"Seo phì" ít thôi!

mải chụp ảnh không nhớ/biết gì đến trải nghiệm đâu...

nếu bà chụp ảnh cháu suốt ngày, dặn bà lần sau đến chơi bỏ điện thoại ở nhà, dành thời gian chơi với cháu... :D
Dear Dan,

Whenever my mother visits us, she’s preoccupied with taking photos of her grandchildren (cháu) so that she can remember every moment. Having her camera in our faces all the time is annoying, but I don’t want to deprive her of good memories when the visit ends. Should I try to convince her to stop taking pictures?

Now that most of us carry a phone with a camera all the time, it’s hard to resist the temptation (ham muốn) to document every significant moment in photographs. But it turns out that taking pictures all the time isn’t just annoying; it can make it more difficult to remember the very experiences the photos are intended to capture.

In one experiment, pairs of visitors took a tour of a historic landmark (mốc lịch sử). One person in each pair was instructed to take photos and the other was told not to. A few weeks later they were given a surprise memory test about the landmark, and it turned out that the visitors who took photos remembered much less than those who didn’t. While the photographers were preoccupied with trying to get the best shot, the nonphotographers were able to think about the experience and absorb it into the structure of their memories.

With this in mind, try asking your mother to experiment with leaving her camera at home next time she visits. She might find that this allows her to spend more time really interacting with the grandchildren, leaving her with memories that are more vivid and meaningful than any photos.

Dear Dan,

After a long holiday vacation, I thought I would return to work re-energized. But after just a few days back I’m already feeling burned out again. What can I do?

You might think that the more time you spend away from the office, the more refreshed you’ll feel when you return. But research shows that the length of a vacation plays only a small part in how you feel when you go back to work. What matters most are the conditions you’re coming back to. If you feel unappreciated (không được đánh giá cao) or powerless (không có quyền hành, bất lực), or that your work environment is unfair (không công bằng), frustration (mệt mỏi) and unhappiness (buồn bực, chán nản) can come back very quickly. If you want to fight burnout, don’t take more time away from work. Think instead about ways to address these underlying issues.

Dear Dan,

My fiancé (hôn phu, chồng chưa cưới) is an excellent (tuyệt vời) cook (nấu ăn), and every meal (bữa ăn) he makes for us is delicious (ngon miệng). I’m always giving him compliments (lời khen), but I worry that over time they will be less meaningful (ít ý nghĩa) because he’ll get used to them. How can I continue to praise his cooking in a way that shows I mean it?

I wouldn’t worry too much about your fiancé getting used to your compliments. Research shows that receiving compliments is very motivating and that people who give them usually underestimate their impact on the recipient. One study that looked specifically at frequent compliments found they didn’t lose their effectiveness as long as they weren’t identical each time. So keep the compliments coming, but make sure to switch them up from time to time.

Stephens told investigators she “had a dream that her husband was messing around,” police say, so she went into the kitchen, grabbed a knife and attacked him while he was still in bed.

The victim was hospitalized (nhập viện) after suffering four to seven stab  (vết dao đâm) wounds,

"Grinding poverty" nghĩa là gì?

"Grinding poverty" có grind là công việc cực nhọc đều đều -> từ này nghĩa là cảnh nghèo nàn thê thảm, nghèo cùng cực.

Ví dụ
Millions of small farmers (nông dân nhỏ) in Ivory Coast and Ghana, which together grow 60 percent of the world's cocoa, live in grinding poverty.

“In the old days, two maids (người hầu) and a gardener (người làm vườn) were employed to tend the vicarage (hoa lợi của linh mục). I am not prepared to go on seeing my wife trying to do the work of mistress of the house, mother and two maids, and, as a reward, suffer the privations (cảnh thiếu thốn) of grinding poverty.”

The underappreciation for business success can lead to support for policies, such as high taxes and excessive regulation, which can undermine the competitive market process. This is of deep concern because the competitive market process is responsible for driving entrepreneurial risk and investment into the innovations that have not only pulled humans out of grinding poverty, but have collectively raised our standard of living by over 3,000 percent, with most of the gains going to the poorest.

