"Have a near miss" nghĩa là gì?

"Have a near miss" -> nghĩa là suýt va chạm, đụng xe.

Ví dụ
Firefighters have a near miss as they drive through walls of flames.

It felt very much like a casual encounter. I thought it was like when you have a near miss and have to report a first aid accident. I didn’t take much care…

iwiRail chief executive Greg Miller said it had support services in place to help drivers, such as Campbell and Goldsworthy, when they have a near miss or death. He said the public needed to wake up and be alert - because KiwiRail cannot protect every kilometer of track around the country.

...The city police has filed an initial chargesheet against the individual, who has not yet been identified, and say they are investigating his motives for the act.

Pictures of the man, posing with the police in one and riding his motorcycle in the other, attracted a mixture of reactions on social media.

Several people pointed out the irony of police detaining a man for wearing a face covering when this is required under Covid-19 regulations.

A Twitter user “Meh” said: "People get scared of the dude and don't come out on new year during Covid times, everyone stays safe. Isn't this a good thing?”

"Lay down the marker" nghĩa là gì?

"Lay down the marker" có marker là bút đánh dấu -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đặt dấu ấn, tiêu chuẩn cho người sau noi theo.

Ví dụ
The club can lay down the marker today with a win against Lazio, an opposition which is bound to make Juventus huff and puff on the day.

Christmas blessings may need to come early for Mike Mutebi KCCA if they are to lay down the marker in the Caf Confederation Cup on Wednesday.

For both these sides, today's encounter could end up deciding the course either club's season takes in Bundesliga 2020-21. Despite being only the second gameweek of the new edition of the league, a win for either team today could see them lay down the marker for the rest of the season.

"Cock up" nghĩa là gì?

"Cock up" -> nghĩa (lóng) là sai lầm, thất bại nặng nề.

Ví dụ
We've contacted Valve to see if this was an accidental cock-up on their part, or whether somebody somehow managed to obtain unauthorised access to the listing. We'll update this story if we receive a response.

To date more than 664,000 vaccines have been administered in the North, which has seen infection rates fall to 64 cases per 100,000 people. Prof O’Neill said it was a “cock-up” that led to one of AstraZeneca’s European plants in the Netherlands not being cleared to produce the vaccine on the continent.

No smoking gun was found, and the general conclusion was that a cock-up - not a conspiracy - led to up to 30 mourners being allowed to attend the service in Roselawn Cemetery while eight other families were kept at the gate. Many questions still remain as to how this appalling situation came to pass. It's important to note that this was not a public inquiry with statutory powers of compulsion (sự ép buộc, cưỡng bách) over witnesses and documentation. The 116-page report categorically rejects claims that there was a republican "takeover" of Roselawn, and states that at all times council staff were present at the gate.

"Call in his marker" nghĩa là gì?

"Call in (one's) marker" có marker là ghi điểm, ghi sổ -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đòi nợ ai.

Ví dụ
What are we going to do if they call in their markers? We don't have the money to pay them back!

When the Bardems call in his marker and force him to track down a rogue food truck invading their turf, Rock has no choice left but to say yes.

It's an attempt to bring some semblance (vẻ bề ngoài) of honor to the proceedings. Even after Wick is made excommunicate (rút phép thông công), he's still able to call in his marker with The Director (Angelica Huston), who runs a Belarussian ballet and wrestling school, where Wick was apparently trained.

"No call for" nghĩa là gì?

"No call for/to" có call for là tín hiệu, lời kêu gọi -> cụm từ này nghĩa là không có lý do chính đáng cho điều gì, không yêu cầu làm việc gì.

Ví dụ
There is just no call for that type of language in the classroom!

McKee proposes $11.2-billion budget with no call for broad tax hikes (tăng đột xuất).

The proposed Plainfield police budget includes several funding shifts, but no call for new officers.

This time, the theme was all business. At least outwardly. No great dragon had been slain, and so there was no call for the elaborate ceremony.

"Damp squib" nghĩa là gì?

"Damp squib" = pháo ẩm -> nghĩa là điều gây thất vọng.

Ví dụ
“It seems like a damp squib to have just one game to finish the season - especially in a season when a lot of these games were characterised by understrength teams.

