"Have a good night" nghĩa là gì?

Tối qua ngủ muộn à? Photo by Annie Spratt

"Have a good night" = Có một buổi tối ngon lành -> Ngủ ngon/ngủ say giấc và cũng là một cách để chúc ai đó ngủ ngon.

Ví dụ
"Some people may support me," Joshua said. "Some may support Andy. At the end of the day, we will have a good night of boxing.

Since Summer is winding down I didn't care about my beach body anymore, hence the pizza. You laughed and told me to have a good night.

It can help you have a good night's sleep. Eating early dinners helps your body come in sync with circadian rhythm (nhịp điệu sinh học ngày đêm), helping you sleep better.

Just like you need a good night's sleep to have an amazing day, similarly, you need to change your daytime habits (thói quen ban ngày) to have a good night's sleep.

"Fly-by-night" nghĩa là gì?

Xem bay được bao lâu. Photo by Danny Postma

"Fly-by-night" = Bay lúc đêm khuya -> Người vô trách nhiệm, không đáng tin cậy và lén trốn đi một cách bí mật vào lúc đêm.

Ví dụ
The threat and rise of artificial intelligence (trí tuệ nhân tạo). Commoditization (thương mại hóa) due to vendor management systems. Increase of fly-by-night recruitment firms charging ridiculously low fees and lack of adherence (sự gắn bó, trung thành) to code of ethics (đạo đức).

Use caution when hiring a home improvement contractor (người đấu thầu). Scams (mưu đồ bất lương) abound, especially following a major storm, flood, or other weather event when many homeowners are trying to repair their houses. But contractor scams can happen any time, so be wary (cảnh giác) of high-pressure sales tactics (chiến thuật), up front fees, and fly-by-night businesses. Con artists will take homeowners’ money and deliver slipshod (cẩu thả) work… or no work at all.

“And our position all along has been one of understanding the decision made in 2016 but also doing our very best as a party, as a movement, to protect jobs and give us the opportunity to invest in areas, many of whom voted leave, who had seen no investment for 20 or 30 years and seen the loss of good quality, secure jobs (công việc ổn định, đảm bảo) in manufacturing replaced by fly-by-night economics, zero hours contracts and insecurity at the same time as the local authority expenditure (kinh phí) has been slashed and all the social infrastructure (cơ sở hạ tầng) that makes up our communities destroyed in the process, leaving that sense of hopelessness.

"Fuss about nothing" nghĩa là gì?

"Trade marketing" là cầu nối giữa người tiêu dùng và điểm bán hàng. Photo by Gary Butterfield on Unsplash

"Fuss about/ over nothing" = om xòm, rối rít không vì điều gì -> căng thẳng, lo lắng, thất vọng hoặc tức giận một cách thái quá vào điều không cần thiết.

Ví dụ
“Whenever you point this out, people will inevitably (chắc chắn) roll their eyes and say it’s ‘PC culture gone mad,’ or we are making a fuss over nothing,” she told HuffPost.

I don’t know what it says about us as club players but it appears we just can’t be bothered. Given that we don’t even look at a putt (cú đánh nhẹ trong golf) from anywhere but straight down the line, though, is that a surprise? Verdict (nhận định): A lot of fuss about nothing.

Of course it’s understandable that the marketing trade press (truyền thông marketing tại điểm bán) and the advertising industry (ngành quảng cáo) were so interested to learn about Amazon’s imminent deployment (sắp triển khai) of Blockchain experts in their FinTech ad team. But in the end it turns out to have been a fuss about nothing – or at least very little.

"Bank Night" nghĩa là gì?

Thử vận may đêm nay sẽ như thế nào? Photo by Francesco Ungaro

"Bank Night" = Đêm ngân hàng -> Từ cổ về một sự kiện chơi xổ số phổ biến ở Mỹ thời kỳ Đại Khủng hoảng khi một khán giả trong rạp chiếu phim được gọi tên thì họ được nhận giải thưởng tiền mặt.

