"Daylight robbery" nghĩa là gì?

Đắt thế này ai mua được :( Photo by: Marc Kleen on Unsplash

"Daylight robbery" = ăn cướp giữa ban ngày -> nghĩa là mua đồ và phải trả với giá đắt cắt cổ.

Ví dụ
Speaking on Monday, ISA acting chief executive described it as “daylight robbery” and queried (chất vấn) why politicians (chính trị gia) have their superannuation (phụ cấp hưu trí) paid out with their pay packets, but not other Australians.

Other Leicester fans joked that £80m was “daylight robbery”, suggesting that United massively overpaid (trả giá quá cao) for Maguire. “Fair play for getting £80m from them - use that money well,” said one fan. “Fair play Foxes, squeezed every pound out of that big head,” added another. “Absolute fantastic business @LCFC. He will be replaced no problem, amazing amount of profit (lợi nhuận),” said another Leicester fan.

Celtic fans have now taken to Twitter to react to the rumours (lời đồn đại), with many hoping to see him stay. Some feel it will be hard to replace a goalscoring winger (cầu thủ chạy cánh) for just £2.5million, branding the price ‘daylight robbery’.

"Off the reservation" nghĩa là gì?

Chính vì phát ngôn sử dụng cụm từ "off the reservation" một cách thiếu thận trọng khi tranh cử tổng thống mà bà Hilary Clinton đã vướng phải chỉ trích nặng nề từ cộng đồng người Mỹ da đỏ bản địa. Image by John Hain from Pixabay

Clinton made the remarks (lời nhận xét) Friday on CNN, saying “I have a lot of experience dealing (giải quyết, xử trí) with men who sometimes get off the reservation in the way they behave (cư xử) and how they speak."

There's a reason why parties are loathed (ghét, ghê tởm) to work with Winston Peters in Government. They never really know where they stand. They either don't trust (tin tưởng) him at all or don't completely trust him - they never know when Winston might go off the reservation and surprise them.

Are you concerned (phân vân) about the ever-increasing prices of smartphones, want to get the scoop (thu được tin tức) on what the next Samsung Galaxy or Apple iPhone will be like? Thoughts (suy nghĩ) on Facebook and privacy (sự riêng tư), the latest data breach (rò rỉ dữ liệu), or would just love to get my take on what kind of camera to buy, or the latest smartphone photography trick (mẹo)? I'm here to help. Or maybe you want to go off the reservation and just want to reach out to me with a stump request (yêu cầu mang tính thách thức). You know I love to play classic TV theme (chủ đề) songs on the guitar. So hit me up with a request (yêu cầu), and I'll text (nhắn tin) you a link, if I can play it.

"Sea legs" nghĩa là gì?

Sóng bắt đầu từ gió, gió bắt đầu từ đâu? Anh cũng không biết nữa...Photo by Andrew Neel

"Sea (one's) legs" = Đôi chân biển cả -> Khả năng không bị say sóng và đi lại dễ dàng trên boong tàu. Nghĩa rộng hơn là quen với, thích nghi với điều gì đó.

Ví dụ
Beckham is getting his sea legs in this offense (lối tấn công) and with Mayfield. He caught the three TD passes Tuesday, and several other nice grabs, much to the delight of the crowd. They also connected twice in the two-minute drill (tập luyện) at the end to set up a 45-yard gamewinning field goal by Greg Joseph.

While Braunwyn has been loving “every minute” of being on the show, she admits she didn’t handle the drama well in the beginning — noting that Tamra Judge, 51, gave her the hardest time. “I definitely had to get my sea legs, so to speak. I went into this saying I was going to be 100% myself…but [there] was definitely some growing pains when you first get thrown into the mix.” Tune into the premiere of Season 14 of The Real Housewives of Orange County Bravo tonight, August 6, at 9 p.m.!