See off Ireland today and the bid for a first tournament title since 1999 is well and truly on. Lose and it all threatens to become a bit of a damp squib. Yes, they could still go and beat France away from home, but it wouldn’t be enough to see them finish top, which has been the overriding aim from the moment they managed to topple England.

A day after the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Friday filed a voluminous 11,400-page chargesheet along with over 50,000 pages in digital form before a special court in Mumbai in the drugs case related to late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, actor Rhea Chakraborty’s advocate responded calling the chargesheet “a damp squib standing on foundation of inadmissible (không thể chấp nhận) evidence”.

"Bugger all" -> nghĩa (lóng) là không có gì.

Ví dụ
I actually think they think I do bugger all, I don't think they realise I do 86 jobs.

“Losing a leg is bugger all now,” he said. “It's a completely different life than I expected to have, it's just way life now is.

In other words, people who know bugger all about what they're doing also have no clue that they know bugger all and are doing a cruddy job.

"Have a cadenza" nghĩa là gì?

"Have a cadenza" có cadenza là đoạn nhạc được độc tấu ở cuối một phần trong một bản côngxectô -> cụm từ này nghĩa là tức giận, kích động hay cáu kỉnh.

Ví dụ
Don't have a cadenza—I was only trying to be helpful!

Sam always has a cadenza over the traffic on his way to work.

"It’s both energetic and slow. The beginning is kind of slow, and then it gets faster and more energetic, and then it slows down again," she said. "It ends quite energetically, and then I have a cadenza, which is slower but still interesting and varying."

The Duster, with its practical hard plastics and not overly premium surfaces and finishes, is not trying to be some plush (vải lông) divan. Rather, it’s an SUV that can be driven and used: dogs, kids, gardening equipment… and no one’s going to have a cadenza if there are a few scratches (bệnh phồng da chân) and scuffs (chỗ trầy da) left behind.

"Fanny’s your aunt" nghĩa là gì?

"Fanny’s your aunt" -> nghĩa là nhấn mạnh về công việc được hoàn thành dễ dàng hoặc nhanh đến như thế nào.

Ví dụ

“I didn’t have one so all I could find in the junk trunk was this. “So I filled it with soap, screwed it in and bob’s your uncle & fanny’s your aunt. “You’ve got an in-built soap dispenser (bình xà phòng) in your sink! Why does this make me so happy?”

Of course, people being people, once they’ve got an expression to get their teeth into, they can’t even leave it there. Soon they started saying “Robert’s your mother’s brother” and “…and Fanny’s your aunt” as if the lid had been torn off a chest full of nonsensical (vô lý) pleasantries. The latter being a curious echo of another expression “my Aunt Fanny!” a statement of pure disbelief which works in much the same witheringly sarcastic way as “I DON’T think!” or “as if!”

“Our interest was piqued by each other, but at that point it was like, we're about to work together for a long time, hopefully, you know, if the show gets picked up. So, there were no feelings at that point,” Moyer told Men's Health. “We were in the same hotel. We were having dinner every night. I got back to London and Anna got back to New York and I just missed speaking to her every day, which is what we had been doing up into that point. Bob's your uncle, Fanny's your aunt, and… you have a marriage.” Of course, it wasn’t as easy or quick as all that. There was a fair amount of romance involved, including Skype calls that lasted two to three hours a night.

"All to pot" nghĩa là gì?

"All to pot" -> nghĩa (lóng) là hỏng bét, tiêu rồi.

Ví dụ
Christian Pulisic suffers a bruised behind as Instagram video goes all to pot.

This season it went all to pot. Chelsea's game-changing 'Project Manager' got the sort of cash injection that requires an instant return.

The door with a large "Beware The Dog" sign led to a home littered with beer cans, where there was drugs equipment, electrical supply and sockets were "all to pot," a jacket was used as a lampshade and there was a pungent smell of piles of uneaten food and dog mess from the pet Staffordshire terrier.

"Hit the frog and toad" nghĩa là gì?

"Hit the frog and toad" = (đi) đánh ếch/cóc đây -> nghĩa là chào tạm biệt (lên đường).

Ví dụ
30 mins later hit the frog and toad. At that point servos become carparks for fast food or supermarkets.