Ví dụ
She said, movie-goers (người đi xem phim) dressed up for the theater, where they could get dinnerware (bộ đồ ăn) and stained glass for free, or win money on Bank Night.

During the Great Depression, theater managers increasingly turned to attention-grabbing promotional events to boost ticket sales. “Bank Night” at the Irvin, to cite one example, involved randomly drawing the name of one area resident. If that person was lucky enough to have bought a 35-cent movie ticket that same night, they would win the cash jackpot, which was seeded with $25 and increased $5 for each night without a winner. Because you only needed to buy a ticket, by the time the jackpot reached $100 there would be hundreds of ticket buyers loitering outside, uninterested in the movie and only waiting around long enough to hear word of the name drawn on stage.

"Saturday night special" nghĩa là gì?

Đứng im! Photo by Max Kleinen

"Saturday night special" = Đêm thứ bảy đặc biệt -> Súng ngắn nhỏ, rẻ tiền và dễ sử dụng/che dấu.

Ví dụ
Koretz is no stranger to anti-gun laws (luật cấm sử dụng súng), he successfully won a lawsuit (việc tố tụng) against pro-gun groups (nhóm ủng hộ dùng súng) over banning the so-called Saturday night special ...

Ronald Reagan had been shot and almost killed the year before by a schizophrenic (bệnh tâm thần phân liệt) with a Saturday night special, and it seemed like we had to ...

There’s evidence that’s enough to believe something you read on the internet, and then there’s evidence that will cause you to pay $182,000 for a century-old Saturday-night special, and for someone, this stuff evidently fell in the latter category. (hạng, loại)

"Night of the long knives" nghĩa là gì?

Như một con dao sắc nhọn đâm xuyên tim. Photo by Jimmy Chang

"Night of the long knives" = Đêm của những con dao sắc nhọn -> Một loạt những hành động nhẫn tâm và phụ bạc đối với ai đó.

Ví dụ
In our mists (màn che, che mờ mắt) and not those they berate (mắng mỏ) as they do like Hitler's Brown Shirts did in 1920 till June 1934, before the night of the long knives.

He faced a growing backlash (phản ứng dữ dội) over his “night of the long knives” decision to expel (tống ra, trục xuất) 21 rebel (người dấy loạn) Tories who backed the bill being brought forward – including heavyweights Ken Clarke, Philip Hammond and Rory Stewart.

Batters’s handling of Brexit reflects her leadership style and strengths. She is careful to bring people with her, and one sign of the fruitfulness (sự có lợi, có kết quả) of her approach was the working relationship she had with Michael Gove, secretary of state for the environment until Boris Johnson’s night of the long knives. “I never thought I would enjoy working with Michael Gove. His reputation (danh tiếng) in education was dire (kinh khủng, khốc liệt) – you speak to any teacher and they were damning about him.”

"Out of this world" nghĩa là gì?

Bay vào không gian. Photo courtesy: Parth Jagani

"Out of this world" = bên ngoài thế giới này -> tuyệt vời, không còn lời để diễn tả.

Ví dụ
The show was really good. The music was great and the costumes were out of this world.

If this sounds out of this world, you can still book nights through Tera's Indiegogo campaign. Starting at $175 a night, they're selling out fast—much faster than we'll actually get humans to Mars.

On offense (tấn công), they were good, but not out-of-this-world good. The Cubs ranked ninth in OPS during that stretch of games, but one offensive statistic may have some meaning: They led the majors in opposite-field hitting. You can bake that into what their manager believes will be the difference down the stretch.

"On and off" = tắt rồi mở -> thỉnh thoảng, không liên tục.

Ví dụ
They phone each other off and on.

Sarah was suffering from headaches on and off for two months before she suddenly blacked out (bất tỉnh) while driving in January this year. She was rushed to hospital with non-serious injuries but despite her pleas (lời cầu xin), doctors weren’t able to explain her loss of consciousness (mất nhận thức) or constant headaches.

