"In a mad rush" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Katrine Bengtsson on Unsplash

"In a mad rush" -> nghĩa là hối hả, vội vã/sốt ruột.

Ví dụ
After the Duterte administration promised to fix excessive government red tape, telecommunications companies are now in a mad rush to fulfill their investment plans this year in a bid to make up for the delays (chậm trễ) caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

You are playing with lineups, you were rushed over the past month to get a system in play and you basically lost the summer. Everyone is in a mad rush. We just got the ruling (quyết định) to play earlier in the day. This was not easy and it is not easy for everyone playing. It’s almost like going from the seat of your pants the first few weeks.

A 30-year-old man in a mad rush to find O+ blood for his son during lockdown rammed (đâm vào) into a barricade on Friday.

"You're in the army now!" nghĩa là gì?

"You're in the army now!" nghĩa là chấn chỉnh đi, bạn đã vào quân đội, mọi thứ sẽ rất khác ngoài kia (ý chỉ cường độ và thái độ khi huấn luyện quân sự mà một tân bính sẽ phải đối mặt).

Ví dụ
It has been said that emotions are affected by the weather. It has also been said, “You're in the army now so you might as well be happy. Because nobody, I mean nobody, cares if you're not."

If I were a civilian (dân thường), he would love to take the suit because he knew he could get some money out of the railroad. But "you're in the Army now and you'll never get rich, you son-of-a-bitch, you're in the Army now."

You're in the Army now . Whether you decide to leave almost immediately or postpone it a while through the DEP, nothing surpasses the excitement of that first day when you leave for Basic Combat Training (BCT) .

Being Opie, and unable to resist the temptation (cám dỗ) to irritate (chọc tức) John a bit, he started marching in place and singing. "You're in the army now. You're not behind a plow. You'll never be rich, you son of a bitch. You're in the army now."

"You and whose army?" nghĩa là cách phản ứng kiểu trẻ con đối với đe dọa (một mình mày làm sao dọa được tao, về gọi "đội quân" đến đây).

Ví dụ
Satan said: “You and whose army is going to force me?” God said: “Me and my apostles (sứ đồ).”

"You and whose army's going to make me?"
"I don't need an army to kick your arse, Curry." I know whose arse would have got kicked that night if fate hadn't intervened.

“You and whose army?” In the schoolyard, that's what bigger guys used to say to smaller guys who dared to stand in their way. But in design and product development, the small guy can now answer: “I'll be right back with my own army."

“Mind your own stinking (hôi hám) business, Bear, or I'll have you back working curfew (giờ giới nghiêm) violations!”
“You and whose army, Fed?”
“I don't need an army, flatfoot!”

"You and who else" nghĩa là gì?

"You and who else?" hoặc "you and what army?" nghĩa là người theo phe của bạn đâu, người hỗ trợ của bạn đâu,.. tỏ ý thách thức, khinh thường trước sự đe dọa của đối phương.

Ví dụ
These kinds of comments terrify the deep state. Go on, try to steal the election. We dare you. It’s high time we Andrew Jackson this shit. Ask the media: “you and what army”.

“You might say I rescued the old fart (cổ hủ, lạc hậu) from the clutches (nanh vuốt) of the Overlord not far from here.”
Regaining my composure (bình tĩnh), I snapped in a cocky (vênh váo) tone, “Rescued? That's rich. You and who else?”

“You don't have to do this to impress me,” Tate muttered (lẩm bẩm) looking up at him.
“I'm covered.”
Frowning slightly (khẽ cau mày), “How?”
“You and what army is going to take us on?” One of the drunks asked as two more men stepped forward. Tate began to panic (hoảng loạn).

“You and what army?” Carson asked with a sly (ranh mãnh) smile.
I scoffed (chế giễu). “Me and what army? This army!” I gestured around me, only when I glanced around, no one was there. I spun toward the front door, expecting my allies (đồng minh) to back me up, expecting Sharon, Noah, Liana, and Christina to walk through the door and tell me everything would be alright. My eyes only met a solid wall. The door was gone.

