"Bump along the bottom" nghĩa là gì?

"Bump along the bottom" = chấp chới dưới đáy -> nghĩa là nghèo khó, không có dấu hiệu cải thiện.

Ví dụ
Europe's airline capacity bumps along the bottom; lockdowns ease. Total seat numbers in Europe have dropped 86.5% year-on-year in the week commencing (mở đầu) 11-May-2020, according to schedules from OAG, combined with CAPA Fleet Database seat configurations. This is very fractionally (phần nhỏ) better than the previous week's 87.1% decline, but the third successive week very close to -87% after hitting a low of -90.4% in the week of 20-Apr-2020.

Before recovery, first we must find the bottom. You’ll know the bottom because that’s the point at which things stop getting worse. We’ll bump along the bottom for a period of time – perhaps quarters or years, but certainly not a couple of months – and only then will shattered (tan nát) confidence gradually start to return.

Nearly two-thirds of survey respondents expect the economy to bump along the bottom for some period of time before beginning to recover sometime in late 2020 or early 2021 — looking more like a narrow or even wide ‘U-curve’ trajectory (đường đạn).

“The pair continues to bump along the bottom of the recent range around €1.1050, awaiting some fresh impetus (thúc đẩy). “That fresh impetus is unlikely to be found today, despite the release of ECB minutes and a host of ECB speakers, with the market remaining fixated on the latest US coronavirus infection numbers.”

There are few ports, even the remotest spots around the world, where Jon Sanders isn’t recognised and hailed. He’s sailed into ports so many times, he can do it with his eyes shut.

Having loved the recent Resident Evil remake and played it so much I could probably finish it with my eyes shut I’d really like to play through the original, just for comparison purposes.

Very talkative (lắm chuyện), someone might ask if he had been “vaccinated with a Victrola needle?” A personable young man, he went out of his way to honor service members and military veterans (cựu chiến binh quân đội) and thank them for their service. He frequently sought out Pease Air Force members when he was out shopping locally.

“My Great Uncle Paul Pickering lived in Kansas City and worked for the Kansas City Star for years. When Paul would run across someone who talked to excess, he would surmise (phỏng đoán) that when they were a baby, they had been vaccinated with a Victrola needle,” the Missouri Republican wrote. “When I met Chris Collins, the first thing I thought of was Uncle Paul. I thought Paul would have said, ‘this guy must have been vaccinated with a Victrola needle.’ It was like he had Tourette Syndrome minus the cuss (chửi rủa) words.”

Mr Sassoli also called for a de-escalation (sự tiết giảm) of tensions with Turkey. “The Turkish rhetoric is growing increasingly aggressive and the country's intervention in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is certainly not helping matters. Now is the time for the EU to fully support German mediation efforts, to stand united and speak with one voice,” he said.

Day Two of the Y20 Summit was focused on the Future Fit theme. In a keynote address, Henrietta Fore, Executive Director of UNICEF, said: “As we prepare for the G20 discussions, UNICEF calls on governments to safeguard their budgets and reallocate precious funds for education, training, skills and digital learning to the most marginalised. Being fit for the future means that we have to speak with one voice - UNICEF, Y20 members and all of our partners.” She added: “so let us call on global leaders to reduce the digital divide, and make sure that every child can access learning and skills, no matter where they live.”

The president of the National Union of Students (NUS) told ITV shocking stories of students having to sup with Sir Thomas Gresham in "disgusting conditions" as security guards (nhân viên an ninh/bảo vệ) watch exits to ensure they stay indoors.

"Take liberties with" nghĩa là gì?

"Take liberties with" = tước đoạt sự tự do -> nghĩa là hành động bất kính/không đẹp; sửa đổi cái gì để ích lợi cho mục tiêu của mình; hoặc thoải mái lạm dụng ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
“That is in the same time frame. And they have a lot more skills, they are on top of their career,” he said. Unlike GP on maternity leave Mrs Barry, Mr Barry does not work in healthcare, but said that his own field of engineering has not seen anything comparable to the rise in pay scale of the MPs. “I do my work, I pay my taxes and I don’t pay my taxes for people to take liberties with it, basically,” he added.

“It was as good as an away performance I could’ve wished for. “I was a bit disappointed at half-time because once we scored I thought we sort of went into cruise control. “But we saw it out well and I was really pleased for Lloydy (George Lloyd) and I thought he deserved his goal. “It’s a good result and you can’t take liberties with any team in this league. “That’s also five clean sheets in five away games now so that always gives you a chance.”

