"Tell the whole world" nghĩa là gì?

"Tell the whole world" = nói cho cả thế giới biết -> nghĩa là tiết lộ, lan truyền (thông tin) cho nhiều người.

Ví dụ
For Bangladeshi women, it took 40 years to break their silence, but the Rohingya women were ready to tell the whole world what had happened to them, how it happened and who did it.

The fact that both of them wanted to subvert (lật đổ) the will of the people, wanted to tell the whole world and the United States, that we did not have an honest election. I cannot imagine any senator doing that and then serving on Judiciary (Tư pháp).

A Cook County prosecutors (công tố viên) said in court Monday that Ramona Martinez-Ayala discovered naked pictures of her husband's mistress, when he failed to log out of his Facebook account and she was "so angry" that she decided to "tell the whole world about it" by publicly posting the explicit images on Facebook.

"Come upon the town" nghĩa là gì?

"Come upon the town" = lên phố -> nghĩa là trở thành gái điếm.

Ví dụ
The hard life of a woman from a geisha to come upon the town.

The two-sided life of many Japanese women: During the day, working as a laborer, at night coming upon the town.

Few took pity on the poor woman who, abandoned penniless by a cruel lover, had no recourse but to come upon the town in order to survive.

I considered other options before I came upon the town when I was 19, but in the end I decided I needed money to go to school first. I admit to work in this profession for money, and for the time and flexibility of the job.

"Household name" nghĩa là gì?

"Household name" -> nghĩa là người, vật hoặc nhãn hiệu nổi tiếng, được biết đến rộng rãi.

Ví dụ
NOYNOY is a household name in Greece, with generations of children growing up drinking this famous milk, which first hit Greek supermarket shelves in 1929. It is a distinct (khác biệt) form of evaporated milk that has become an integral part of the daily diet of the Greek family.

Starting from a small tuck (bánh kẹo) shop to making Bikaneri bhujia a must-have in every pantry, Bikanervala has become a household name. It launched its FMCG brand Bikano in 1998 to make traditional snacks a part of everyone’s snacking palate.

The Twitter world was on fire Wednesday after a stirring poem read by 22-year-old Amanda Gorman, who became a household name by the time her roughly five-minute rendition (màn thể hiện) was over. If you didn’t know much about Gorman before her speech, here are some things to learn.

In the last fifteen years or so, Lady Gaga has become a household name for many Americans. The singer, songwriter and actress has had an incredible (phi thường) career 11 Grammy Awards, multiple chart-topping singles and spectacular performances on both television and the big screen.

Ví dụ
Ullswater, Wordsworth writes in the book, is "perhaps, upon the whole, the happiest combination of beauty and grandeur (sự hùng vĩ), which any of the Lakes affords".

Pope (Giáo hoàng) John dreamed that through the council the Holy Spirit's gifts would flow abundantly upon the whole church for the benefit of the entire world, because the Spirit alone has the capacity to change hearts from within, not by external force but by interior persuasion.

"Herd bias" nghĩa là gì?

"đầu tư" vào bãi cỏ dại này ngon đấy... Photo by Juan Martin Lopez on Unsplash.

These new investors (nhà đầu tư), who are too optimistic (quá lạc quan) and have little experience (rất ít kinh nghiệm) with strong market fluctuations (dao động thị trường), tend to panic (hoảng loạn) and act in accordance to "herd mentality" when the market starts going down.

Schroders personal finance director Claire Walsh said: “Herd bias can be responsible for driving classic investment mistakes – such as, buying high and selling low or chasing potential investment bubbles (bong bóng đầu tư) like Bitcoin."

Investors who make investment decisions on the basis that ‘everyone else is doing it’ are succumbing to what is known as ‘herd bias’, choosing to believe that ‘everybody can’t be wrong’. This groupthink bias operates on the basis of safety in number where investors take comfort in the fact that everyone is jumping on the same bandwagon. Investing in a share because everyone else is doing the same is fundamentally flawed decision-making, primarily because the decision is not based on research but on the actions of the collective.

Yeah, there was just this general sense of there's a pandemic. There's a - there's this coronavirus thing. It seems pretty bad. It looks pretty bad in Italy. Maybe I should do something. Maybe I should do something. But nobody's really - and then there's that moment where you're like, oh, I need to get toilet paper. I need to get food. I need to get masks. I need to sell my shares. It's too late. Everyone's doing the same thing at the same time. It's the herd instinct.

