"Go on tilt" nghĩa là gì?

Cờ bạc là bác thằng bần. Photo by Radu Florin on Unsplash

"Go on tilt" -> nghĩa là để cho vận đen/đỏ ảnh hưởng đến lối chơi của mình (đánh bạc, chứng khoán,...); càng thua càng khát nước, cố chơi để gỡ, càng thắng càng chơi xông xênh.

Ví dụ
Most people never give themselves a chance to make it as a poker player because when they lose, they get sad, go on tilt, or quit.

Use a money management system to control your losses. Losses will happen to every trader (giao dịch). Don’t let yourself go on “tilt” and blow your whole investment. There are some excellent strategies out there like Parlay or Fixed Fractional, so do some investigation and choose an approach that fits your situation.

No question about it, she is a true poker celebrity. She is the only poker player in history to be in all three poker Halls of Fame — the Senior’s Poker Hall of Fame, the World Series of Poker Hall of Fame and the Women in Poker Hall of Fame. As often as I have seen her playing at the tables, never once did she seem to go on tilt — even after a bad beat (đánh bại).

Similarly, it may hurt our self-awareness (tự nhận thức) and self-control, making it more likely that we go on tilt, destroying our game in the process.

"Seven-league boots" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Lucija Ros on Unsplash

"Seven-league boots" = đôi hài bảy lý (một lý = 3 dặm hay 4,8km) -> nghĩa là di chuyển rất nhanh, ám chỉ người khổng lồ trong chuyện dân gian châu âu hay 'thần hành thái bảo đới tung' trong truyện thủy hử đó các bạn 🙂

Ví dụ
The new technology allows electric cars to drive with seven-league boots, as opposed to the concrete shoes that hampered earlier models.

Can a boy who just turned 20, and who has been an infielder (tiền vệ) throughout his brief Organized Ball career, fill the seven-league boots of outfielder Bobby Thomson?

Traveling the world in seven-league boots, Shell talks to pioneers who are trying to redefine the meaning of work and transform the relationship of businesses to their employees and to the communities around them.

"Knock them in the aisles" nghĩa là gì?

"Knock them in the aisles" = đánh gục họ trên các lối đi -> nghĩa là gây ấn tượng, làm choáng ngợp hay kích thích khán giả (trong buổi trình diễn).

Ví dụ
Good luck, honey. I know your presentation is going to knock them in the aisles today!

Our next guest is a young comedian who's been touring the country, knocking them in the aisles with his edgy humor.

At the seminar, most filmmakers have the same point of view: the most important factor that can bring audiences back to theaters is still in the content of the movie. Need to bring quality products, diversify content to knock them in the aisles.

"The language of the gutter" nghĩa là gì?

"The language of the gutter" có gutter là nơi bùn lầy, cặn bã -> cụm từ này nghĩa là giọng du côn đểu cáng.

Ví dụ
This is the language of the gutter. It is unacceptable, for it crosses the red line of public decorum (chuẩn mực). But in addition to the culture of public decency (thích hợp) that is undermined (làm suy yếu) by such language, it also soon leads to a culture of violence. Lynchings and arson are only the next step in this new public culture that presents one's adversary as a national enemy.

There is a memorable scene where a young boy is beaten (đánh đập) in school for speaking in Scots vernacular (tiếng lóng), “the language of the gutter” according to the tyrannical schoolmaster.

Then he had a twin revelation (khám phá): that creating printed card designs was much less labour intensive than making them one by one; and that the language of the gutter makes money.

That is why we will not go ahead to expose the putrid (tồi tệ) stench (hôi thối) that flows from the self-acclaimed PDP leader in Ika South Local Government Area who is the sponsor and brain behind this noxious (độc hại) and obnoxious (khó chịu) post. We will not condescend (chiếu cố) to the level of a person who can only use the language of the gutter where he belongs.

Đau khổ chi bằng mất tự do

tự do là cách tốt nhất để được an toàn.

trích dẫn hôm nay… is from page 268 of Richard W. Duesenberg’s deeply insightful 1962 article “Individualism and Corporations” (available without charge on-line here) as it appears in Liberty Fund’s 1981 single-volume collection of the New Individualist Review:

Freedom is the best means to security.

