"Make odd bedfellows" nghĩa là gì?

Thế giới luôn ẩn chứa điều bất ngờ. Photo by Cameron Casey from Pexels

"Make odd bedfellows" nghĩa là sự kết hợp không ngờ tới, biến thù thành bạn, biến lạ thành quen, cùng chiến tuyến.

Ví dụ
Skaters (người chơi trượt ván) can drop by Alternative Missions, where Bible study and skateboarding (trượt ván) make odd bedfellows.

But though the rejection (bác bỏ) of Scientism makes odd bedfellows, it somehow manages to make them in very substantial (đáng kể) numbers.

Because science and religion make odd bedfellows whose offspring (kết quả) is usually malformed (dị dạng), let's keep them properly separated as we summarize the various widely accepted answers to the most basic questions of existence: What is this universe?

Marines (thủy quân lục chiến) and marriage make odd bedfellows. Marines are always at a loss to picture a comrade (đồng chí) in arms as wedded. It just doesn't fit the mental picture we hold of each other or ourselves. That doesn't make us bad family men nor I suppose good ones either, but we are always surprised to learn when one of our numbers has a softer side.

"At odds over" nghĩa là gì?

"At odds over" nghĩa là mâu thuẫn, xung đột về một lý do cụ thể.

Ví dụ
In their attempt to bring some order into the chaos left by the collapse of the Third Reich (Đệ tam Đế chế) , the wartime Allies soon found themselves at odds over what kind of new Germany they hoped to build on the ruins of the old.

The “Vietnam question” intensified (làm gia tăng) the German dilemma (tiến thoái lưỡng nan) of how to pursue the quest of unity (thống nhất) when its major allies (đồng minh), Washington and Paris, were at odds over the conflict in Southeast Asia.

To note that women are at odds over abortion (phá thai) is not a novel (mới lạ) observation, nor is it controversial (gây tranh cãi) to point out the prominence (nổi bật) of women in advocacy (ủng hộ) for and against keeping abortion legal (Luker 1984; Ginsburg 1989).

This book does not begin from the debatable premise (tiền đề gây tranh cãi) that there is a “crisis,” across the Atlantic but rather from the indisputable (không thể bàn cãi) observation that these allies have recently been at odds over a long and consistent series of issues.

"The odds are against one" = lợi thế chống lại -> nghĩa là không còn lợi thế, gặp bất lợi, khó khăn.

Ví dụ
The odds are against us, but we are going to do this.

The odds are against the cycling age, too. Employments elsewhere are always at risk. So, the mind should race the feet.

The couples sharing in this book started off wrong; the odds were against them. Their marriages were ill-timed (không đúng lúc). Preparation was poor and maturity (trưởng thành) was low, with little foundation for a secure future.

The odds are against them from the day they meet but Ivan's determination (quyết tâm) and Lara's love surmount (vượt qua) all obstacles including their language barrier (bất đồng ngôn ngữ). It is a tale of high adventure and a daily challenge to the bonds that hold them together.

"It makes no odds" nghĩa là gì?

Các vị làm gì thì làm, cũng chẳng ảnh hưởng đến cô ấy. Photo by Godisable Jacob from Pexels

"It makes no odds (to somebody/something)" nghĩa là không quan trọng, không ảnh hướng gì, không khác biệt mấy.

Ví dụ
It makes no odds whether it's a love letter or a protest letter.

No stock-breeder (làm nghề chăn nuôi) acts upon the principle that it makes no odds whether you breed (gây giống) from good strains (giống) or bad ones.

I should not have been so if I hadn't been like this, Doctor, but now I am out of the running for good, it makes no odds to me either way. If ever you see him again, you tell him I said I was glad.

No inconvenience (bất tiện) will result, if the Orphan's Court and the administrator (quản trị viên) their duty. The lands will certainly sell better, for being discharged from Wens; and it makes no odds to the judgment creditors (chủ nợ) by what person they are sold, provided they are sold fairly, and the proceeds faithfully applied.