I've always been very interested in certain themes and they've recurred (tái diễn) on and off through my work- racism, prejudices (định kiến) of all kinds and the victims of those prejudices. In this year with Youth Without God and my other play A German Life, I have sort of narrowed down to a particular historical moment – that very dangerous point between somebody idiotic and dreadful (tồi tệ) being elected, and the consequences of that election.

"Night after night" = Đêm này sau đêm khác -> Các đêm lặp lại liên tục trong một khoảng thời gian dài và không xác định được.

Ví dụ
The singer kicked off her fourth concert (buổi hòa nhạc) tour this past May and has been performing in front of sold-out (bán hết vé) crowds night after night ever since.

Lam, however, stopped short of announcing a fully independent investigation into the upheaval (sự chấn động, biến động) including the police's response and use of force, a key issue playing out night after night on city streets.

"Our farmers are constantly having their crops (vụ mùa) sabotaged (bị phá hoại), property's vandalised (bị phá hoại có chủ ý) and broken into, family's terrified, and animals stolen or killed, by these militant (chiến đấu) vegan warriors, across our country, night after night, and they are getting away with it, we have seen $2 fines (tiền phạt) and slaps on the wrists by our court systems for too long.

"Get off somebody's back" = xuống khỏi lưng ai đó -> để họ yên, không làm phiền hay chỉ trích họ.

Ví dụ
Maybe the only way to get him off my back is to tell him the truth.

Designer gene in my blood, so I’m just really good at it, but it wasn’t my passion, so I studied it just so the parents could get off my back, cause it was something I could study. They didn’t get what PR was.

“This is why Harry is so protective of his wife, so she does not go through what his mother went through. Get off her back and leave them alone,” another user wrote. “Oh, here we go again! This witch hunt (sự lùng tìm và diệt những người nghi là phù thủy; (nghĩa bóng) cuộc điều tra để khủng bố những người không theo chính phái, cuộc điều tra để khủng bố những người có quan điểm không phổ biến) is as bad as what happened to Diana. "Above the fray" nghĩa là gì?

Đông phết! Photo courtesy: cay enns

"Above the fray" = phía trên cuộc cãi lộn -> không liên quan đến những cuộc ẩu đả, tranh luận.

Ví dụ
His political aides (phụ tá) handled the controversy (cuộc tranh cãi) while he remained above the fray.

While the QB has remained a target of much unwarranted (không có cơ sở) criticism, he has managed to stay above the fray with each shot. Ehlinger was asked about Chaisson’s remarks (bình luận) — a player he has a prior relationship with from their time as recruits and when they faced each other in the 2015 Texas High School Football State Championship — and once again, the Texas quarterback took the high road.

His absence from the late-night arena is a bit odd, since his rivals, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and, among others, Cory Booker and Kamala Harris, seem to be ubiquitous (có mặt khắp nơi) figures there, chatting away with Colbert, Seth Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel. But Biden has his own strategy, which is largely about being above the fray. Now with summer over, the actual fray starts getting serious and Biden is getting serious, too.

"Ring the changes" nghĩa là gì?

In his new role Thomas is expected to ring the changes in the commercial department. A FIFA statement attributes Thomas with “very strong leadership credentials (phẩm chất) and a track record of implementing organisational change.”

County are struggling under the stewardship (cương vị quản lý) of Philip Cocu thus far and he could well ring the changes next week in a bid to turn things around and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dowell as one of the players to miss out.

To ring the changes, Old Trafford held the first Test of the 1993 series but the result was the same. A 179-run win for Australia was dominated (chiếm ưu thế, thống trị) by Warne’s ball of the century, bowled from what was then the Stretford End – now, aptly enough, the home of the party stand

People sometimes like to hear a singer without all the noise in the background. It’s nice to do something that is a quieter, more intimate (thân mật) mood. It’s nice of course to ring the changes and do different things. That’s part of the fun of recording really, to try and do albums that are different from each other. So it had a good reception (tiếp nhận), especially in Europe. They like that kind of thing.”

