"On his wrong side" nghĩa là gì?

phía bên kia nửa đêm... Photo courtesy Sean McGrath.

'On (someone's) wrong side' = bên không thuận của ai -> nghĩa là làm ai mất lòng, chọc tức ai (displeasing to someone; provoking someone's anger, contempt, or dismissal).

Ví dụ
If you got on his wrong side, he'd strap the relevant bit of religion into you.

Her bullying tactics, when the men get on her wrong side again, has grown morbid (không lành mạnh, bệnh hoạn) with time.

Trump’s blurring of lines between statesmanship (nghệ thuật trị quốc) and tradesmanship (điều hành chính sách thương mại) put India on his wrong side as far as trade was concerned.

Vivacious radio personality and actress (nữ diễn viên) Tinopona ‘‘Tin Tin’’ Katsande has forgiven all those who got on her wrong side during a tough period in her life, including the boyfriend who leaked (rò rỉ) the sex tape (băng quay lén làm tình) which unleashed a storm of events that left her down and out.

This week, Tommy Hilfiger introduced Tommy Jeans XPLORE , a new line of clothes and accessories that all come bugged with “smart chip technology,” which tracks how often you wear them and where you go with them on.

There’s even an exclusive game, sort of like Pokémon Go, that you can use to earn rewards like gift cards and concert tickets.

“It’s all of your must-have Tommy Jeans favorites with smart chip technology,” the brand’s website reads…

The company said in its announcement for the line that it hopes the chipped clothes and game will help create a “micro-community of brand ambassadors.” In essence, they’re rewarding you for wearing the products more often.

Having sex may feel like a badge of honor (huân chương danh dự) for many men, but for others, it’s an act that, once finished, brings about intense (rất mạnh, mãnh liệt) feelings (cảm xúc) of sadness (buồn bã). In a new study, researchers for the first time ever have identified that women aren’t the only ones who can suffer from this emotional tidal wave (cơn sóng cảm xúc) in the bedroom (phòng ngủ), better known as postcoital (sau khi giao hợp) dysphoria (tình trạng cảm thấy khó chịu, không sung sướng; lo lắng, bất an), or PCD.

PCD occurs when a person has, for all intents and purposes, enjoyable consensual (liên ứng) sex with a partner, but is met with “inexplicable (không lý giải nổi) feelings of tearfulness (buồn phát khóc, đẫm lệ), sadness, or irritability” afterwards.

...after a survey of 1,208 men from numerous countries — including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Russia — it’s clear that the condition is more common among males than one might expect. In fact, four in 10 participants recalled suffering from PCD symptoms at some point in their lives.

Lịch sử thành phố Lviv

chỉ trong 3 năm 1914-1917, 7 lần thay đổi chế độ, là chiến trường của nga, đức, ukraine, ba lan,...; giờ là một phần của ukraine,
-----
In the twentieth century, L’viv…, now a city in Ukraine, experienced war not just once but many times. Between 1914 and 1947, the city went through seven regime changes (thay đổi chế độ) and was shelled (bị nã pháo) by Russian, Ukrainian, German, and Soviet artillery (pháo) and bombed (bom) by German and Soviet planes (máy bay).

In November 1918, Poles and Ukrainians fought one another for control (kiểm soát) of the city. Twnety-five years later, both sides were prepared to battle it out again. During the same period, the city’s Jewish population lived through several pogroms (cuộc tàn sát người Do thái (dưới thời Sa hoàng); cuộc hành quyết (vì tôn giáo, chủng tộc)) and experienced repeated bouts (đợt) of anti-Semitic (bài Do thái) violence (bạo lực) up until the time when almost all of Jews of L’viv were murdered (giết) by Nazi Germany.

After World War II, the Soviet government forced the Polish population to leave the city…In 1914 half of the city’s population was Roman Catholic (mostly Poles), 28 percent were Jewish, and 18 percent were Greek Catholic (about two-thirds of them Ruthenians/Ukrainians). By 1947, L’viv had become an almost homogeneously (đồng nhất, thuần nhất) Ukrainian city…Approximately 80 percent of the city’s’ inhabitants had arrived during or after the war (hậu chiến).