Whenever you see me somewhere succeeding in one area of my life, that almost certainly means I am failing in another area of my life…. That is the tradeoff. That is the Faustian bargain (mặc cả) one makes with the devil that comes with being a powerful working woman who is also a powerful mother. You never feel a hundred percent OK; you never get your sea legs; you are always a little nauseous (nôn mửa). Something is always lost. Something is always missing.

"Under the harrow" nghĩa là gì?

Thanh xuân lầm lỡ khi lỡ va phải ánh mắt nàng. Photo by Larm Rmah

"Under the harrow" -> Lâm vào hoàn cảnh khó khăn, gặp hoạn nạn hoặc chịu tổn thương.

Ví dụ
These are but the very first moments of “Under the Harrow,” an exquisitely (sắc sảo, thanh tú) taut (căng thẳng) and intense debut thriller by Flynn Berry.

Under the Harrow is absolutely engrossing (phải để nhiều tâm trí vào công việc), and yes, dark and chilling. It's the story of two sisters, and what happens when you're the one left behind after a grisly murder. But it's also one of the most uniquely told thrillers I've read in forever — and I read a lot of them. Here are 10 quotes from Flynn Berry's debut that will draw you in, and show you that it's the thriller of the summer. Without all the comparisons.

Having built a network of several pharmaceutical companies under the Harrow Health umbrella, Baum asked his drug formulation team if they could develop an alternative to Shkreli's Daraprim drug — then listed as $750 per tablet (viên), up from $13.50. It was possible and the cost would be "dirt cheap," they told him.

"Cushy job" nghĩa là gì?

"Cushy job" -> Việc làm nhẹ nhàng, dễ chịu, thoải mái và lương lại cao.

Ví dụ
In 2016, he quit his cushy job as Finance Director at a London tech startup, and started to develop his organic (hữu cơ) baby food idea.

You see, my parents heard that a company was hiring laborers (người lao động) and wanted me to get a summer job there. But I was 16, and I wanted to get a cushy, very part-time job with my friends at a local pool instead.

"I firmly believe governments should be about service; service that puts people first, not about finding a cushy job for family, friends or donors (người tặng)," Schreiner, the MPP for Guelph, said in an interview with CBC Kitchener-Waterloo.

"Play a blinder" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by  Clem Onojeghuo

"Play a blinder" -> Chơi/thể hiện một cách xuất sắc và rất tốt.

Ví dụ
Newcastle United could play a blinder if they were to strike a deal to sign Moussa Marega from Porto on deadline day next week.

What a great evening at the #PeakyBlinders #sneakypeaky world premiere. So chuffed to be there, but lips sealed (giữ bí mật, không tiết lộ) about the first episode - they played a blinder though!

He didn’t bring it up himself, but Birt recalled that in 1969 Davis played a blinder against Fitzroy, his best game of the season and, according to the coach then, Jack Clarke, one of his best ever – but got only two votes from the umpire. The three votes went to the old Lion, Kevin Murray, who Birt and Davis agree, played OK but was far less influential.

She said: ‘Terrific game Mark, you played an absolute blinder. I’m so proud of you and the rest of the team.’ Getting in one last dig, Piers joked: ‘You know what, you did play a blinder because only a blind man would have missed a goal by about that much.’ Mark – who admitted that he hadn’t been to bed since the match wrapped on Sunday – had enough of the taunts (lời mắng nhiếc, chửi bới), saying goodbye before ending the call.

"Never miss a trick" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Timothy Eberly

"Never miss a trick" = Không bao giờ bỏ lỡ một chiêu trò nào -> Luôn lợi dụng/tận dụng cơ hội hoặc hoàn cảnh để giành lợi cho mình.

Ví dụ
Donald Trump and Xi Jinping are missing a trick over trade.

Downing Street's newly belligerent (người tham chiến) line on Brexit is increasing support for Scottish independence – and Sturgeon never misses a trick.

There is no question that buying everything a college student needs is expensive. But Consumer Reports says you can take some of the sting out of it by never missing a trick over student discounts. From laptops to clothes, even cars and a late-night burger binge, the discounts are there. You just have to know where to find them. And, of course, you have to prove that you’re a student, either by producing a student ID at the register or an email address that ends with “edu.”

