"Toy with the idea" nghĩa là gì?

Lucas Lenzi on Unsplash

"Toy with the idea" = đùa nghịch với ý tưởng -> nghĩa là suy nghĩ, cân nhắc không kĩ càng, cẩn thận.

Ví dụ
Arsenal have four full days of recovery (hồi phục) following Sunday ahead of another home fixture with Everton, thus the manager will toy with the idea of giving others a chance in the side or building a foundation.

Though the Colts will toy with the idea of moving either Quenton Nelson or Braden Smith to left tackle, there is a strong chance they use one of their picks (lựa chọn) in first or second round at the position. This draft class boasts a deep group, many of which will have the attention of the Colts.

Congressional members continue to toy with the idea of amending (cải thiện) or eliminating that section, but some believe doing so would solve the issue because the social media companies would be forced to curb (kiềm chế) misinformation and fake news or face costly lawsuits.

Because I hate grocery-shopping and meal-planning, I’m starting to toy with the idea of a meal kit delivery service.

"A harebrained idea" nghĩa là gì?

Michal Matlon on Unsplash

"A harebrained idea" có harebrained là liều lĩnh -> nghĩa là ý kiến, gợi ý ngu ngốc, không thực tế.

Ví dụ
It may seem like a harebrained idea, but one popular pandemic pet seems to be chickens. The start of the pandemic saw more people buying chickens to raise (nuôi lớn) right in their own backyards and it seems the trend (phong trào) is holding strong. Several pet stores told CBS13 they’ve never seen anything like it.

Asking working Americans to give up even one dime of their future Social Security benefits to survive today’s economic crisis (khủng hoảng) is a harebrained idea that would hurt families for decades to come.

Fortune spoke to four of Peloton’s five cofounders (đồng sáng lập)—the ones who are still with the company—to better understand how they turned a harebrained idea into such a sensation (tin giật gân). The video interview took place in January, and featured John Foley, Peloton’s chief executive, along with his three closest and longest-serving lieutenants.

Chances are, you’ve done at least a couple of big adventure rides in the past that served as de facto (thực tế) events for the simple reason that someone cooked up (nảy ra) a harebrained idea and invited you along.

"Acquired taste" nghĩa là gì?

"Acquired taste" -> nghĩa là lần đầu thử ăn/uống thì mùi vị không ngon lắm nhưng ăn vài lần thì lại thích, ngon; sở thích do quen mà có.

Ví dụ
As a fourth-year, I have evidently aged — and so has my food palette. I am past the blandness (nhạt nhẽo) of the dining halls, along with the basic assumptions of plain avocado toast. As a kid, if I did not like what was for dinner, my dad would always tell me I could have toast, and now I see why. Toast, when done right, is life-saving. As a self-identified foodie with an acquired taste, I can say avocado toast should not be basic because it just might save your year.

As I said earlier Citroen as a brand is very much an acquired taste but for those that love French style and character it offers a real point of difference. There’s a real charm to current Citroen’s and the small C3 five-door hatch I’ve just driven has a certain funkiness that’s’ very appealing. A 1.2-litre three-cylinder six speed automatic at $28,990 with five-years/unlimited kilometre warranty and roadside assistance and a real bonus of five-years free service.

There’s a reason bleu cheese, olives, and wasabi don’t appear on kids' menus: All three ingredients have assertive flavors that would turn off most children with functioning taste receptors. But something interesting happens after several years of development—many of the same kids that used to gag at anything bitter or funky start to accept, or actively seek out, those same bold flavors in their diets. This change has nothing to do with maturing taste buds. Rather, it can be explained by the purely psychological phenomenon of acquired taste.

"Absent-minded professor" nghĩa là gì?

"Absent-minded professor" = vị giáo sư đãng trí -> nghĩa là người thông minh khác thường thì thiếu hiểu biết thông thường, hay quên/phớt lờ các chi tiết quan trọng.

Ví dụ
It replaces George with Alexander Hartdegen (Guy Pierce), a New Yorker of all things and an absent minded professor of engineering.

On the stand, Mr. LaPierre comes across as an antiquated, absent-minded professor. He describes himself as unapologetically “old school.” He does not use a computer, preferring yellow legal pads. He does not text. He started reading emails on his phone only in the last couple of months. His answers in court wandered so frequently that he was often interrupted and implored to keep his focus by opposing counsel, as well as the presiding judge, Harlin D. Hale and even his own lawyer. (“Mr. LaPierre, it’s rare that I’m going to interrupt you, but stick to yeses and nos if possible,” one of his lawyers, Gregory Garman, interjected during his testimony.)