That is all from p.1 of Christoph Mick’s study of L’viv.

Known as Lemberg in German and Lwów in Polish, the city of L’viv in modern Ukraine was in the crosshairs of imperial and national aspirations for much of the twentieth century. This book tells the compelling story of how its inhabitants (Roman Catholic Poles, Greek Catholic Ukrainians, and Jews) reacted to the sweeping political changes during and after World Wars I and II. The Eastern Front shifted back and forth, and the city changed hands seven times. At the end of each war, L'viv found itself in the hands of a different state. While serious tensions had existed among Poles, Ukrainians/Ruthenians, and Jews in the city, before 1914 eruptions of violence were still infrequent.

The changes of political control over the city during World War I led to increased intergroup frictions (bất đồng, xích mích, va chạm), new power relations, and episodes of shocking violence, particularly against Jews. The city’s incorporation (sáp nhập vào) into the independent Polish Republic in November 1918 after a brief period of Ukrainian rule sparked (khuấy động) intensified conflict. Ukrainians faced discrimination (phân biệt đối xử) and political repression (đàn áp chính trị) under the new government (chính quyền mới), and Ukrainian nationalists (dân tộc chủ nghĩa) attacked the Polish state. In the 1930s, anti-Semitism increased sharply.

During World War II, the city experienced first Soviet rule, then Nazi occupation, and finally Soviet conquest (chinh phục, chinh phạt). The Nazis deported (trục xuất) and murdered nearly all of the city’s large Jewish population, and at the end of the war the Soviet forces expelled the city’s Polish inhabitants.

Based on archival research conducted in L’viv, Kiev, Warsaw, Vienna, Berlin, and Moscow, as well as an array of contemporary printed sources and scholarly studies, this book examines how the inhabitants of the city reacted to the changes in political control (kiểm soát chính trị), and how ethnic and national ideologies (tư tưởng dân tộc và quốc gia) shaped (định hình) their dealings with each other.

"With bated breath" nghĩa là gì?

hồi hộp chờ đợi cuộc giải cứu. Photo courtesy Michael Coghlan.

'With bated breath' có từ bate là bớt, giữ lại (hold, restraint) -> = 'nín thở' -> nghĩa là náo nức, hồi hộp (eagerly or anxiously = "holding one's breath"; today it is also used somewhat ironically, indicating one is not all that eager or anxious).

Ví dụ
Thai cave rescue had the world thralled (cảnh nô lệ, lệ thuộc; bắt phải phục tùng, áp chế) with bated breath.

Cayetano engaged us in small talk while we all waited with bated breath for the presidential debate (tranh luận giữa các ứng cử viên tổng thống) to start.

The world has been waiting with bated breath for more than a decade for an album from dancehall's newest queen, Spice.

There is something compelling about such rescues and the race against time. Those old enough will remember the ill-fated (xấu số, bất hạnh, bạc mệnh) Apollo 13 mission and how the world watched with bated breath as the spacecraft (tàu vũ trụ) was guided back to Earth.

When Facebook moves into its new offices in Mountain View this fall, a signature Silicon Valley perk will be missing — there won’t be a corporate cafeteria with free food for about 2,000 employees.

In an unusual move, the city barred companies from fully subsidizing meals inside the offices, which are part of the Village at San Antonio Center project, in an effort to promote nearby retailers. The project-specific requirement passed in 2014, attracting little notice because the offices were years away from opening.

It came in response to local restaurants that said Google, the city’s biggest employer, was hurting their businesses by providing free meals, according to John McAlister, a Mountain View councilman.