"Days on end" nghĩa là gì?

"Days on end" -> Vài ngày liên tục.

Ví dụ
“Sometimes when you’re not able to break the game open a couple of times in a row, days on end at times, you start to add a little pressure to your shoulders,” Kapler said. “It’s important to breathe, relax and just take your ‘A’ swing.”

"Meth messes with your brain, it makes you paranoid (chứng bệnh hoang tưởng), it makes you lose your memory and hallucinate (gợi ảo giác)," he said. "I couldn't eat. I didn't sleep for days on end."

So how do these socks even exist? How does anyone have the audacity (sự trơ tráo) to claim their socks can be worn concern-free for days on end? Isn’t that a health code violation? Owen Zhang, the PR liaison for MP, offered to clear things up. He explained that the company’s Magic Socks are made with a fabric (tấm vải) infused with (ngấm với) “silver, copper, and zinc,” which, he claims, kill a wide variety of bacteria and “prevents them from generating foot odor (mùi hôi chân).”

"A piece of mind" nghĩa là gì?

"A piece of (one's) mind" = Mảnh ghép tâm trí của ai -> Bộc lộ hết những suy nghĩ hay cảm xúc thật lòng nhất của mình, thường là thẳng thắn chỉ trích và thể hiện ra sự tức giận của mình.

Ví dụ
They like coming home and having piece of mind and not worrying about shootings and everything else going on around them,” Evans said.

Want to live large but still waiting for that pesky (quấy rầy) pay rise? Give us a piece of your mind and we might send you and 24 mates sailing.

For larger projects there's a whole range of case-by-case specialists you might want to call on, from interior designers to electrical consultants and landscape architects. This may feel like extravagant (quá mức) cash-splashing, but you can't put a price on piece of mind, and if they can preempt (giành ưu tiên trước) any potential problems you're probably saving money down the line.

"Have a heavy foot" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Mathias Arlund on Unsplash

"Have a heavy foot" = chân (ga) nặng -> nghĩa là lái xe rất nhanh, nhấn mạnh chân ga đó các bạn

Ví dụ
The naivete (ngây thơ) of youth (tuổi trẻ) may have a heavy foot on the gas pedal. Old age, with a shorter road to travel to its end, may pump the brake and look in the rearview (nhìn lại) more than needed.

If you have a heavy foot, you may well run riot (náo động) around the competition in the first 30 minutes, but then the lack of battery capacity will bite your rear end and disappointment will be your reward. The team from Buco and a first-time entry did brilliantly.

While driving in rain make sure that you don’t have a heavy foot on the break. Although most of the modern cars feature an ABS (Anti-lock Breaking System, hệ thống chống bó cứng phanh) system that too has a limit (giới hạn). To add to all this it is an electronic aided (hỗ trợ điện tử) feature. It might fail due to water at any time. Instead, use engine braking and gradually use the brake as an assist to it. Also, make sure that you ease off on the accelerating foot. In addition to that using cruise control is not advisable. So that your attention to driving remains in tune.

"When something sneezes, something else catches a cold" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Akson on Unsplash

"When (something) sneezes, (something else) catches a cold" = nếu một người ốm thì cả tập thể có khả năng ốm theo -> cá nhân luôn ảnh hưởng đến tập thể, dù là việc tốt hay xấu.

Ví dụ
And when the Federal Republic (Cộng hòa Liên bang) sneezes, the Old Continent usually catches a cold. This time, Germany may infect the rest of the world as well.

It may be stressed that the change in the US discount rate (tỉ lệ chiết khấu) is also very important for other countries of the world because the US is the biggest economy of the world; it influences the level of trade and economic growth in other countries. It is often said that when the US sneezes world catches cold.

When Tata Motors sneezes, the saying goes, the ancillary units (đơn vị phụ trợ) catch a cold. What happens when the automobile sector gets high fever and high power tariffs (thuế) pummel business is evident (thấy rõ) in Jharkhand’s biggest industrial zone, Adityapur and Gamharia in adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district.