"Live in genteel poverty" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Sean Benesh on Unsplash.

"Live in genteel poverty" có genteel là quý phái, thượng lưu, trưởng giả -> cụm từ này nghĩa là nghèo mà vẫn phong lưu (cố duy trì lối sống của giới thượng lưu, dù không đủ điều kiện để làm (như) vậy).

Ví dụ
A lively, well-travelled niece texted me last week that she and her mother were out walking round Hindustan Park—a stone’s throw from our house (cách nhà vài bước chân) — taking in all the trendy boutiques and bijou cafes and eateries that have sprung up in that once-somnolent (ngủ gà ngủ gật; ngủ lơ mơ), bhadralok residential area. It has clearly become Calcutta’s Camden Town or Greenwich Village. It seems commerce is no longer vulgar (khiếm nhã hoặc tục tĩu; thô tục; thô bỉ), and genteel poverty is no longer the acceptable ideal.

The first I knew of my new genteel state was the change in grocery shopping. Not only was the weekly filled-to-the-brim basket a distant memory, my choice of shops and what I bought also altered fundamentally. Once, at the start of my slide into genteel poverty, I arrived at a till (quầy tính tiền) with insufficient cash (không đủ tiền) to pay for my food. I had to leave the trolley, grunting 'I'll be back' in a poor Arnie imitation. I was, once I recovered my rainy-day notes hidden down the back of the sofa, but not without embarrassing my teenage daughter to the point of mortification.

The movie sort-of creates an alternative-reality “origin myth” for Peter Pan and Alice Liddell, imagining them as siblings, stricken with grief when a third sibling dies. And yet, bafflingly, the plot as it pans out doesn’t mesh with the well-established fictional stories of Peter and Alice, and neither with the real-world situations of how the authors came to create their legendary characters. David Oyelowo and Angelina Jolie play Jack and Rose, a Victorian married couple with three children who are supposed to live in shabby genteel poverty in the countryside, subsisting on Jack’s quaint woodworking skills (they have what appears to be a spectacular Elizabethan manor house). Mean Aunt Eleanor (Anna Chancellor) is always telling the little girl to be a lady.

"Bit of fluff" nghĩa là gì?

"Bit of fluff" = một chút lông tơ -> nghĩa là người phụ nữ hấp dẫn, quyến rũ.

Ví dụ
Anna knew she was the envy of all of her friends as she paraded around town with her new bit of fluff.

I think she means Sarkozy who has just had a messy divorce needed a wife on his arm, rather than a bit of fluff.

Recently, she continued to draw attention when she released a set of modern Christmas celebration photos. In the series of photos, the singer appears with her bit of fluff. Seductive looks, showing off her toned figure in sexy, shoulder-length outfits. The 1972 female singer also made fans excited by posing like a model.

"Little black book" nghĩa là gì?

"Little black book" = cuốn sách đen nho nhỏ -> nghĩa là danh sách những mối liên hệ đáng tin cậy, có giá trị, nhất là người yêu, crush.

Ví dụ
Fast forward (tua nhanh) 20+ years and a new generation is getting introduced to Miss Bradshaw and her dating woes (phiền muộn), thanks to film sequels and syndication. With recent rumors about a potential revival for HBO Max now is the perfect opportunity to open up her little black book and revisit some of Carrie's most memorable former flames.

‘It is dedicated to our experiences of things we hold most important in our lives,’ says Spenny. ‘It is a reflection (phản ánh lại) of us.’ They have rifled through their little black book of contacts and brought in experts in their fields, from massage to meditation (suy ngẫm). ‘All the people we have brought in are our dear friends,’ says Tracy.

I find it hard to believe that there’s nobody in Michael Edward’s little black book that could do the job, it’s just about if the money is right. If we want to retain (giữ lại) the title, then FSG might have to eat an unexpected outlay.

"The red mist descends" nghĩa là gì?

giận rồi đấy... Photo by Christopher Campbell on Unsplash.

"The red mist descends" -> nghĩa là trở nên rất nóng nảy, tức giận; cả giận mất khôn.