"Three-ring circus" nghĩa là gì?

Anh là chú hề mà, đừng sợ Photo by Pixabay on Pexels

'Three-ring circus' = ba góc biểu diễn xiếc, từ này bắt nguồn từ gánh xiếc khi cả ba góc sân khấu đều được biểu diễn cùng lúc (khán giả sẽ khó tập trung xem hết) -> tình thế khó khăn, thường là do có nhiều việc xảy ra cùng lúc

Ví dụ
Pluto says the team under first-year head coach Freddie Kitchens is handling the off-the-field drama much differently. "This is just a minor sideshow. Before it would have been a three-ring circus," Pluto said.

The Atlantic has become a three-ring circus of tropical (nhiệt đới) activity with Dorian in the center ring and other areas brewing (tích tụ mây đen) to the right over the central and eastern part of the main ocean.

Mattis has a deep respect for the office of the president even if he has little good to say about its current occupant. He recently told an interviewer from The Atlantic that he found Trump to be a man with "limited cognitive (liên quan đến nhận thức) ability" and that he displayed "dubious (không rõ ràng, minh bạch) behavior." (Literal translation: dumb and dishonest.) To anyone familiar with the three-ring circus going on in Washington for the past few years, the assessment comes as no surprise.

Do we really need three-ring circus “debates” to figure out that the only two candidates in the running for president who should be taken seriously are Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren? Perhaps with Joe Biden still leading the pack; the sooner he is put back out to pasture, the better. Perhaps with Kamala Harris running for president instead of an office that suits her better — like Commander of the Secret Police. Perhaps to give national exposure to persons who might make decent running mates or be useful in a Sanders or Warren administration.

"Ring out the old" nghĩa là gì?

Cam kết cho năm mới là ... Photo by from Pexels

'Ring out the old' = rung chuông tiễn năm cũ đi, cụm này thường đi kèm với cụm 'ring in the new' = rung chuông đón mừng năm mới -> tiễn biệt năm cũ chào đón năm mới; đánh dấu bước chuyển tiếp giữa hai giai đoạn, một giai đoạn kết thúc và một cái mới bắt đầu

Ví dụ
Ring out the old, ring in the new; Ring out the false, ring in the true. Have a great year ahead.

As 2018 has sped by, bibliophiles (người ham sách) will have an opportunity to ring out the old and ring in the new with major literary festivals, awards and, as always, several promising offerings slated (đề cử) to hit the stands in January 2019.

For more than a century, the New Year’s Eve ball has dropped in New York’s Times Square to ring out the old and ring in the new. And broadcasters like Anderson Cooper and Ryan Seacrest are there to take viewers through the occasion, a TV tradition started by the late Dick Clark, who emceed a New Year’s Eve special for 40 years.

It has been a most unusual year with very few predictions made at its start, holding true at its end. There were disasters aplenty (có nhiều thảm họa), both natural and those caused by humans. And with the latter still trying to cobble together a consensus on measures that will help tackle climate change in a meaningful way, we can only expect more of the former in the foreseeable future. As we ring out the old and ring in the new, we also have to keep in mind for whom the bell tolls (rung chuông), for it tolls for us.

'Ring in one's ears/head' = rung lên trong tai/ đầu ai đó -> hiện diện sống động trong tâm trí của ai đó khiến họ cảm tưởng như đang nghe thấy nó ở ngay bên cạnh; văng vẳng bên tai

Ví dụ
Intence is an exciting new artiste (nghệ sĩ), to say the least, and he is showing consistency in his releases. He has arguably (có thể cho rằng) the hottest song out right now and ‘isn’t satisfied. Testimony is guaranteed (đảm bảo) to ring in your ears for the next couple of months.

A naturally-aspirated V10, visible through the rear window (kính chiếu hậu), that is already a rarity and becoming rarer, its throaty (khàn khàn) rumble (tiếng động) will ring in your ears long after you’ve parked up. But so addictive is the habit of going up and down through the gears that parking will be way down your to-do list.