I was advised by a colleague that when in a white van you were the ‘King of the Road’, meaning that you could take liberties with driving styles and parking. I found this to be true. As a ‘König der Strasse‘ I parked anywhere and everywhere, and never got a ticket. I parked once at a busy bus stop outside a skyscraper (nhà chọc trời) office building on Berliner Strasse, for 30 minutes. I went back and forward, hauling about 40 parcels up to various offices, with the hazard lights blinking. I knew that I was being watched on CCTV by beady-eyed traffic police. They didn’t give a damn, unlike the waiting bus passengers who loudly complained. Not even the bus drivers gave me grief. The brotherhood of drivers.

"Up with the crows" nghĩa là gì?

"Up with the crows" = thức dậy theo tiếng gà gáy -> nghĩa là dậy và bắt đầu hoạt động từ rất sớm.

Ví dụ
“We were all in a really good mood because we felt, OK, people took the trouble to be up the crows and show up to vote and make sure it works right,” she said. “There were a lot of people ... it made me feel happy."

Friends of mine faced similar issues later in the day. I am up the crows, and I speculated that there would be a “run” on her books as the news spread in literary circles. I was right. As the day progressed, it became more and more difficult to find those out-of-print books. They still haven’t arrived at my house, so I have an interesting opportunity here that I’ve only had once before.

“Well, you have a good point, Steve,” correspondent Griff Jenkins responded. “It’s interesting: [It’s] now after 6 a.m. on the East Coast and the former vice president has not responded. No statement, no Twitter.” Even now, the message was that slugabed (lười biếng, dậy lúc trưa) Biden is hardly a match for our vigorous president, who gets up with the crows (to spend many, many hours watching morning television each day).

"Scrape an acquaintance with" nghĩa là gì?

"Scrape an acquaintance with" có acquaintance là làm quen -> cụm từ này nghĩa là cố gắng gặp gỡ/làm bạn với ai có ích lợi cho bản thân mình.

Ví dụ
Apparently StanChart’s sanctions issues were all the fault of two (inevitably junior) employees. The seniority of those previously happy to scrape an acquaintance with the Duke is unclear. Barclays, whose list of scandals would take this column over length, has also concluded that cocktails with the Prince are not quite what they were and so has decided to find other business mentoring schemes to back. Like Claude Rains, crooked gendarme in Casablanca, all these businesses were “shocked, shocked”.

"Three or four days ago, a poor, lean, mangy cur was attacked in the street by a larger dog, and was getting unmercifully walloped, when BUMMER's ire being aroused at the unequal contest... He rushed in and gave the attacking canine (răng nanh, chó) such a rough handling that he was glad to quit the field. ... The poor cur had one of his legs half bitten through, and having limped upon the sidewalk, he proceeded to scrape an acquaintance with his deliverer, BUMMER, who thenceforth took him under his special protection. Every night since then, the 'twa dogs' have slept coiled up together close to some doorway - BUMMER always giving the lame cur the inside booth, and trying to keep him as warm as possible."

"The bottom falls out of your world" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Eric Ward on Unsplash

"The bottom falls out of your world" -> nghĩa là mất hết hạnh phúc, tự tin hoặc động lực, suy sụp hoàn toàn do gặp phải chuyện xấu.

Ví dụ
Her choice to keep her illness from you is puzzling (khó xử), but there are mitigating (làm dịu) factors that we have to try to understand in order to see her side of the picture. While perhaps misplaced, the sheer bravery of enduring these last two years without burdening (trở thành gánh nặng) anyone with her diagnosis is impressive. It’s not the right thing to do, but it takes an enormous amount of courage not to seek out the support of those closest to you when the bottom falls out of your world.

“The bottom falls out of your world,” she said. “I had young kids – 13, 8 and 6.  Now my kids have a family history, so I’m always wondering if I could protect them by buying a supplement. Every time I see something I still get excited.  Maybe I could guarantee (đảm bảo) my kids never get cancer. Everything sounds so promising and hopeful.  I don’t know who to believe.  Most people won’t dig as deeply as I do.”

The bottom falls out of your world and you have a million questions: is he going to survive, what’s he going to be faced with if he does survive, what are the risks (mối nguy)?

Speaking at the launch of Birmingham city centre’s newest Cancer Research UK shop, in Corporation Street, her mum, also called Maria, said: “When Maria was diagnosed (chẩn đoán) with cancer it was such a terrible thing to hear. “The bottom falls out of your world. At first she didn’t want to hear the details about what would happen to her although she knew she would lose her hair.

"Why break the habit of a lifetime?" nghĩa là gì?

"Why break the habit of a lifetime?" = sao bỏ thói quen của cả đời vậy? -> câu hỏi biểu thị sự hoài nghi khi ai đó thay đổi thói quen xấu của họ.

Ví dụ
He also apologised for a few rather forward texts over the weekend. Shall I keep them private? No, why break the habit of a lifetime? Here they are: 'I will examine your nether (ở dưới) regions at close quarters' and 'Let me be the judge of the cauliflower couscous' (I had talked about what I currently look like naked on my podcast). I mean, seriously! I'm from Chelmsford! I kept my T-shirt on and was known to unscrew lightbulbs whenever my husband looked like he wanted sex!