"At odds with the world" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng đắm chìm quá sâu vào những cảm xúc tiêu cực. Photo by Limuel Gonzales from Pexels

"At odds with the world/oneself" = mâu thuẫn với thế giới -> nghĩa là khó chịu, không hài lòng, bất mãn về cuộc sống hoặc với chính mình.

Ví dụ
When you are perplexed (lúng túng) or in turmoil (bối rối) about your relationship with a mate, child, parent, sibling, or friend, it can be difficult to ignore. Yet when you are puzzled by or at odds with yourself, it may be easier to look the other way.

But this account is at odds with what we know from biology about the sequencing (sự sắp xếp) of life forms, the age of the earth, and the struggle of life against life. Genesis (nguồn gốc), however, is not at odds with the real world; evolution (tiến hóa) is.'

Do you feel wiser or less of a person? The chances are that whereas you're wise enough to know what's happening to your body, the changes have left you feeling more than a little at odds with yourself. Perhaps, you're wondering who you are and worrying why you feel so awkward and unsure about your looks and personality.

"Tug your forelock" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: David Clode on Unsplash

"Tug your forelock" = xõa tóc xuống (hàm ý việc ngả mũ) -> nghĩa là thể hiện/bày tỏ lòng tôn trọng với người có địa vị xã hội cao hơn.

Ví dụ
Not to worry Davey – I will enjoy watching Ingerland getting poorer by the year as the effects (ảnh hưởng) of Brexshit work their way through. Make sure you tug your forelock to your betters. & hey when I visit the Uk – do make yourself known – I may if you ask nicely toss (quăng, ném) you a Euro.

Don’t worry about his title. In fact you shouldn’t worry about his world at all at all but remember his face and be sure to tug your forelock or lift your hat if he should pass you by! He belongs (thuộc về) to that group known as your betters!

Even if all it means is having to tug your forelock to every Whitecloak who comes along, do you want to live that way? Your children? You’re at the mercy of the Trollocs, the mercy of the Whitecloaks, and the mercy of anybody with a grudge (miễn cưỡng). As long as one has a hold on you, all three do. You’re hiding in the cellar, hoping one rabid (dại) dog will protect you from another, hoping the rats don’t sneak out in the dark and bite you.

"Weigh your options" nghĩa là gì?

Nhiêu ký đây? Photo courtesy: FrannyDJ Dean

"Weigh one's options" có từ weigh là cân nhắc, xem xét cẩn thận -> cụm từ này nghĩa là cân nhắc, tính toán, xem xét cẩn thận các khả năng hoặc lựa chọn.

Ví dụ
I’ve been weighing my options for the last year, as I am really not sure what kind of career I want to have in the future.

Weigh your options before your babies are born and decide whether you are going to buy separate or the same cot (cũi em bé) when you take them home. Considering that they’ve been in the womb (bụng me; tử cung) together for so long, they may feel more secure and sleep better together.

While the plans are in early stages, it remains unclear which specific provisions (điều khoản) it may include as US President Donald Trump continues to weigh his options amid national outcry (phản đối kịch liệt) over police brutality (bạo lực của cảnh sát), a White House official confirmed.

-----
The Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is in a coma (hôn mê) and on a ventilator (máy thở) in a hospital intensive care unit (phòng chăm sóc tích cực, hồi sức cấp cứu...) after a suspected poisoning his supporters believe is tied to his anti-Kremlin activism.

An outspoken critic of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, Navalny was returning to Moscow by plane from Siberia when he fell ill, prompting the captain to make an emergency landing in Omsk, where he was taken to hospital. A mobile video shot on the plane showed medical personnel rushing onboard as Navalny screamed in agony (gào thét đau đớn).

The 44-year-old’s press secretary Kira Yarmysh told the Echo of Moscow radio station that Navalny had begun sweating and then lost consciousness (bất tỉnh) shortly after take-off.

“I am sure this was deliberate poisoning (cố ý đầu độc),” she said, added that she suspected (nghi ngờ) a cup of black tea he drank at an airport cafe was the source. She tied the alleged (cáo buộc) poisoning to upcoming elections (cuộc bầu cử sắp tới) in the Siberian regions they had visited.