The entry levies are all paid up, the Community Transport bus is fuelled up and ready to hit the frog and toad, and the loyal supporters who have been working hard to fundraise for the team are keen to see their Warriors put Macksville on the map.

But rhyming slang – reputedly imported by Cockney migrants – seems to be fading in Australia too, despite its determined championing by exponents such as 3AW's Ross Stevenson. (He once outlined his technique of shaving in the shower this way: "To dad-and-dave in the Eiffel Tower? I just run my onkaparingas over my boat-race as I go.") Think about it. When is the last time you heard of someone going to the "rubbidy" for a beer? Or grabbing the car keys to "hit the frog and toad"?

"Gone walkabout" nghĩa là gì?

"Gone walkabout" -> nghĩa là đi lang thang trong rừng, du hành, đi phượt.

Ví dụ
This of course isn't the first time China has removed apps like this, or indeed had others do the work instead. But there has usually been a reason that's clear and easy to understand – even if those outside China don't agree with it. Until we find out why Tripadvisor has gone walkabout, we'll have to assume this was either a mistake, or the app was doing something it shouldn't have.

“He was good at going off camping on his own for a couple of days. “That’s why none of us really worried about it at first because we just thought he’s gone walkabout.” Mr Bond said not a day went by when he did not think of his friend, even sharing old stories with his 11-year-old son. “Goldie and I were actually driving at the time to go to Port Arthur [in 1996],” he said.

Playing Edouard up front on his own and leaving our three recognised strikers on the bench was brave, given it has never previously worked. Replacing Turnbull earlier than normal was brave. Replacing him with Rogic was very brave given the Australian has gone walkabout all season. Bringing a striker on with just over 5 minutes to go was brave but not unusual this season. Unfortunately none of these decisions worked and, therefore, words other than brave better describe them.

"Have a go, you mug" nghĩa là gì?

"Have a go, you mug" = cứ thử đi mà, ngốc ạ -> nghĩa là khích lệ ai chịu rủi ro.

Ví dụ
He's been talking about it with our Lee Cowan: "I'm gonna teach you a little Aussie: 'Have a go, you mug!'" Jackman laughed. "It's like, you.

Still, that finger kept beckoning to “have a go you mug.” By this time the crowd had got into it, baying for blood, mine.

The famous Aussie actor is a self-confessed cricket nut, as he told news.com.au in an interview last year: "I used to come to every day of every Test match ... all day long you're hearing people yell out: 'Have a go, have a go you mug' ... it's not just enough to win, it was more your attitude that people loved and I always say that is something great about Australia.'

"Fall into place" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Ryoji Iwata on Unsplash

"Fall into place" -> nghĩa là diễn ra tốt đẹp, không vướng mắc, gặp khó khăn.

Ví dụ
McIlroy hoping things will fall into place once he sorts out (giải quyết) his ‘miss’. Northern Ireland player one of a quartet of Irish players in the field for the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida.

They are the third youngest team in the league and they’re still trying to find their identity (tính đồng nhất) offensively. Lucky for them Jerami Grant has emerged as that player who will lead this youthful offense moving forward as things slowly fall into place.

“We do need to see her at VFLW level for multiple weeks, so it looks like it’s going to be difficult for everything to fall into place,” coach Paul Hood said. “But, it also means with the VFL at our disposal, we can time it in a manner (thái đọ) that best suits Nina to be the best AFLW player she can be in 2022.”

The early technological interventions (can thiệp) we undertook, laid the foundation for giant leaps we achieved for our business. All pieces had to fall into place at the right time, and our holistic approach towards our targeted growth avenues have yielded positive results. We are now excited about achieving the next set of targets and exceed our potential.

-----

For 10,000 yen (£70) - plus expenses for travels and meals - anyone can rent Shoji Morimoto, 37, from Tokyo in Japan, but he will not do anything except “eat, drink and give a simple response”.

...Although originally offering his services for free, Morimoto now charges to reduce the volume of requests and to discourage time-wasters, and says he sees three or four clients a day - and 3,000 since he first launched his services.

...He has been hired to have lunch, pose for photographs on Instagram, accompany someone filing for divorce (nộp đơn ly dị), catch butterflies in the park and to listen to health care workers struggling with their work.

