"A free bit of advice" = lời khuyên miễn phí -> cụm từ này nghĩa là lời đề nghị, ý kiến hoặc lời khuyên tự nguyện, không phải do yêu cầu.

Ví dụ
Here's a free bit of advice: Want to know if someone’s a good match for you? Take ‘em to a show at the Casbah and see what they do.

If you’re a consultant (cố vấn) performing an assessment for another company, here’s a free bit of advice, too. Diligence (sự cẩn thận, chu đáo) is key.

Stella had a free bit of advice for emerging women in politics, and urges that they stay authentic (đáng tin cậy) and empower themselves by seeking advice from those with experience.

Here's a free bit of advice, your honor: call a moratorium (sự tạm ngừng hoạt động) on the program. Tell the public you're studying the issue and culling the collected data that you never bothered collecting. Then let it quietly die away without admitting defeat.

"Loose translation" nghĩa là gì?

"Loose translation" or "free translation" nghĩa là lời tuyên bố, bài dịch thiếu chính xác hoặc chưa được suy nghĩ kĩ; bài dịch thiếu sắc thái; bài dịch phóng, sự dịch phóng.

Ví dụ
There’s a French word for this throw-caution-to-the-wind (thiếu thận trọng khi hành động) attitude. It’s entrepreneur, and the loose translation is: Had an idea. Did it.

“Our lone warrior is enough to counter all Bollywood sold outs coming out in support of JNU students,” reads a loose translation of the Hindi text given to these pictures by a Facebook user called Aditya Kumar Gond.

FitzGerald’s lyrical (trữ tình) rendering (bản dịch) is a loose translation at best, but one that reflects the enthusiasm of the era: he studied Farsi with the poet laureate, Alfred Lord Tennyson, who as an undergraduate had penned a clumsy paean

"Come to feet" nghĩa là gì?

Let's make some noise. Photo by Andre Benz

"Come to (one's) feet" = Đến/tự đứng bằng đôi chân -> Đứng lên, đặc biệt là khi đứng lên để cổ vũ và hoan hô ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
Dotson did the same, screaming “Wooo” to no one in particular and waving his arms to the crowd, which had come to its feet.

As, Yeh started to slowly come to his feet, he felt the sharp pain of his wounds (vết thương) and the deer charged him again. The deer began to stomp (dậm mạnh) him again and so Yeh tried to run away.

Bargnani's taunting was most likely connected to this dustup just a minute earlier, when the two players tangled during a rebound (sự bật lại, nẩy lên), fell to the ground, and got more uncomfortable as they attempted to come to their feet. Each earned a technical for the incident.

"Not safe for work" nghĩa là gì?

Làm việc đi, sao cứ nhìn điện thoại mãi vậy -_- Photo by: bruce mars on Unsplash

"Not safe for work" = không an toàn trong làm việc -> cụm từ (viết tắt là NSFW) thường đi với các bài viết, video, trò chơi điện tử để thông báo rằng chúng có nội dung không thích hợp với môi trường làm việc, công sở.

Ví dụ
This post is not safe for work. Okay, we know the answer to one question. Grimes, a popular musician who has been dating Elon Musk for what seems like a lifetime (cả đời), posted the following to her Instagram today.

Billionaire Elon Musk boogied on stage at a Tesla event in Shanghai, demonstrating (mô tả) that his moves aren't as smooth as riding in one of his company's cars. It just goes to show that all the money in the world can't buy rhythm (giai điệu). Musk called his dancing "not safe for work."

Under Tumblr’s new policy (chính sách), users are not allowed to post any not-safe-for-work (NSFW) content: that includes nudity (khỏa thân), pornography, and media showing “real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples.”

"Come to attention" nghĩa là gì?

"Come to (one's) attention" = Làm cho ai để ý/chú ý tới; làm cho ai biết hết hoặc phát hiện ra.

Ví dụ
In terms of an emergency fund for providers, she said “we’ll consider everything” although she said it has not yet been discussed as the issue had only come to her attention in the last number of days.

I write to you today to raise concerns regarding the safety of Americans as they travel abroad and the steps that the Department takes to inform travelers of security concerns when they are far from home. It has come to my attention that some employees in foreign airports have resorted to a “bullet-in-luggage” scheme, which has led to the arrest and detention (sự bắt giữ, giam cầm) of travelers in both the Philippines and Thailand.

