"Save room for" nghĩa là gì?

Chén nó! Photo by fu zhichao from Pexels

"Save room (for something)" nghĩa là giữ cho cái bụng rỗng để ăn được nhiều.

Ví dụ
It’s pizza. You can’t go wrong. But of course, you’ll want to save room for dessert. Anyone up for Andy’s Custard in its 1950s sock-hop (điệu nhảy của giới trẻ) glory?

However you choose to fill up during your evening in town, you’ll want to save room for weekend brunch (bữa lửng) at Gravy, or, if you’re lucky, its Sunday barbecue in the summer.

We will get through it together. Establish (thiết lập) a routine. Workout in some form every day to release (giải phóng) your endorphins. Eat healthy to feel good. Always save room for dessert.

One of Hong Kong's top spots for authentic (đích thực) Spanish tapas, Pica Pica in Sheung Wan is another place where you can get a taste of this Basque classic. Served with a scoop of fruity sorbet (kem đá) to temper the cheesecake's richness, it's a dessert that you'll want to save room for even after a full on feast (tiệc).

Chung phòng có rất nhiều mặt tốt. Photo by cottonbro from Pexels

"Room together" = cùng phòng -> nghĩa là cùng chung một phòng ở (khách sạn, ký túc xá...). Động từ "room with" là ở chung phòng với ai.

Ví dụ
I had Michael Owen to start with and people always said we were chalk and cheese (hoàn toàn khác biệt), how did we room together?

“There’s something special about being in a room together,” he said. “God made us for community (cộng đồng), but we can at least connect online and still be there for one another.”

Their principal (hiệu trưởng) will read student names from a different room. Using "holographic technology," (công nghệ ba chiều) video editors will then edit the ceremony to make it appear as if everyone was in the same room together.

Brown got sick first and Robert became ill not long after. The couple from Piermont, New York, were both admitted (đưa vào) to the same hospital in hopes of sharing a room together. Robert was insistent on taking himself to the hospital as not to infect (lây nhiễm) anyone else, his son said.

"Room for doubt" = không gian chứa sự nghi ngờ -> nghĩa là vẫn còn tồn tại nghi vấn.

Ví dụ
He knew the question was coming, and when he got it, T.Y. Hilton didn't leave any room for doubt. He wants a contract extension (gia hạn).

Unless Webber reveals (tiết lộ) his proof (bằng chứng) that Ytuarte bears sole responsibility (chịu trách nhiệm) for the latest blunder (sai lầm), there is plenty of room for doubt.

Certainly the resultant report (báo cáo tổng hợp), as submitted, left no room for doubt on either side of the question, the details being documented in orderly array and plain (rõ ràng) language.

The research “explored the resident destination identity and tourist perceived image of Macau by demographic (nhân khẩu học), geographic (địa lý), and behavioural (hành vi) segments,” among 294 residents and 294 tourists and the results leave little room for doubt: when asked which of the two cultural heritages (di sản văn hóa) is most representative (đại diện) of Macau’s identity, the majority respond that it is the Portuguese one.

"Throne room" nghĩa là gì?

Nơi được chăm chút nhất nhà. Photo by Engin Akyurt from Pexels

"Throne room" không phải phòng của hoàng gia gì đâu, mà là nhà vệ sinh. "Throne" là tiếng lóng phổ biến của "toilet" (bồn cầu).

Ví dụ
If you’ve got a youngster who seems to constantly “forget” to wash up after a stint (phần việc) in the throne room, this might just be the attention-grabbing reminder (nhắc nhở) they need.

You ever look at your toilet brush (chổi cọ) in disgust and resentment (oán giận)? How's a dirty used-up brush sitting in your throne room? You clean your bathroom but then you put that sucker down in its place and it's just like, mocking (chế giễu) you. It's never truly immaculate (tinh khiết). Never knowing true cleanliness.

To salute (chào mừng) the 1967 roots of the original building, interior decorators (trang trí nội thất) created a ’67 atmosphere with the in-room and lobby furniture (đồ đạc) and the wallpaper in the bright bathrooms. Sitting on the throne, you can read the walls, which are finished with newspaper pages that describe many of the city’s highlights during Canada’s centennial year .

"Leave the room" nghĩa là rời khỏi phòng (để đỡ ngại, hoặc đi vệ sinh...)

Ví dụ
My husband and I were not allowed to leave the room after this. We were left in what seemed like an island.