"In the armpit of the universe" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Alessandro Oliverio from Pexels

"(Be/in) the armpit of the universe/world" = cái nách của vũ trụ -> nghĩa là ở nơi rất bẩn, hôi hám, không hấp dẫn.

Ví dụ
The Middle East will continue to be the armpit of the world until enough Middle Easterners realize that Islam is THE problem – not the solution.

She is just so missable. Josh, Oohh, now Josh, I could, mmmph, him one or two. He's off having a life, with a girl. Well, that's according to the Ouija board. But if he is, man! He's having a life while I'm in the armpit of the universe!

I was (and still am) an official Hub City Skeptic, but I admit I've been enjoying imagining the shock among people who normally only come here in the dead of winter upon learning that we don't actually live in the armpit of the universe.

It was the important things that were different. David's whole attitude changed because his identity was restored. He was God's Istan. From Adullam, David moved to En Gedi. If Adullam is the armpit of the world, En Gedi is the smile on her face.

"Up to your armpits in" nghĩa là gì?

Ngập đầu trong công việc. Photo by Visual Tag Mx from Pexels

"Up to (one's) armpits (in something)" = lên tận nách -> nghĩa là cực kỳ bận; can thiệp/tham gia sâu quá mức hoặc thấy choáng ngợp bởi khối lượng lớn của điều gì.

Ví dụ
Yep, and I'm trying to move house.... it's like trying to sort an entire house while up to my armpits in cosy, warm mud.

That has made my 'still up to my armpits working' evening so much better! Speak soon and hope you and yours are well.

The world has never been sicker, so if you are a healer, you can be up to your armpits in people who are conking out (phát bệnh) all over the place.

I teach that there are two things you NEVER delegate (giao phó) in a business. One is the marketing, the acquiring (thu hút), optimizing (tối ưu hóa), retaining (giữ chân), and multiplying (nhân rộng) of customers. That you want to be up to your armpits in, all the time. The other is control of the checkbook.

"Mad as a hatter" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Evelyn Cosplay on Unsplash

"Mad as a hatter" = điên như thợ làm mũ -> nghĩa là điên rồ hoặc tức giận.

Ví dụ
If we were closer to your office in Phoenix, you might have met her, up close and personal. She was mad as a hatter for a week and used your name in ways I did not think were possible.

Why fashionistas in the 1800s were ‘mad as a hatter’. Wray historian David Kenyon has written a book ‘Wray and District Remembered, a photographic history of the life and times of a working village.’ Here in a special excerpt (đoạn trích) from his book he looks at the world about hat making in Wray, dating back to the 1830s.

“Welcome to my tea party,” Spencer said. “They say it is a place full of wonder, danger and excitement. They say to survive (sống sót) there you have to be ‘mad as a hatter.’ Well, thankfully, I am.”

"First catch your hare" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Andy Brunner on Unsplash

"First catch your hare" = cứ bắt được thỏ đã -> nghĩa là phải đạt được cái gì trước hết rồi mới quyết định làm gì với nó; chưa đẻ chớ vội đặt tên.

Ví dụ
Good point! When asked for a recipe (công thức) for "jugged hare," Churchill replied "first, catch your hare." That said, this would be an interesting case for Parisa. The theft was violent (bạo lực) and from minimum wage earners - so let's hope for prosecution if the hare is caught.

IN 1747, an English woman published a cookbook in which a recipe for a hare dish began with the words, “First, catch your hare”. Likewise, in investigating (điều tra) the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 tragedy (thảm họa), Dutch prosecutors must first establish what radar guided the missile.

FIRST, catch your hare. Or peel it off the road, if you’re one of the pragmatic (thực dụng), prudent (cẩn trọng) few who see road kill as food. But be sure to wear a high-vis vest, check the animal’s eyes (you want clear, not milky) and avoid anything with maggots.

"Rotten to the core" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Alex Haney on Unsplash

"Rotten to the core" = thối từ lõi, rữa từ trong ra ngoài, nhà dột từ nóc -> nghĩa là chỉ tình trạng xấu, tệ.

