"Beware of Greeks bearing gifts" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Kira auf der Heide on Unsplash

A mortgage arrears (tiền thế chấp) campaigner (người tham gia nhiều chiến dịch) warned “beware of Greeks bearing gifts” after vulture funds agreed to co-operate on troubled loans (khoản vay). The new deal means the State’s advisors in the Money Advice and Budgeting Service will be liaising (giữ liên lạc) on behalf of clients.

Dastyari’s problems bring to mind an ancient saying: “Beware of strangers bearing gifts”. The original quote by the Roman poet, Virgil, is politically incorrect these days – “Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes”, or paraphrased as “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts” – but it refers to the story of the Trojan horse. A gift of a giant wooden horse hid Greek warriors (binh lính) who at night opened the city gates and defeated Troy. This is a clear warning about accepting gifts.

The Latin phrase “Time Danasos et dona fermented” – which means “I fear the Greeks, even those bearing gifts” – has become the commonly used phrase “Beware of Greeks bearing gifts,” The phrase, from the Roman poet Virgil’s retelling of the Trojan War, refers to how the Greeks tricked the Trojans to win the war. It very aptly (thích hợp) applies to how the black community should view the Better Together proposal for merging the City of St Louis and St. Louis County.

"It smells like somebody/someone died in (some place)!"

One passer-by (khách qua đường) in Galston, Ayrshire, yesterday said the town is up in arms over (kịch liệt phản đối) the pong (mùi hôi). They said: “It smells like somebody died in there. People are raging (nổi khùng).”

Some locals said they'd never eat there again. "It smells like somebody died in there," said Michael Jordan, a clerk (người bán hàng) at Strauss Discount Auto store next door. "I wouldn't eat there if they totally sanitized (làm vệ sinh) it."

I can't tell you how many times I heard a patient or a patient's spouse (chồng/vợ) remark, "It smells like somebody died in there!" After a while I came to realize that GI problems, whatever they are, and bad odor (mùi) just seemed to go hand in hand.

"Life is like a box of chocolates" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Markus Spiske on Unsplash

"Life is like a box of chocolates" = cuộc đời giống như một hộp kẹo sô-cô-la -> cụm từ này nghĩa là cuộc đời không thể dự đoán trước được. Đây là câu nói nổi tiếng trong bộ phim Forrest Gump, “My mom always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.” có nghĩa là “Mẹ tôi luôn nói rằng cuộc đời giống như một hộp sô-cô-la, bạn không thể biết trước bạn sẽ rút được thanh nào”. Cũng dễ hiểu vì trong một hộp sô-cô-la có thể có nhiều vị/nhiều nhân khác nhau, mình không thể nào biết được mình sẽ chọn được vị gì cho đến khi ăn chúng.

Ví dụ
Forrest Gump once famously uttered (phát biểu) that life is like a box of chocolates because you never know what you’re going to get.

It’s like Forrest’s mamma never said, life is like a box of chocolates, but with this guy you pretty much know what you’re getting as soon as he steps up to plate.

What should we never forget? That life is like a box of chocolates… and it can expire (hết hạn). That is unless you freeze it, but nobody wants frozen chocolates. So why not eat it, share it and enjoy it before it expires?

“Forrest Gump” is the greatest movie ever made, full stop. Reference it whenever possible. Pepper (làm cho sống động) your social media posts with quotes like “Life is like a box of chocolates: you never know which ones the Russians are going to give you” and “Run, Hillary! Run!” Elizabeth Warren is just a warmed-over version of you. Remember, this is about authenticity (tính chất xác thực). Don’t make the voters settle for second best.

"Like a drowned rat" nghĩa là ướt như chuột lột.

Ví dụ
I look like a drowned rat and I can’t wait to get back to my dorm (ký túc xá) and take a warm shower.

Living in Cardiff, you can’t survive without a decent (tươm tất, tử tế) coat; it's cold, it's damp (ẩm ướt) and sometimes you have to rock up to lectures looking like a drowned rat.

Jamie started to cry. This then set Lily off as well. Great! Just what I needed as we walked into the playschool with two crying kids. Of course the place was packed and everyone turned to see what all the fuss was about. There was me trying to console (an ủi) the two of them, trying to manoeuvre (điều khiển) the buggy (xe đẩy trẻ con) through two doors with my face beaming red and looking like a drowned rat. Not a good look!