Ví dụ
Drunken (say sỉn) 'joker' snaps and knocks man unconscious (bất tỉnh) after busy pub karaoke session. Violence erupts at a pub after the red mist descends and a customer stamps on another man and leaves him unconscious.

The two sides clash (xung đột) over the right time to attack Ginny. Morgan wants to hold off until his people are safe and a new home has been prepared, while Sherry's group plan to strike immediately. Desperate not to lose Sherry again, Dwight betrays his friends and sides with his ex-wife, but his eagerness (say mê) consumes him. As the red mist descends, Dwight brutally tortures (tra tấn) a prisoner, locks up Morgan and Al, and forsakes the innocent members of Ginny's community who might get caught in the crossfire.

The Parisian team narrowly (suýt) beat Toulon in a 24-23 match. It highlights just how competitive the competition is this season with the galactico team sat at 7th in the table despite their star-studded team. Here is the clip revealing just how destructive Eben Etzebeth is as a player when the red mist descends!

We've become a nation of angry birds, with one in four of us falling into the temper (tính khí) trap. Mike Fisher, founder of the British Association of Anger Management, tells us how to keep your cool when the red mist descends.

"Red as a beetroot" nghĩa là gì?

"Red as a beetroot" = đỏ như củ cải đường -> nghĩa là đỏ mặt vì xấu hổ.

Ví dụ
'I turned round and there were about 20 people clapping (vỗ tay) and singing my old terrace song,' he said quietly. 'Did I blush? Deary me. Red as a beetroot. It's embarrassing. 'I'm a simple person, a quiet person, and things like that… they watched me go to the toilet, then came back and clapped me.

I will address the last few lines directly to my father because he will be extremely embarrassed (xấu hổ) (and turn red as a beetroot) if I ever say it to his face: “Thank you Baba, for being what you are; and for just letting me be what I am. Thank you very much.”

Naomi said: "She's doing really well but I am not a runner by any means. We listen to music as we go along. I'm as a red as a beetroot and Willow sometimes half dances, half runs as she goes along. We're getting faster and knocking time off our run each day.

"I then pick up my stuff & move to another table in the carriage (xe khách) with my daughter...a white guy sits down where we were sat...Not. A. Peep." "My daughter looks over at the lady and says "Are you not going to ask him for his credentials (phẩm chất) then?" The lady turned as red as a beetroot.

"Wear more than one hat" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Kaylyn Mok on Unsplash

"Wear more than one hat" = đội nhiều mũ -> nghĩa là nắm giữ nhiều vị trí, thực hiện nhiều vai trò.

Ví dụ
Sometimes members switch positions—what we in the U.S. call the revolving door. Or they may wear more than one hat, serving strategic government functions while also running (điều hành) businesses.

We are looking for a highly organized professional to guide corporate interiors, mixed-use development, and single-family residential projects in the tri-state area. As members of a small firm, we each wear more than one hat and you will, too.

Starting and running a business can feel like a whirlwind (cơn lốc) at times. Quite often you’ll need to wear more than one hat, making decisions on everything from operations and HR to marketing. It can be easy to make start-up mistakes when you’re operating at 100mph, so we’ve put a list together of the typical problems faced by start-ups and how to avoid them.

"Will o' the wisp" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by insung yoon on Unsplash

"Will o' the wisp" -> nghĩa là không thể đạt được mục tiêu. 'Will o' the wisp' (=ignis fatuus) là hiện tượng khí đầm lầy khiến ánh sáng đột ngột xuất hiện và biến mất trên mặt đất đầm lầy. Cố gắng bắt được ý chí là điều không thể, giống như cố bắt tia chớp vào chai.

Ví dụ
As we've seen time and time again, attempting to change or repeal the amendment (tu chính án) will forever be a will-o'-the-wisp.

The North Korean leader confirmed that the five-year economic plan set out in the 2016 session did not like a will o' the wisp in most areas at the opening meeting of the 8th Korean Labor Party Congress.

I wrote the poem because Christmas, a celebration I love, passed like a will o' the wisp, a song and dance show played out on an old black and white TV. All its good will and cheery promise slipped by like a distant parade—lights, color, carols viewed from afar.

