"A lot on my plate" nghĩa là gì?

Tôi sẽ xong việc sớm thôi. Photo by  Thought Catalog

"A lot on my plate" = Có rất nhiều thứ trên dĩa của ai đó -> Có rất nhiều công việc để làm.

Ví dụ
“And that’s really three different positions. That’s three different fundamentals (quy tắc cơ bản); that’s three different techniques (kỹ năng, kỹ thuật). You’re involved in the run game, the passing game and pass protection. So, you have a lot on your plate.”

I spend a lot of time in France, where humble (khiêm nhường) municipal (đô thị, thành phố) gendarmes (hiến binh) routinely wear holstered pistols (súng bao da dấu bên trong các dây thắt lưng) on duty (theo bổn phận, nghĩa vụ). I don't feel threatened by that. Our next prime minister (thủ tướng) will have a lot on his plate.

Chris Boswell will be on everybody’s radar at Saint Vincent College, but place kicking isn’t the only aspect of the Steelers’ special teams that figures to be heavily scrutinized (kiểm tra chặt chẽ) this summer. Coordinator (điều phối viên) Danny Smith will have a great deal on his plate.

"In a lip lock" nghĩa là gì?

Anh yêu em. Photo by  Alejandra Quiroz

"In a lip lock" = Trong một cuộc khóa môi -> Đang hôn nhau nồng nhiệt. :))))

Ví dụ
In the said video, the 49-year-old singer and songwriter (nhạc sĩ) is seen in a lip lock with another man who clearly looks nothing like her boyfriend.

This candid (vô tư, bộc trực) picture of Priyanka and Nick sharing a passionate lip-lock on the red carpet (trên thảm đỏ) left everyone swooning over them (bị xúc động, ngất trước họ).

The adorable duo (bộ đôi) celebrated their engagement (lễ đính hôn) with a romantic lip-lock.

As per Spotboye report, the lead couple (cặp đôi vai chính) Tejasswi and Kunal refused to do lip-lock scene! When Tejasswi was asked regarding the same, she revealed that the makers (nhà sản xuất) had initially asked her and Kunal do a lip-lock scene.

"A face like a wet weekend" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Vincent Delegge on Unsplash

Khi ai đó nói bạn có "a face like a wet weekend" tức là bạn đang có một khuôn mặt dường như vừa bị tổn thương, buồn bã, thảm hại.

Ví dụ:
So here we have it, Cllr Goodman on local TV, with a face like a wet weekend, telling us the only way to ‘clean air’ is by introducing a Congestion charge.

Uhtred’s Saxon followers aren’t a bit keen to invade (xâm chiếm) their homeland, and their lord gets a face like a wet weekend every time a fellow Dane slams down (ném phịch) his cup of ale and promises to burn Wessex to the ground.

He came on when the game was entering its final stages, with a face like a wet weekend, he stepped up to take the penalty (droit du seigneur for being Florentino’s pet), converted from the spot then shrugged (lay) off his team mates as they rushed over to try and celebrate with him.

"As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly" nghĩa là gì?

Ủa! Hình như có gì sai sai! Photo by Fredrik Öhlander on Unsplash

"As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly" (Như việc một con chó có thể ăn lại những thứ nó nôn ra, một người ngu ngốc có thể lặp lại những sai lầm của họ.) là câu thành ngữ ý muốn nói rằng những người ngu ngốc thường có xu hướng lặp lại những lỗi lầm, những hành động sai trái mà họ đã từng gây ra.

Ví dụ:
“Just as a dog returns to his vomit, a fool returns to his folly,” Poole said, reciting Proverbs (tục ngữ).

As the Book of Proverbs says, "As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly". Perhaps as prime minister, Mr Turnbull should have read his Proverbs before attaching himself to the same policy that had previously ended his job as opposition leader.

McCormick got a penitentiary sentence (tuyên án cải tạo) in 2009 for a string of break-ins (đường dây đột nhập vào các toà nhà để trộm cắp). He then followed the law for several years, working as a roofer (thợ lợp mái). But earlier this year, McCormick fell back into a life of drugs and crime. "As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly," said defence lawyer Hal Mattson, quoting from the Book of Proverbs in the Bible.

