"What makes you tick" nghĩa là gì?

"What makes someone tick" -> nghĩa là nguồn cảm hứng, động viên con người.

Ví dụ
To date, Mutebi, three months shy of six years at Lugogo, was the longest serving coach in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League over the last 10 years. But what makes him tick? NTV Weekend Sport sat down with him to find out.

Just what makes Kellen Mond who he is? We asked him during an appearance (xuất hiện) on The SB Nation NFL Show and found out exactly what makes him tick. He’s an impressive young signal-caller and even has a message for whatever team winds up picking him.

It’s amazing the research the teams do on each prospect (toàn cảnh). Everything from his childhood to upbringing to his views. They want to know inside and out what makes him tick, what he’s all about, what he’s like off the field, on the field, practice habits, weight room habits. That’s been something that a lot of NFL teams have been inquiring about: Can he play corner? Can he play nickel? Can he play safety?

The orator (người diễn thuyết) had been accused of being a serial cross-party (đa đảng) candidate during the interview session with a presenter, which he boldly clarifies in simple terms by pointing out what makes him tick as a political strategist.

"The smart money is on" nghĩa là gì?

"The smart money is on (someone/ something)" -> nghĩa là khôn ngoan nếu đặt cược, đầu tư tiền vào ai, thứ gì.

Ví dụ
Smart money is on a win by the home team in this game.

Trust me, the smart money is on Jill. She always finds a way to come out on top.

Like Ontario, Nova Scotia has adopted some very aggressive (năng nổ) public-health measures, including school closures. At this point, however, the smart money is on students in Halifax returning to class before students in Toronto do.

It seems inconceivable (không thể tưởng tượng được) that the company hasn’t broken through 70M or more by now, so the smart money is on Apple keeping quiet not through embarrassment (ngượng nghịu), but because it wants to keep the number to itself for commercial reasons.

"Too much like hard work" nghĩa là gì?

"Too much like hard work" -> nghĩa là công việc, hoạt động cần quá nhiều công sức.

Ví dụ
Just quit if you can’t be bothered. It’ll save us having to worry about what other teams are doing, which surely can have no relevance (liên quan) now. Feels like actually qualifying for the Champions League is too much like hard work. Much better to have it handed to you on a plate, eh?

Earlier this year, the presenter gave a similar answer when asked on The Graham Norton Show why he's never been on Strictly, saying: "It's too much like hard work."

If surfing or swimming sound too much like hard work, then we recommend stand-up paddleboarding (chèo ván). There are loads of bodies of water all over the country that are ideal for it.

If 700 pages and a two-hour documentary both seem too much like hard work, Piketty’s argument is simple: the return on capital is greater than economic growth, increasing inequality (bất thường). Many economists disagree, though.

"Talk shop" nghĩa là gì?

"Talk shop" -> nghĩa là trò chuyện công việc với đồng nghiệp khi không ở chỗ làm.

Ví dụ
It was an intimate (thân mật) dinner at somebody’s home, and later when I got to know him better, I realised he would have seen it as inappropriate to talk shop at a social gathering.

It shouldn't be long before the publisher is ready to talk shop about FIFA 22 and its fall slate of releases, which will include the long-awaited reveal of Battlefield 6. News about the next Madden and NHL entries is also bound to begin rolling out in the months ahead.

Welcome to another (now rare) edition of Bleach Social! For those so are unfamiliar (không quen) with the event, it’s basically a hub for us Texans fans to talk shop about where we’ll be watching a specific event. So where will you be watching the 2021 NFL Draft?

Things are finally getting back to normal: I’ve gotten my second Pfizer shot; automakers are slowly beginning to host launch events where dozens of car journalists (nhà báo) come together to test a new vehicle; and, most importantly, those journalists can all sit (outside, for now) and eat dinner together and talk shop.

"Take unawares" nghĩa là gì?

"Take unawares" -> nghĩa là gây bất ngờ vì không nghĩ nó sẽ xảy ra.

Ví dụ
“The state government is not prepared to restart (khởi động lại) the economy. We pray this does not cost us when the pandemic is over. But the way we are going now, we may maybe take unawares,” he added.

The armed herders (nguời chăn gia súc) between the ages of 18 to 28 years  not only intimidate and overawe their victims, who they usually take unawares, they command them when they invade their homes  to prepare meals for them (kidnappers).

Beautiful wedding! Erm… BN , I am not sure about the new look of the blog. Probably because I was take unawares. But the pictures seem clearer. Love BN all the way! 🙂

Chaos reigned at K-Area lightpoints and other entry points to Dhakoli on Tuesday after police barred public entry in and out of the area. Locals were taken unawares as the Mohali administration orders of Dhakoli being declared a containment (chính sách ngăn chặn) zone came on Monday night.

"Throw money away" -> nghĩa là 'ném tiền qua cửa sổ', lãng phí tiền bạc.

Ví dụ
Otherwise, businesses throw money away every time they accept a credit card payment.

I know Steve will support me wherever I want to go, but he also knows that I won’t throw money away stupidly.

"I was a poor man when I came to this country, and I don't like to throw money away, especially thousands, hundreds of thousands."

"When you enter a club it is to invest. What we are not going to do is throw money away. I am not going to promise to bring Messi or Ronaldo because it is unrealistic."

"Let's take it offline" nghĩa là gì?

"Let's take it offline" -> nghĩa là hãy bàn chuyện đó sau; hãy bàn riêng chuyện đó với tôi.

Ví dụ
If an attendee tries to “hijack” (chiếm đoạt) the meeting by bringing up something not on the agenda, someone is likely to say, “This isn’t scheduled, so let’s take it offline” or “People! A little discipline, please!”

A further 41 per cent think that ‘What’s the red thread?’ is code for ‘What’s the risk?’ when in fact it means ‘What is the consistent (cố định) theme?’ Another two in five (42 per cent) believe ‘let’s take it offline’ means ‘let’s discontinue (tạm ngừng) this email conversation and continue it face-to-face’ when it actually means ‘Let’s discuss that after the meeting in private’.

Davey cites the oft-used “let’s take it offline” phrase used by countless employees when they don’t really want to dig (đào bới) deeper into the issue at that moment for fear of more conflict.

Anyway… if you want to carry on discussing things like vendor market share, web hosting and domain names then I am willing to talk to you, but let’s take it offline – this article is about malware (phần mềm độc hại) for Linux desktops and laptops, just for a bit of interest.

"Take the bloom off" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Liana Mikah on Unsplash

"Take the bloom off" -> nghĩa là sự kiện/buổi lễ vỡ hoặc không còn hấp dẫn.

Ví dụ
A year spent wearing masks, staying indoors, and staring at screens can take the bloom off of the rosiest of roses. So it makes sense that now that lockdowns are lifting and many parts of the country are inching toward a return to more normal social interactions (tương tác) a certain group of service providers is seeing business boom.

But if you’re interested, you should go soon. The McLaughlin family, who owns the Gold Rush-era ranch, warned that rain next week could take the bloom off the annual show.

Even before the epidemic, indications of a deflation (lạm phát) in the real estate bubble in China, and severe issues with the banking system were posed to take the bloom off air travel growth.

Spring came early in Richmond County, but that didn’t take the bloom off the foliage (hoa lá) at Augusta National Golf Club. White-flowered dogwoods lined parts of the No. 11 fairway. An array of blooming azaleas (cây khô) put a colorful glow behind No. 13.