"Avenue of escape" nghĩa là gì?

"Avenue of escape" -> nghĩa là lối thoát.

Ví dụ
In a year when TV may never have been so important a lifeline, as a portal of information or an avenue of escape during months of sheltering in place to survive a pandemic.

Many claim that mantras (câu thần chú cầu thần) or sacred utterances send a sloth bear (gấu lười) scampering away in fear, but it is more the vociferous (om sòm), aggressive utterances, the bold front and the sound of the hated human voice that puts it to flight, given an avenue of escape. If not, there is no escape.

As Conor dives into his drawings to cope (đương đầu), he finds another unexpected avenue of escape from the harshness of his reality when he's visited by the tree-like Monster (Liam Neeson), who introduces him to three fantastical stories that ultimately intertwine with his own real-life narrative in some heartbreaking ways.

"A rift in the lute" nghĩa là gì?

Photo by Kenny Luo on Unsplash

"A rift in the lute" = vết nứt của đàn luýt -> nghĩa là vấn đề hay khiếm khuyết dù nhỏ cũng làm hỏng tổng thể; nghĩa bóng là mối rạn nứt trong tình bạn, tình yêu.

Ví dụ
The arrival of the mother in-law in the family proved a rift in the lute.

I hope this bit of rust isn't a rift in the lute and doesn't end up damaging the whole paint job.

The country may favor this economy, as was claimed, or it may not. But no matter where it stands, there seems to be a rift in the lute of the administration's peace.

Cinderella has married her Prince Charming and has settled down to the aforesaid happiness. But there is a rift in the lute — and it is Buttons. Willing fellow that he is, he’s always worshipped Cinderella and at one time even hoped that she might be his but of course you know all that! Now, he has become something of an embarrassment, for he knew her long before she made the big time and is more than willing to talk about it. Obviously, he’ll have to go!

Bear the bell of style with Ivanka's top by Staud.

After a regular season in which he became the first Bills player to bear the bell the NFL in both catches (127) and yards (1,535) – setting single-season franchise records in both categories – the trade for Diggs is already looking like one of the best in team history.

“Poop your pants” nghĩa là gì?

“Poop (one's) pants” = són ra quần -> nghĩa là rất bất ngờ.

Ví dụ
It remains to be seen how far Katie makes it on The Bachelor. Do you think she will tell Matt James the funny story about the time she pooped her pants at work?

Appearing on The Greg Hill Show Thursday morning, OMF host Christian Fauria shared a rather disturbing (làm lo âu) story about one former teammate who did in fact poop his pants during an NFL game.

The judge continued: "Ru doesn't like to do anything run-of-the-mill. When I got to work and I found out they were doing this, I said, 'Are you kidding me? These girls are going to poop their pants'. "You're nervous to begin with, being out there in front of us! It evens the playing field. You'll be able to tell straight away, 'Oh, she's a look queen, she won't be able to perform but she likes to pose'. It's fun as a judge to watch that because you can see and get it."

"Nugget of information" nghĩa là gì?

"Nugget of information" = quặng vàng thông tin -> nghĩa là tư liệu quý giá, hữu ích; nghĩa khác (châm biếm) là ngụ ý lời nói tầm thường, vô ích, chẳng có giá trị thông tin gì.

Ví dụ
A little nugget of information to help us start this new year on the path to health and wellness involves increasing our ability to reach out for support.

I also tell people the more I learn about Packers history the less I know because every nugget of information uncovered only leads to more questions. Sometimes my brain also plays tricks on me as it did last week on my packers.

There is never a “one-size-fits-all” plan as any producer knows. The key is to take advantage of learning opportunities to see if there is a nugget of information that can lead a farmer and rancher (người chủ trại nuôi súc vật) to ask, “Is there a way for me to integrate (hòa nhập) this concept into my operation?” The key is also to ask what it takes to measure success and other variables.

kem dùng cho trẻ em khiến "trẻ đầu to"...
Government officials ordered a baby cream (kem) to be pulled off shelves  (thu hồi, rút khỏi quầy kệ) and its manufacturer (nhà sản xuất) to suspend production (dừng sản xuất) due to allegedly (bị cáo buộc) containing an excessive amount (lượng quá mức) of hormones, leading to abnormal (dị thường) infant development (phát triển ở trẻ).