On Tuesday, the Santa Barbara City Council unanimously (nhất trí, đồng lòng) passed (thông qua) a bill (dự luật) that prohibits (ngăn cấm) restaurants (nhà hàng), bars, and other food service businesses from handing out plastic straws (ống hút bằng nhựa) to their customers (khách hàng). …Santa Barbara… has banned even compostable straws, permitting only drinking tubes made from nonplastic materials such as paper, metal, or bamboo. The city also has made a second violation* of its straw prohibition both an administrative infraction (sự vi phạm (luật, hiệp định...)) carrying a $100 fine and a misdemeanor (tội nhẹ, khinh tội), punishable by a maximum fine of $1,000 and up to six months in jail. Each contraband (buôn lậu) straw or unsolicited plastic stirrer counts as a separate violation, so fines and jail time could stack up quickly.

…Assistant City Attorney Scott Vincent tells me criminal charges would be pursued only after repeat violations and if there were aggravating circumstances.

The naked lovers can be seen standing up through the sunroof (cửa mái: ô cửa ở nóc xe ôtô có thể mở ra để không khí và ánh nắng lọt vào) of their silver Mercedes as the car remains stationary on the St Petersburg Ring Road.

The woman throws her head back in ecstasy (phê, đê mê) as the brazen (trơ tráo, vô liêm sỉ, mặt dày) couple romp (nô đùa) in front of dozens of stunned (choáng váng, sững sờ) onlookers (người xem, khán giả).

The line of traffic slowly begins to move as the video comes to an end.

Local media report the man gave the woman’s hand a kiss after their very public lovemaking session.

The Belgian Naturism Federation has come to the defence of its burgeoning membership after the Flemish wildlife agency blocked an application for a second nudist beach (bãi tắm khỏa thân) in the country on the grounds that bathers’ “subsidiary activities” would pose a threat to a rare bird.

The Flemish Agency for Nature and Woodland informed the region’s environment minister, Joke Schauvliege, that the lark (chim chiền chiện), whose name derives from the feathers on its head that rise up during courtship, would be alarmed by the activity and would flee.

A subsequent suggestion that a fence could be established around the dunes (đụn cát, cồn cát) where the birds breed was met with scepticism. Steve Vandenberghe, the local mayor in Bredene, where Belgium’s first and only nudist beach is located, told the Flemish daily newspaper Het Nieuwsblad that it would not offer much of a deterrence. “Barbed wire against nudists? Pff. As if a man without clothes cannot get over a barbed wire,” he said.

It's nearly impossible to avoid encountering the occasional nude man in public while living in the Bay Area, but still, it's not every day that a stark naked cyclist blazes past you on the highway.

Yet that was the rush hour spectacle that greeted a number of commuters Wednesday morning on Highway 101 in San Jose

Multiple 911 callers spotted the man, nude but for a well-groomed goatee (râu dê), cycling between Story Road and Alum Rock Avenue with nary a care in the world. Three units were out looking for the man, who was spotted multiple times on the north and southbound lanes of Highway 101 — biking against traffic, at times — but he was not located, Lee said.

According to the arrest affidavit (lời khai), Kelton Griffin went over to the victim's house to go on a date. Police said Griffin asked to drive her car because she 'did not know where he wanted to take her.'

She agreed and the two switched seats (đổi chỗ). The suspect drove to a gas station and asked the woman to go inside and pick up some cigars. After she entered the business, Griffin drove off in her car.

The victim tried to call him several times. But, he did not answer his cars and blocked her on social media.

Court records said she also let her family know her car was stolen by Kelton. On the same day, the victim's God sister texted her and said Griffin asked her on a date. He was picking her up from her grandmother's house.

"Speak under her breath" nghĩa là gì?

Secrets. Photo courtesy Quasic.

'Speak under one's breath' nghĩa là nói khẽ, nói thì thầm, nói thì thào (spoken in such a soft, quiet voice that others cannot hear it distinctly).

Ví dụ
Judy muttered (nói khẽ, nói thầm; lẩm bẩm, cằn nhằn) an expletive (lời chêm vào, lời nói tục tĩu) under her breath, then smiled.