It is more than 170 years since the last shots rang out in the country of the Gunditjmara but the land is not silent. The voices of those who lost their lives in defence of their country ring in your ears when you stand amongst the lava flow of south west country of Victoria. Unlike other theatres of war such as Anzac Cove and the Somme, where peace was declared (công khai), and relationships restored with the Turks and Germans, no such peace was declared in the resistance wars (cuộc kháng chiến), no such restoration (phục hồi, khôi phục lại).

'Alarm bells start to ring' = chuông báo thức bắt đầu vang lên -> báo động các vấn đề và rắc rối tiềm ẩn sắp xảy ra nên cần phải tập trung chú ý

Ví dụ
When summer heat, which may harden the body balance of normally healthy people, combines with excessive moisture (độ ẩm), the alarm bells start to ring for patients with hypertension (tăng huyết áp).

Her husband Russell is there by her bedside when she wakes up, and explains what happened before taking her home for some R&R. He seems nice at first, but alarm bells start to ring when, in the trailer, he gleefully (hân hoan) tells Jennifer that the nearest neighbours to their haunted mansion-like house (căn nhà như biệt thự bị ám) are over a mile away. Gulp.

When you receive an email, verify (xác minh) who the email is from. It’s possible to fake any email address, but not all phishers are this clever, they may use a random email address that gives the game away. Check the link that you’re supposed to click by hovering your mouse (di chuột vòng quanh) over it to display a pop-up message with the real link in it. Look closely. Does the address make sense? If any alarm bells start to ring, don’t click.

Ví dụ
The medley (pha trộn) the Fort Dodge Senior High marching band will be playing and marching to this year should have a familiar ring for the older members in the audience. Some of the students playing it, maybe not so much.

Snap elections (bầu cử sớm) have a familiar ring in Kosovo, where not one government has lasted its full four-year mandate since the country declared independence from Serbia in 2008. 'Late in the day' = vào cuối ngày -> đã quá muộn để đưa ra thêm quyết định, hành động hay thay đổi dự án hay hành động nào đó vì nó đã được hoàn thành xong khá nhiều

Ví dụ
Her family had called around frantically (điên cuồng) on Monday, she said, only to learn late in the day that her sister was below deck when the fire broke out and did not survive.

Lawmakers in Britain's lower house of Parliament voted late in the day to approve (chấp thuận) legislation designed to prevent Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government from taking the country out of the European Union without a deal.

The agency informed the court that although it had formally arrested the accused, it was constrained (miễn cưỡng) to move the application for judicial custody as it was too late in the day and the ED required time to move the plea for custodial interrogation (chất vấn).

A number of pro-democracy lawmakers also hit out at Lam’s response as being too late to do any good. “There is no way that the people of Hong Kong are going to buy these fake goods which don’t quite pass muster, coming as late in the day as they do,” Democratic Party lawmaker Wu Chi-wai told RFA. “The pan-democratic camp (trại dân chủ) and the Democratic Party will continue to support the five demands (yêu sách) [of the anti-extradition movement],” Wu said.

'Too little, too late' = (cung cấp) quá ít và quá muộn -> hỗ trợ không đủ và tới quá muộn để có thể giải quyết tình huống, vấn đề

Ví dụ
Beijing's Hong Kong compromise (thỏa hiệp) is surely too little, too late. The incendiary (bạo động) extradition bill (dự luật) has been binned (bác bỏ) but protesters’ demands have grown

A joint local plan identifies areas suitable for development in the district, and once adopted can be used to determine whether planning applications which come forward are suitable. But critics have said it was “too little, too late”.

Carrie Lam’s proposal to withdraw (rút khỏi, rút lui) a contentious extradition bill that sparked weeks of outcry (la hét) in Hong Kong and Canada is “too little, too late.” That’s the take of Canadian activist Bill Chu, one of those who’s been working in Canada to support Hong Kong’s pro-democracy demonstrators.