It doesn’t take an All-American (đặc kiểu Mỹ) academic to know when to make himself scarce (khan hiếm). “I’d make an excuse to leave the room,” Keiter-Charles joked.

Scott apologized to their daughters, Cooper says, before forcing them to leave the room, where she says he repeatedly beat and sexually assaulted (tấn công tình dục) her for hours.

The Padillas say check-in consisted (bao gồm) of a security check, health screening, a recitation (thuộc lòng) of the rules and paperwork. They leave the room for errands (việc vặt), medical appointments or just for a bit of fresh air. Curfew (giờ giới nghiêm) is 7 p.m. and temperatures are checked when people return.

"Engine room" nghĩa là gì?

Đoàn kết là sức mạnh. Photo by Retha Ferguson from Pexels

"Engine room" = buồng chứa động cơ, nhiên liệu (tàu, thuyền) -> ý chỉ người tài năng, chứa nhiều năng lượng và sức mạnh, truyền cảm hứng cho mọi người.

Ví dụ
The former Reds midfielder (tiền vệ) believes Jurgen Klopp needs some extra guile (mưu mẹo) to add to the graft that he possesses in a hard-working engine room.

With the International Monetary Fund forecasting (dự báo) Chinese economic growth to be a whopping 9.3pc next year (dependent on a vaccine for coronavirus), China will clearly be the engine room of global protein demand (nhu cầu).

Feminist solidarity (đoàn kết nữ quyền) right now is the ‘engine room,’ driving some of the most innovative (đổi mới) and needed action taking place today. Our movements are literally resourcing each other during this pandemic — with emergency funds (quỹ khẩn cấp), information provision, art, love, time, sharing of experience, documentation of impact, and more — sharing, connecting, analysing, strategising (chiến lược) and imagining new feminist realities more than ever before.

"Elbow room" = phòng khuỷu tay -> nghĩa là không gian đủ để di chuyển, xoay người với khoảng cách 1 khuỷu tay. Nghĩa khác là khả năng hành động, tự do làm theo ý muốn của một người.

Ví dụ
Mumbai, with over 20,000 cases, is the worst affected city in the country in terms of sheer (tuyệt đối) numbers. As the country enters in lockdown 4, the centre has given quite some elbow room to each state to decide on the relaxations.

The boardwalk (lối đi lại) was crowded Friday, but generally, there are family and friend groups together with space between the others. There are signs along the boardwalk reminding people to distance. There is plenty of elbow room on the beach.

The Gulf region’s need for a country like Turkey, with a high capacity (năng lực) and capability for sustainable production (sản xuất bền vững) and exports in various areas, from agriculture, food and machinery to services, is clear. It is saddening (đáng buồn), however, that they’re pursuing dangerous interests (lợi ích nguy hiểm) with countries, particularly the U.S., who don’t want to give Turkey any elbow room in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East and Africa. But they will pay a high price for this.

"Room at the top" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Robert Bye on Unsplash

"Room at the top" = phòng trên đỉnh -> nghĩa là cơ hội chiếm lĩnh vị trí cao trên bảng xếp hạng hoặc đứng vào tầng lớp cấp cao. "There is always room at the top" nghĩa là luôn có cơ hội thành công cho dù nhiệm vụ khó khăn như thế nào.

Ví dụ
People are always saying there's room at the top—except for those who are already there.

The first is an assumption (giả định) that there is only limited room at the top, that there is no point in educating everyone as far as their talents will take them because the economy (nền kinh tế) simply needs only a few who are trained for the top.

There might not be enough room at the top of the Ineos hierarchy (hệ thống phân cấp). Consider these factors: Froome’s age (35 in May), his career-threatening injuries (chấn thương) from a crash at the 2019 Critérium du Dauphiné, and the presence of Egan Bernal and Geraint Thomas, both Tour winners still under contract through 2021 and beyond.

Observers (giám sát viên) of the Japanese social and political scene (bối cảnh chính trị xã hội) are quick to produce dire predictions (dự đoán khủng khiếp) of what will happen to people's perceptions (nhận thức) of the openness and fairness of Japanese society as economic expansion (mở rộng kinh tế) slows down and as room at the top becomes more restricted (hạn chế).

Phòng giải trí điển hình. Photo by Mike McAllen

"Rumpus room" là phòng giải trí (của gia đình, thường ở tầng hầm).