Gadsby’s delivery, throughout the Netflix special, is both whimsical (không thực tế, giàu tưởng tượng; kỳ dị) and droll (khôi hài, buồn cười; trò hề). She has a habit of delivering her punchlines (phần cuối của chuyện cười) almost under her breath, with an impish (tinh quái, tinh ma quỷ quái) grin (cười toe toét, cười nhe răng).

Before Trump signed his executive order, there were calls in the UK for the prime minister, Theresa May, to cancel his forthcoming visit until the policy was rescinded (hủy bỏ, bãi bỏ). “Until the children are reunited,” Clinton mutters under her breath. Her expression (nét mặt) suggests she regrets the interjection as soon as I ask her to repeat it. “I’m not going to speak for your government,” she corrects herself hastily (vội vã).

“So what’s going to happen?” asked Walter Lemos, one of José’s uncles, at his home one afternoon. “Even the boy prefers to stay in America,” José responded. “He knows there’s more for him there.” “But there’s no love like a parent’s love,” Lemos said under his breath, shaking his head.

The man who was slammed to the ground by a Savannah waitress after he groped the young woman is in a relationship - and has two young daughters.

...Cherwinski and Erica Martin have been together for 11 years, and she was with him at the restaurant when he groped their server and was arrested.

Cherwinski is also now facing criminal charges after Holden responded to his grope (vuốt ve, mơn trớn) by grabbing him by the arm, pulling him towards her and then slamming him to the ground.

One of the girl's co-workers then called the Savannah Police Department who sent an officer to the restaurant. After reviewing the surveillance footage (video giám sát) taken inside the restaurant, police arrested him and handed him over to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.

Ever feel like your doctor (bác sĩ) is in a rush (vội vã) to get you out the door (tống ra cửa) when you come in for a visit? You’re not just imagining things. A new study finds physicians  (bác sĩ) give a patient (bệnh nhân) an average of just 11 seconds to describe (miêu tả) their issue (thể trạng) before cutting them off (ngắt lời).

Researchers from the University of Florida determined that for all the waiting we do after we arrive at a medical practitioner’s office, its the doctors who seem to have the least amount of patience (kiên nhẫn).

“Our results suggest that we are far from achieving patient-centered care,” says study co-author Naykky Singh Ospina in a release, adding that medicals specialists proved to be in the biggest hurry, compared to primary care (chăm sóc ban đầu) physicians.

"Keep your breath to cool your porridge" nghĩa là gì?

hổ ăn cháo cũng phải nước xương dê hầm... Photo courtesy various brennemans.

'Keep one's breath to cool one's porridge" nghĩa là hãy khuyên lấy bản thân mình (look after your own affairs, and do not put your spoke in another person's wheel. Husband your strength to keep your own state safe and well, and do not waste it on matters in which you have really no concern).

Ví dụ
At the end of the standing ovation, Keogh remembered Maureen Potter and quoted her (with many members of the audience joining in): “If you enjoyed the show tell your friends, and if you haven’t, then save your breath to cool your porridge.”

The entire state administration went into hiding, as anarchy reigned supreme. The phones of those in authority sank into a deafening, deadly silence. So, here you have the essence of good governance: when in trouble you better take care of yourself. Don't invite trouble. Stay at home. Spare your breath to cool your porridge.

Phạm Hạnh

"Waste your breath" nghĩa là gì?

'Waste one's breath' nghĩa là đưa ra lời khuyên mà chẳng mấy tác dụng, không được nghe theo (talk or give advice without effect); hoài hơi, phí lời.

Ví dụ
Don't waste your breath complaining to Equifax about data breach.

Don't waste your breath proclaiming what's really important to you. How you spend your time says it all.

Don't waste your breath crying over people who won't give you the love and nurture you deserve. Boundaries are sacred.

You had a curfew (giới nghiêm) that you were forced to adhere to, no matter what. There were no ifs, ands or buts on this one, so you didn’t waste your breath arguing with your parents every Friday night. You just waved your mates adieu approximately an hour before they were gonna mosey home, and prayed that you didn’t miss out on too much.