"All Lombard Street to a China orange" nghĩa là gì?

Cam "made in China". Photo by Sharon McCutcheon on Unsplash

"All Lombard Street to a China orange" diễn tả sự có thể hoặc có khả năng xảy ra hoặc tỷ lệ cược nặng đô.

When my amanuensis (thư ký) adumbrates (cho biết trước) an issue he never lapses into a sesquipedalian (lôi thôi, dài dòng) mode. To do so, would basically be to go from Lombard Street to a China orange.

At Nairobi station, someone had unloaded the stolen cattle (gia súc bị trộm) and driven them, no doubt, into the Masai reserve (khu bảo tồn), and down to some manyatta which, as Robin said, it was all Lombard Street to a china orange belonged to Sammy's clan.

And an old-fashioned idiom, “Lombard-street to a China orange,” remarks on heavily weighted odds (tỷ lệ kèo nặng đô). But one of it’s most notable characteristics is its distinct street signs, which wound up influencing the logos of modern corporations.

"Two left feet" nghĩa là gì?

Trái...phải...trái...phải. Photo by Mitchell Orr

"Two left feet" = Hai bàn chân trái -> Thiếu sự hợp tác và sự ăn ý với nhau, đặc biệt khi nhảy.

Ví dụ
Nanaimo's annual bathtub (bồn tắm) race has attracted all types of competitors since the tradition began in 1967. But White is likely the only racer to do it with two left feet.

"My neighbor, Mrs. Rafaela, prepared this for my sister and me when we were growing up, but she would only give it to us if we danced," laughed Valenzuela. "I was very shy and I still have two left feet. But, if I was promised these, I would think about it!"

Well, the choreographer-turned-director feels that the film is still a possibility, and has approached Salman to work on the dance film, tentatively (ngập ngừng, không dứt khoát) titled Dancing Dad. Salman had mentioned then that he would need to get his dancing in order so that he does not look out of place. His early films saw him with two left feet, but he did improve his dancing style as years went by.

"Drop the mic" nghĩa là gì?

Hôm nay cho anh ta lố lăng xíu. Photo by Taylor

"Drop the mic" = Làm rớt cái mic -> Biểu diễn/thể hiện quá ấn tượng, quá phấn khích và quyết đoán.

Ví dụ
There couldn’t be a better time to drop the mic and walk offstage (sau sân khấu). She just brought the biggest event in the history of Northern Ireland, or Ireland, to the Emerald Isle. That, in turn, changed Portrush to the tune of $21 million.

It was the mic drop heard around the country. Before the game was over, Bedoya’s plea had gone viral and fans were raising money to pay whatever fine (tiền phạt) the league might levy (thu, đánh thuế).

Change can be scary. Health care for all sounds like socialism, just ask Fox News. We’re already spending almost $3.5 trillion (ngàn tỷ) per year on health care, with a majority of that being profits going into corporations, pharmaceutical firms, hospitals and doctors pockets. I’m waiting for Elizabeth Warren to say at the next Democratic debate, “Do you know a single senior complaining about Medicare? If it’s good enough for seniors, it should be good enough for all Americans.” Then drop the mic and walk off the stage. We need a Democratic candidate not afraid to promote bold new ideas and challenge the status quo (hiện trạng như trước) of corporations running our country.

"Only Nixon could go to China" nghĩa là gì?

"Only Nixon could go to China" nhấn mạnh về mặt chính trị rằng ai đó có thể làm được điều vô cùng phức tạp và nan giải. Cụm từ xuất hiện sau chuyến thăm Trung Quốc năm 1972 của Tổng thống Hoa Kỳ Richard Nixon, và chính thức thiết lập quan hệ ngoại giao giữa hai quốc gia.

