"Green around the gills" nghĩa là gì?

"Anh em mình là cái gì nào?!! Photo by Kats Weil on Unsplash"
"Green around the gills" = mang tai xanh lè, tương tự xanh như tàu lá chuối.

Many exclaimed (thốt lên) “That was amazing,” and “That was unbelievable.” Several of the guests were speechless (cạn lời) after the flight, and a few were a little green around the gills.

Today she is whipping up (đánh, quấy) a drink that will leave us green around the gills while giving us a heck of a hangover (nôn nao). All for just $93 trillion. Cheap! As Mad Magazine used to say.

Dinesh D’Souza as arbiter (thẩm phán, trọng tài) of masculinity makes me green around the gills to begin with. One must assume that his court-ordered psychiatry (án lệnh tâm thần học) didn’t do him much good back in the day.

I didn't notice the lean (độ nghiêng) as I tucked the GLS into a corner, but I did feel a marked difference in how stable the SUV felt and how I felt less tossed to-and-fro (lật qua lật lại), in the driver's seat. My often carsick co-pilot also looked noticeably less green around the gills over the twisty (ngoằn ngoèo) mountainous roads.

She said the unsanitary (mất vệ sinh) experienced "destroyed everything" — including her wedding dress, floors, walls and the entire bathroom, and told The Boston Globe it will cost $8,000 to rid her home of the sewage.

Melrose Mayor Gail Infurna blamed the backup (dự phòng) on a main sewer (đường cống) line that was blocked, and said Department of Public Works employees "responded immediately" after receiving a call to the area about a "potential water issue." The sewer blockage has been repaired, and "the ensuing damage remains under investigation (điều tra)."

"Strut your stuff" nghĩa là gì?

"Strut one's stuff" có từ "strut" nghĩa là đi khệnh khạng, vênh váo. Cụm từ này thường dùng để biểu đạt ai đó vô cùng tự tin thể hiện khả năng bản thân, đặc biệt là nhảy hoặc biểu diễn.

Ví dụ
The annual July 4th Visionary Pets on Parade is held each year in loving memory of animal lover Ellis Rosen. Dress your pet and strut your stuff!

Are you among the nominees (ứng viên) for the Tahlequah Daily Press' annual "Best of Cherokee County" contest? Then it's time to strut your stuff! The "nominee tab" appeared in the Sunday, June 23 edition, along with a ballot (lá phiếu) for choosing the winners.

More than 130 breeds of dogs (giống chó) will trot (chạy nước kiệu), sit and generally strut their stuff at the Norris-Penrose Event Center during the Colorado Springs Kennel Club All Breed Dog Show from Thursday through Sunday, and the public is invited, though you must leave your dogs at home.

The video of the Ndlovu Youth Choir (dàn hợp xướng), accompanied by Grammy-winning South African flautist (người thổi sáo) Wouter Kellerman, was shared far and wide and today, as the singers strut their stuff at the Ndlovu Miracle Theatre in Elandsdoorn in Limpopo, it’s clear why it was such a hit.

"Sweat the small stuff" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Caroline Hernandez on Unsplash
"Sweat the small stuff" có từ "sweat" chỉ tình trạng rất lo lắng. Nếu ai đó nói với bạn "don't sweat the small stuff" có nghĩa là bạn đừng nên lo lắng/ cáu gắt vì những chuyện nhỏ nhặt.

Ví dụ
When I asked her what she has learned in her first five decades of life, she said that she’s still learning not to sweat the small stuff and to do more observing before doing snap talking.

Perhaps the most important thing when flying with children is not to sweat the small stuff. Getting on a plane is rarely anyone’s favourite part of a holiday, so simply tolerating the bored fidgeting (khó chịu) from young kids and low-level hostility (chống đối) from teenagers is perhaps the best way to get through it.

When I’m stressed, anxiety, anxious that’s when the skin flares up (tồi tệ hơn) but i’ve kind of learned to control that and not sweat the small stuff that happens. Because you know the older you get, I’m 31 now, and in the last couple of years a close friend of mine passed away and it is kind of like what’s the point in worrying about silly stuff. Life is too short to be stressing about nothing.