One man hired him to describe a murder (giết người, sát nhân) he had committed (phạm phải), while another paid Morimoto to take him from the hospital to revisit the spot where he had attempted suicide (định tự tử).

"Left-handed compliment" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Izzie Renee on Unsplash

"Left-handed compliment" = lời khen tay trái -> nghĩa là khen đểu.

Ví dụ
His most immediate (ngay lập tức) impact would likely come at first base, where he could provide a left-handed compliment to starter Bobby Dalbec.

There's a comment here by Blue Phire P-H-I-R-E, says, "Over. Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) will have way more than $5 billion in BTC. Danny, no offense." It moved. "No offense, but you sound like [Warren] Buffet when you talk about Bitcoin." Wow, that is the best left-handed compliment I've gotten in a while. [laughs]

The NFL had gone five seasons since its last left-handed quarterback (tiền vệ) before the Miami Dolphins handed the keys to their offense to Tua Tagovailoa. The rookie from Alabama has been a successful game manager thus far – and that’s no left-handed compliment.

It's a left-handed compliment to say a movie starts on a high, as the implication (hàm ý) is that it doesn't finish that way. Sad to say that's the deal with "Wonder Woman 1984," available Christmas Day on HBO Max and in theaters.

"Tell your story walkin'" nghĩa là gì?

"Tell your story walkin'" -> nghĩa (lóng) là bảo ai nên vừa đi vừa kể cho tiện.

Ví dụ
But it’s your fault. You wanted consistency. And now you have it. And as bloody-minded a man as Archer will bloody well give it to you. This is what you wanted. Tell your story walkin’, buddy.

Wade Miley flings one past a batter and the batter doesn’t have a crack, and the umpire does one of those brilliant double-fisting moves to signify: you’re outta here. You know the one, like he’s violently double-pumping a motor-mower’s ripcord. Seeya! And tell your story walkin’, Bubba. It is gold. We’ve seen this stuff on the television before, each year we might tune in to the World Series, get to know Wade Boggs or Kirby Puckett. We've heard of Derek Jeter and Dave Nilsson, the Australian who comes to mind when you think Major League Baseball. But actually seeing the umpire do a Leslie Nielsen move from Naked Gun, actually seeing it live and sweaty at the SCG? It is very cool.

On Wednesday night, Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers was all but finished pitching baseball’s 21st perfect game when the first-base umpire (trọng tài, người phân xử), Jim Joyce, declared a runner safe. Replays would prove the umpire was wrong, and he admitted as much — “I just cost that kid a perfect game,” he said later — but the game was over by then. Lights out. Tell your story walkin’.

-----
Kids do the darnedest things. A teen in Halton Region region caused a flurry (xao động) of funny news pieces this week, after they dialled 911 for a not-so-necessary reason. Apparently, their mother committed the heinous (cực kỳ tàn ác) crime of changing their Xbox console password.

Cue the oohs and ahhs, people. How dare she??

Listen, obviously (rõ ràng là) screen time (thời gian sử dụng màn hình) has taken on a whole new meaning during this pandemic (đại dịch). But to go as far as calling emergency services at the loss of your video games might just be a touch overboard. Just a touch.

...Although this is a pretty funny story, we should note that unnecessarily calling 911 can result in some not-so-funny consequences. Apparently, you can be fined up to $5,000 for taking up police time and resources.

cựu bộ trưởng giáo dục Slovakia đổ một đống phân trước cổng Văn phòng Chính phủ để phản đối thủ tướng đương nhiệm... :D
-----
Former Slovak minister of education (bộ trưởng giáo dục), Juraj Drexler, reportedly expressed his discontent (bày tỏ sự bất bình) with the current Prime Minister in an unusual way (cách lạ thường). “He’s dumping manure (đổ phân) on us every day, so today, I gave it back,” he said.

The police in Slovakia’s capital Bratislava were investigating a rather unusual case. On Wednesday night, they found a pile of manure dumped right at the entrance to the Government Office.

The search for the person responsible for this malodorous (nặng mùi, hôi hám) act didn’t take too long as he soon unveiled (tiết lộ) himself on Facebook. The manure was brought there by former minister of education, Jural Draxler.