"Be the (absolute) limit" có the limit là người/điều quá quắt -> cụm từ này nghĩa (lóng) là nguyên nhân gây sự bực bội, cáu gắt hoặc căng thẳng.

Ví dụ
I can't sit next to that crazy guy. His smell is the limit!

Stop yelling at her, you're making her a fool. Don't be the limit, please!

Hey, you're the absolute limit. No one likes to be friends with you if you keep staring at (nhìn chằm chằm) them in public.

"Be the matter" nghĩa là gì?

"Be the matter" -> nghĩa là nguyên nhân gây ra vấn đề khó khăn và rắc rối.

Ví dụ

The Centre's plea against the proposed tractor rally by farmers on Republic Day, saying it is the matter for the police to decide.

“Trinidad and Tobago’s position is crystal clear—we have opened our doors at Caricom speaking with one voice to all sides in the Venezuelan issue under the understanding that the difficulties in Venezuela are the matter for the people of Venezuela,” Rowley said. During the sitting, Annisette-George turned Princes Town MP Barry Padarath’s requested for debate as an urgent public matter on Government’s continued recognition of Maduro as President of Venezuela.

"As for the terms of any possible loan, this is the matter for the IMF in line with established procedures to ensure the effective use of such support. It is not the first time that the IMF gives financial assistance with conditionality and they have their ways and means to ensure effective use of the support they have granted," Mr. Borrell added.

"Make a dead set upon" -> nghĩa là nhất định, kiên quyết hay nỗ lực chống lại ai, điều gì -> nghĩa là nhất định, kiên quyết hay nỗ lực chống lại ai, điều gì.

Ví dụ
Members of congress made a dead set upon the president to prevent him from vetoing the legislation.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Bộ Ngoại giao ) said it made a dead set upon the decision to remove barriers in interactions (sự tác động với nhau) between US officials and Taiwan.

Chancellor (Thủ tướng nước Đức) Angela Merkel made a dead set upon the long-term recession in Germany at a time of the global economic crisis, by introducing economic stimulus packages and shortening the working hours. Accordingly, employees work less, but the government increases their income higher. In addition, Ms. Merkel also takes advantage of other favorable conditions such as low bond interest rates and strong position as an exporter.

"Be tall in the saddle" nghĩa là cái gì?

"Be tall in (one's)/the saddle" = ngẩng cao đầu cưỡi ngựa -> nghĩa là giữ được vẻ kiêu hãnh, nghiêm nghị hoặc tô thêm thần thái, điềm tĩnh của mình.

Ví dụ
Brady Jandreau is tall in the saddle in “The Rider,” the best movie of 2018 no matter what the Academy says.

Dad said Bass sat so tall in his saddle, and had such a large horse. His badge (huy hiệu) always shone brightly on his vest.

"If it was 1898 instead of 1998," Hallock asserts, "he'd be tall in the saddle. Today, instead of a saddle, it might be his Navy surplus rubber raft.

Bill Bradley was tall in his saddle in his family life, in business and most certainly among the ranks of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary’s mounted unit, which credits his generosity with its revival. “Mr. Bradley was the sole reason the mounted unit is reinstated with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, in my view,” said Const. George Horan, who has been with the unit since its re-establishment in 2003.

"Be tailor-made" nghĩa là gì?

"Be tailor-made" = được may đo (riêng) -> nghĩa là rất phù hợp cho ai/điều gì.

Ví dụ
"Tom Brady can't play any worse than what he did Sunday. The Panthers are a perfect matchup. This is tailor-made for Tom, he should pick the Panthers apart."

In fact, Silva’s numbers are really impressive when looking at his seven Tests played in Asia, with a century and five fifties helping him average 56.60. With the likes of Jimmy Anderson and Olly Stone unlikely to find much in the way of assistance from the surface in Galle, Silva’s game will be tailor-made to the challenges likely to face him over the next few days.

With all the hoopla (trò chơi ném vòng) surrounding Deshaun Watson versus Cal McNair/Jack Easterby, the number of “(insert national NFL media figure here) goes crazy over Deshaun Watson situation” articles, op-ed pieces, and YouTube videos is off the charts. NFL fans (whether you’re a Traveling Texan, Battle Red Diehard, or you root for one of the other 31 teams) are all buying in because everyone short of Chiefs fans would love nothing more than to have Deshaun Watson quarterback their team. For guys like ESPN’s Steven A. Smith, who has made a career out of turbo-charged pot-stirring, this storyline is tailor made to keep him busy.