In the past few months you may or may not have heard about a new Toyota Supra; got one or two people very excited, so it did. It might also have come to your attention that a new Supra has increased awareness and appreciation of old Supras, most specifically the A80 (the Fast & Furious one) and also the A70, the pop-up headlamp (đèn pha) car that preceded it. Where once a manual, UK A80 could be bought for a lot less than £20k and the A70 was Shed money, both now command much higher price tags.

"Come to an understanding" nghĩa là gì?

"Come to an understanding with (someone)" = Hiểu ai, đi đến thỏa thuận với ai.

Ví dụ
Speaking on a podcast released 18 December by Norway-based investment bank DNB Markets, Norwegian’s acting Geir Karlsen said that he hoped “to come to an understanding” with Boeing “before the end of the year”.

Picard slowly learns, and the way in which he does so forms the heart of the episode. He is indeed patient and imaginative enough to come to an understanding with Dathon, though I would insist a lot has to do with the efforts of the latter—take for example his offering of fire, or his patience as he more than once offers Picard the knife.

At one point in In Spite of Ourselves, Seattle cartoonist and illustrator Natalie Dupille's character is struggling to maneuver (thao diễn, điều động) around roadkill while riding her bike on a busy Oregon highway, watching her partner, Allie, get farther and farther ahead. Through the sweat and struggle, Dupille internally berates (mắng mỏ) herself for not being able to keep up, angry about the bike trip she's on. It all finally explodes out when she catches up with her partner. They hash out the conflict, apologize, and come to an understanding with one another—stronger in both a physical and emotional way, facing the rest of their journey together.

"Come to a close" = Kết thúc, chấm dứt một quá trình/thực hiện một công việc.

Ví dụ
Xavi will be the next manager of Barcelona, sources have confirmed to Goal, with Ernesto Valverde’s tenure (sự nắm giữ, chiếm hữu) at Camp Nou set to come to a close at the end of the season.

The fallout (bụi phóng xạ, điều không mong muốn) continues from the Minnesota Vikings' playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday and less than 24 hours after seeing their season come to a close, Kevin Stefanski has been chosen as the next head coach of the Cleveland Browns, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.

As the 2010s come to a close, the "Decade in Review" series will seek to single out the 10 best films from the 10 biggest genres. Perhaps no trend in the film industry was as visceral (nội tạng, theo bản năng) and as encompassing (bao quanh) in the 2010s as the growth of superhero films, which have cemented (gắn kết) themselves as pop culture phenomena, holding 11 spots on the list of the 25 highest grossing films (phim có doanh thu cao nhất) of the decade. Still, it’s hard to define a genre that’s growing exponentially in all directions. Here is an attempt to dissect the very best of what the decade had to offer.

"Come to a bad end" nghĩa là gì?

Mẹ ơi, đừng bỏ con! Photo by Kelly Sikkema

"Come to a bad end" = kết thúc thảm hại; thất bại nặng, kết cục thê thảm.

Ví dụ
A kitten is sniffing (khụt khịt, sổ mũi) a flower in a blue vase (the flower is in the vase, not the kitten) and you just know that vase is about to come to a bad end.

In Elizabeth is Missing, Jackson played Maud, an eighty-something who is being lost to Alzheimer’s. Maud fears her friend Elizabeth might have come to a bad end. As she tries to raise the alarm, Maud’s mind is drawn back to a previous missing person, her beloved sister Sukey. One way or another she means to find answers, though to which mystery we do not know.

Geopolitically (xét về mặt khoa địa chính trị), there were hot spots and crises across the globe for much of 2019. In Q4, all this was happening: the on-going freedom protests in Hong Kong, which still seems likely to come to a bad end; the new fighting in Syria and Iraq as the Turks move in as the US moves out; Iran apparently sending drone aircraft against Saudi oil tankers; violence in the Catalonia area with protestors again seeking independence from Spain; violent protests in Chile from protestors against income inequality, triggered by a subway fare hike; the never ending Brexit process; China-US trade wars; continued significant tensions with China over control of the South China sea; other protests in India, Lebanon and more.