This idea of starting with small things and taking small steps if you want to achieve big and radical (đáng kể) results is called the Kaizen method and has been implemented (áp dụng) with great success in particularly the Japanese business sector for decades. Like the "broken window theory", the basic principal underpinning (nền móng) the Kaizen method is if you want big change, you need to "sweat the small stuff".

"At the drop of a hat" nghĩa là gì?

"At the drop of a hat" = (trong một thoáng) chiếc mũ rơi -> thời gian ngắn.

I want to be at school at the drop of the hat because it’s too late.

“I’ve never seen anybody work so hard, who had so much talent and play so violent and play with such tenacity (kiên cường),” he said. “This guy would fight you on the field at the drop of a hat, and I respect that about him, and outworks everybody. I would be the last person in the film room usually at the end of camp, and I would go in there and watch tape once everybody was at home. I started going in there an opening the door and turning the lights on to find my pen or notebook, and he was in there every night.”

“There was a scene that was cut from the film where Peter Parker went and sold all his toys to get the money in order to buy MJ a present,” Holland tells Uproxx. “And one of the toys, it was Kevin Feige, he said, ‘I need this toy to be in there.’ I forget what it’s called, but it’s a really niche (thích hợp) Star Wars character and then I end up not selling that toy.” It’s heartening (phấn khích) to know that even the boss man, Kevin Feige, doesn’t get to always pull in-jokes at the drop of a hat.

During Wednesday’s interview, Trump also hinted (ám chỉ, ngụ ý, nói bóng gió) he might impose (áp đặt) tariffs (thuế quan) on Vietnam, describing the country as “the single worst abuser of everybody”.

“A lot of companies are moving to Vietnam, but Vietnam takes advantage (tận dụng tình thế, lợi dụng) of us even worse than China. So there’s a very interesting situation (tình huống thú vị) going on there,” Trump said.

Trump said that that the China trade tariffs were only hurting China, while the US was benefiting from the situation.

"Actions speak louder than words" nghĩa là gì?

"Actions speak louder than words" = hành động có ý nghĩa hơn lời nói. Cụm từ này rất thường được dùng trong các tình huống giao tiếp công việc, và còn một cách diễn đạt là "Nói dễ hơn làm".

Ví dụ
Of course the government have made all sorts of promises but as we all know, actions speak louder than words.

Amber is particularly angry when Danny and Arabella share a kiss in full view of the other islanders, saying: “I just think people can talk all they like but actions speak louder than words and I think that Arabella and Danny are conducting themselves in such a bad way that I just feel like ‘what do I have in common with you?’

The council’s stance (lập trường) on the entire issue was confusing, and actions speak louder than words. Although the measure was voted down, there never seemed to be a clear reason to as why the council voted against it other than they just didn’t want the fund to be depleted. From an outsider’s perspective, it seems as if they just want to hold on to the money and wait for something else to come along. However, there hasn’t been any recent mention of other projects coming down the pipe.

What some see as anti-foreign sentiment (tinh thần bài ngoại) is probably (có lẽ là) a linguistic misunderstanding (hiểu nhầm ngôn ngữ)

African swine fever (dịch tả lợn châu phi) has devastated (tàn phá, hoành hành) China’s pigs. The country’s herd (bầy, đàn) has shrunk (giảm, teo) by 20%, or roughly 100m, over the past year. The epidemic (dịch bệnh) is now threatening to claim another victim: the standing in China of ubs, a Swiss bank.

Its troubles stem from a quip about the inflationary impact of the porcine (như lợn, giống lợn) pandemic (dịch lớn, bệnh xảy ra khắp nơi), which has pushed up consumer prices (làm tăng giá tiêu dùng). “Does this matter? It matters if you are a Chinese pig. It matters if you like eating pork in China,” Paul Donovan, global chief economist of ubs’s wealth-management arm, wrote in a note to clients. To some in China, the phrase “Chinese pig” looked insulting (lăng mạ, sỉ nhục), even racist (phân biệt chủng tộc).

"You reap what you sow" nghĩa là gì?

"You reap what you sow" = Bạn sẽ thu được những gì bạn bạn gây ra. Câu này dùng để nhắc nhở mọi thứ đến với bạn đều từ những gì bạn đã làm, không phải do ngẫu nhiên. Nói theo văn học là "Gieo nhân nào, gặt quả đó".