My husband is warm, caring, and creative. He’s also always been a bit of an absent-minded professor type: everything from forgetting to lock the front door to ruining a very expensive camera because he got overly excited about taking some pictures in (yes, IN) a lake. We’re hoping to start a family soon, and while I fully believe that he’ll be a wonderful dad (with a few foibles), there’s one dark fear I can’t shake: I am terrified there will be a situation where he leaves our baby in the back seat of a hot car. This is such an easy thing to do for even the most conscientious parent, and the news stories about it are utterly tragic. I know all the tricks about putting your wallet in the back seat, etc. But how do I share this fear without sounding overly paranoid? It’s not that I don’t trust him as a person … I just don’t trust his brain! Thanks for your advice.

"A Roland for an Oliver" nghĩa là gì?

"A Roland for an Oliver" = Roland dành cho Oliver (hai hiệp sĩ huyền thoại thời trung cổ, những người đã chiến đấu cho hoàng đế Charlemagne. Chiến công và sức mạnh của họ ngang nhau đến mức được coi là những thước đo sức mạnh quân sự cân xứng -> nghĩa (trong trận chiến) là cuộc trao đổi, trong đó thứ được cho đi có giá trị và sức mạnh ngang bằng với thứ nhận được.

Ví dụ
She trades gracefulness for brute (hung ác, tàn bạo) force, and visually it’s a Roland for an Oliver.

For the sake of simplicity in this breakdown, we'll consider a Roland for an Oliver—for now.

Pashinyan discussed the conversation with reporters saying that the discussion centered around exchange of captives—or prisoners of war—for which Baku has proposed a Roland for an Oliver of prisoners being held captives on both sides.

"Have an itchy palm" nghĩa là gì?

"Have an itchy palm" = có bàn tay bị ngứa -> nghĩa là mong được nhận hối lộ/tiền; tham lam, tham nhũng.

Ví dụ
Someone in Tuggeranong should have an itchy palm by now after scoring a division one win in Monday's Lotto draw.

There are so many superstitions (mê tín dị đoan) about when someone has an itchy palm, especially an itchy left palm. Old wives' tales and many cultures believe that an itchy left palm means that you are about to have a great financial fortune. The origins of the left-hand palm itching date back to the Saxons in England.

Having doled out so much in cash and kind to return to the assemblies, the legislators can't be realistically expected to exhibit a particular disdain (khinh bỉ) for money – few others placed in similar circumstances would demonstrate. This doesn't mean that parliamentarians by and large have an itchy palm. What it means is that given the role money plays in every election, it is difficult to resist the temptation of a monetary reward if the stakes are raised high. Remember it’s a world of ordinary mortals, not of the gods.

"He who gives fair words feeds you with an empty spoon" nghĩa là gì?

"He who gives fair words feeds you with an empty spoon" = người nói lời hay mớm bạn ăn bằng cái thìa trống không -> nghĩa là nói về điều tích cực, đầy hy vọng thì thường không thật, không chỉ đúng về điều gì sẽ xảy ra trong tương lai.

Ví dụ
Never believe in what they say because he who gives fair words feeds you with an empty spoon.

He said that the economy won't be affected by the covid-19, but he who gives fair words feeds you with an empty spoon.

My boss's over optimistic (quá lạc quan) and always give us great words to encourage us during this challenging time. Anyway, he who gives fair words feeds you with an empty spoon.

"How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time" nghĩa là gì?

"How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time" = bạn ăn voi như thế nào? Ăn từng miếng một -> nghĩa là hỏi bạn hoàn thành mục tiêu lớn đó như thế nào? Trả lời là theo từng quy trình nhỏ, từng bước một.

Ví dụ
Clark said he had a lot of time to think about his priorities and goals when he was running for office and using the old adage, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time,” he created a drawing of an elephant with pieces of the elephant sectioned off for each of his goals.

So, the fact that Riley is now rated as high as the fourth best coach in college football is hardly something to sneeze at. But could he actually climb even higher in the years ahead? The easy answer is, sure he can so long as he continues to win at Oklahoma at the same rate he has in compiling 45 total wins against eight losses and averaging 11 wins in his first years on the job. The popular phrase, “How do you eat an elephant” One bite at a time,” is probably the best way — or at least the most reasonable way — for the Oklahoma head coach to move up even higher in the coaching rankings.