-----

The Asian flu (cúm) of 1957-58 was a deadly pandemic (đại dịch chết người) with a broader (rộng hơn) reach for severe outcomes (hậu quả tàn khốc) than Covid-19 of 2020. It killed between 1 and 4 million people worldwide, and 116,000 in the US in a time with half the population. It was a leading contributor to a year in which the US saw 62,000 excess deaths.

Globally (trên toàn cầu), it might have been five times as deadly as Covid-19 (nguy hiểm gấp 5 lần covid), as measured by deaths per capita (số người chết trên đầu người). It was unusually lethal (gây chết người) for younger people: 40 percent of deaths had occurred among people younger than 65, whereas the average age of death Covid-19 is 80 with only 10-20% of deaths under the age of 65.

What’s striking (nổi bật, đập vào mắt, thu hút sự chú ý, thu hút sự quan tâm; đáng chú ý, gây ấn tượng) is how public health officials (viên chức y tế cộng đồng) handled (xử lý, giải quyết) the pandemic. It had a diametrically (hoàn toàn, tuyệt đối) opposite response (ứng phó trái ngược) than policymakers (nhà lập chính sách) pursued (theo đuổi) in 2020. One might assume that this was due to negligence (cẩu thả, lơ đễnh, sơ suất) and a lack of sophistication in understanding the need to lockdown. Surely they didn’t know 65 years ago what we know today!

Actually, this is completely false. Public health experts did in fact consider school closures, business closures, and a ban of public events but the entire ethos of the profession rejected them. There were two grounds for this rejection: lockdowns would be too disruptive, disabling the capacity of medical professionals to deal competently with the crisis (cuộc khủng hoảng), and also because such policies would be futile (vô ích, vô vọng) because the virus was already here and spreading (lây lan).

Lỗ nặng do ảnh hưởng dịch Covid-19, Vietnam Airlines lấy tiền đâu hoạt động?

bắt chước hãng hàng không All Nippon Airways Co. của nhật bản nhé, bán bữa ăn (thường phục vụ) trên máy bay cho người dân thưởng thức ở nhà (nhớ/thèm cảm giác du lịch quá)...
-----

All Nippon Airways Co. (ANA) has sold its meals online three times since last December so people can enjoy them at home. All of its meals sold out within a few days, and the airline plans to add a new dish to the menu on Jan. 26. Japan Airlines Co. (JAL), meanwhile, has been serving in-flight meals at a restaurant (nhà hàng) near Narita Airport (gần sân bay narita) in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, and also started selling the fare abroad in January for the first time.

ANA sold the same kind of meals as those available in its international flights' economy class (vé tiết kiệm trên chuyến bay quốc tế) twice in December 2020, and a total of 1,200 cases -- or 14,400 meals -- were snapped up (bắt lấy, chộp lấy) in a few days.

"Clutch the pearls" nghĩa là gì?

"Clutch the pearls" = giữ chặt viên ngọc -> nghĩa là phản ứng với thái độ khó chịu, ghê tởm tới những thứ từng không phù hợp nhưng bây giờ là điều bình thường.

Ví dụ
One of the things and Rightor and I have talked about is that Bonding is on Netflix. It is not on Pornhub. I’s sort of odd (lạ lùng) that we can talk about murder and violence and nobody blinks an eye, but if you say, “Oh, but my character had a three-way kiss,” all of a sudden, everybody has to clutch the pearls. I love that Bonding is just bringing that conversation to the front. BDSM is fun and, actually, sex is fun.

But since Ben Shapiro needs to placate (xoa dịu) his audience of racist octogenarians (người già từ 80 đến 90 tuổi), he decided to clutch his pearls and read the lyrics out loud. In his little voice. And with “pussy” replaced by “p-word.”

He is a very even-keeled person who doesn’t clutch his pearls (for reference, he doesn’t wear pearls, it’s a metaphor (phép tu từ)) or faint (ngất xỉu) easily, so I immediately understood something was very wrong. That look is where the memory really starts for me. The look on his face.

Ron isn't as funny or outspoken (thẳng thắn) as his wife, and spends most of his time on Twitter talking politics (he's a staunch anti-Trump supporter). Occasionally, he'll clutch his pearls at things Chrissy posts on social media. According to his daughter, this is how their relationship has always been.