Ví dụ
You reap what you sow... Farmers for Trump are going to learn that the hard way with the Chinese tariffs (trừng phạt thuế) on agriculture products.

In the case of Iran, two terrorist attacks that recently rocked (rung chuyển) the Iranian capital of Tehran just illustrated the truth behind the well-worn adage (ngạn ngữ), “You reap what you sow.” Karma, meet the extremist mullahs of Tehran.

“It was the fairness of the Protestant work ethic and the Hindu law of karma: People should reap what they sow. People who work hard should get to keep the fruits of their labor. This made me realize that I had done a poor job of capturing conservative notions of fairness, which focused on proportionality, not equality.”

Xe đẹp đó chú! Photo courtesy: nyexoticcars

"Great minds think alike" = Những người thông minh thường nghĩ giống nhau.

A: This summer I've decided to take scuba diving lessons.
B: Really? Me too. I have already paid for the course.
A: Great minds think alike.

There may also be a fun element of “great minds think alike.” Commenter Paul Firth wrote that he and his wife were expecting around the same time as his brother and his wife. Firth had a daughter, and six months later his brother welcomed a son.

Yes, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s also true that birds of a feather flock together, we’re all in the same boat, and great minds think alike. The CEOs who understand this best will have the greatest chance to create and develop high performing teams.

Đúng quá phải không mấy đứa! Photo courtesy: Shelby Casanova

"What goes around comes around", câu này có nghĩa là nếu bạn đối xử tốt với ai đó thì họ sẽ đối tốt với bạn và tương tự, nếu bạn đối xử tệ với họ thì họ cũng sẽ làm thế. Cụm từ tương đương là "Ác giả ác báo" và thường được dùng với ý nghĩa tiêu cực.

Ví dụ
He did nasty things to other people, and what goes around comes around. Nobody cares that they tried to kill him.

What goes around, goes around, goes around
Comes all the way back around, yeah
Let me paint this picture for you, baby
You spend your nights alone And he never comes home
And every time you call him All you get is a busy tone
(Bài hát What goes around... comes around của Justin Timberlake)

Professor Osinbajo was born in Creek Hospital, Lagos. The vice president’s mother, Madam Olubisi Osinbajo’s parents are both from Ejigbo in Osun State and Ilaro in Ogun State. The speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Adefemi Akeem Gbajabiamila was born in Surulere, Lagos. Dr. Ekwueme, Chief Ezeoke, Professor Osinbajo and Femi Gbajabiamila are lawyers. Incidentally, Professor Osinbajo and Gbajabiamila are old boys of Igbobi College, Lagos. As they say, what goes around, comes around. Personal interest, not regional or religious interest, is the first priority of every politician.

A group of runners experienced a stunning (tuyệt đẹp) sight last weekend as a bear temporarily halted (dừng lại) the Leadville Trail Marathon in Colorado Springs

The bear appeared for only about 15-20 seconds, as it bolted (chặn) across the road, slipped (đi qua) through a gap (khoảng trống) in the runners and vanished (biến mất) into the woods.

“Everyone froze,” Peterson said. “We let the bear do what it was going to do, and it found a gap in the runners to cross and then took off into the brush (bụi cây). Everyone just looked at each other like, ‘Did that really just happen?’ It was so casual. That was what was funny about it. In trail races, we see wildlife (đời sống hoang dã) all the time, but you never expect a bear to jump out in front of you when you’re in a mountain race.”

A horrific recent murder of a young child is the reason this bishop wants to exorcise his city with holy water

...researchers found that coffee can stimulate (kích thích) what's known as brown fat (chất béo nâu). "Brown fat is a unique organ (bộ phận) that is used for producing heat. It's present in quite small amounts in the body,".

Brown fat cells (tế bào) are the body's internal fat fighters (loại bỏ chất béo). When the body produces heat, it uses energy (năng lượng), thus burning calories (đốt cháy ca-lo). This is the first study that shows a cup of coffee can impact how brown fat functions.

Adults have between 50 and 100 grams of brown fat in their bodies (cơ thể), and when it is activated, it has the unique ability to produce 300 times more heat than any other organ in the body.