“Be still in the game” nghĩa là gì?

“Be still in the game” = vẫn giữ cuộc chơi -> nghĩa là vẫn cầm cự, là người thi đấu (tới cùng) dù khó khăn, thách thức.

Ví dụ
Even the one who didn't come up with it last time is still in the game. “If they want to come back to us and make it exclusive (dành riêng, độc quyền), then they can.

The proliferation (sự phát triển) of platforms (nền tảng, mô hình) over the last couple of decades, and the slowdown of local production during the pandemic, have made British imports ubiquitous (có mặt khắp nơi) across television (including two Anglophile subscription services, Acorn TV and BritBox). But for many years they were nearly the sole province of PBS, largely presented under the umbrellas of “Masterpiece” (originally “Masterpiece Theatre”) and “Mystery!” (now “Masterpiece Mystery”); they are still in the game.

Guatemala appeared to be still in the game, though with Trump out of the equation, its longevity there should probably be regarded as questionable as it comes under fire for how it had to stop the violent lead caravan (đoàn lữ hành) elements. On behalf of Guatemala, Foreign Minister Pedro Brolo Vila called out Honduras for a failure of will and tactics (thủ đoạn, mẹo) that put the hot potato in his country. He said that instead of Honduran promises to deploy a large contingent of security forces, the Honduran police who were deployed ended up accompanying the migrants (người nhập cư) "to our borders, where unfortunately we saw how violently they entered, violating Guatemalan territorial sovereignty (chủ quyền lãnh thổ)."

“Be your spiritual home” nghĩa là gì?

“Be one’s spiritual home” = mái ấm tinh thần -> nghĩa là nơi hoặc môi trường lý tưởng cho ai sống vui vẻ và hạnh phúc.

Ví dụ
“I love London, I’ve never struggled to make friends but this is my spiritual home, it’s the people, the town, rugby obviously but it’s more than that, I just love it here.”

If the answer is yes, the newly-launched branch of the Turning Point International Christian Centre at TUT next to the R40 towards Barberton, could be your spiritual home.

Uttlesford District Council chairman Martin Foley has walked more than half of his 500 mile virtual challenge, from Uttlesford to Scotland. He and daughter Nicola set off to cover 500 miles to raise money for the Stroke Association. They landed on the idea of walking to the Isle of Iona – which is roughly 500 miles from Uttlesford and is their spiritual home in the Hebrides.

“Be my middle name” nghĩa là gì?

I'm a nature-lover. Photo by Patrick Hendry

“Be one’s middle name” = tên đệm của mình -> nghĩa là đặc tính dễ dàng nhận thấy hoặc liên quan chặt chẽ với bản thân; thường được dùng một cách hài hước, châm biếm.

Ví dụ
"I am inordinately clumsy (hậu đậu, vụng về) and butterfingers (người vụng về, lóng ngóng) could be my middle name but my thumb is a spectacular green," Twinkle Khanna posted.

Music is his middle name. Seventy summers on, Pandit Satyasheel Deshpande continues with his tryst (cuộc hẹn hò) with Indian classical music with the raw energy of a rugby enthusiast (người đam mê môn bóng bầu dục). Leo, despite all the financial twists and turns of 2020, you’ve managed to dodge quite a few bullets. Call it luck, but it’s that belly of fire and unmatched determination of yours that you have to thank for it. This year glory (and a possible pay rise) can be yours once again, so long as you’re willing to put in the work. Lucky for you, hard work is your middle name. So, if you do score that pay rise, make sure to get yourself a high-interest savings account so you can earn some extra bang for your buck.

“Be yours for the taking”

“Be one's for the taking” = cái của mình để lấy -> nghĩa là có sẵn hoặc dễ dàng cho mình có.

Ví dụ
You’ll have a burning desire to escape your routine but may feel that certain obligations prevent you from doing so. Use any delays to re-evaluate and plan a short get away physically or mentally. A work project or important task is yours for the taking. This is a springboard (nguồn sức bật) to bigger and better things so make the most of it.