Ví dụ
It also has a private courtyard (sân trong) off the master bedroom downstairs, and there’s a rumpus room in the kids wing which opens onto the pool.

The home includes two bathrooms. This one is located at the back of the home, which is up against a hill. In lieu of (thay cho) windows, it shares a skylight with the rumpus room.

And having previously run a popular children's indoor playground (sân chơi trong nhà) in New Plymouth, The Rumpus Room, for more than five years, turned out to be helpful in getting the book going, says Helen.

The first two eastern brown hatchlings (chim mới nở) were discovered when they slithered (trượt) their way into the family rumpus room, nestling into a towel that was being used to block bushfire smoke (chặn khói lửa).

"Wiggle room" nghĩa là gì?

"Wiggle room" có từ "wiggle" là ngọ nguậy. "Wiggle room" có nghĩa là không gian/thời gian/sự tự do mà bạn muốn để thay đổi ý định, linh hoạt trong thương lượng.

Ví dụ
With neither boxer on the hook for a mandatory (bắt buộc) title defense (bảo vệ danh hiệu) for their next fight, there remains wiggle room to go straight to a head-on collision (va chạm trực diện).

Rugby league (giải bóng bầu dục), soccer, union and other field sports all have more wiggle room due to the government's increased leniency (khoan dung) on outdoor activity but in the case of basketball, the ODBA is in a bit of a pickle (khó khăn).

Dr. Anthony Fauci, a key member of the White House coronavirus task force, said Thursday evening it's important to give governors (thống đốc) "wiggle room" on reopening (mở lại) their states, but cautioned (cảnh báo) they shouldn't "wiggle too much."

Companies that pay out less in dividends (cổ tức) than they earn in profits generally have more sustainable (bền vững) dividends. The lower the payout ratio (tỷ lệ chi trả), the more wiggle room the business has before it could be forced to cut the dividend.

"Smallest room in the house" nghĩa là gì?

"Smallest room in the house" nghĩa là cái phòng tắm/nhà vệ sinh ấy.

Ví dụ
I record (thu âm) in the smallest room of my house, with all doors and windows closed and the ceiling fan turned off.

Because bathrooms are usually the smallest room in the house, they are a great place to begin your home organising project.

Tibor Tusnady was in the "smallest room" of the house when he checked his winning lottery ticket and found out he was $16.4M richer.

One one side of the staircase is the smallest room in the house. While restoration (khôi phục) work was underway, crews thought they were going to find a wood-burning fireplace (lò sưởi) in the wall above the one in the dining room.

"Room-temperature IQ" nghĩa là gì?

"Room-temperature IQ" = IQ nhiệt độ phòng -> nghĩa là người có chỉ số thông minh chỉ tầm nhiệt độ phòng (khoảng 70 độ F và 21 độ C), thấp hơn chỉ số trung bình (100).

Ví dụ
Donald Trump is a big fat idiot. Ninety-nine point nine percent what comes out of his mouth is a lie. The other .1% is complete nonsense (vô nghĩa). His IQ hovers somewhere around room temperature.

They must think every American is as stupid as their left wing (cánh tả) supporters. Anyone with an IQ above room temperature would see through their BS. Looks like CDC might be a ‘covert’ agency of the left.

Who’s really to blame for this fine coronavirus mess? It would be easy to blame President Trump. You know, that boorish (thô lỗ), incompetent (kém cỏi), borderline illiterate (dốt nát), room temperature I.Q. snake oil pitchman (người bán quán).

Carter Page is a goofball (ngu ngốc) who never had any actual influence with the Trump campaign. On the contrary (ngược lại): he was nothing more than one of the five names that Trump hurriedly came up with after promising to reveal his “foreign policy (chính sách đối ngoại) team” in early 2016, at a time when no one in the foreign policy community with a room-temperature IQ wanted anything to do with Trump.

"Loiter over (something)" nghĩa là trì hoãn hoặc nán lại, chưa làm gì ngay.

Like the Predator and Reaper, the Fotros can carry weapons (vũ khí) and loiter over a battlefield (chiến trường) for as long as a day.

The gimbaled camera allows the operator (người điều khiển) to easily track both stationary (đứng im) and moving targets. ScanEagle vehicles can operate individually or in groups to loiter over trouble spots.