Next I ring my mother to check that she didn’t die in the night, then it’s time to start work. I repair to The Room of Pain (the spare bedroom), switch on the computer, light a candle and ‘begin’. And by ‘begin’, I mean, stare at the screen and marvel at my hubris (xấc xược, ngạo mạn). How did I ever think I could write a book. A whole book! The wisdom of my friend Posh Kate, comes to mind: ‘How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!’ All this talk of eating and biting reminds me of food so I go downstairs and eat a protein bar, which is chocolate-flavoured fakery repackaged as something virtuous. Nevertheless, I enjoy it. I neglect to input it into my app.

Many of the new biologics (sinh vật học) in the process of development are for indications that are dominated by small molecules and have a broad patient population. This means that biologics could make inroads into a number of non-traditional biologic disease (bệnh) areas in the near future and it could benefit from improved therapeutic (phép chữa bệnh) efficacy. In addition to that, this creates room for the biosimilar industry to expand.

Citroen plans to start making a new crossover (dòng xe SUV thân rộng) model in China in a first attempt by its parent Stellantis NV to make inroads into the world’s biggest auto market.

With the large oil and gas market Nigeria has, these companies will seek to make inroads into Nigeria under the AfCFTA regime (chế độ).

A drug dealer who repeatedly sold crack cocaine and heroin was so taken in by an undercover police officer he asked him to help him do a "moonlight flit".

The malicious (nham hiểm) Miss O'Brien is going to do a moonlight flit in the very first scene, leaving Lady Grantham to confront the dismaying prospect of lacing her own stays.

The little bird returns to the post and looks around to check the world is as it left it, before repeating the catch, as if for the first time, every time. Next week, next month, soon, it will do a moonlight flit and vanish (biến mất), returning to another fence far away.

"Like an owl in an ivy bush" = như con cú dưới bụi cây thường xuân (nơi thích thú của cả chim cú và Bacchus, vị thần rượu của người La Mã)-> nghĩa là cái nhìn lơ đãng, đờ đẫn do say rượu.

Ví dụ
“He looks like an owl in an ivy bush”; frequently said of a person with a large frizzled wig, or a woman whose hair is dressed a-la-blowze.

A woman wearing a blue denim pinafore (cái tạp dề) and pink face mask sat on the ground at the port, like an owl in an ivy bush, one hand clutching a fence, waiting for her son.

In “Kinetta,” there is no bottom to the depths of debasement these people will go. But even when the characters are degrading themselves, like when the maid allows the voyeuristic (dòm ngó, tò mò tọc mạch) cop to rip up her dress and watch her writhe (quằn quại) on the floor like an owl in an ivy bush, they’re in control.

"Maroon on an island" nghĩa là gì?

"Maroon (one) on an island" -> nghĩa là bỏ mặc ai trên đảo hoang.

Ví dụ
X-Men fans will remember the original Dark Riders were acolytes (người theo hầu, cấp dưới) of Apocalypse. Their name was up for grabs after Magneto decisively defeated them, marooned them on an island, then blew up the island in 2016's Uncanny X-Men #5.

Readers of the Watchmen graphic novel will remember exactly how this plan was orchestrated: Veidt had kidnapped writers, artists, and creators, marooned them on an island, and set them to work building the squid–which he would then combine with vague (mơ hồ) teleportation technology and drop on Manhattan. In the graphic novel, the plan succeeds, and it appears both the U.S. and Soviets initiate early-stage peace talks.

Caity Lotz made her DC Comics debut in the second season of Arrow as Sara Lance, the love interest of Oliver Queen who seemingly died during the accident that marooned him on an island, making it a major twist that she had survived the ordeal. In the years since her debut, Sara became known as the White Canary, using her physical abilities to take down criminals. The character's subsequent journey saw her death and ultimate resurrection, making her no stranger to supernatural (siêu nhiên) events. The upcoming season of DC's Legends of Tomorrow will see the character undergo a major change, as it will finally deliver White Canary a superpower.

Neither Russia nor the US has commented on Lukashenko's assertions (xác nhận). The Belarus strongman has been in power since 1994 and claimed a landslide victory in the 2020 presidential election ruled fraudulent by the opposition and Western countries.

"Not let catch doing" nghĩa là gì?