Ngày dài chả biết làm gì.Photo by Nicola Dreyer on Unsplash

Albert might have been in public a happy 'let the dog see the rabbit' sort of man, but he rolled the dice (gieo xúc xắc) with some of the greatest political cardsharps (kẻ gian lận cờ bạc) of his time.

Christine says she has made Paddy, famous for his catchphrases “no likey, no lighty” and “Let the dog see the rabbit”, promise to cut out the one-liners (bỏ những lời nói đùa) when she goes into labour (vào phòng đẻ).

Byrne and event producer John Kennedy travel down to Dingle from Dublin six or seven times a year for meetings and to check out new places to host the trail. “You do have to be on the ground to ‘let the dog see the rabbit’, so to speak."

"Shore leave" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Oliver Sjöström on Unsplash.

'Shore leave' nghĩa là thời gian nghỉ phép chính thức một thủy thủ chuyên nghiệp được phép lên bờ (thường say sưa, ngủ với gái...), được hiểu là tự do trong hải quân Mỹ.

Ví dụ
Though Spieth is ranked 16th on tour in first-round scoring and second in second-round scoring, he has been stumbling across the weekend like a drunken sailor on shore leave.

Veronica is back at Neptune, serving as co-owner of her dad’s detective (thám tử tư) agency. Logan is back on shore leave and she’s getting her kisses in while she can. There’s a new mystery (bí ẩn) as someone is trying to sabotage (phá hoại ngầm) Spring Break, driving tourist dollars away from Neptune and hurting small businesses. Patton Oswalt is involved somewhere. And through it all, Veronica tries her best not to swear.

The game begins by placing the two players in control of a pair of navy blokes (thuyền trưởng; gã, chàng), back in what feels like a WWII era setting. This duo is enjoying some drunken shore leave at a fairground of sorts. You're soon shepherded (trông nom săn sóc, hướng dẫn, dẫn dắt) towards some sideshow attractions (điểm thu hút) that explain the mechanics of the game: one of you tries out a punching-based (đấm bốc) fairground challenge that teaches the combat controls (kỹ thuật chiến đấu); meanwhile, the other player goes to a fortune-teller (bói toán) booth where you learn the conversational and decision-making mechanics. Then you swap.

"Break out in a cold sweat" nghĩa là gì?

"Break out in a cold sweat" = toát mồ hôi lạnh -> chỉ sự lo lắng, sợ hãi.

Ví dụ
It’s the number one thing my partner and I don’t talk about. Well, I shouldn’t say we don’t talk about it. He tries; I break out into a cold sweat and my left eye starts twitching (co giật).

In an exercise looking at beliefs (nhìn vào niềm tin), I asked the group how many people love flying and how many hate it? About half loved it, especially turbulence (hỗn loạn, bất an), and the other half broke out in a cold sweat at the mere mention of the word.

According to a 2019 survey from market research company (công ty nghiên cứu thị trường) Leger, sponsored by Banana Boat, one in two Canadians aren't applying enough sunscreen (kem chống nắng) to protect themselves from harmful rays (tia có hại), and nearly a quarter say they don't wear any sunscreen at all. As a former beauty editor and devoted sun safety advocate (ủng hộ), these numbers make me break out in a cold sweat.

"In the cold light of day" = trong ánh sáng lạnh lẽo của ban ngày -> (khi) cân nhắc/ xem xét sự việc một cách bình tĩnh, vô tư, bỏ qua cảm xúc. "Light of day" tượng trưng cho sự hiểu biết, sáng suốt còn "cold" ở đây có nghĩa là lạnh lùng, vô cảm.

Ví dụ
When you really analyse it, in the cold light of day, they’ve no excuse (không bào chữa) on Sunday. They had chances earlier in the game to put up a score and have Kilkenny chase you.

Losing fan favourites is hard, but in the cold light of day Pochettino could argue that the fans also want trophies (cúp) and those players did not deliver those for them in the big moments.

