"Dead-tree press" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Roman Kraft on Unsplash

"Dead-tree press" = báo trên cây chết (giấy) -> nghĩa là tờ báo, báo in nói chung.

Ví dụ
Despite the huge interest and high viewing figures being reported across media platforms (nền tảng) from a public hungry for information and guidance, trust in the TV news channels and conventional journalism has hit a new low. With the dead-tree press also suffering a big drop in sales, as people were forced to change the way they got their news due to constraints (bắt ép, ép buộc) placed on them during the lockdown.

But might a worldwide – and potentially (có khả năng) universal – press conference that reveals that Superman is just a man of the people, working as a mid-level journalist for the dead tree press in New York?

Despite these concerns, the fact that someone as power-hungry as Osborne is moving into journalism is at least a great a vote of confidence in the ongoing influence (tầm ảnh hưởng) of the dead-tree press.

Meanwhile, as reported in the dead-tree press last week (that’s newspaper to you), Cabinet has approved same-day marriage licences, particularly for people on board ships in territorial (lãnh thổ) waters. This will probably work for land visitors, although I would think it wise (sáng suốt) to inform the authorities (the registrar general) beforehand.

"Press the flesh" nghĩa là gì?

"Press the flesh" có press là nắm, bóp, flesh là thịt -> cụm từ này nghĩa là gặp mặt, nói chuyện, bắt tay với mọi người.

Ví dụ
But the MD Anderson Cancer Center doctor has one word to describe (miêu tả) any of the 2020 candidates who might be tempted (có ý định) to press the flesh amid (giữa) the coronavirus outbreak: "dangerous."

He'd come and stay at the Hayes Mansion (biệt thự) next door to the Hayes House now, and he'd stay the whole week and obviously (rõ ràng) loved meeting the people and was a politician who loved to go out and press the flesh as they say.

Local papers (báo chí) have captured the disappointment among area residents, from northern California to southeastern Pennsylvania, but the disruption of a political norm also steals another opportunity for sitting and aspiring (khao khát) lawmakers to “press the flesh” with voters.

"Press his luck" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by: Dustin Humes on Unsplash

"Press (one's) luck" = nắm chặt/thúc ép vận may -> nghĩa là đánh liều với vận may đã có với hy vọng thành công hơn, nhưng có nguy cơ mất tất cả những gì đã đạt được từ trước tới nay.

Ví dụ
Transitioning an occluded (mắc kẹt) front, it may be Le Cléac’h was prepared to press his luck, but more likely he saw less cloud coming toward him and so was confident the front had evaporated (bốc hơi) and was therefore confident in his break away from the peloton.

Those legal (pháp lý) troubles led Vegas Dave to press his luck in the lucrative (có lợi) world of memorabilia (việc đáng nhớ). “When they banned (cấm) me,” Oancea says, “my vision was clear: sports cards.”

He didn’t want to press his luck, to put his face to the rehab grindstone for another year or two or 10, just to come out the other end with a body that doesn’t work and a nagging (rầy la) loathing (ghê tởm) of the thing he devoted the first part of his life to.

"On the dot" nghĩa là gì?

"On the dot" có "dot" là điểm hoặc chấm trên đồng hồ = ngay đúng giờ điểm -> cụm từ này nghĩa là rất đúng giờ hoặc ở một thời điểm cụ thể.

Ví dụ
When figuring out whether or not you should leave work at 5pm on the dot, consider your workplace culture and how other employees go about it.

During our conversation, Galanis was exceedingly (cực kỳ) cordial (chân thành) and forthcoming (sẵn sàng giúp đỡ), but, at the half-hour mark, on the dot, he brought the call to an abrupt end. “I’ve got a hard stop, this was great, though—thank you,” he said suddenly, with no preamble (lời mở đầu), and hung up. A switch from hot to cold is par for the course (điển hình; thông thường) in interviews, which are necessarily transactional.

It seems like you not only need be on the dot, but also have refresh your page a few times to get one in your cart, and be mighty quick about typing in your payment info because you can still lose the preorder as you check out. Also, the Best Buy cart doesn’t seem to allow us to even begin check-out — a couple of Verge editors gave up after an hour, and one of us came back to find out it had been removed from our cart.

"Hit the town" có "hit" là đi đến một địa điểm đặc biệt = đi lên phố -> cụm từ này nghĩa là đi chơi, đi dạo hoặc mua sắm.

Ví dụ
We hit the town hard last night. We had a lot of fun but today I’m exhausted!

Hundreds of revellers (người thích ăn chơi, rượu chè) hit the town in Newcastle and Leeds for one last night on the tiles (ăn chơi trác táng; xả láng) as the North faces tough coronavirus restrictions.

The middle part of the film snaps the audience back to the present, crucially (chủ yếu) revealing that “Eden” is a popular lecturer and writer named Veronica, who has a gorgeously appointed home and a loving family. She’s great at yoga, a skilled horse-jumper, and loves to hit the town with her two best pals (Lily Cowles and Gabourey Sidibe). After the harrowing (đau lòng) opening, this second act feels both excessively drawn out (kéo dài) and curiously frivolous (ngớ ngẩn), as though Antebellum is merely killing time until, one night, Veronica is kidnapped and wakes up in the “past.”

tinh trùng cổ nhất thế giới, 100 triệu năm, tìm thấy ở Myanmar...
-----
A team of paleontologists (nhà cổ sinh vật học) has discovered (phát hiện, khám phá) what they believe is the world's oldest animal sperm (tinh trùng động vật), frozen inside a tiny crustacean (loài giáp xác) in a blob (giọt nước, viên tròn) of tree resin in Myanmar 100 million years ago.

The oldest known examples of fossilised animal sperm were previously a mere 17 million years old.

The sperm were found inside an ostracod, a kind of crustacean that has existed for 500 million years and can be found in many oceans today.

They were found in the body of a female specimen, indicating that she must have been fertilised (đưa phấn hoa hoặc tinh trùng vào (cây, trứng hoặc con vật cái) để nó phát triển hạt thành con; thụ tinh; thụ phấn) shortly before being trapped in the tree resin.

14% đàn ông cảm thấy hứng tình vì alexa của amazon

A new study commissioned by WeVibe, a sex toy company (công ty đồ chơi tình dục), found loneliness (cô đơn) and anxiety (lo âu) during the virus-induced lockdowns (phong tỏa) has likely resulted in the emergence of "technosexuals."

Readers must be confused about what exactly the term means. Well, it turns out that anyone who is sexually attracted to machinery, robots, and or, in this case, smart-speakers, is a technosexual.

Also known as "Alexa," Amazon's smart-speaker is no longer just fulfilling questions about the daily weather or telling lame jokes, but rather the Chinese-made device is fueling men's sexual fantasies.

Thirty bare-chested (ngực trần) women locked themselves to the railings (rào chắn) outside Britain’s Houses of Parliament on Thursday in an Extinction Rebellion protest to demand action against climate change.

The women carried a large banner reading “Can’t bare the truth?” and had words painted on their chests representing predicted consequences (hậu quả dự đoán được) of global warming (sự ấm lên toàn cầu) such as war (chiến tranh), drought (hạn hán), starvation (sự chết đói), wildfires (cháy rừng), violence (bạo lực) and famine (nạn đói).