"Conscientious objector" nghĩa là gì?

Coretta Scott King (l) and Dr. Ralph Abernathy (c) honor Muhammad Ali (r) after his win in a boxing match against Jerry Quarry. Photo courtesy Tullio Saba.

'Conscientious objector' = 'người phản đối theo đúng lương tâm' -> nghĩa là người từ chối nhập ngũ vì cho rằng điều đó trái đạo lý (a person who for reasons of conscience objects to serving in the armed forces).

Ví dụ
The Israeli army discharged conscientious objector Ayelet Brachfeld on Tuesday after imprisoning her for 100 days.

A South Korean conscientious objector was sentenced to a jail term Tuesday, despite the recent Constitutional Court order for the government to introduce civilian forms of service for them.

The film highlights a moment in Ali's career where he was set to stage a world comeback. He had been recently released from prison after refusing to join the Vietnam War as a conscientious objector.

The latest sentence is also against the United Nations Human Rights Council, which recognizes the right of everyone to have conscientious objection to military service as a “legitimate exercise of the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.”

"Boat people" nghĩa là gì?

Photo courtesy San José Public Library.

'Boat people' nghĩa là người tị nạn chính trị bỏ xứ ra đi bằng thuyền; thuyền nhân.

Ví dụ
Although most of the refugees on Nauru have been there for five years, some of the children are younger than five years old. They were born there to refugee women. They are classified in Australia’s Migration Act as “transitory children”. They are treated as boat people, even though they have lived their entire lives in detention on Nauru.

The territory (Hong Kong) has seen rapid changes to its humanitarian policies since the days of so-called “Vietnamese boat people” – a term used to describe the 200,000 refugees arriving following the Fall of Saigon in 1975 – which prompted the city to declare itself a “port of first asylum.”

During this time, as governor of Iowa, Ray personally kept the culture of the Tai Dam ethnic group from Laos intact by offering them a home in Iowa in which they could resettle as a people. He was the first governing leader anywhere in the world to step forward to accept the “boat people” refugees from Vietnam who were drowning and dying at sea.

The 1979 Geneva meeting took place at a moment of crisis. In the months leading up to it, an exodus of boat people fleeing the south of Vietnam had escalated dramatically, driven in large measure by nationalization (quốc hữu hóa) of private enterprises (doanh nghiệp tư nhân) in the south of Vietnam, mistreatment (ngược đãi) and crackdowns (đàn áp) on religious communities, continued repression (trấn áp), and official encouragement of departure as well as expulsion (trục xuất) of ethnic Chinese (Hoa kiều).

Lesson one in our textbook chapter on managing incentives is “You get what you pay for (even when what you pay for is not exactly what you want)”. Case in point is the California cleanup of the 2017 wildfires, at $280,000 per site it’s four times more expensive than similar past cleanups and by far the costliest cleanup in CA history. The state emphasized speed and farmed the job out to the Army Corp of Engineers who hired contractors who were paid by the ton excavated! Paying by the ton created highly u̶n̶p̶r̶e̶d̶i̶c̶t̶a̶b̶l̶e̶ predictable consequences as KQED reports:

…Dan said he saw workers inflate their load weights with wet mud. Sonoma County Supervisor James Gore said he heard similar stories of subcontractors actually being directed to mix metal that should have been recycled into their loads to make them heavier.

“They [contractors] saw it as gold falling from the sky,” Dan said. “That is the biggest issue. They can’t pay tonnage on jobs like this and expect it to be done safely.”

…Krickl pointed to where his home used to stand. It’s a 6-foot deep depression that he affectionately called his “pond”.

That “pond” was created when contractors removed the foundation, soil and an entire concrete pad for Krickl’s garage, leaving behind a large hole.

Here’s my favorite part:

So many sites were over-excavated that the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services recently launched a new program to refill the holes left behind by Army Corps contractors. That’s estimated to cost another $3.5 million.

