Phi hành gia bỏ lại... cứt trên Mặt trăng,

With the Apollo 11 moon landing (đáp xuống mặt trăng), astronauts took that microbial (vi trùng, vi khuẩn) life to the most extreme environment it has ever been in. Which means the human feces (phân, cứt) on the moon — along with bags of urine (nước tiểu), food waste, vomit (bãi nôn), and other waste that also might contain microbial life — represents a natural, though unintended, experiment (thí nghiệm).

The question the experiment will answer: How resilient (phục hồi) is life in the face of the brutal (khắc nghiệt) environment of the moon? And for that matter, if microbes can survive on the moon, can they survive interstellar travel (du hành giữa các vì sao), making them capable of seeding life across the universe, including on places like Mars?

"Do not let the sun go down on your anger" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Christin Hume on Unsplash

"Do not let the sun go down on your anger" = đừng để mặt trời lặn khi bạn còn giận dữ -> hãy luôn thay đổi, cải thiện tình hình trước khi kết thúc một ngày, đừng đi ngủ khi bản thân còn tức giận.

Ví dụ
Jesus’ emphasis on forgiveness (sự tha thứ) shows his awareness that an unresolved quarrel (tranh cãi) ruins our ability to pray and that failure to reconcile (hòa giải) quickly can bury a conflict in our psyche (tâm lý). The author of Ephesians offers the same insight: “Do not let the sun go down on your anger” (4:26).

Many a time, the angry one is the right one. Unfortunately, if they don’t manage their anger properly, they become the wrong one. Little wonder the Bible (Kinh Thánh) warns that one should do all they can not to let the sun go down on their anger. When anger persists (kéo dài), its effects are terrible. Like a mighty wind, it destroys everything in its way.

When two individuals come together, we bring in our own personalities (tính cách) and perspectives (quan điểm). It creates more fun and joy when we have different perspectives. The various perspectives mould us into a better couple, and also help us understand God's wonderful creation and everyone's uniqueness. Arguments (tranh cãi) are inevitable (không thể tránh khỏi), but that's when we need to remember, "In your anger do not sin (phạm lỗi). Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry."

"Not on my watch" nghĩa là gì?

đừng tựa lên đồng hồ của anh chứ... Photo by Angelina Litvin on Unsplash.

"Not on my watch" = đừng hòng xảy ra trong lúc tôi canh chừng.

Daughter: I'm going to dye (nhuộm) my hair like a rainbow (cầu vồng) and get a nose piercing (xỏ mũi)!
Mum: Not on my watch!

“To our neighbors (hàng xóm) in Illinois who hear the news around the country and worry that this war on women is coming to Illinois, I say, not on my watch,” Kelly Cassidy, a Democrat (người theo Đảng Dân chủ) in the Illinois House of Representatives (Hạ viện Hoa Kỳ), said in chamber (nội các) debate (bàn luận) on Tuesday. “To the people in Missouri and Alabama and Georgia and Kentucky and Mississippi and Ohio, I say, not on my watch.”

He said he was terminating (chấm dứt) Sharkey’s $5,000-a-month lobbying (vận động hành lang) contract (hợp đồng) immediately (ngay lập tức) “for cause,” instead of utilizing (tận dụng) a 90-day separation provision (điều khoản) in their agreement (thỏa thuận). “Do you think that you could not perform (làm việc) and take a position (giữ chức vụ) that our agreement allows you to bilk (lừa) my company for three months? Not on my watch,” Scyocurka wrote.

"Seeing is believing" nghĩa là gì?

Hay thật!!! Photo courtesy: Morgan

"Seeing is believing" = có thấy mới tin.

For some of us the world can sometimes be gray (xám xịt), but as the saying goes, seeing is believing.

I saw it last night and I can tell you that seeing is believing. It is utterly (cực kỳ) fantastic (tuyệt vời). It is not even close (không hề giống) to the advertisements and billboards (biến quảng cáo). Being there in person makes you realize how amazing it is. You really must go and see it.

"So people who have never been exposed (tiếp xúc) to the internet are getting broadband (lên mạng) for the first time, seeing images, memes, and videos. And our [brain] says seeing is believing." Ironically (mỉa mai thay), technology is the poison (thuốc độc) and the cure (thuốc chữa) for misinformation. While it allows people to fabricate (bịa đặt) and distribute (rải) falsehoods (sai lệch) to large audiences, it can also help with fact-checking (xác minh) and debunking (lật tẩy) fake news material.

"Where there's a will, there's a way" nghĩa là gì?