Ví dụ
So the fact that the anti-communist (chống cộng) America magazine was now critical of Mr. McCarthy created an “only Nixon could go to China” moment, lending great credibility (tin tưởng) to the anti-McCarthy forces.

If a liberal Democrat (Đảng Dân chủ tự do) had tried it, he would have been labeled as soft on communism (chủ nghĩa cộng sản), but this was Richard Nixon, which led to the axiom (châm ngôn) “Only Nixon could go to China.”

Back in the previous century, it used to be said that “only Nixon could go to China.” In other words, only a longtime cold warrior and red-baiter (truy nã người cách mạng) like President Richard Nixon had the necessary tough-guy credentials (phẩm chất) to break with a tradition more than two decades old in February 1972.

"Up with the chickens" có nghĩa đen là thức dậy với những con gà, mà những con gà thường thức dậy sớm (tiếng gà ò ó o báo hiệu ngày mới bắt đầu). Suy ra, cả cụm "Up with the chickens" có nghĩa là thức dậy sớm, đặc biệt là trước lúc mặt trời mọc.

Ví dụ
I would say that I am, yeah. I grew up in a farming family, so I like to get out with the sun. What is it they say? "Up with the chickens?"

Rather than risk more interruptions from Nighttime Child, you go to bed, setting the alarm for early in the morning. Up with the chickens, you have the house to yourself.

That has had the effect of pushing back the body’s internal clock (đồng hồ sinh học) by three to five hours, he added, meaning that people are going to bed later but are “still trying to get up with the chickens.”

"More than Carter has liver pills" (cách nói cũ) có nghĩa là có nhiều cái gì, nhiều hơn cả "liver pills" (thuốc chữa gan) của Carter. Cụm từ xuất hiện vào năm 1868 bởi một loại thuốc được chế tạo có tên "Carter's Little Liver Pills".

Ví dụ
He's got more nerve than Carter has liver pills (probably only used around Dollywood and Cracker Barrels).

They are more football players suspended than Carter’s got liver pills. I think everybody, I think you’re gonna be suspended.

We have two assistant town managers. Why? We have more managers at that town hall (tòa thị chính) than Carter has liver pills.

He’s had a total of 70 fights that he’s gone through garnering (giành được) 61 wins and 7 losses and two draws (hòa), with 39 coming by way of knockout. He’s gotten more awards and accolades (cái ôm cho người thắng) than Carter has liver pills from Boxing Writers Association “Fighter Of The Year” 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2011.

"Ants in my pants" nghĩa là gì?

Làm việc phải thật tĩnh tâm Photo by Burst on Pexels

'Ants in the/one's pants' = có kiến trong quần (ai) (thế thì sẽ rất khó chịu đấy) -> nói về một người không thể ngồi yên vì sự lo lắng, thiếu kiên nhẫn, 'nhấp nha nhấp nhổm'.

Ví dụ
I was born with ants in my pants-it's very difficult for me to calm my brain. And when my brain isn't calm, my body isn't calm. It's something I've experienced my whole life, but it didn't become an issue until I grew up.

Yet my mum, like all other mums of that era, whenever I was getting ants in my pants, would just open the door and tell me to be home by a certain time. I don’t know if she ever considered the possibility that I might not show up at the front door at that predetermined hour.

Love, which I believe is the primary (đầu tiên) import. I had dated a Slovenian girl when I was living in London and had come to visit on some holidays and try to learn the language a bit. Later on when I was studying at Cambridge but had ants in my pants and wanted to try living in various European countries one of them I went to was Slovenia. I lived here for a few months and during that time wound up deciding to transfer to University of Ljubljana to finish my Ph.D and I met my current wife as well as sold my first book all at the same time. It seems like Kismet.

"Big woman on campus" = chị đại trong trường -> nghĩa là nữ sinh nổi tiếng trong trường (thường là đại học), cụm từ này đôi khi mang tính chế nhạo, nhất là nhắm tới những ai tự phụ/kiêu ngạo.