"Not let (someone) catch (someone) doing (something)" -> nghĩa là không để ai bắt/thấy ai đó đang làm điều không được phép.

Ví dụ
You could eat all you wanted, but don't let her catch you in her kitchen for a midnight snack.

You don’t want to argue with Mrs. Terry. She’s spent 33 years teaching students at Morristown West to debate. Suzanne Terry will help you find your voice. She’ll defend your right to make it heard. But don’t let her catch you disrespecting someone — especially yourself. You don’t want to act a fool on one of the 20 or so trips you take each year with her debate team.

Don’t let him catch you flush or he will KNOCK. YOU. OUT. Tremendous hitting power and has put some really good ball carriers flat on their backs. Takes strong angles, although his tackle radius can be somewhat tempered by his lack of reach and he needs frame clean to finish with authority.

"Offer one cannot refuse" nghĩa là gì?

"Offer (one) cannot refuse" = đề nghị không thể từ chối (được Mario Puzo đặt ra trong cuốn tiểu thuyết Bố già năm 1969 của ông và được phổ biến trong bộ phim chuyển thể cùng tên của Francis Ford Coppola năm 1972) -> nghĩa là lời đề nghị có tính đe dọa, nếu từ chối sẽ gặp hậu quả lớn, nguy hiểm.

Ví dụ
“I am one of the unusual males who just can’t stand golf, so there’s no prospect of retiring to the golf course.” He hopes to travel and write and to spend more time with a grandson who shares his passion for history. “He called me up one day when he was in kindergarten. He was 5, and he said, ‘Will you take me to Mt. Vernon for my birthday?’ and I said that’s an offer one cannot refuse.”

An offer one cannot refuse? The promoter group has decided to raise the number of equity shares of Vedanta to be acquired in the open offer to 651mn (earlier 371.75mn), representing 17.5% (earlier 10%) of equity shares, at a revised price of Rs 235 (earlier Rs 160). The revised offer represents a premium of 4% to the CMP, a better deal for investors than the earlier offer price that implied a discount of 13% to the CMP then. That said, the fragmented nature of shareholding may affect tendering of shares nevertheless. The last date for upward revision of offer price was March 19.

To borrow a line from cinematic lore, Matthew McCurley has an offer one cannot refuse. McCurley, you see, used to be an actor. His defining moment came 25 years ago, in October of 1994, when the movie “Little Giants” debuted in theaters. McCurley played the role of Nubie, the nerdiest kid on a team with no shortage of nerds. Except he did not even play. No, Nubie was something of an assistant coach, famous for dialing up the immortal play “The Annexation of Puerto Rico” with the help of none other than John Madden.

"Open-door policy" nghĩa là gì?

"Open-door policy" = chính sách mở cửa -> nghĩa là chính phủ khuyến khích, ủng hộ nhập cư, du lịch, trao đổi thương mại, đầu tư nước ngoài.

Ví dụ
NATO has an open door policy, but Ukraine unlikely to walk through it any time soon, German officials say amid Donbass escalations.

You see, in my house, there is an open-door policy. Literally, my garage door is a revolving door all throughout the evenings and weekends when we are home. Any of these babies in my neighborhood are welcome at any time.

One of those has been an open door policy to not only his office but the Gamecock offensive meeting rooms to give players a glimpse behind the curtain, so to speak, and a chance to see how coaches are evaluating practice as it goes. “All comers can come up there. It’s amazing how much they can learn in that environment,” Satterfield said. “They can see how you’re working and watching the tape and how they fit in. Slowly but surely it turns into us the players and you the coaches to we, the South Carolina Gamecocks.” He’s not sure if other coaches do it or the frequency of it across college football but wanted to do it at South Carolina because it helps bring guys closer together.

"Pocket an affront" nghĩa là gì?

"Pocket an affront" = nuốt nhục -> nghĩa là cam chịu/chấp nhận sự khinh thường, lăng mạ mà không hề tức giận.

Ví dụ

When something like that housing situation is presented as a resource issue for your scrappy (chắp vá, vụn, rời rạc) arts nonprofit, you're put in a position of having to pocket an affront or cede (nhượng lại) the opportunity to someone else.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had to pocket an affront when he was forced to apologise for the inconvenience caused to local commuters and traffic owing to the big banners and hoardings installed in Pune’s Kothrud by local party politicians to welcome his Mahajanadesh Yatra on Sunday. This didn’t go down well with Fadnavis at all.