...It was hard to imagine then that, within a few months, this forbidding barrier would tumble down, the border shootings (bắn giết ở biên giới) would cease (ngừng/dừng lại), East Germans would be free to leave what for many had become an open prison (nhà tù lớn), and the cold war (chiến tranh lạnh), with its threat of nuclear Armageddon and all its other malign (độc ác, thâm hiểm, ác tính) ramifications (phân nhánh, chia nhánh), was finally coming to an end. “Ich bin ein Berliner,” (tôi là người berlin) John F Kennedy had famously declared (tuyên bố) in 1963. Now, suddenly, everyone was.

Phrases such as “turning point” (điểm ngoặt) and “historic watershed” (dòng thác lịch sử) are overused in contemporary discourse (bài thuyết trình; bài diễn thuyết; bài luận văn; bài diễn văn). But the fall of the wall, 30 years ago this weekend, was the supreme (tối cao, lớn nhất; quan trọng nhất; cao nhất) symbol (biểu tượng) of a truly hopeful global moment. It transformed Europe’s future prospects. It signalled an end to proxy wars (chiến tranh ủy nhiệm) from Luanda and Kabul to Managua and the Ogaden. It foreshadowed and hastened the Soviet Union’s collapse. It elevated the US as sole superpower, overseeing what George HW Bush portentously declared to be a “new world order” (trật tự thế giới mới). And it brought hope of peace...

"Cloak-and-dagger" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Sergiu Nista on Unsplash

"Cloak-and-dagger" = áo choàng và dao găm -> nghĩa là sử dụng hoặc dính líu vào bí mật, lừa bịp, hoặc các hoạt động gián điệp.

Ví dụ
NIGEL Farage has received a cloak-and-dagger approach (lối vào) for a seat in the House of Lords (Thượng viện), we can reveal (tiết lộ). The Brexit Party boss has been sounded out for a peerage by allies of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, a source said.

While the Opposition alleged (bị cáo buộc) that the government had a role in the snooping (chõ mũi), the latter brought up the “bugging” of then finance minister Pranab Mukherjee’s office during the UPA regime in 2011 — is only another version of this cloak-and-dagger drama that’s old hat for Indian politicians.

Cummings’ work in Russia was less cloak and dagger than Thornberry’s letter makes out. Upon graduation (tốt nghiệp) from Oxford - where he studied Russian history - Cummings worked to set up an airline connecting the Russian city of Samara with Vienna in Austria. The airline itself made only one flight and went bust in 1998, when Russia’s rouble (đồng rúp) collapsed (sụp đổ). Sounds like impressive work for a supposed Russian spy.

Sợ chưa! Photo courtesy: Tom K

"Heads will roll" = đầu sẽ rơi (và lăn long lóc) -> nói rằng ai đó sẽ bị trừng phạt rất nặng về việc họ đã gây ra, thường là đuổi việc.

Ví dụ
How could the air force have bombed a school by mistake? Heads will roll, believe me!

The South African government has not learnt from Eskom’s 2008 power supply crisis. As such, the country can forget about getting out of its current prolonged (kéo dài) low-growth trap. Red lights are flashing at Eskom, but whose heads will roll? Will there be consequences (hậu quả)?

Zaitsev’s wife says she believes high-ranking officers in regional branches of the Interior Ministry, Investigative Committee, and Federal Security Service are conspiring (âm mưu) against her husband. She says they’re also pressuring (gây sức ép) the local courts to rule against him. “I’m afraid that they’ll just hang him in jail and say it was suicide (tự sát),” Zaitseva told Meduza. “He told the truth, and now everyone in Khakassia is afraid that heads will roll.”

"Like a lost soul" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Arif Riyanto on Unsplash

"Like a lost soul" = giống như mất hồn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là trong bộ dạng buồn bã, cô đơn.

Ví dụ
Back in 2016, Hu started coming to Changpu River Park's match-making corner, like a lost soul. His wife had died just six days earlier.

Looking back, the pictures of Taylor’s despair losing that Rio fight reveal so much more, as the sport’s trailblazer looked like a lost soul, alone in the middle of the ring, the troubles of the previous 12 months pouring out, amidst the disappointment of defeat.

Warwickshire Junior Angling Committee member Jack Orton, who helps care for the nature reserve area (khu vực bảo tồn thiên nhiên), said he had already put netting in place to protect the eggs from wildlife such as badgers (con lửng) and dogs. He told the Observer (người quan sát): “Swans are always in pairs and its partner is now swimming around like a lost soul. It’s barbaric (dã man)."

"Like a scalded cat" nghĩa là gì?

