"Motherhood and apple pie" nghĩa là gì?

"Motherhood and apple pie" = trách nhiệm làm mẹ và bánh táo -> nghĩa là những yếu tố rất tốt và quan trọng trong mắt người Mỹ.

Ví dụ
Sars is all motherhood and apple pie when all we really want is transparency (minh bạch). While Sars’s annual reporting is relatively meticulous (tỉ mỉ, kĩ càng), there are many little foxes in that vineyard that hide behind blank pages.

And after ongoing advocacy (bào chữa) by hundreds of civil (công dân) society groups from around the world, and several United Nations special procedures (quy trình), the final declaration of the summit (cuộc gặp thượng đỉnh) contains only reference to community-led development and human rights. There are no concrete (cụ thể) actionable commitments beyond business as usual dressed in the language of motherhood and apple pie.

There are motherhood and apple pie sentiments in the prospectus (cáo bạch) on climate change and protecting the countryside of course with which no-one can disagree.

The rest of the statement is what the Americans call ‘motherhood and apple pie’ — in other words, platitudes (vô vị), such as, there was agreement “to earnestly (nghiêm túc) implement (thi hành) the important consensus (đồng lòng) reached by the leaders of the two countries, strengthen communications on the ground… avoid taking action that may complicate (làm phức tạp) the situation.”

"Vote of confidence" nghĩa là gì?

"Vote of confidence" có confidence là sự tin tưởng/tín nhiệm -> cụm từ này nghĩa là 'bỏ phiếu tín nhiệm'.

Ví dụ
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif had a telephone conversation with his Afghan counterpart Mohammad Haneef Atmar on Saturday. During the phone call, Foreign Minister Zarif congratulated Atmar on winning the Afghan parliament’s vote of confidence and being elected (bầu cử) as the country’s foreign minister.

The return of England's cricket team to Pakistan next year -- their first visit since a deadly 2009 attack on Sri Lanka's team -- is a vote of confidence in the country's improved security, but analysts (nhà phân tích) say challenges remain.

Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (Barisan Nasional-Bagan Datuk) today called on the government to make the vote of confidence a priority, adding that an emergency declaration should not be considered as an option (lựa chọn).

It is my view that the minister of law has no role whatsoever in determining whether a vote of confidence in the Dewan Rakyat can be tabled (đệ trình). To suggest that such an important issue is subject to the agreement of the minister of law is unconstitutional (trái pháp luật) and a serious breach of the autonomy and independence of the Dewan Rakyat from any form of control by the executive.

"Honest to a fault" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Jon Tyson on Unsplash

"Honest to a fault" có to a fault là vô cùng, hết sức -> cụm từ này nghĩa là rất trung thực, thành thật.

Ví dụ
Following the game, Farrell was honest to a fault about his own performance - ruing a try-scoring chance he could not finish off and letting Jonny May skin him for his second try - but he also pointed out how tough it was in the backline with a lack of fast, clean ball from set-pieces.

No one is more brutally honest than Schmidt. A self-proclaimed Sagittarius, Schmidt is honest to a fault. He doesn't do it to hurt his friends, but to help them. Schmidt is always there when his friends need him, and he would be more than happy to figure out ways to hang out with his new Gemini pal (người bạn) that actually interested them.

Kasuga is honest to a fault and never lets go of his values (giá trị), even after serving 18 years of jail-time. What he believes in is his law, and you’d be sure to remember it. Your other party members function like the signature party members in any RPG, covering different fronts and building bonds with your main character.

Malhotra somehow makes her status-obsessed, honest-to-a-fault character winsome (hấp dẫn). Shruti is blithely blunt (lỗ mãng), telling Akash “You’re really not photogenic (ăn ảnh) at all” when they first meet (she means he looks better in person). Even better is her frank assessment of his prospects: “The problem isn’t that you aren’t rich. It’s that you will never be rich.”

"Generous to a fault" nghĩa là gì?

"Generous to a fault" có to a fault là vô cùng, hết sức -> cụm từ này nghĩa là rất hào phóng, rộng lượng.

Ví dụ
In the 1960s and 70s he helped organised ceilis in Brackagh hall and invited Santa for the children, and when St Patrick's, Maghera were in football finals he was always on hand with refreshments for the boys and girls. He was generous to a fault, a man who grew up in hard times and wouldn't hesitate (ngần ngại) to reach out the hand to someone in trouble.

He grew into being a staunch (trung thành) supporter of the LGBTQ community in Idaho Falls and beyond. He had a heart the size of Texas and was generous to a fault. He laughed and cried at the drop of a hat. His love of God and love of being at daily and Sunday mass was as deep as the ocean.

In 2012, Zach married his college sweetheart, Lisa, who was the love of his life. He was an amazing son and the epitome (ví dụ hoàn hảo) of a big brother, always looking out for his younger siblings. He was intelligent, inquisitive (hay học hỏi), driven, and generous to a fault.

Allison had a wonderful fashion sense and was always impeccably (hoàn hảo) dressed. Never one to crave the spotlight, she was the epitome of class and grace. Generous to a fault, Allison loved to shower her family and friends with thoughtful, elegant gifts.

"A beam in your eye" nghĩa là gì?

"A beam in one's eye" = cái xà trong mắt (trong kinh thánh: “sao anh thấy cái rác trong mắt của người anh em, mà cái xà trong con mắt của mình lại không để ý tới?) -> nghĩa là lỗi lầm, khuyết điểm của bản thân lớn hơn những khuyết điểm của người khác; tiên trách kỉ hậu trách nhân.

Ví dụ
Nice to see someone pointing out at missing proofreading (đọc và sửa) while writing "your going" instead of "you're going". In Italy we say "guarda la trave nel tuo occhio prima della pagliuzza nell'occhio di tuo fratello", which could be translated as "look at the beam in your eye before looking at the tiny particle (hạt) in your brother's eye". It means you should try making yourself better before you criticize others.

Racial (chủng tộc) superiority might be something you’d like to pin on Hitler, but actually it’s a pretty common fallacy (dối trá, ngụy biện) today (and was an extremely common one in the past). That you fail to see the beam in your eye over this issue is, as I said, very funny.

On a side note, I am happy to hear you support Trump. God uses all kinds of sinners (người gây ra tội ác) (of which Trump is one) to accomplish good things. He is a man with a beam in his eye. But despite those foibles (nhược điểm), he is still doing Gods work. Much like your first prophet. Joseph smith: an extremely flawed man, but did many great things.