Ví dụ
Haley is the big woman on campus at Groff Community College. The students love her antics (trò hề), the faculty (khoa) loves her can-do spirit (tinh thần), and we love her because she is Stan’s daughter from American Dad. On her first day back after an extended holiday break, her faculty advisor informs (thông báo) her she’s only one credit away from graduation (lễ tốt nghiệp).

Although she initially (ban đầu) bridles at the idea of joining one of Sun Spring’s many clubs, Martha is convinced (thuyết phục) by Sheryl to go after an unfulfilled (chưa thể hoàn thành) dream from her childhood and start her own cheerleading group (nhóm cổ vũ). It’s an idea rejected (phản đối) by the community at first, particularly the big woman on campus, Vicki (Celia Weston), but the two women don’t let concerns about insurance or lack of interest get them down.

Hillary Clinton remains the big woman on campus in leafy, liberal Wellesley, Massachusetts. Everywhere else votes (bầu cho) her most likely to don her inauguration (nhậm chức) dress for the remainder of her days the way Miss Havisham forever wore that wedding dress.

"Nickel and dime (someone) to death" = cộng dồn các khoản nhỏ lại sẽ thành một khoản khổng lồ -> ngốn tiền. "Nickel and dime" là cụm từ chỉ những việc nhỏ/số tiền nhỏ, không quan trọng.

Ví dụ
BMW is going to Nickel-and-dime you to death, others likely to follow.

Where other games will nickel and dime players to death, CD Projekt Red has always stated that it prefers to "leave greed (lòng tham) to others."

Sure, Madden NFL Mobile may be a free game, but it’s loaded down with so many nickel-and-dime tactics that the whole thing feels more like an ATM than a game.

Options like adaptive cruise control (kiểm soát hành trình), lane centering (định tâm làn đường), parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring (phát hiện điểm mù) can increase the price, but Toyota won't nickel and dime you to death like the BMW with which the Supra shares its platform.

"A damp squib" nghĩa là gì?

Anh biết là em mà Photo by Emma Bauso from Pexels

'A damp squib' = một quả pháo ẩm -> một người hay vật, sự kiện, trải nghiệm gây thất vọng vì không như những gì mong đợi

Ví dụ
Boris Johnson may be creating political fireworks in Britain, but his first official visit here as Prime Minister was a damp squib. He didn't deliver a public speech nor did he hold a Press conference yesterday.

Any particular team can let you down horribly. Any single match can be a damp squib or a complete waste of time. But the possibility of something special happening is the most exciting thing on the planet. That is why, come this weekend, I’ll be settling down on the sofa for the Premier League’s return, as ready and raring to go as Harry Kane.

He said: “In 2017, Northern should have been delivering two trains an hour from Northwich to Manchester on the Mid Cheshire Line – it is still not doing that. When we hear of HS2’s costs spiralling (tăng lên dần dần) from £57 billion up to even £106 billion, people look at the Northern Powerhouse slogan as a real damp squib."

"Get the drift" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: darkness on Wallpaper Abyss

"Get the drift" có từ drift là mục đích, ý định; ý nghĩa, nội dung -> cụm từ này nghĩa là hiểu được/nắm được thông tin chung, thông tin khái quát của tình huống nào đó.

Ví dụ
Heritage Day isn't celebrated (ăn mừng) everywhere in Canada and is known by other names in some provinces (tỉnh). The days is called British Columbia Day in B.C., New Brunswick Day in New Brunswick, and Saskatchewan Day in.....Okay, you get the drift.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall will see you emerging (hiện ra) from the wreck of a galactic empire (đế chế thiên hà) with the express intention of building a brand new future. How you go about this is easy – take charge of one of six factions and use all your might (sức mạnh), wits (mưu mẹo), and skills to succeed. Okay, maybe it’s not easy, but you get the drift.

And after a few mass shootings (xả súng) with those, it wouldn’t be long before Eric Swalwell and his ilk would be calling to ban (cấm) all guns, because “common sense gun control” is always a moving goalpost. Succeed in doing that, and evil people will commit heinous