The flyover (máy bay biểu diễn) is also planning to loiter over the Syracuse area, and its hospitals, from about 2:31 to 2:40 p.m. The museum recommends looking to the skies about 10 minutes before the scheduled time in case there are any changes.

Now with Precision Guided Munitions, Armed UAVs with endurances (kéo dài) of more than 24 hours to loiter over a target area and scan/carryout surveillance (giám sát) of hostile (kẻ địch) movement and taking out a designated target using Artificial Intelligence (trí tuệ nhân tạo) / facial recognition (nhận dạng khuôn mặt) gives close support to the “boots on the ground”.

Có gì đó khả nghi ở đây. Photo by Brett Sayles from Pexels

"Loiter with intent" nghĩa là lảng vảng có chủ đích (kẻ có ý đồ trộm cắp chẳng hạn). Nghĩa khác là đứng nguyên một chỗ chờ đợi điều gì.

Ví dụ
Once social distancing and lockdowns start to be relaxed (nới lỏng) across the world, the virus may come back with renewed vigour (sức mạnh mới). Until such times as a vaccine is available and widely distributed (phân phối), we need to accept that Covid-19 may continue to loiter with intent.

Paudie, now 23, would go on to win All-Ireland junior medal (huy chương) and Sigerson Cup medals as well as claiming man-of-the-match as East Kerry won the county SFC this year and his talent was clear to the opposition (đối thủ), who double-marked him. However, that left David free to loiter with intent and he scored 3-3 in the first 20 minutes.

In May, police in Chillicothe, Ohio, arrested (bắt giữ) 10 men and women for loitering for the purpose of soliciting prostitution (dụ khách mại dâm); Parsippany, New Jersey, police arrested three women for loitering for the purpose of engaging in (tham gia) prostitution; and 21 men and women in Stockton, California, arrested on loitering with intent to solicit or soliciting sexual services for money.

"Loiter away one's time" nghĩa là đi la cà để giết thì giờ (cho qua giờ).

Ví dụ
In Nitella I promised myself an easy friend, with whom I might loiter away the day without disturbance (quấy rầy) or altercation (cãi nhau).

By some Gentlemen of Character, who are just come from Boston, I am informed (được thông báo), that the Officers loiter away their times in a most Scandalous (đáng xấu hổ) manner on their March from Boston to Peeks Kill.

They loiter away their time in apathy (thờ ơ), and live often at the expense of the institution (chi phí của tổ chức), while many economical concerns, and the necessary affairs of the house, might be done by such patients (bệnh nhân).

The two friends kept the secret of the Eyry to themselves for a little while, now and then visiting the old tower to rummage (lục lọi) among the lumber stored (kho chứa đồ kềnh càng) in the lower room, or to loiter away the afternoon in the windy solitudes (vắng vẻ) of the upper heights.

"Loiter around/about" nghĩa là lảng vảng, đứng quanh quẩn vô công rồi nghề.

Ví dụ
Head down, keep moving, get from A to B as quickly as possible and whatever you do don't loiter around, seemed to be the drill (kỷ luật) - and rightfully so as the country got to grips (nắm bắt) with the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite their dire warnings (cảnh báo nghiêm trọng) about the use of English terms it's actually pretty common to hear French people - especially younger ones - toss the odd (kỳ quặc) word of English into everyday chat and you will frequently hear a 'c'est cool' or 'le buzz' if you loiter around young French people for long enough.

Annuar added that if need be, the Kuala Lumpur mayor (thị trưởng) has agreed to facilitate (tạo điều kiện) by providing transit homes for those coming to work from outstation (tiền đồn) and in need of accommodation while they settle into the job. "Malaysians must be prepared to work hard, and not just loiter around doing nothing," he said.

Đừng bi kịch hóa vấn đề

shared from fb Anh Nguyen,

Either leave the situation, change the situation, or accept it. All else is madness.

Trường học đóng cửa lâu quá

em mang bầu mất rồi, chuyện ở nhật bản...
...Jikei Hospital in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, reports that it’s been seeing an increase in the number of junior high and high school students contacting its pregnancy consultation department.

“With their schools closed because of the coronavirus, many students are staying at home,” says Jikei vice president Ken Hasuda. “For some of them, this presents opportunities for sexual activity, which in some cases is leading to unplanned pregnancies.”

