch it, so it makes sense to drop some knowledge on everyone concerning this magical movie.

"Age before beauty" nghĩa là gì?

Kính lão thì đắc thọ, người đẹp thì phải nâng niu. Photo by Samarth Singhai from Pexels

"Age before beauty" = tuổi tác quan trọng hơn gái đẹp -> kính lão đắc thọ, người già trước, trẻ sau. Thường là cách nói vui khi nhường ai đó đi trước.

Ví dụ
There is no “age before beauty,” not for them. There is aged beauty (vẻ đẹp từng trải), and the beauty that seems only to come with having been around.

“Age before beauty,” he whispered as Cook walked in front of him, entering the room. Michael stepped into the room behind him and was dumbfounded (đứng người).

LEVITAN MUST HAVE BEEN working on the principle of age before beauty, it seemed at least one infinity later before Sarah found herself in the den (phòng làm việc nhỏ) that had also been George Protheroe's bedroom.

There were five men and two other women: a pretty brunette (da nâu) woman in her twenties and a woman in her sixties, standing further back. Before anyone could move, the older woman sang out, “Age before beauty!” and walked boldly (bước mạnh) through the doors.

"Come to your knowledge" nghĩa là gì?

"Come to (someone's) knowledge" nghĩa là được (ai đó) biết đến, chú ý đến.

Ví dụ
It must have come to your knowledge that earlier the plan was to hold the opening ceremony on January 3, but then the only option was to hold the match in some other state.

"These are unfortunate (không may mắn) cases that come to light by the time it comes to the media you never know how many times that child that adult that individual has been assaulted and its finally come to your knowledge, the community's knowledge," Cabot said.

You shall present [indict] no person from envy, hatred (lòng thù ghét) or malice (ác tâm, hận thù); neither shall you leave any person unpresented for love, fear, favor, affection or hope of reward; but you shall present things truly as they come to your knowledge, according to the best of your understanding.

"The longest way round is the shortest way home" nghĩa là gì?

Đường tắt mà toàn ổ voi ổ chó thì thôi bỏ qua nhé. Photo by Simon Migaj from Pexels

"The longest way round is the shortest way home" = (tục ngữ) đường chính lại gần, đường tắt hoá xa.

Ví dụ
You are, FYI (For Your Information), rather popular these days. Still, I write, in the hope that this letter, fired into the void of the internet, will with time make it to you somehow, and that, as you’ve put it, the longest way round is the shortest way home.

Opening a dialogue between them is no easy task. One must go easy, take contradictory factors (yếu tố trái ngược) into consideration, keep an open mind, and not bully a way through to pre-judged outcomes. As the storyteller’s manner reminds us, the longest way round is the shortest way home. Digression (lạc đề) is just a long embrace.

A few years after the Stonewall uprising, as a college student, I struggled (cố gắng) to make sense of my sexuality and of “Ulysses” by James Joyce. Yet my younger self, a kid who couldn’t wait to escape from South Jersey, understood what Joyce meant when he wrote, “Think you’re escaping and run into yourself. Longest way round is the shortest way home.”

The former Austrian Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache spent between €2,000 and €3,000 ($2,200–3,300) a month playing the mobile phone game "Clash of Clans," and charged the fees to his political party (đảng chính trị), according to a lawyer formerly close to him.

The bizarre detail from Strache's life was included in a report the Ibiza-based lawyer, named only as M., filed to the Austrian federal police in 2015.

Strache, the former leader of the far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), resigned (từ chức) all his political posts (tất cả các chức vụ chính trị) and retired from politics (rời khỏi chính trường) in October after a video emerged of him in Ibiza offering business contacts in exchange for political support (ủng hộ chính trị) from a woman posing as the niece (cháu gái) of a Russian oligarch (trùm đầu sỏ).

The "Ibiza scandal" had a seismic (như địa chấn, chấn động) effect (tác động) on Austrian politics with the FPÖ losing voters in the subsequent election. Strache was expelled (khai trừ đảng) from the party earlier this month.