Yes, it’s over. It’s all done and dusted (hóa bụi). The closest final we will likely ever see. But it wasn’t as satisfying (thỏa mãn) as it could have been. To think about it in the cold light of day, the side with the most depth snuck through (lẻn qua).

"A zero-tolerance policy" nghĩa là gì?

Đừng bắt em anh ơi!!! Photo courtersy: Keith Allison

"A zero-tolerance policy" = chính sách không khoan nhượng - Không bỏ qua bất cứ lỗi nào.

The Centre has adopted (áp dụng) a ‘zero tolerance’ policy to tackle terrorism (giải quyết vấn đề khủng bố) and the security forces (lực lượng an ninh) have been given a ‘free hand’ to deal with the menace (mối đe dọa).

Fourth of July celebrations are just hours away and this year police in Everett are taking a "Zero Tolerance Policy" when it comes to illegal fireworks. If detectives (trinh thám) see them in Everett, they will take them up and people could get a ticket.

A new report on the Trump administration's ill-fated (bất hạnh) "zero tolerance" policy reveals that children who were separated from their parents in the spring of 2018 are still in U.S. custody (giám hộ) and details instances in which infants (trẻ nhỏ) as young as 4 months old were held by the government for nearly half a year.

"Six of one and half-a-dozen of the other" nghĩa là gì?

"Six of one and half-a-dozen of the other" = 6 cái này và nửa tá cái kia -> không khác gì nhau.

Ví dụ
It might even have been his fault, or at any rate, six of one and half a dozen of the other, so stop torturing (ngừng hành hạ) yourself and write it all off as craziness on everyone's part.

“It is six, one half a dozen of another as far as I am concerned,” Newsome said. “What does matter is who are you going to put in those positions that is going to care about the children you have in the school district?”

A witness (nhân chứng) branded it ‘an unpleasant street’ (con đường khó chịu) and said it was ‘like a cattle market’ (chợ gia súc). The two men, both chemical workers, had again exchanged words at the works. Magistrates (quan tòa) dismissed the case, calling it ‘six of one, half a dozen of the other’, and ordering each party to pay their own costs.

"Stand four-square behind someone/something" có từ "four-square" nghĩa là sự vững chãi, kiên định. Cụm từ này có nghĩa là ủng hộ, giúp đỡ ai đó/ điều gì đó mạnh mẽ, hết mình.

Ví dụ
“We stand four square behind that agreement, four square behind the people of Hong Kong. There will be serious consequences if that internationally binding legal agreement (thỏa thuận pháp lý ràng buộc quốc tế) were not to be honoured (tôn trọng).” Hunt did not specify what those consequences would be.

Scores of Capitol Hill GOPers took a dim view (cái nhìn mờ nhạt) of President Trump prior to the 2016 election. But most rallied (tụ họp) to his defense and many even heralded (báo trước) the findings of the Mueller report. Republicans (Đảng Cộng hòa) quickly learned they needed to stand foursquare behind Trump.

Assad was more and more secure (an toàn) in Damascus; his rule had been tolerated (khoan nhượng) for so long by the rest of the world that any idea that it could be threatened by international outrage ceased to hold real power. The regime’s backers (người ủng hộ chế độ), in Iran and Russia, continued to stand four-square behind Assad and his internal allies (đồng minh nội bộ).

"Do a double take" = thực hiện gấp đôi -> thể hiện phản ứng trước những tin bất ngờ/ nhìn lại ai đó hay vấn đề gì đó một lần nữa.

Ví dụ
Marketers looking to capture attention (thu hút sự chú ý) can take a lesson from a young boy’s roadside (lề đường) stand in Brigham City, Utah, which caused several to do a double take.

The Jean Paul Gaultier suit (bộ đồ) featured the image of a woman's bare bust (ngực trần) and torso (thân mình) that aligned with (phù hợp) Jenner's actual body and probably required Instagram followers to do a double take.

In a Q&A session Friday with young fans at a promotional event attended by local Houston media, Harden said he will be working on yet another move this summer, and this one might make referees (nhà phê bình) do a double take.

"Once bitten twice shy" nghĩa là gì?