The man is only getting better with age. At 35, many players are probably making retirement (giải nghệ) plans.  But not Ronaldo. He'll still be putting in the work on the training pitch every single day. He's been doing that for over two decades now, so why break the habit of a lifetime?

Fifteen minutes later, the prime ministerial limo pulled up and Johnson shambled (lóng ngóng) his way to the wooden lectern. This was his big moment. The one he’d been waiting for all his life. The one he had lied, backstabbed (đâm sau lưng) and cheated to get his hands on. Here was his chance to make the speech of his life. To amaze and engage. But then, why break the habit of a lifetime?

Not that there was much chance of either Boris Johnson or Jeremy Hunt paying a blind bit of (một chút ít, một tí) notice to a word she had said – why break the habit of a lifetime? – at the leadership hustings in York an hour or so later.

"Why keep a dog and bark yourself" nghĩa là gì?

"Why keep a dog and bark yourself" = tại sao nuôi chó và tự mình sủa -> nghĩa là không nên làm công việc mà bạn đã thuê người khác làm.

Ví dụ
There’s an old saying: “Why keep a dog and bark yourself?” The meaning is simple. If you’re paying good money for something (a dog) that can do something (bark) better than you can, why would you choose to still do that same thing yourself?

David Ogilvy famously asked clients of his agency wanting to write their own work: "Why keep a dog and bark yourself?" Half-a-century later, it appears that, for some clients, the answer is, "Who needs a bloody dog?" Which brings us to the thorny (hóc búa) question of why use an advertising agency at all. One of the more curious things about the advertising business is that it hires strategic and creative talent that might otherwise go straight into client organisations and rents them back at somewhat of a premium.

These people were constantly reminded by the independent financial advisor involved in this that they had carried out ‘due diligence (chuyên cần)’. Why keep a dog and bark yourself?

"Whys and wherefores" nghĩa là gì?

Cùng tìm nguyên nhân nào. Photo by Marten Newhall on Unsplash

"Whys and wherefores" -> nghĩa là những yếu tố cơ bản làm nên, tạo nên điều gì.

Ví dụ
The key whys and wherefores behind this being the content of the low composite (vật liệu) on B737MAX coupled with (kết hợp với) the rose in the production of composite-rich aircraft, B787 that neutralized the ripple effect of the B737 max grounding.

Whatever the whys and wherefores of Burnley’s transfer (chuyển nhượng) business, Sean Dyche started Project Restart short on (thiếu) players due to injury and contractual situations.

In his quiet time, Zverev will also undoubtedly mull over (ngẫm nghĩ) the whys and wherefores of another year gone by without a breakthrough (đột phá) win at a Grand Slam event. That success has been predicted for him for years, but it remains an elusive (khó nắm) dream -- one that turned into a nightmare when Zverev surrendered an enormous lead, came within two points of winning and still lost the recent US Open final to Dominic Thiem.

While stats (điểm số) don’t always explain the whys and wherefores of a victory or setback (thất bại), sometimes they do. Which brings me to the University of Louisville’s 20-23 defeat to Pat Narduzzi’s Pitt Panthers. I hope my abacus has been working correctly. If so, U of L’s rushing numbers are telling.

"Ours not to reason why" nghĩa là gì?

"Ours not to reason why" -> nghĩa là không ở vị thế/vị trí có quyền hoài nghi, phản đối mệnh lệnh, tình huống hoặc cách thức công việc được tiến hành.

Ví dụ
It really shows how quickly fortunes (vận may) can change. There we were, the model kid in class that was doing so well at the start and then, kapow – we are at the back of the class, and wondering how we got there. But ours not to reason why, ours but to do and obey (tuân theo) because it’s the right thing to do for the greater good. The sooner we can knock this thing on its head, the better for everyone.

Then, as now, it is equally the fault of the political pundits (học giả) in Westminster and the craven civil service in Whitehall, as much as that of the Lords Raglan and Cardigan, that people are exposed to death when cannons and coronavirus ‘volley and thunder’. Also, now as then, there is no excuse except the grace and saving-face (giữ thể diện) of death or dismissal for those who blindly follow orders under the imprimatur (phê chuẩn, cho phép) ‘ours not to reason why; ours but to do or die’.

I did not understand these trend (trào lưu) pieces until I read a Keith Gessen short story. Ours not to reason why, ours but to do or die — and to that end I would like to be thrown off Masada by Keith Gessen, as the audiobook of his novel “A Terrible Country” plays.

If questions are not asked, there’s every chance someone blunders (sai lầm). There’s every chance blunders are happening right now. If it’s ours not to make reply, ours not to reason why, then ours but to do and die.