At first, it seems like teens staying at home should be giving them fewer opportunities to have sex, since it’s pretty much unheard of for Japanese school kids to live under the same roof as their crush (người yêu thầm nhớ trộm) (which is one of many ways real-life Japan is different from anime). The scenario Hasuda seems to be describing, though, is one in which the kids, with no on-campus classes to attend or after-school extracurricular activities to take part in, are home all day while their parents are periodically out of the house in the morning or afternoon for work or errands. That creates windows for one teen to sneak over to another’s house, into their bed, and still have time to get back home before any parents notice they have a visitor or missing kid.

Định vượt mặt Trump sao?

chương trình xét nghiệm virus do bill gates hậu thuẫn bị yêu cầu dừng lại, chờ xem xét/phê duyệt từ chính quyền liên bang...
An innovative coronavirus testing program in the Seattle area — promoted by billionaire Bill Gates and local public health officials as a way of conducting wider surveillance on the invisible spread of the virus — has been ordered by the federal government to stop its work pending additional reviews.

Researchers and public health authorities already had tested thousands of samples, finding dozens of previously undetected cases (các trường hợp trước đây ko phát hiện ra) in a program based on home test kits sent out to both healthy and sick people in the hope of conducting the kind of widespread monitoring that could help communities safely reopen from lockdowns.

But the research groups and the public health department of Seattle and King County, which had been operating under authorization from the state, was notified this week that it now needs approval directly from the federal government (phê chuẩn trực tiếp từ chính quyền liên bang). Officials with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration directed the partnership to cease (dừng) its testing and reporting until the agency grants further approval.

With the UK continuing to navigate the coronavirus pandemic and people forced to self-isolate and social distance, it's been a very long time since anyone has been able to set foot in a pub.

Nipping out for a cheeky (xấc láo, hỗn xược) Nando's and a pint (một vại bia) is a thing of the past (việc đã qua/xưa rồi).

But it doesn't have to be.

One man has taken matters into his own hands and created his very own pub in his back garden, inside his shed.

David Higby from Leigh-on-Sea in Essex has spent two years giving his 20-foot shed a makeover and finished his efforts just in time for lockdown.

"A matter of record" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Lee Campbell on Unsplash

"A matter of record" = vấn đề ghi chép -> nghĩa là điều đã được biết do được nói/tuyên bố công khai từ trước.

Ví dụ
It is a matter of record that local police, that is, Crime Branch is found to have miserably failed in tracing (theo dấu) out/apprehending/arresting Maulana Saad, despite lapse (sai sót) of considerable time and his photograph being published in electronic media.

It is a matter of record that the last time the world confronted (đối mặt) a pandemic on this scale, the so-called "Spanish influenza" (dịch cúm Tây Ban Nha), its first major wave hit in March, April and May of 1918.

But the price of this privilege is trusting an opaque (mờ đục, không rõ ràng) chamber of secrets to manage the entire world’s wealth. And in that dark chamber, there is, as a matter of record, not theory, so many generations of malfeasance (hành động phi pháp) and corruption and crime. It is inevitable when so much wealth is entrusted to closed institutions. Bitcoin solves that.

"Have had one's chips" có từ "chips" là một dụng cụ đánh bạc sử dụng trong các sòng bài, có hình dạng như đồng xu bằng nhựa. Cụm từ này nghĩa là bạn đang nằm trong thế khó, chết hoặc bị giết, thất bại hoặc bị đánh bại.

Ví dụ

If you have spent your money and used up all your tokens you have HAD YOUR CHIPS.

And where do you plan to go? Your cell, maybe? Because you're not just walking out of here. You've had your chips, my friend. Threatening women. Mutilating (làm tổn hại) animals. A proper bully (kẻ bắt nạt)!

Now, it looks to the public that it's one rule for the health Minister (Bộ trưởng Y tế) and another rule for them. So, don't you agree with me that Vaughan Gething has had his chips? And when are you going to remove him from the park bench and put him on the subs bench, where he belongs?

Woolloomooloo’s Old Fitzroy unveiled (công khai) its menu on May 6, and one of our favourite dishes, the hot-chip butty, has made the cut.

Dr Neil Buttery, a chef and food historian (nhà sử học) from Yorkshire, says there’s also a lot of regional politics (khu vực chính trị) when it comes to the chip butty, though it’s hard to pinpoint (xác định) minute details about its inception (bắt nguồn). This is a direct result, he tells me, of the fact that the very people who were making it first – “working class communities (cộng đồng) in the north of England” – “could not, and did not, write things down.”