Lần sau nhớ rửa táo kỹ rồi hẵng ăn nhé! Photo courtesy: Gaia Pazzagli

"Once bitten, twice shy" = một lần bị cắn, lần sau tránh -> ý chỉ bài học nhớ đời, một lần bị tổn thương và sẽ không bao giờ có lần thứ hai.

Ví dụ
We’re quite clear that we consider (cân nhắc) Greenply Industries to be really rather risky (khá rủi ro), as a result of its debt. So we’re almost as wary (cẩn thận) of this stock as a hungry kitten is about falling into its owner’s fish pond: once bitten, twice shy, as they say.

Once bitten, twice shy: It’s easy to see the appeal of pushing into (thúc đẩy vào) China for Google: it’s the single biggest market for internet users anywhere. However, it would be a very tricky (rất khó) relationship to manage, especially in the context of US concerns over censorship (kiểm duyệt), plus the trade war and tensions (căng thẳng) between the US and China.

“I don’t think he will ever come back,” said the tuck shop (cửa hàng bánh kẹo) owner. “How is he going to pay the money back? I won’t ever invest in a Ponzi scheme (kế hoạch) again. Once bitten, twice shy. It is said that the police were also investing in the scheme, so the community no longer trusts the police.”

"In one fell swoop" = trong một cú ngã bổ nhào -> quyết định/ hành động được thực hiện nhanh chóng.

Ví dụ:
“I’ve always been an admirer of sneakers (yêu giày thể thao) but I didn’t know much about it,” he said. “I thought this was, in one fell swoop, the opportunity to have a world-class collection (bộ sưu tập đẳng cấp thế giới) that I could build upon over the next 25 years.”

Ex-JP Morgan staffer (cựu nhân viên) Stephanie Hackett, is now a partner in Evercore's RIA. With 25% of shares (cổ phần) set aside, Evercore Wealth Management makes three women 'partners' in one fell swoop at , but don't call it affirmative action (hành động quả quyết), says US Trust spin-off (kết quả).

Would you like to solve a lot of the traffic and affordable housing (giá cả nhà ở hợp lý) issues in our Bay Area cities, with one fell swoop? "On the up and up" nghĩa là gì?

Đang trên đà phát triển. Photo by Fab Lentz

"On the up and up" -> Đang cải thiện và đi lên mạnh mẽ, đang ngày càng thành công.

Ví dụ
An honest (thật thà, trung thực) person is “on the up and up.” An improving person is “on the up.” DeMarcus Lawrence might have been honest and improving when he spoke about his health.

I think we're on the up and up now. We're just going to try to close out more games get more results and hopefully push for a playoff spot.

AARP member, Margo Chesebro says, “The important thing for me is the price of pharmaceuticals (dược, việc mua bán thuốc). I happen to take an inhaler (máy thở oxi) that has gone up from $500 a month to almost $1,000 a month.” AARP member, John Fox says, “We can’t let it keep going up and up and up it has the change.” That change being addressed (được giải quyết, xử lý) by all four candidates (thí sinh, người ứng cử). Each supports allowing Medicare (chương trình của chính phủ Mỹ về việc chăm sóc người già) to negotiate (thương lượng) drug prices directly with pharmaceutical companies.

Lại giấu đồ chơi của tui ở đâu rồi?! Photo courtesy: Jennet

"Be the butt of the joke" = cái mông của trò đùa -> trở thành đối tượng của trò đùa, giễu cợt.

Ví dụ
They may also be supported by a dwarf (lùn, còi cọc) entertainer, a person whose career involves being the butt of the joke, a person who is always laughed at but never with.

No, the problem was that he’s mocked (chế nhạo, nhạo báng) for it and made the butt of jokes about his weight far too many times in Endgame; one fat joke could have been an insensitive mistake (sai lầm vô cảm), but a host of them made for an awful pattern (hình mẫu kinh khủng).

“My hair has been a running joke for a long time,” she told Arizona Mirror. Her long hair is often the butt of jokes among her legislative colleagues (đồng nghiệp lập pháp), so using her hair as a ploy (mánh khóe) for fundraising (gây quỹ) for LD24 schools seemed somewhat natural, Longdon said.