"Rock the boat" nghĩa là gì?

If you 'rock the boat' (khiến thuyền chao đảo), you do or say something that will upset people or cause problems -> nghĩa là nói hoặc làm điều gì khiến người khác phiền lòng hoặc gây rắc rối.

Ví dụ
Sena, which is playing a second fiddle (đóng vai trò thứ yếu) at the Centre and in Maharashtra while sharing power with BJP, also sent a message that the party will not rock the boat and destabilise (gây mất ổn định) the government.

In the face of a man in a position of power abusing that power and thinking he was doing nothing wrong, I kept my head down and I stirred the cocktail in my mixing glass. I didn’t want to rock the boat, either. I was new, and I wanted people to like me.

In extreme cases, Francis said, clergy can display what psychologists call “the dark triad”: narcissism* (tự yêu mình, quá chú ý chăm sóc vẻ đẹp của mình), Machiavellianism and psychopathy (bệnh thái nhân cách). But he also warned that more rigorous (khắt khe, nghiêm ngặt) testing could exacerbate (làm trầm trọng thêm) a trend in the Church of England to recruit conventional clergy who do not rock the boat.

Public sector net borrowing figures out this morning, are unlikely to rock the boat and today could prove to be another day where Sterling is driven largely by external factors (yếu tố ngoại lai). Next week, investors will begin to focus on the next Bank of England meeting in the first week of August, which is shaping up to be a fairly significant risk event for the Pound.

"Miss the boat" nghĩa là gì?

việt nam ko thể lỡ lần nữa... Photo courtesy Helge V. Keitel.

'Miss the boat' = lỡ chuyến tàu -> nghĩa là để mất cơ hội quý báu.

Ví dụ
If you want to make six figures and help out people in need, there’s no better starting point than a degree in labor law. Ensuring that those who work every day to put meals on their family’s table are safe and properly compensated (đền bù xứng đáng) is no small task. Law grads are landing jobs at a higher pace than in previous years, and there’s no reason for you to miss the boat.

"Despite being on the cusp of a new wave of broadcasting technology, there seems to be less enthusiasm compared to what happened previously. I believe it may be due to more people abandoning (từ bỏ) conventional (truyền thống) TV for YouTube and the various commercial formats streamed via the internet. We're now in an era where the viewer can select the programs he wants to see, and watch them when he wants, so TV's raison d'etre has been diminishing". The TV manufacturers and broadcasters better get their act together, and soon, or they'll miss the boat, Shukan Jitsuwa concludes.

As I started to write about onboarding, I thought about how people miss the boat on how much impact it has. That made me ask: Why? When organizations spend millions of hours, brain cells and dollars on their recruiting efforts, why do they drop the ball on a no-brainer opportunity to keep that positive momentum going? That’s when I realized the reason: Onboarding is the second impression. Nobody has been repeating for years that the second impression matters as much as the first. Maybe that’s why some organizations give onboarding minimal attention even when the numbers prove how essential it is.

"Sail in the same boat" nghĩa là gì?

'Sail in the same boat' nghĩa là hành động chung, cùng hành động.

Ví dụ
Condemning government (lên án chính phủ) while sailing in the same boat reeks of hypocrisy (đạo đức giả). It would be unacceptable and sad, if the allegations are true that funds were abused (lạm dụng), misappropriated (lấy tiền một cách sai trái để sử dụng cho mình; biển thủ) or diverted (làm trệch hướng, thay đổi mục đích).

For the first three years, whenever Ouma gave blood for a VLT, he had to wait for one month before he could get his results. And sailing in the same boat were the more than one million HIV positive (dương tính) patients across the country.

This emotional delusion (ảo tưởng cảm xúc) created by media (truyền thông) is not the real cause (nguyên nhân thực sự) of this suicide (tự tử). More important is the fact that this young man saw such a little value in his existence that he could sacrifice it for such a trivial reason. It is this phenomenon that needs our serious attention, especially because most of us average people are sailing in the same boat.