Ví dụ
Plausible (hợp lý). But doesn't go far enough. He's not just an asshole. He's also a traitor (kẻ phản bội) and a criminal. He's not just ignorant (ngu dốt) or uncouth (thô lỗ). He's rotten to the core. He's a bad man hurting America because he thinks it benefits him to do so.

Because right now, Butler says, the political system only works for rich, white people. So he started a group called the Black Future Project, which pushes for racial justice and demands criminal justice (tư pháp hình sự) reforms like defunding the police. For Butler, that is just a small step towards dismantling (phá hủy) an entire system that is rotten at its core.

Nothing about the familiarity of this practice, however, makes any of it remotely legal. Like any number of commonplace (tầm thường) white collar crimes, the scheme is just another example of how the wealthy and powerful maintain a disproportionate (bất cân xứng) choke hold on the control of our government. The whole thing remains rotten to the core and needs to be treated as the kind of criminal behavior it is.

To Sally Christenson, when Obama left office unemployment was 4 percent. Under Trump it is between 10 percent and 14 percent. Do the math!! Concerning the virus, this administration knew about it back in December and our failed leader did nothing, but kept it under wrap (giữ kín). If he had mandated (ủy nhiệm) "masks" and "social distancing" we would not have the death toll. He's rotten to the core and doesn't care about the deaths. The deaths are mostly the elderly and people of color.

"Spoil (one) rotten" (tiếng lóng) nghĩa là mang lại thứ người đó mong muốn.

Ví dụ
Do u think she knows that this is her forever home and I’m gonna spoil her rotten and she’s gonna be a very happy lady.

To congratulate myself for getting through today which has been a day of days, I have decided I deserve to spoil myself rotten and order a ton of lululemon (hãng quần áo).

One thing about me is, Im gonna love you, spoil you rotten, kiss you all the damn time, be clingy, hold your hand in public, give you forehead kisses, lick your face, and cuddle you. and love you some more.

"You'd spoil our kids rotten," Shen Qingqiu says.
"They'll have you to set them right," Lbh says, eyes wide and bottom lip out in a pout (bĩu môi).
Sqq caves. "I'll think about it."

"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" nghĩa là gì?

"Something is rotten in (the state of) Denmark" nghĩa là có điều gì đó kỳ lạ hoặc đáng ngờ đang xảy ra, có mùi tham nhũng. "Rotten" là thối rữa, mục nát. Câu thoại xuất phát từ vở Hamlet của Shakespeare.

Ví dụ
“Something’s rotten in the State of Denmark” is one of the most famous opening lines in all of Shakespeare’s works. However, today’s Denmark is just proving the opposite: there is something remarkably proper in the Kingdom.

In Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” Act 1, Scene 4, Marcellus says, “something is rotten in the state of Denmark.” Yes, that’s true, but let’s talk about something else that’s rotten - it’s in Washington, D.C. I refer to the flaying of Michael Flynn - a 100% patriotic (yêu nước) American citizen.

Citing a quote from William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet, "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark", the Kerala High Court directed the state police chief to conduct an inquiry regarding the investigation (cuộc điều tra) and submission (trình báo) of the final report in the seizure (tịch thu) of counterfeit currency (tiền giả) worth Rs 75 lakh.

Emanuel called the deal "a whitewash (minh oan) of justice." He spoke again Wednesday on the issue making references to Hamlet. "Something is rotten in Denmark...It doesn't add up. As I said yesterday, nothing here adds up," he said. When asked if the city would sue Smollett to recoup (bù đắp) the costs spent on the case, the Mayor refused to answer.

"Soon ripe, soon rotten" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Timothy Grindall from Pexels

"Soon ripe, soon rotten" hoặc "early ripe, early rotten" = chín sớm thối sớm, sớm nở tối tàn -> nghĩa là nói đến tài năng hoặc trí thông minh của một người có từ sớm (trẻ thần đồng) có thể sẽ mai một dần theo năm tháng.

Ví dụ
Soon ripe, soon rotten. The shorter you have to develop a quality, the shorter time you have to use it. Take time to build the foundation (nền tảng)!

'Soon ripe, soon rotten'. Know where to apply your efforts. Certain qualities (phẩm chất) like aerobic qualities can decline quite quickly. Others, less so.