"A cushy number" nghĩa là gì?

Làm việc chăm chỉ để cuối tháng nhận lương chứ Photo by Snapwire on Pexels

'A cushy number' = một con số dễ chịu -> từ này để ám chỉ một tình huống dễ dàng, công việc không có nhiều áp lực và đặc biệt trả lương cao. Đây chính là mục tiêu của tất cả chúng ta phải không các bạn 'việc nhẹ lương cao' :D

Ví dụ
He got a cushy number after a failed business and always know the pension (trợ cấp) from the old days in FG was in the pot, so again , financially secure and THAT’S what its all about at the end of the day.

Her Britannic Majesty's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary (Đại sứ đặc mệnh toàn quyền) to the United States of America may be one of the top jobs in the diplomatic service - but it is not a cushy number, as Sir Kim Darroch found out this week.

Given that MSPs earn a more than comfortable salary of £62,149, a two-month break seems rather indulgent (chiều chuộng). The impression of a cushy number is reinforced (củng cố thêm) when Holyrood’s nine-week break is compared with the six-week Westminster recess (ngừng họp).

"Vent your spleen" -> Trút hết sự căm phẫn, hằn học vào ai.

Ví dụ
This was far from the righteous (người công chính) novelist’s first outing on the BBC, or the first opportunity they have given him to vent his spleen over Brexit and the ‘deplorable’ (đáng trách) decision of those ignorant (dốt nát) enough to vote in Donald Trump as President of the USA. Here he is speaking to a strangely non-confrontational (không đối chất), non-hectoring (không ăn hiếp, bắt nạt) Emily Maitlis (winner of the TCW’s most biased (lệch, không tương xứng) BBC presenter award) about his book Pussy – described by the BBC as a ‘turbocharged satire’ about Trump – and about Brexit and democracy.

One aggrieved (bị buồn phiền) person who is ready to vent her spleen on the organizers if given the ample (nhiều, phong phú, rộng mở) opportunity is plus size Nollywood actress, Monalisa Stephen. According to her, the selection process (quá trình tuyển chọn) wasn’t free and fair because there is no fat person among the contesting housemates.

"Under the spotlight" nghĩa là gì?

"Under the spotlight" = dưới ảnh đèn sân khấu -> trung tâm của sự chú ý.

Ví dụ
The high standard of musicianship was under the spotlight in a special showcase performance at Chilton Primary School, Ramsgate. Talented young performers and singers from all age groups staged a lively concert for families and staff to mark the culmination (đỉnh cao) of another year of music making at the school.

The group came under the spotlight in 2016 when researchers (các nhà nghiên cứu) accused (buộc tội) it of helping spy (gián điệp) on an activist in the United Arab Emirates.

The mountain hosted its first-ever paragliding championship (vô địch dù lượn) back in 2004 and found itself under the spotlight. Over the years, the mountain has become an attraction for Turkish and international paragliders (người chơi dù lượn) who want to test their limits.

'You can't be half pregnant' = chỉ có đang có thai hoặc không có thai chứ không thể có "mang thai một nửa" được -> tình huống cần xác định rõ ràng, chắc chắn hoặc cam kết bạn có thể tham gia/liên quan hoàn toàn tới mức độ nào.

Ví dụ
"You can't be half-pregnant. You're either channel-focused or you're not," Casey said. "It's now time that they grow up a little bit and find other partners in order to espouse (tham gia vào, ủng hộ) the value that Bitglass has already demonstrated in the marketplace."

As a good buddy (bạn) once told me, “you can’t be half-pregnant”, so if the Blue Jays are going to commit to a rebuild (xây dựng lại) and roll out a young lineup (đội hình) on a regular basis, I hope they’re willing to prioritize (ưu tiên) the same for their young pitching talent.

I know you can’t be half pregnant and if we plan to legalize (hợp pháp hóa) casinos and gambling (trò cờ bạc) this is the path that seems inevitable (không thể tránh khỏi). I just worry putting a slot machine in everyone’s pocket is going to lead to some families not being able to make next month’s rent.