Once the post-lockdown crowds descended upon the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains this summer, social distancing in the great outdoors suddenly seemed like an improbable task. Luckily, it's a well-kept secret that the off-season is actually the best season in many of these National Parks—once the crowds have departed, the wide open spaces are yours for the taking. (After consulting the NPS COVID-19 guidelines, of course). From the deserts of the southwest to the tundra (lãnh nguyên) of Alaska, here are the top National Parks to visit in winter.

In a nation that’s produced some of the best surfers in the world, Sally Fitzgibbons stands out amongst the pack. The professional surfer became one of just 18 athletes to qualify through the World Surfing League championship tour for selection for the Tokyo Olympic Games (whenever they may happen). The 28-year-old is a three-time World Title runner-up and with her continued success in the surf, the Olympic Games are hers for the taking.

“Be my baby” nghĩa là gì?

“Be one’s baby” = là con cưng của ai -> nghĩa là việc của riêng ai hoặc thuộc trách nhiệm của họ; nghĩa khác là thứ quý giá, được yêu chuộng của ai.

Ví dụ
Tell me what you want to drink, you are my baby. And who is going to talk about us? If we don't let ourselves be seen.

He built the RoughRiders from scratch into a consistent winner. They are his baby, why he has remained in Eastern Iowa despite lots of overtures from college programs and professional teams.

He and others in the organization are out on the road scouting a ton right now. There is a May draft they are preparing for, and they are going to be ready.

The business of making video games is often a passion project, said Dmitri Williams, an associate professor of communication at the University of Southern California. “Of course it’s our baby, and we’re willing to put in the extra hours to do it,” he said of game developers. “But when you’re essentially in service to the man, it’s less exciting to be working on something at 2 a.m.”

“Be sick of the sight of" nghĩa là gì?

“Be sick of the sight of (someone or something) -> nghĩa là chán ngấy, buồn nôn hoặc rất ghét khi thấy ai/cái gì.

Ví dụ
Wanderers defenders will be sick of the sight of Vine in full-flight after her telling contribution in Sydney's double over their rivals this season. Vine ran rampant down her right flank in the first half and could have picked up a couple of assists had Remy Siemsen been more accurate with her finishing.

No, the UK will certainly not be missed. It will be bid good riddance (sự giải thoát, tống khứ), and rightly so, after nearly 50 years of throwing a spanner in the works (yếu tố cản trở công việc) of every major project. The culmination (cực điểm) has been the deviousness (xa xôi, quanh co, ranh ma) in which it carried out its negotiations (cuộc đàm phán) to leave. Every EU leader will be sick of the sight of the UK, and rightly so.

After smashing a Test best 159 not out against them at the SCG in January 2019, the Australians must be sick of the sight of him. Back home, though, they just can’t get enough of a played who was under fire for his underwhelming form in the 2020 Indian Premier League as recently as November. Some three months on, and after his stunning efforts Down Under, all is forgiven.

“Shall I be mother?” nghĩa là gì?

“Shall I be mother?” -> nghĩa là lời đề nghị muốn rót trà hoặc phục vụ đồ ăn vì theo truyền thống người mẹ chính là người phục vụ những thứ như vậy trong gia đình.

Ví dụ
If I don't have a hand, they always offer to help and say, 'hey, shall I be mother?' or whatever.”

"Shall I be mother?" The tenant (chủ nhà) sounded confused by the situation and asked, "Who are you? Who is this?".

Are you hungry? Can I cook for you? Shall I be mother? On an artsier show, the food might be a metaphor (ẩn dụ) for meeting each other's needs.

“Not be whistling Dixie” nghĩa là gì?

“Not be whistling Dixie” = không huýt Dixie (bài hát phổ biến của những người lính miền Nam trong cuộc Nội chiến Mỹ về việc tiếp tục hy vọng vào sự thành công của sự nghiệp đã sụp đổ) -> nghĩa (lóng) là có quan điểm thực tế và trung thực về điều gì, trái ngược với những người lạc quan thái quá.

Ví dụ
That Disney+ Marvel trailer that dropped on Super Bowl Sunday, though, gave us that first look — and hoo boy, Bettany is not whistling Dixie.

“In just about every speech they give examples of small businesses trying to do something and being blocked by government regulations,” said Lawrence Jacobs, a political scientist at the University of Minnesota. “The Republicans are not whistling Dixie here – they are sinking their teeth into very public angst (cảm giác lo lắng, tội lỗi) about government being too large.”