There are many resolutions for religion, produced by some sudden pangs (đau đớn) of conviction (kết tội), and taken up without due consideration, that prove abortive, and come to nothing: soon ripe, soon rotten.

With or without the Chinese retaliation (trả thù) the Dow was due to correct once tax cuts and budget understood. Dow today below start of Trump Presidency. Investor sentiment an indicator (chỉ số) of their trust in POTUS and instability of his leadership & cabinet. Early ripe, early rotten. SAD!

"Argue him down" nghĩa là gì?

Cãi bằng được mới thôi. Photo by AEPSP

"Argue him down" nghĩa là cãi lại được ai, chiến thắng cuộc tranh luận. "Argue something down" còn có nghĩa là thương lượng, giảm giá.

Ví dụ
There are folks that will argue me down that everything that went wrong was an issue with the Celtics, not him.

Asia, went up against him trying to argue him down. But they were no match for his wisdom and spirit when he spoke.

If you know me you’ve heard this story but I think often about my white professor saying ni**er twice in class and had the nerve to try to argue me down when I told him it made me uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, the natural thing is still to attempt to argue down our opponent (đối thủ). Someone has said that golf is difficult because the golf swing is unnatural. It goes against every natural impulse (thúc đẩy) of how to swing a club (vung gậy).

"Argue your way out of" nghĩa là gì?

"Argue one's way out (of something)" nghĩa là nói chuyện/tranh luận để giải quyết vấn đề.

Ví dụ
C'mon man! Once the cops show up, they ain't leaving until you're walking off that plane. You aren't gonna argue your way out of it. So grab your carry on and...buh-bye!

Hey can you stop going around saying he did nothing wrong? I say this as someone who still cares about Matthew but you're very obviously wrong. He has fucked up. It's a fact. Not something you can argue your way out of.

Christ lady, do you hear yourself? That bullshit argument you made is totally irrelevant (không liên quan). They’re 11yo girls literally twerking (đánh hông) while dressed like strippers (vũ nữ thoát y)! You can’t argue your way out of that one! TF is wrong with you?

"Hiton, you astound (làm kinh ngạc) me, you really do," Servinson said. “You actually believe you can argue your way out of this. Time is up for you. No one can say we did not give you a chance to confess. Now, we will do it my way and believe me when I tell you that there is no possible way you will be to resist."

"Blast to smithereens" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Alexander Schimmeck on Unsplash

"Blast to smithereens" có smithereens là mảnh vụn -> cụm từ này nghĩa là phá hủy hoặc nổ ra thành nhiều mảnh nhỏ.

Ví dụ
Thousands of people visit this area every year to hone (mài) their shooting skills in an outdoor setting. But some bring appliances, televisions, vehicles and paint cans — and other objects gathering dust in garages — to blast to smithereens and leave behind.

Study the pattern of those seeking refuge (tị nạn) within the UK and you will discover the nations our governments have chosen to bomb and blast to smithereens in the name of oil and better relations with our United States puppet-master.

This week we’ve got another Lego Creator expert vehicle for your growing car collection, the best Optimus Prime to ever appear on the big screen in figure form, a chilling Mr. Freeze, and some iconic plush (lộng lẫy) video game baddies you won’t instinctively feel the need to blast to smithereens.

"Can't argue with that" nghĩa là gì?

"Can't argue with that" nghĩa là không có gì để bàn cãi, phản đối điều đó.

Ví dụ
Yogurt is the best face mask u can’t argue with me on that.

Future generations will look upon us now, shake their heads, and think we were perhaps the dumbest people that ever lived in America. And I have to say I can’t argue with that.

Megan couldn‟t argue with that. Summer's chocolate-banana-blueberry muffins (bánh nướng xốp) were legendary. It was a combination that shouldn‟t have worked, but ended up blowing your mind instead.

“I can't argue with that, but I'm not taking this lightly. I'll be vigilant (thận trọng),” she said solemnly (nghiêm túc). “I won't take anything for granted, I promise—Van.” She touched his arm gently. “I have every confidence that I can do this."