A science blogger Daddy Wei (老爸评测-魏老爸) released a video on Weibo yesterday alleging a 5-month-old baby gained weight rapidly (tăng cân nhanh chóng), grew excessive hair on his face and exhibited delays in movement development after using the cream for only two months.

Daddy Wei claimed he took the cream and another skincare product made by the same company called “Happy Forest” for testing, and more than 30 milligrams per kilogram of clobetasol propionate, a strong steroid, was discovered in both products.

Clobetasol propionate is used to treat moderate-to-severe eczema and other skin conditions. Due to its potency, treatment should not exceed two weeks and it's not recommended in children under the age of 12, according to, a popular online source of drug information.

"Group think bias" nghĩa là gì?

nên tiếp cận nhiều nguồn tin... Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash.

'Group think bias' = định kiến tư duy theo nhóm -> nghĩa là hồ hởi với ý tưởng của số đông và có khuynh hướng không quan tâm đến những quan điểm hay ý tưởng khác với nhóm của mình.

Ví dụ
"One effect of the contraction of the news industry is that journalists (nhà báo) are networking with fewer peers and sources (nguồn tin). In one recently published study, "Sharing Knowledge and 'Microbubbles': Epistemic Communities and Insularity in US Political Journalism," researchers from the University of Illinois explore the extent to which groupthink bias is increasingly being built into the content (nội dung) we consume."

Investors who make investment decisions on the basis that ‘everyone else is doing it’ are succumbing to what is known as ‘herd bias’ (bầy đàn), choosing to believe that ‘everybody can’t be wrong’. This groupthink bias operates on the basis of safety in number where investors take comfort in the fact that everyone is jumping on the same bandwagon. Investing in a share because everyone else is doing the same is fundamentally flawed decision-making, primarily because the decision is not based on research but on the actions of the collective.

Our critics claim we want to turn over nuclear decision making to artificial intelligence devices such as Amazon Echo. While this may be humorous, it is detrimental to actually addressing the challenge the United States faces. We freely acknowledge the current limitations of artificial intelligence technologies, but we do not agree that these same limitations will necessarily exist one, five, or ten years hence. For skeptics of AI, there is an expectation that it must be perfect 100 percent of the time if it is to replace people. Yet humans are not held to the same standard. They are deeply flawed and prone to mistakes from stress, group think, bias, and other cognitive challenges. We have avoided nuclear miscalculations and mistakes not by ensuring individual perfection but by taking a layered approach to security. The same would be required with any AI.

"Stroke (one's) ego" = vuốt ve cái tôi -> nghĩa là xu nịnh hay ca ngợi ai.

Ví dụ
Decades ago, I would be bothered by one in one hundred evaluations that was less than excellent. Now, I ask for feedback that won’t stroke my ego, rather, will help me create a better experience for the next audience.

Lando is about the same way but unlike Din he kind of needs company to keep himself occupied, and to have someone else around to stroke his ego from time to time, or at least give him a bit of a challenge from an intellectual standpoint.

I am a failed businessman, millions of dollars in debt. I have no idea what I’m doing and rely on a team of people around me to stroke my ego just so I can function. I don’t care how many Americans die of COVID as long as I get elected… That would really turn this election on its head.

The floor seems slippery, judging by the squeaking (tiếng cót két) noises produced when people get off in front of Trees. This may become a problem for me later. Thankfully, the EMTs arrived to the crash in time to snatch the woman and her child out of the jaws of death.

Suddenly attacked by a green snake, grabbed on to the head, the lizard found all the ways to struggle to snatch out of the jaws of death.

Donald Trump and Joe Biden are not only the two oldest candidates racing for the US President's seat. They jaw at us, too. Although their styles are different - Mr. Trump likes to say short sentences while Mr. Biden likes to be cumbersome, Mr. Trump likes to express his own opinions while Mr. Biden often tells stories, both very fond of talking. . However, in the last debate, it was strange that both sides seem to want to give the opponent more time to speak.