Bills were introduced, rushed through committee, then bounced to the floor for a vote day after day. Because we need to hurry is a poor excuse to bypass (bỏ qua, phớt lờ) a deliberative process, which is central to our democracy. Honest Abe wasn’t whistling “Dixie” at Gettysburg when he said, “A government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth.” While the ballot box is being questioned, Colorado lawmakers should make sure elected representative government can be trusted, as well.

“Not be all there” nghĩa là gì?

“Not be all there” -> nghĩa là thần kinh không ổn định, đần độn hoặc kém thông minh.

Ví dụ
People on the Internet may not be all there. I stopped seeing one man after he screamed about how much his genitalia (cơ quan sinh dục ngoài) hurt.

Shannan may not be all there, but she doesn't deserve this fate. As for Chris, he seems chill and nonchalant (hờ hững, không chú ý) as he is interviewed by the police and media.

If a cop orders sane people to do something, we do it. We know they’re armed and endowed with authority. We know we could pay a heavy price if we disobey. But we don’t know what goes through the minds of those whose minds may not be all there. In many such cases, disobedience should not be punished with death. Joe Biden may be the latest to suggest that we “lower the temperature,” seeking calm instead of agitation (tâm trạng bối rối, lo âu). It’s good advice in most circumstances, including confrontation (đương đầu) with the mentally ill.

Em còn bé lắm

Seloni Khetarpal, 36, of Jackson Township, was charged with disrupting (phá rối) public services (dịch vụ công), a fourth-degree felony (trọng tội).

...The first time she called, police warned her to only call for a legitimate emergency (tình huống khẩn cấp chính đáng). Hours later, she called again.

According to court documents, she was “belligerent” (tham chiến) and said she thought it was a legitimate issue.

"Pox doctor's clerk" nghĩa là gì?

"Pox doctor's clerk" -> nghĩa là ăn mặc lòe loẹt, bảnh chọe, quá lố.

Ví dụ
Admittedly, this Chancellor is a refreshing (tuwoi mwois) contrast (tương phản) to his morose (ủ rũ) predecessors Gordon Brown and, especially, Spread Fear Phil Hammond, who had all the charisma (đức tính) of a pox-doctor’s clerk.

Disconsolate (muộn phiền) and frankly over-stretched by the demands (yêu cầu) of his job, Boris has the countenance (thái độ) of a man who would much rather spend the next six months working as a pox doctor’s clerk than attend another Cobra meeting and then make up some more stupid policy on the hoof.

Some of our better insults, after everyone’s favourite – “as flash as a rat with a gold tooth” – include: “That bloke (gã, thằng) is so thick he wouldn’t notice if you were up him with an arm full of deck chairs.” I ask you, what business does he have to be “dressed up like a pox doctor's clerk”, and on that subject, can someone advise why pox doctor’s clerks were known to dress above their station?

Certainly you could overdo the lustre (vẻ vang) of your personal appearance – dad’s first comment when he saw me in the “interview suit” which most 17-year-olds of the late 1970s acquired for the purposes of university entry, was “What are you doing, all dressed up like a pox-doctor’s clerk?”

"Doctor Livingstone, I presume?" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Clay Banks on Unsplash

"Doctor Livingstone, I presume?"

Sir Henry Morton Stanley, a Welsh journalist (nhà báo) and explorer, best known for exploring the Congo Basin , went in search of Livingstone and eventually found him in 1871. When he first saw the Scottish missionary/explorer he is purported (có ý định) to have uttered (thốt ra) the memorable phrase, ‘Doctor Livingstone, I presume?’ However, it is highly unlikely that Stanley ever spoke these words .

The Queen arrived at your correspondent (người viết thuê), gave him a puzzled look, whereupon (và thế là) he humbly explained “I’m from The Times, Your Majesty”. The Queen, rather charmingly, gave him a winning smile and said something like: “Oh, well I don’t need to talk to you then.” Upon which Prince Philip arrived, gave a similar puzzled look to your correspondent, and then said “Doctor Livingstone I presume?”

In came this topper from Leonard Malkin of Troy, Mich., quoting William F. Buckley Jr. in one of his books on sailing: “What is the question to which ‘Doctor Livingstone I presume’ is the answer?” The question: “What is your full name, Dr. Presume?”