“Ghost in the machine” nghĩa là gì?

Bên trong bộ não con người là gì? Photo by Mike MacKenzie

“Ghost in the machine” = con ma trong máy -> nghĩa là trí tuệ nhân tạo do máy tính tạo ra hoặc nói về ý thức và tư tưởng, tâm trí tách rời cơ thể của con người, Cụm từ này được đặt ra bởi nhà triết học người Anh Gilbert Ryle trong cuốn “The Concept of Mind” (1949) về quan điểm mà ông cho là hoàn toàn sai lầm.

Ví dụ
Most scientists today would predict that in our future the dazzling searchlight (đèn pha rọi sáng chói) of science will burn off the last fading vapours (vật hư ảo) of what the philosopher (nhà triết học) Gilbert Ryle termed 'the ghost in the machine', leaving souls as relics (di vật) of history and wrapping minds firmly inside the nets of causality (quan hệ nhân quả).

In considering the old “ghost in the machine” idea, we confronted the enigma (bí ẩn) of what happens to mind, at least conscious mind, when we sleep or are anesthetized (gây mê) or experience certain kinds of head trauma (chấn thương) that produce coma (hôn mê). In those circumstances, conscious mind is clearly gone, though the potential to reactivate it may still be there.

I am aware that I have occasionally invoked (gọi hồn) Gilbert Ryle's ghost in the machine without devoting much effort to making my philosophical intentions (ý đồ triết học) clear. Ryle was concerned, in The Concept of Mind, not with the role of gernes in development, or even, really, with the nature-nurture (nuôi dưỡng bản chất) problem, but with the mind-matter (tinh thần-vật chất) dichotomy (lưỡng phân) and the difficulties he felt it posed for an adequate treatment of behavior and experience.

"Be a ghost of your former self" nghĩa là gì?

Cô ấy không còn nhận ra chính mình nữa. Photo by Engin Akyurt from Pexels

“Like/be a ghost of (someone's or something's) former self” nghĩa là trở thành cái bóng của ai, là phiên bản lỗi của ai/điều gì.

Ví dụ
It seemed clear that in the era of the Big Mac and the Golden Arches the Western was only a ghost of its former self.

For now, she was a busybody around the house, mainly taking care of her mother. Alice Gu was a ghost of her former self.

Though allowed to continue, the feast (tiệc) is now a ghost of its former self: it takes place inside a locked house in total silence.

She looked like the ghost of her former self. Her face was white and worn, her hands were thin, her eyes were sunken (trũng sâu) and surrounded by a black circle.

"Lay the ghost of something to rest" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Ian Panelo from Pexels

“Lay the ghost of (something) to rest” hoặc “lay the ghost” = để linh hồn được yên nghỉ -> nghĩa là để tâm hồn thanh tịnh, bớt lo âu, phiền muộn hoặc không còn bị ám ảnh bởi điều gì trong quá khứ. Nghĩa khác là xua đuổi tà ma.

Ví dụ
Master Librarian, I need to lay a ghost to rest and remove the curse (lời nguyền) he placed upon a hoard (kho tích trữ) of gold.

It was another long process, sometimes painful and always difficult, but it seemed to help me lay my ghosts to rest. The healing continues.

Anticipating a 'Culture War with B-2s', New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd perceptively described the proposed invasion (xâm lược) as an attempt to lay the ghost of Vietnam to rest.

According to the archbishop (tổng giám mục), the commission was ‘charged to unearth (khai quật) the truth about our dark past; to lay the ghosts of that past [to rest] so that they may not return to haunt us’.

"Have a gift for" nghĩa là gì?

Tài hoa vốn sẵn tính trời. Photo by Two Dreamers from Pexels

“Have a gift for (doing something)” = có được món quà -> nghĩa là có tài năng (bẩm sinh) làm gì.

Ví dụ
Soandso has a gift for painting.