"Live off the land" -> cố gắng sống sót, sinh tồn bằng cách ăn những gì có thể tạo ra, có thể săn bắn, hoặc có trong tự nhiên.

Ví dụ

A Gemini Spacecraft VIII capsule that he flew in March 16, 1966, is on display that was designed by NASA. To this day, Somerset still has a market town called Somerton. Situated on the River Cary, it has a population of just 5,000 people. Others believe Somerset was named by the ancient Welsh Celts and Saxons, as they could only live off the land during the summer months.

Ngại quá hơ? Photo by Caleb Woods

"Hide face in shame" -> Che mặt lại vì ngại ngùng và e thẹn.

Ví dụ
BMO said the PDP and its leaders should hide their faces in shame for supporting corruption (sự hối lộ, tham nhũng).

I thought by now Okorocha should be hiding his face in shame after he lost his bid (sự đấu giá, sự công bố) to install his son in-law (con rể) and win his senatorial (thượng nghị sĩ) election.

The year's barely begun and already the headlines (tiêu đề) make you want to hide your face in shame. 'Well begun is half done' = khởi đầu tốt là coi như xong một nửa -> ý nói nếu chuẩn bị tốt, làm tốt ngay từ đầu thì những phần sau cũng sẽ dễ dàng hơn. Các cụ nhà mình có câu 'đầu xuôi đuôi lọt' cũng khá giống với cụm này đấy các bạn.

Ví dụ
If well-begun is half-done, Shah looks already halfway through — at least with regard to how politics in Kashmir has changed since the day he assumed office on June 1, 2019.

So if you're planning to start your fitness journey right about now, then check out these latest fitness trackers that will become the apple of your eye in no time. After all, well begun is half done.

Less is more in the post-production if things were handled right in the production (sản xuất) because well begun is half done. On that account, the last thing that you should give the utmost (cực kì) importance apart from the video editors (biên tập, chỉnh sửa) is the audio editing software.

'Half-dead' = chết một nửa -> từ này dùng để miêu tả cảm giác quá mệt mỏi, kiệt sức, mệt muốn chết ấy các bạn :)

Ví dụ

Since his acquittal (trả xong nợ), the actor has maintained a low profile. In his interview tonight with ABC News, he explains that he’s tempted to go back to acting, but isn’t sure he has it in him. “You say, ‘Well why don’t you work?’” Blake is quoted as saying. “‘Cause I’m half dead.”

"Hope against hope" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Ben White on Unsplash

"Hope against hope" = hi vọng nối tiếp hi vọng -> tiếp tục hi vọng, trông mong vào một điều gì đó ngay cả khi điều đó là vô vọng, chẳng bao giờ có thể xảy ra.

Ví dụ
As shown for years in these pages, Darwinians commit two fouls (phạm lỗi) in their scientific papers (bài báo khoa học) about the Cambrian explosion. One is to completely ignore the arguments by Darwin skeptics (hoài nghi) for intelligent design. The second is to hope against hope that a suggestion here or there might “shed light” on the Cambrian radiation. Each time, they issue promissory (phát hành) notes that someday Darwin’s Doubt may no longer “remain inexplicable (không thể giải thích).” Their critics should say, “Time’s up. You guys lost.”

U.S. homeland security (Bộ An ninh Nội địa) leaders, federal prosecutors (công tố viên liên bang), and perhaps most Members of Congress hope against hope they've done all they can to deter (ngăn cản) Americans from joining global jihadist groups that want to harm their own country and kill fellow citizens. Enhanced investigative (tăng cường điều tra) powers and stiff prison sentences are the tools of the trade.

The three-quarters (ba phần tư 3/4) of voters who reject a no-deal Brexit could only hope against hope that, just possibly, Hunt might defy the odds (thành công dù ko ai nghĩ sẽ vậy) and persuade the Brexit-crazed old white men of the Tory tribe to think again. No longer. The only useful role for the inevitable loser in the Conservative leadership contest was to pull the next prime minister back into the realms of reality (cõi thực tại).
