"Worship the ground he walks on" nghĩa là gì?

"Worship the ground he walks on" = tôn thờ con đường anh ta bước trên -> nghĩa là rất ngưỡng mộ/tôn vinh ai.

Ví dụ
It feels like someone has got a voodoo (tà thuật) doll somewhere and doesn't want us to get married. Sean and I have been together for three years. He is my best friend and soulmate; It's proper love and I worship the ground he walks on.

In recent letters to the editor, Americans (note: I did not say Republican, Democrat or independent) who support President Donald Trump have been strongly criticized as if “they are looking through rose- or should I say orange-colored glasses” as well as the “formerly righteous (đứng đắn) Republican Party.” And if those same Americans don’t “bow to his will or worship the ground he walks on, he won’t hesitate to throw them under the bus.”

Michale Thomas is the least likeable receiver in this league. If you don’t worship the ground he walks on, he goes off on a rage tirade (đả kích).

“Cody is amazing. He’s a hard worker, very intelligent, very sweet, friends with everybody,” his older sister Mandy Pillsbury said in an interview early Thursday afternoon. “I just know that when I have a bad day — and my mom — he helps us feel so much better.” She spoke similarly about her grandfather in the interview, calling him the “family’s rock.” “We just worship the ground he walks on,” Mandy Pillsbury said.

"There are too many chiefs and not enough Indians" nghĩa là gì?

"There are too many chiefs and not enough Indians" = quá nhiều tù trưởng nhưng ít da đỏ -> nghĩa là có nhiều người muốn lãnh đạo nhưng ít người làm việc.

Ví dụ
We all know that phrase which says that sometimes “There are too many Chiefs and not enough Indians,” don’t we? Well, here is one of those situations that needs a little work so viewers can get the information they need, because too many Chiefs can put a weathercast (dự báo thời tiết) viewer on the warpath.

There are “too many chiefs and not enough Indians” in the fire services, the Sinn Féin ardfheis has been told as delegates (đại biểu) voted in favour of an all-Ireland fire authority. On the second day of the national conference at the Convention Centre in Dublin, a Bray, Co Wicklow delegate told the ardfheis that one in every four euro spent on the fire service went on administration and bureaucracy (thủ tục hành chính)  and the creation of a national authority could save €70 million.

“As they say, there are too many chiefs, and not enough Indians,” Brotherton said. When a question was put to all the candidates, asking how they would support the fire services in their respective roles, Toepper suggested the PUD could help facilitate (làm dễ dàng) communication during emergency responses, and even put out calls outside of emergencies, to encourage more volunteerism at the fire stations.

"Where there are too many chiefs and not enough Indians you cannot have a tribe (bộ tộc), so there can be only one chief," Smith, a former MP for South West St Ann declared.

"Of the first magnitude" nghĩa là gì?

"Of the first magnitude" -> nghĩa là có tầm quan trọng/ý nghĩa lớn.
Ví dụ
In between, and thereafter, Terry was my friend, advisor, and legal consultant (cố vấn) on state issues. He was a raconteur (nguời kể chuyện) of the first magnitude. I, and many others, will miss all his wise counsel and friendship.

The second and final presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden promises to be a political event of the first magnitude. Mr. Biden leads in national polling by 7.9%, though the race has been tightening (thắt chặt) over the past two weeks, on October 11 was his margin was 10.3%.

The New York Times, reporting on their London debut with Festival Ballet in 1953, wrote that they had received “an ovation (hoan hô) of the first magnitude” and that after dancing the “Don Quixote Pas de Deux” for 15 minutes “they spent another 15 minutes taking bows (cúi đầu) to thunderous (vang như sấm) applause and receiving giant bouquets of flowers.”

To present the Zoom blooper (đụng chạm) of a Salta deputy fondling his alleged partner on his lap in the midst of a Congress session as the prelude (mở đầu) to a political crisis of the first magnitude might seem completely over the top.

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" nghĩa là gì?

"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone" = (kinh thánh) ai (nghĩ mình) không có tội hãy ném đá người (đàn bà) này trước -> nghĩa là không ai có quyền phán xét người khác, vì ai cũng có sai lầm/tội lỗi.

Ví dụ
“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” In these troubling times of COVID-19, cries of voter fraud (lừa đảo), fake news, and much more, Mayor Ethan Berkowitz should be allowed, without further word regarding his indiscretion (vô ý), to finish out his term as mayor of Anchorage. He admitted he made a mistake and it’s time that we, the residents of Anchorage, get off our high horses, quit judging, and allow this man to get back to the business at hand.

Not just them, either. For me, most of the Revised versions of the Bible are a bunch of pedestrian garbage. While they don’t go so far as to totally miss the point of “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone,” they have edited (chỉnh sửa) out all the poetry of the KJV.

Judge not lest ye be judged. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. That means, it's not your business and you should not speak out. Like you said, a person's salvation (cứu rỗi) is between them and their higher power. It's none of your business. You don't get a say. Blasphemy describes what YOU'RE doing. Assuming you know god's will.

As Jesus said, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” The monuments are inanimate (nhạt nhẽo) art objects, without power. Yet, our civic leaders are either frozen with fear or in favor of removing objects of our collective heritage which to me, represent nothing more than characters from the past who represent the imperfect side of history. They are teaching examples from which we learn.

"Flushed down the tubes" nghĩa là gì?

"Flushed down the tubes" = xả xuống ống -> nghĩa là thua cuộc, thất bại.

Ví dụ
But with every major event, from SxSW to Coachella, being shut down or postponed (hoãn) indefinitely due to the pandemic, organizations are not only having to lay off hundreds of employees, they’re also swiftly losing thousands in event budget and are scrambling to make sure their investments aren’t simply being flushed down the tubes.

As the Giants 2018 season was being flushed down the tubes, Collins averaged eight tackles (cản phá) per game. That was until he tore his labrum (môi trên) against the Chicago Bears on December 2. His injury required surgery to repair the damage, which he had the following week.

The ISSA Boys and Girls’ Championships ended last weekend, and it is not only Kingston College (KC) that lost. Indeed, good sense, sportsmanship, respect for others and oneself were also flushed down the tubes.

Every imported equipment is over invoiced (hóa đơn) and every export by the big groups is under invoiced.. Reliance and Essar sold petroleum products this way for ages with the blessing of GOI of course.. The rupee being flushed down the tubes because of rising crude prices is the biggest joke one can be sold..

"If it's yellow, let it mellow" nghĩa là gì?

"If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down" -> phương pháp tiết kiệm nước đối với những nơi có hệ thống ống nước trong nhà; nếu có nước tiểu trong toilet thì đừng xả vội, khi nào có phân hẵng xả.

Ví dụ
The technique is probably best known by the phrase "If it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown, flush it down." That's right - we are talking about the simple act of refraining (nín nhịn) from flushing the toilet each time you pee (đi tiểu). In our experience, this habit tends to provoke (khơi mào) strong oppinions, either for or against.  Some see it as absolutely second nature (thói quen), and argue that peeing in drinking water is a little obscene (bẩn thỉu) anyway, meanwhile others are inclined to find it revolting (kinh tởm).

The old adage "if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down" remains wise advice. You not only save water while the region remains on level 3 water restrictions, but it also eases (giảm nhẹ) the pressure on the old pipeworks (đường ống).

If it’s yellow, let it mellow – By not flushing for a number one (đi tiểu), you could save 12 litres daily – that’s 36 cups of tea a day and about £15 a year.

We're also asking residents to minimise their wastewater use as we are currently pumping wastewater to sucker trucks while we repair the pipes. For example, it could be shorter showers and washing cycles and if it's yellow let it mellow.