Thôi chạy lẹ, mới nghe tiếng con gì hú ghê quá! Photo by Jakub Kriz on Unsplash

"Like a scalded cat" = giống mèo bị bỏng nước sôi -> cụm từ này nghĩa là với tốc độ cực kỳ nhanh, thường là do sợ hãi hoặc giật mình.

Ví dụ
Former Carter White House speechwriter (người viết bài diễn văn cho người khác) Chris Matthews runs like a scalded cat when asked, making sure all know he had nothing to do with the speech.

The GTS also accelerates (tăng tốc) like a scalded cat (despite weighing more than 5,000 pounds), but not in as wildly dramatic fashion as the Trofeo. It takes all of four seconds to 60, and can only reach 181 miles per hour.

But even if you don’t have that desire, or haven’t the £20K+ required, there’s no denying it’s a mouth-wateringly exotic lump of alloy (hợp kim) and carbon. It packs more performance credentials (thành tích) than most superbikes and goes, quite simply, like a scalded cat with an exocet missile up its jacksie. And that can only be a good thing, right?

"Like a well-oiled machine" = giống như máy hoạt động trơn tru -> cụm từ này chỉ một đơn vị hay một nhóm người/vật hoạt động, làm việc rất tốt với nhau. Nó có thể sử dụng ở nơi làm việc hoặc miêu tả về gia đình, .

Ví dụ
Your website is crucial (quyết định) to your business's success. But how do you know if it's pulling its weight? Whether you feel confident about the quality of your website or not, it can always get better, and Apprised is designed to make it work like a well-oiled machine.

The ensemble (nhóm người biểu diễn), scantily (chật) clad (mặc quần áo) in white Elizabethan-inspired costumes, worked like a well-oiled machine. They functioned as a group to narrate (kể lại) Orlando’s story and create dynamic tableaus (hoạt cảnh) with their bodies, almost as if they were a part of the set itself.

North End have operated like a well-oiled machine for much of the season but their engine room is under strain with midfielder (trung vệ) Ben Pearson suspended (bị treo giò) and his regular sidekick (bạn tri kỷ), Daniel Johnson, is an injury doubt after suffering a foot injury during last Sunday's 1-0 win at Charlton.

"Like for like" nghĩa là gì?

"Like for like" (LFL) là thước đo tăng trưởng doanh thu, được điều chỉnh cho các doanh nghiệp mới hoặc bị thoái vốn. Đây là một chỉ số được sử dụng rộng rãi về hiệu suất giao dịch hiện tại của các nhà bán lẻ. Ngoài ra, cụm từ này còn có nghĩa là cùng giá trị so với món đồ, món hàng đã bị mất hoặc hư hỏng.

Ví dụ
Michelin has posted like-for-like sales up 1.3% in the first nine months of 2019, in an environment which it says "deteriorated (giảm giá trị, hư hỏng) sharply" during the period.

Jewellery brand (nhãn hàng trang sức) Pandora has reported like-for-like improvements following its relaunch in the summer in Los Angeles, where it showcased its new company vision (tầm nhìn), “We give a voice to people’s loves – Passions, People and Places,” alongside an updated logo, monogram (chữ viết lồng nhau) and signature colour.

The chief executive (giám đốc điều hành), Steve Rowe, blamed the 5.5% decline in like-for-like clothing sales on buying errors that meant popular sizes sold out too quickly. A new design team was shedding its womenswear’s reputation for “frumpiness”, it said, but progress was undermined (bị suy yếu dần, giảm dần) by the 135-year-old company’s slow and complicated logistics, which meant it could not move products around the country fast enough.

"Like one of the family" nghĩa là như thể ai đó hoặc con vật nào đó được yêu thương, là thành viên thật sự của gia đình.

Ví dụ
Billy Jackson's cat Ollie means the world to him and is treated like one of the family. Last week he received a shock when Ollie came home and collapsed (ngã quỵ xuống) on the kitchen floor.

The evolution (sự tiến bộ, sự tiến triển)of people treating cats and dogs like one of the family has helped pet care evolve into a lucrative, multibillion-euro (hàng tỷ ơ rô) industry, opening up new opportunities for Irish entrepreneurs (nhà doanh nghiệp).

Wet days in BallyB were still quite enjoyable for children, who usually purchased water pistols (súng nước) and made sure that their guesthouse was properly saturated (đẫm nước). Mrs Houlihan was the name of our landlady (chủ nhà) and after a number of years you were treated like one of the family.
