"All Sir Garnet" nghĩa là gì?

"All Sir Garnet" -> nghĩa là mọi thứ đều tốt đẹp, có quy củ.

Ví dụ
Today, my mind is roaming (lang thang) in Gold Coast colonial history and the relevance of certain historical incidents for comparison to the happenings of today. The phrase ‘’everything’s all Sir Garnet’’ was very popular in spoken discourse in England at the turn of the 20th century to signify that everything is alright.

Field Marshal Sir Garnet Wolseley, 1st Viscount and Commander-in-Chief of the army, was one of the most famous British military commanders (chỉ huy) of the 19th century. He was famously efficient — the military expression ‘all Sir Garnet’ means ‘all in order — but he was also a snob (kẻ hợm mình). Or, more accurately, a double snob.

About a hundred year ago, people understood the phrase All Sir Garnet “all right.” According to the explanation I have read, the reference was to Sir Garnet Wolseley’s winning the battles in Egypt in the 1880’s. (Why should it always be Egypt?).

As well as plying (ra sức) his trade across four continents, Garnet contributed to the English language with the phrase "everything's all Sir Garnet", meaning "all is in order".

Dám cãi bà à

cãi nhau, nam thanh niên ở thành phố wichita, bang kansas bị bạn gái tóm chim bóp mạnh khiến phải đi cà nhắc cả tối... :D

Wichita Falls Police were sent to a reported assault (tấn công) Thursday night at an address on Joline Street. The victim (nạn nhân) told officers (sĩ quan) he and his ex-girlfriend, Lisa Morgan, had been in an altercation (cãi lộn, đấu khẩu).

The man said Morgan grabbed (tóm) his testicles (tinh hoàn) and squeezed them while he was standing in the living room (phòng khách). He said he tried to calm Morgan down, but she was throwing metal paintings and other objects. The victim was limping (đi cà nhắc, khập khiễng) and said it hurt to walk (đi lại thấy đau). He told the police he was in pain but said “he’d would be okay.”

The victim was very sweaty (đẫm mồ hôi) and his pants were wrinkled (quần nhăn nhúm) where Morgan had grabbed him.

The victim seemed very nervous (căng thẳng) and shaken up and said he just wanted Morgan out of his house. The officer noted that the victim and Morgan live in the same house and have been together for about nine months (mới sống chung như vợ chồng được 9 tháng).

"Gag a maggot" nghĩa là gì?

"Gag a maggot" có gag là nôn ọe, maggot là con dòi -> cụm từ này nghĩa là ghê tởm, kinh tởm, không hấp dẫn, xấu xí.

Ví dụ
Many local church leaders until the spring of 1972, when he came out. “The situation is enough to gag a maggot,” a member of one church group then told a local newspaper.

And that makes me think of the village idiot that went to the refrigerator to pour himself a glass of milk. When he tasted it, he found it to be gag-a-maggot sour (chua).  So what did he do?  He poured the sour milk back into the bottle and put it back into the refrigerator, sure that it was going to be sweet the next time he wanted some milk.

“We’ve got a saying down here in the country that if something smells that bad it would gag a maggot and that’s how bad it is, it’s terrible,” Brad Lewis explained. He says the smell has crept (ghê tởm) about 2 miles away to his country store.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal later that year, McCarthy described the meat as something that “could gag a maggot.” The moose (nai rừng) meat was from the first kill of a young boy from Chief Thomas Tilden’s tribe.

"The Final Solution" nghĩa là gì?

"The Final Solution" = giải pháp cuối cùng -> nghĩa là chương trình thảm sát người Do Thái ở châu Âu của Đức Quốc xã trong thời kì Đệ tam Đế chế.

Ví dụ
His enthusiastic and efficient Viennese acts of “cleansing” brought rapid (nhanh chóng) promotion: first as governor of Krakow, where he built the notorious ghetto (khu ổ chuột); then as governor in Lemberg of the District of Galicia, where he oversaw the implementation (thi hành) of the Final Solution, under the guidance of Heinrich Himmler. His efforts later brought an indictment for “mass murder” of a hundred thousand or more Jews and Poles, including my grandfather’s family in Lemberg.

“I was born in Parma in 1942, one of the worst years in human history, I think,” she told me. “January was the beginning of the Final Solution.”

The fall of the Soviet Union led to a feast of wartime bureaucratic (thuộc về) records, allowing historians to realize how much leeway Nazi officials were given. It became readily clear that the number of Nazis involved in enacting the Final Solution was much larger than previously believed.

But it is also true that Germany did make an effort to conceal the horrific implementation of the Final Solution. Red Cross representatives visited some concentration camps, where the Nazis endeavored (cố gắng) to hide what was really happening.

Cứu bé 2 tuổi rơi từ tầng 13: Người hùng không đi vắng

...Manh works as a truck driver (lái xe tải) and provides professional packing services (dịch vụ đóng gói chuyên nghiệp). The incident (vụ việc, vụ tai nạn) took place (diễn ra) around 5 pm on Sunday. “I was sitting in the car and waiting to deliver some belongings for a client in the opposite building while hearing a baby’s bawling (khóc oang oang), just thought she was yelled by her mothers. However, no sooner had I heard someone screaming for help (gào thét kêu gọi giúp đỡ) than I stuck my head out of the car, looking around, and saw a girl climbing out of the balcony (ban công). I plunged out of the car immediately and found ways to climb into the nearby building. I mounted on a 2-meter-high tile roof to seek a proper position to get the girl.

I tried to reach out my hand and took the maximum effort to catch the girl. When the baby falls, I just can ward her off so that she would not fall directly to the ground. Luckily, the baby fell into my lap, and the two landing on the sheet roof. I hurriedly embraced her then saw blood leaking from her mouth, I was very frightened ”, Manh reminded.