Sắp được về nhà rồi. Photo courtesy: Maximilian Paradiz
"Where there's a will, there's a way" = nơi nào có ý chí, nơi đó có con đường. Hiện nay, họ có câu hài là "there's a will, there's a relative", bạn nào hiểu được nào? :)

Ví dụ
John was lost in the jungle (rừng) and thought he could never get back home, but thinking about his family gave him the strength (sức mạnh) to climb a tall tree and see a way out (đường thoát), which just goes to show that when there is a will there is a way.

The seventh annual (thường niên) Forbes Women’s Summit kicked off (bắt đầu) in New York with words by national youth poet (thơ) laureate (người nhận giải) Amanda Gorman: “Where there’s a will, there’s a woman. And where there is a woman, there is always a way.”

“I feel like when there’s a will, there’s a way, and this could have happened, and it should have happened,” Stanley Fritz, Citizen Action of New York Campaign Manager, said. “And we’re going to go another year with black and brown people (người da màu) suffering from the failed War on Drugs (Cuộc chiến chống Ma túy).”

"A man of the hour" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Johanna Buguet on Unsplash.

'A man of the hour' nghĩa là người đang được chúc mừng, tôn vinh, tuyên dương, ngưỡng mộ vì thành tích/chiến thắng mới đạt/giành được.

Ví dụ
Boyes was beloved by those who played for him or coached (được huấn luyện) under him, including football, where he was on the Hornets coaching staff for 12 seasons (mùa bóng). He was a main draw at any awards banquet he attended and he was a man of the hour when he ceremonially turned on the lights for Sac State’s first night game on campus in 2016.

As a man who ordered the murder of at least 19 people and spent more than two decades running one of America’s most deadly crime gangs (tội phạm), James “Whitey” Bulger is not someone most politicians (chính trị gia) would want an endorsement from. But the notoriously ruthless (tàn nhẫn) Boston crime lord was, it seems, a big supporter of Donald Trump. The gangster – who was murdered, aged 89, in prison last year – praised the US president in a series of letters written from his cell. He called the entrepreneur-turned-commander-in-chief a “man of the hour”, and said he admired how he was “tough and fights back instead of bowing” to critics.

- an ninh và chủ quyền quốc gia

...since the Civil War, the United States has had a general prohibition (lệnh cấm) on the intersection (giao nhau) between banking and commerce (thương mại). Such a barrier (rào cản) has been reinforced (tăng cường, gia cố, củng cố) many times, such as in 1956 with the Bank Holding Company Act and in 1970 with an amendment (sửa đổi) to that law during the conglomerate craze (cơn điên rồ/điên loạn). Both times, Congress blocked banks from going into nonbanking businesses through holding companies, because Americans historically didn’t want banks competing with their own customers. Banking and payments is a special business, where a bank gets access to intimate (riêng tư, bí mật) business secrets of its customers. As one travel agent told Congress in 1970 when opposing the right of banks to enter his business, “Any time I deposited checks from my customers,” he said, “I was providing the banks with the names of my best clients.”

Imagine Facebook’s subsidiary Calibra knowing your account balance and your spending, and offering to sell a retailer an algorithm (thuật toán) that will maximize (tối đa hóa) the price (giá bán hàng hóa) for what you can afford (có thể/có khả năng chi trả) to pay for a product. Imagine this cartel having this kind of financial visibility into not only many consumers, but into businesses across the economy. Such conflicts of interest are why payments and banking are separated from the rest of the economy in the United States.

"Wolf in sheep's clothing" nghĩa là gì?

Ơ em hiền thật mà 😃 Photo by Junbeom Ahn on Unsplash
'Wolf in sheep's clothing' = sói đội lốt cừu -> ám chỉ một người có vẻ ngây thơ, vô hại nhưng thực chất lại có tính xấu, hoặc nguy hiểm.

Ví dụ
The bill (dự luật) is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and it won’t just blow down (thổi bay, nổ tung) one or two houses. It will destroy (phá hủy/tàn phá) the entire (toàn bộ) housing market (thị trường nhà đất/nhà ở) in America’s biggest city.

Similar to “You Need To Calm Down”, Swift created a video filled to the brim (vành mũ) with famous faces and later received a GRAMMY award for Video of the Year. 34-year-old Perry famously wrote a response on Twitter stating “Beware of the wolf in sheep’s clothing” confirming (nhấn mạnh) to fans that she was, in fact, the subject of Swift’s wrath (sự tức giận).

One of the Prizes of the Day has to go to Abigail, Robert Buck’s Aquidneck 52 from Marion, MA. She sits first in Class A based on preliminary (sơ bộ, ban đầu) corrected time results. This is a 52-foot yawl (thuyền hai cột buồm) that was designed, built, and raced by the owner. The skipper (thuyền trưởng/đội trưởng) of Kinship, which stands second in Class A, calls Abigail, a nice design with a cold molded wooden hull (thân tàu), a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Mark Gabrielson, Abigail‘s navigator (hàng hải), said she is “just fast.”