Martine knew perfectly well that she didn’t have a gift for sport.

If you are very good in math, you have a gift for numbers. You may have a gift for music or dance or cooking or languages or gardening.

If you understood the sentence you just read, then you have a gift for languages. After all, you have already learned to speak and understand at least one language well—English. Everybody is born with a natural ability to learn languages, but some individuals seem to lean languages more quickly than others do.

"God's own gift to" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng ảo tưởng sức mạnh rằng mình quan trọng. :D Photo by Nicholas Swatz from Pexels

“God's own gift to (something)” = món quà Thượng đế ban cho -> nghĩa là nói về tài năng hoặc bản thân người đó rất xuất sắc, vượt trội.

Ví dụ
Him that thinks he's God's own gift to women and cannie keep his hands to himself.

She must have had a spat (cãi vã) with him when she did that one. That's a nowhere guy who thinks he's god's own gift to women.

Experts are the new oracles (nhà tiên tri). They speak to us with the absolute authority of the computer. And we bow down before them. They're God's own gift to the faker.

If you’re so obsessed with Lex give him his own damn show, stop pretending like he’s god’s gift to TV. He’s a straight white dude who is trying to ruin the world, we enough of that on the news we don’t watch Supergirl for it.

-----
the explanation he gave years ago for preemptively signing up for the National Guard (vệ binh quốc gia) in 1970 and thereby avoiding service (phục vụ, phụng sự, đi lính) in Vietnam. “Dying for your country was one thing,” he wrote in his 2007 book “Surrender Is Not an Option, “but dying to gain territory that antiwar forces in Congress would simply return to the enemy seemed ludicrous (lố lăng, lố bịch) to me.”

-----
Along the way, Bolton also mentions other disconcerting( làm rối, làm hỏng, làm đảo lộn; làm chưng hửng) situations when Trump, he says, tried
to ingratiate (cố gắng để giành được sự ưu ái của ai; lấy lòng ai) himself to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey and to Xi Jinping, China’s leader, by dangling (đu đưa, lủng lẳng) the possibility of removing or easing pressure (giảm áp lực) on the Turkish bank Halkbank and the Chinese telecom companies ZTE and Huawei.

Trump told Erdogan that Halkbank’s legal troubles for violating the administration’s sanctions (lệnh cấm, lệnh trừng phạt) on Iran would disappear once the “Obama people” who worked as prosecutors in the Southern District of New York were “replaced by his people,” Bolton writes, deeming it an ultimately empty promise (lời hứa suông). “It was as though Trump was trying to show he had as much arbitrary authority as Erdogan.”

Trump’s conversation with Xi, in Bolton’s telling, was even more nakedly (trần trụi, không giấu giếm) transactional. In the midst of talks about trade (thương mại), Trump “turned the conversation to the coming U.S. presidential election (cuộc bầu cử tổng thống mỹ sắp tới), alluding (nói đến ai/cái gì một cách rút gọn hoặc gián tiếp; ám chỉ; nói bóng gió) to China’s economic capability to affect the ongoing campaigns, pleading with Xi to ensure he’d win,” Bolton writes. “I would print Trump’s exact words, but the government’s prepublication review process has decided otherwise.”

"Beyond a reasonable doubt" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Austin Distel on Unsplash

"Beyond a reasonable doubt" = vượt qua hoài nghi hợp lý -> nghĩa là tự tin, không do dự gì hết.

Ví dụ
Spitzer’s office has rejected that characterization (mô tả), saying prosecutors requested the case be dropped only after an exhaustive (mệt mỏi) review of the evidence showed guilt couldn’t be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

"The question on appeal is not whether Avery is guilty of killing Teresa Halbach," prosecutors (người khởi tố) argued. "That question was for the jury, which many years ago answered yes, beyond a reasonable doubt."

"He was the only person with the baby," Justice Stephen Hillier said Wednesday at the sentencing (kết án) hearing. "The jury concluded the Crown had proven beyond a reasonable doubt that he had at least inflicted (giáng) the fatal head injuries."