Chancellor's £66million pay rise for Britain's nurseries 'too little too late'. In Wednesday's Spending Review, Sajid Javid also confirmed plans to increase teachers' starting salaries to £30,000. The Government has today vowed (hứa hẹn) to address the shortfall in early years childcare funding for the first time since launching 30 hours free childcare back in 2017.

"Keep late hours" nghĩa là gì?

Hình ảnh chung của các cú đêm Photo by Oleg Magni from Pexels

'Keep late hours' = tới thời điểm rất muộn -> thức rất khuya hoặc về nhà rất muộn

Ví dụ
Research from earlier this year found that night owls — people who naturally keep late hours — experience an effect similar to jet lag on a daily basis.

Many restaurant workers keep late hours, leaving work late at night, which could also increase the risk of getting pulled over and searched. That increases their exposure even if they’ve done nothing wrong, said the Rev. Romando James, a Clemson University emeritus professor of family and youth development.

The vast country of China has just one time zone, so Shanghai’s East Coast location means darkness comes early and most residents usually eat by nightfall (sẩm tối), with restaurants often closing their kitchens around 9 p.m. But for those who keep late hours, there are a few late night supper spots around town.

"If you do keep late hours, stick with foods that are easy-to-digest, healthy carbs but not excessive amounts of protein, fiber, or fat. Greek yogurt with some berries and nuts (almonds or walnuts) are a light and healthy snack. Fresh vegetables or a few slices of lean (thịt nạc) turkey are also a good choice," he said.

"Great and small" nghĩa là gì?

Tinh nguyện là một công việc ý nghĩa không phân biệt độ tuổi, giới tính Photo by from Pexels

'Great and small' = to lớn và bé nhỏ -> bao gồm nhiều người, nhiều thứ; tất cả mọi kích cỡ, kiểu loại, giàu nghèo, mạnh yếu

Ví dụ
Renkl, however, grew up in Alabama and now lives in Tennessee, so her catalog of all creatures great and small is, at once, more expansive (mở rộng, phát triển) and accepting, and includes chickadees, red-tailed hawks, rat snakes, rattle snakes and crawdads.

Rosie is making a chicken out of 212 biscuits; Phil is making a tortoise; Michael is making a Highland Cow; Alice is making a sheep; Priya and Michelle are both making dragons. All creatures great and small. Michael’s cow is “sort of cubist (họa sĩ lập thể)".

While nearly every aspect of each game is difficult in its own right, the best moments of these games come in the form of spectacular fights against foes (kẻ thù) both great and small. Mind you, a difficult opponent doesn't always make for a good boss battle.

So, to me, Pluto is a classical PLANET. End of story. We can easily choose to make Pluto the outer edge of the classical planet zone, in which case we’ll end up with 9 planets and an ever-increasing number of Kuiper Belt Objects great and small, as they are discovered. Anybody like my definition? It would have saved a lot of trouble 10 years ago !! Incidentally (nhân thể), the origins of the word planet are no help at all.

“Time is a great healer though and I've had time to look back on the highlights of my career, as well as things I could have done better and made different decisions.” Of those highlights, Walker found it hard to just pick one that stood out. “Being a young kid, I think maybe 90%, especially boys, dream of being a footballer,” he said.

Even last year, on second year of demonetisation (sự hủy bỏ), Singh had hit out at the government for the 'wounds' of currency ban move. "It is often said that time is a great healer. But unfortunately, in the case of demonetisation, the scars (vết sẹo) and wounds of demonetisation are only getting more visible with time," he had said in a statement.

Recently, in an interview with SpotboyE, Mrs. Tuli shared that time is a great healer and one should not take such decisions in haste (vội vàng). She said, "She did tell you that she won't even greet Vishal if and when she bumps into him ever, but I think nobody has seen the future. Aur, agar aap kisiko milo, toh baat-cheet ho jaati hai.
